The problem is alcohol is also a drug. If alcohol is legal, there is no basis for not making others legal. But I agree all should be illegal in a civilised society.

This is how it always starts. Dabbling in it a bit with the guise of “just keeping it for diplomats” and then the Muslims who witness it working closely to them will feel the desire to drink too, and it will have a (Allah forbid) a butterfly effect from there.

It’s the same thing with all the other major sins. Be firm in keeping away from them completely, because once you start making compromises here and there, those compromises will snowball into the Muslim society fully embracing the sin.

But most people who argue that they are custodians of the holy cities don't recognise Saudi family legitimacy anyway.

That’s true, and actions like this hurt their legitimacy further.

Best example I can give you is Banu Ummaya / Ummayad Dynasty.

Yazid had the worst “approval ratings” and his subsequent successors’ legitimacy was not widely recognized by the Ummah, but the reason people were ok with letting the Ummayad Dynasty rule after a couple more rulers was because they were upholding Islamic rule to a high standard. The moment a bit further down the line the monarch was an alcoholic, the Ummah revolted resulting in Waleed the king at that time getting overthrown due him entrenched in this sin and apparently others.

So while Saudi legitimacy is already questioned, actions like this will only hurt their legitimacy further in front of practicing Muslims.
