Saudi Arabia ousts ministers, arrests princes and former officials in anti-corruption sting

Saudi Arabia's King Salman has removed a prominent prince who headed the National Guard, replaced the economy minister and announced the creation of a new anti-corruption committee.

The Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news channel also reported late Saturday that dozens of princes and former ministers were detained in a new anti-corruption probe headed by the kingdom's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed Salman. No further details were immediately given.

The king ousted one of the country's highest-level royals from power, relieving Prince Miteb bin Abdullah of his post as head of the National Guard. Prince Miteb was once considered a contender for the throne.

The monarch also replaced Minister of Economy and Planning Adel Fakeih with his deputy, Mohammad al-Tuwaijri.

11 princes and four sitting ministers arrested.

It's basically a coup by the failson MBS pandering to Trump and Netanyahu

This will be the beginning of the end for the House of Saud

It's interesting times indeed but Im not sure why the Zionists would want the Al-Saud dynasty to collapse?

That has been predicted ever since i was knee high to a grass hopper. As corrupt and and as bad as they are, if it does happen, the ME would be in the sort of chaos that makes the present troubles look like a picnic.

Saudi Arabia arrested prominent billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal as part of an anti-corruption purge, Al-Eqtisadiah reported.

Alwaleed is among 11 princes and 38 current or former senior officials that were arrested as part of a corruption probe, the Saudi financial daily reported in an infographic on its Twitter feed on Sunday. A senior Saudi official confirmed that the list is accurate.

Alwaleed is one of the world’s richest men and has an extensive portfolio that includes a stake in Citigroup Inc. which the prince has held since 1991. Kingdom Holding, in which Alwaleed owns 95 percent, is also an investor in News Corp., Twitter Inc., JD.com Inc., the Four Seasons hotel chain and Accor Hotels.

Acting on orders from a newly established anti-corruption committee, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi police arrested 11 princes, four ministers and dozens of former ministers, Al Arabiya television said on Saturday. Other changes announced separately on Saturday included the replacement of the economy minister and a new head for the powerful National Guard.

This is like Game of Thrones. First they got rid of poor Muhammad bin Nayef and now this. Fascinating to follow from afar.

They're so rich yet so medieval in their everyday dealings.

Good steps for solidifying his power, MBS will decide the Saudi Future in the coming decades, so it is good that he will have supreme power which no other king has enjoyed. No tribes or family members to cajole now and everyone will get on the program pronto.

Hmm...

^^^ Confirmed.

Saudi Prince Mansour bin Muqrin dies in helicopter crash

Saudi sources said on Sunday that Prince Mansur bin Muqrin, deputy governor of Asir, died in a helicopter crash, carrying a number of officials in the Asir region.

https://english.alarabiya.net/en/Ne...sour-bin-Muqrin-dies-in-helicopter-crash.html

RIP.

He was son of Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz same person who showed the agreement of Nawaz and Musharraf back in 2007 when NS was denying any agreement.

And just like that MBS has wiped out all future chances of a coup. The National Guard is Saudis internal force that has always been run by the family of the late King Abdullah and Prince Miteb at one time was seen as a future king by many. The national guard was probably the only force in Saudi that wasn't under MBS and now it is.

The arrests of Alwaleed, Bakr Bin Laden, Saleh Kamal, and Waleed Ibrahim (owner of MBC Media) is probably to wipe out any force that could finance a coup in the future and influence society. Bakr Bin Laden was known as the true ruler of Jeddah and it's said no royal had any pull without Bakr's blessings.

Interesting times these. I wonder if any evidence of "corruption" will ever come out or these guys will rot in jail until MBS says so.

Civil war is coming.
Sure, he now has control of all 3 of the security agencies, National Guard, the Armed Forces and internal security. Previously these 3 securty agencies were deliberately kept under the command of different Princes from different branches of the House of Saud, so as to act as counterbalaces. Not anymore.

However, there are literally hundreds of Princes/1st cousins alone of MBS, meaning hundreds of different branches/families, many of them financially wealthy and poweful in their own rights, and he can't arrest them all.

And last but not least, he's alienated the powerful clergy.

This is the beginning of an even more brutal dictatorship than existed before. At least previously there was a range of views at the top of the ruling family, resulting in compromises of decisions taken. Not any more. A 32 year old MSB, with the help of his friends, including the likes of Jared Kushner, close family friend of Netanyahu and Trump son-in-law, is now running the whole show.

A very accurate summary of the situation. You just missed one thing though (maybe intentionally), and that is naming his best ally who is motivating and cheering him on. Hint: that is the only leader to publicly support the arrests....

the media also is portraying that ordinary Saudis are rejoicing and cheering him on. Saudis I am seeing online are ecstatic, or maybe they are just bots?

I referred to him indirectly...via his son in law who advises him re- the Middle East.

You mean the ones who are most active on social media (a bit like going to a Real Madrid home match and thinking that all Spaniards support RM), and who think he's going to open up SA into a Western type society, or freeflowing like Dubai at least? They'll be the first ones he'll start shutting down, since the most vocal are usually the first ones to start complaining openly once he starts clamping down to suppress any unrest. That's why he's taken control of all 3 of the security services.

A Game Of Thrones

No not him :)

I meant a country much much closer to them than the US....

And the US has not made an official statement of support, unlike the other country ....

Damn, Cercei is on a killing spree.

This made me :))

It sounds like GOT, I can't believe they can get away with it in this century. If a useless third-world country did it the West would be on it defending 'democracy'.

It's interesting times indeed but Im not sure why the Zionists would want the Al-Saud dynasty to collapse?

I think s28 means that MBS playing to Nethanyahu's tunes will end up with in-fighting and ultimately the end of the Al-Saud dominance!

I believe the Israel - Saudi nexus is forming against Iran. The lifting of sanctions have played a major part in this, Iran is undergoing a rapid economic transformation, this is a very independent and frugal country designed by years of economic exile. Now with its economy opened up, wealth of resources, shrewd political alliances and ultimately a functioning and capable defence force, its a major threat in Israels and Saudis eyes. Al Sauds especially is struggling with its excesses and inbred inefficiencies and an absolutely in-competent defence force!

Both of them know America will not get dragged into a war again, so they rely a lot on each other. The wildcard in this whole equation will be Putin!

In the meanwhile expect the Tories to cry foul over Iran and feel sorry for the Saudis, the Israelis have made sure of that!

A superb summation of recent events by David Hearst.

It appears Prince Waleed bin Talal refused to invest in Neom, the mega city bin Salman announced would be built, hence why bin Salman removed him. bin Talal had also called publicly for bin Nayef’s release from house arrest.

bin Salman also was behind the resignation of Lebanon's PM Hariri who flew out to Riyadh not intending to resign nor even expecting to be forced to resign.

Don't care what goes on in arguably the worst country on the face of the planet.

That's Waleed bin Talal - the guy who Mohammad bin Salman has had arrested. bin Salman is Trump and Kushner's boy.

I doubt MBS would purge Alwaleed for not investing. They already have $100 billion committed to the project by SoftBank and Alwaleed has always stayed out of government/royal family run projects.

Speaking out on Bin Naif can be a legitimate reason but it doesn't explain why other billionaires like Bin Laden, and Kamal have been arrested. Maybe there is enough evidence of corruption...but who knows.

A second prince has died, apparently while "resisting arrest".
He is the youngest son of King Fahd

So confusing too many people involved but seems like GOT...

Anyways hardly matters to us what happens in Saudi..

Don't care what goes on in arguably the worst country on the face of the planet.

To call a country with 2 most holy sites in Islam is worst country in the world is very disrespectful.

Second Saudi prince Abdul Aziz confirmed dead

Hours after the death of Mansour Bin Muqrin, son of former crown prince Muqrin al-Saud, Twitter is abuzz with the reports of death of yet another Saudi prince.

The ArabicAlIthad News later quoted a Saudi Royal Court release saying that the Saudi royal family mourned the death of the prince who died at 44. It however did not cite a reason for the death.

Prince Aziz (44) was the youngest son of King Fahd and was reportedly arrested on Sunday.

The rumours of death began doing the rounds after few verified accounts broke the news.

Meanwhile, other reports said that Aziz was killed in a gunfight while allegedly resisting arrest.

A report on TheDuran website however did not mention a gunfight but only said 'died during an attempted arrest'.

PRINCE MANSOUR BIN MUQRIN'S DEATH

A Saudi prince has died in a helicopter crash near the border of Yemen on Sunday afternoon.

Prince Mansour Bin Muqrin, a member of the House of Saud and son of former crown prince Prince Muqrin al-Saud, was the appointed Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

Mansour Bin Muqrin was also the governor of Asir, a southern province in Saudi Arabia. Muqrin was traveling with several other government officials who were also killed in the crash, state TV Ekhbariya reported.

The helicopter crash came after Saudi Arabia arrested nearly a dozen princes, and several other former and current officials in a crackdown by the government's new anti-corruption committee on Saturday night.

Among those arrested is Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the richest people on the planet and a major investor in marquee brands of the world.

And so it starts, with two senior Princes/1st cousins of MBS already dead, one supposedly as a result of 'resisting arrest'.

Doubt God will mind in fact he’ll probably approve.

Apparently Prince Mansour Bin Muqrin, son of former crown prince Muqrin al-Saud, was trying to flee the country when his helicopter 'crashed' and he was killed. Shot down maybe?

And now Prince Aziz, son of King Fahd, dead whilst resisting arrest?

I wouldn't be surprised if MBS's father, the current King Salman, suddenly has a 'fatal' health issue, and thus MSB becoming King.

The Saudi's attacking Yemen, the cutting off of ties with Qatar and trying to bring the Qataris in line, the resignation of Lebanon's Prime Minister Hariri, the increased rhetoric against Hezbollah and Iran .... it's all the work of MSB, or rather Netanyahu via Trump and Jared Kushner,

Don't be surprised if the USA (Trump / Kushner), Israel (Netanyahu) and Saudi Arabia (MSB) jointly decide to attack Iran by concocting some excuse.

The family of Ahle Saud is worst thing that has happened to Arabia & holy land.
You can despise and hate them but to say as a country it is worst is a problem if you are a Muslim.

Clean the system? More likely to make the Iraq war and the current situation in Syria seem like child's play compared with the havoc to come unless he's removed quickly.

Him and his buddies (Netanyahu, Trump and Jared Kushner) are intent on attacking Iran, whilst at home he's set the ball rolling for the complete implosion of the House of Saud (which consists of literally thousands of Princes considering that ibn Saud had 36 sons that reached adulthood, meaning MBS has hundreds of 1st male cousins, who between them have many hundreds of sons and thousands of grandsons).

If the House of Saud implodes, there will be utter chaos. There are numerous other tribes , clans and sheikhs who have resented the way they've been treated by the House of Saud. They will all want to grab a piece of the pie.

The person who has talked for participation of women in society, and curbing extremism needs to be removed quickly? More power to His Highness, and may he clean the country from corruption and extremism and lead Saudi Arabia to glory.

You actually believe any of that? What do think will happen to all these Princes and leading businessmen he's arrested?

Do you think they're going to get a slap on their hands and then be set free? Or do you think they're going to be sentenced and sent to prison, thus ensuring that they remain a danger to his power as long as they are alive? Two are dead already, don't be surprised if more join them soon.

And what then? Everything becomes hunky-dory and peace on earth? Will that be before or after he starts a war with Iran, with Netanyahu and Trump pulling his strings?

If you think he's the new Messiah, then you my friend are seriously deluded.

You are too much into conspiracy theories or watch game of thrones. It is a fact that His Highness MBS has given freedom to women, talked against extremism, and for tolerance for all religions. HH MBS has shown exemplary courage, fortitude and moral conscience by not letting the wealth, status or reputation of the corrupt to protect them. Don't know why you are against such a person who is against corruption and extremism, and want him to be removed quickly ( what does that mean?) Anyway, you have your reasons to hate such a nobel man, I only know what every country needs leaders like him, who put the fear of the Almightly back into the hearts of those who work against the interests of the nation.

Already a fan of His Highness MBS. Looks like he will clean the system and will be Saudi Arabia's Erdogan.

I agree, his move to attack Yemen was a masterstroke which meant a lot of unused money would be spent on western arms and kill people by the thousands. But nonetheless most ignorant folk only look at his smaller achievements like allowing women to finally drive albeit wearing a bin-bag all the time!

Another one of his forgotten achievements was his efforts at trying to bring Qatar to its knees, albeit 6 months into this quagmire Qatar, Al jazeera have firmly stood firm while the survival of GCC is being put to the test!

The world is yet to realize how smart MBS is, and even less likely to understand how intelligent his followers are!

MbS is just the failson equivalent of Jared. Anybody with any sense would know that the unholy alliance of Trump-Netanyahu-MbS is the new Dajjal

I bet there is some saying re the sign of the end of days will be when the people are ruled by the most stupid amongst them and Trump and MbS certainly qualify

Trump was seriously intimidated by Waleed bin Talal, Waleed was throwing money behind congressmen to gain influence, just like the Zionist do.

I think a civil war is about to occur in Saudi Arabia, alot of innocent people will die.

Keep dreaming, MBS now controls all three branches of the Saudi Armed forces, the only thing left was National Guard which was under King Abdullah's son and MBS has ousted him now and taken over.

Any way the Saudi public is not the one which will jeopardise their life for a Royal Game of thrones, MBS would not shy from taking brutal action if any paid hooligans try to create violence, he has killed two of the princes in this purge, so anybody who even thinks about creating any chaos in the kingdom will think ten times before writing his own obituary.

MBS has decided a future for Saudi Arabia which is more liberal and open with low corruption and extremism And he has the full support of USA and Israel in his Grand Endeavour.

Or is your idea of "more liberal and open with low corruption and extremism" involve "brutal action" and murdering potential opponents, even if they are close family members such as 1st cousins?

.

Trump has certainly been vocal in his support for MBS, but the reasons will probably have little to do with liberal reforms which more than likely provide a nice cover story to pursue political and financial advantages for the USA/Israel.

No contradiction at all. HH MBS is not liberal on extremism and corruption. Just by seeing the kind of people opposing him, I am sure that he must be doing something right.

You must have a problem reading as you appear to have only seen the word "contradiction" and not seen the rest of the paragraph indicating what it referred to, ie the contradiction contained in the two paragraphs quoted from that PPers post. If you have a beef with it, take it up with the poster making those contradicting statements. Do learn to read properly. There's a good chap.

Hmm..That is true. I usually read the first and last lines of a post and skip the rest. So let me read again.
Ok. I read it properly this time, and still don't see any contradiction. His Highness MBS is harsh and brutal on the currupt and extremists. So you think a liberal must be tolerant to corruption and extremism?

So you think murdering potential opponents (and 1st cousins) is acceptable on the basis that they might challenge your power at some point in the future? Is that your definition of 'liberal'?

Just to remind you, this is what I was replying to.

This is scandalous to suggest that HH killed them Reddy. But even if HH did, I trust that it is the need of the hour. For too long the strict Saudi law applied only to the common person, but now even the billionaire princes are not beyond its reach. can only be a good thing and I salute and support the new direction HH is taking Saudi Arabia to.

So murdering one's cousins ,just in case they challenge one's authority at some point in the future, you believe to be ok since you "trust that it is the need of the hour"? You're now actually defending cold blooded murder?

Hey, at least he's being detained at the Ritz and not rotting in a jail cell (Salman is notorious to have a special jail cell in Riyadh for princess that go astray of the family path)

He doesn't seem to mind the Ritz.

A huge Middle East conflict seems to be on the cards. But I have to say the new crown prince it playing it smart locally liberalise socially to placate the population while at the same time destroy or control all other powers in the country.

Bro - I am also reading reports that he is alive well and and also under house arrest.

Who is to be believed? :danish

According to reports, Saudis are now almost openly working with Israel (a senior Prince, possibly MBS himself, secretly visited Israel to discuss policy).

The word is that both Saudis and Israelis see the closeness of Iran and Hezbollah as being against their interests. And Saudi Arabia (MBS with advice from the Dubai Crown Prince) is creating the conditions for Israel to justify attacking Hezbollah.

That's why Saudi Arabia has ordered all its citizens to leave Lebanon, and why the Lebanese PM Hariri was summoned to Riyadh and forced to resign hours later, whilst still in SA. Apparently he's 'being kept safe from Hezbollah' according to the Saudis, or prevented from leaving according to most Western diplomats who've met him.

MBS is like a spoiled little brat, but who's now managed to get the keys to the whole house, the garden as well as the garage containing all the real grown up toys - cars, guns, and real soldiers.

War is coming to the Middle East. And this will be the biggest yet. With the potential to drag in the Americans into attacking Iran in order to save the Saudis and the Gulf Arabs.
