Hat-trick tonight.

What a player.

Surely one of the world's best finishers?

Gutted for him.

The knee injury looks a bad one. Hope he's not out for too long.

The best striker in the world after Suarez in my view (not considering Messi/Ronaldo as strikers) and gutted to see him get injured when he was in such golden form.

I think he is Madrid bound and will replace Benzema eventually.

Yesterday the news was at least 4 weeks, today he's out for up to 6 weeks. I think it will prob be around Feb by the next time we see him.

What a player! What a legend of the game, the PL and Man City and of course that legendary goal against QPR to win City their first title in 44 years.

He's only 32 and I think City could easily have got another couple of productive season out of him. But this is the story of elite football at the top level. I don't think Pep is giving him the respect that he deserves for giving so much to the team over the last 10 years.

One of the best strikers the PL has ever seen. Skillful, classy and absolutely frightening, he brought a lot of joy to football fans, maybe not so much the teams having to face his devastating finishing.

Thanks for the memories Sergio and wish you all the best for the future. AGUEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, the club has announced.

The 32-year-old striker's contract expires at the end of the season and he has been told it will not be renewed.

The Argentine, who signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has scored 257 goals in 384 appearances for the club.

"With the guidance of the owners and the contributions of many players, we earned a place among the greatest of the world," Aguero said.

He will be honoured by a statue at Etihad Stadium, alongside title-winning captain Vincent Kompany and influential playmaker David Silva, who left the club in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The trio played leading roles in City's renaissance, with Aguero famously scoring the injury-time winner against QPR in 2012 which clinched the club's first English title in 44 years.

Since then, the striker has helped City win three more Premier League titles, one FA Cup and five League Cups.

"Sergio's contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated," City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said.

"His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the club and maybe even in those who simply love football."

City's greatest ever player and one of the best strikers and foreign players the PL has had.

A bit of a sad end to his PL career with the injuries and illness. If he can regain his form, he is still good enough to play for a lot of top European sides. Could easily become first-choice striker for Barcelona, Juventus etc.

I think the time is right for both City and him to move on. City will try to bring in Haaland or Lukaku to build for the future.

Paris St-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino and sporting director Leonardo are working on closing a deal to bring Argentina forward Sergio Aguero to the French capital when the 32-year-old's time with Manchester City comes to an end in the summer. (Todo Fichajes)

Barcelona, however, are seen as favourites to land four-time Premier League winner Aguero, who has also been linked with Real Madrid and Juventus. (Manchester Evening News)

Linked with a few English clubs I see.

Leeds and Chelsea have both been mentioned.

Everton have joined Chelsea, Leeds United, Tottenham, Barcelona and Inter Milan in wanting to sign Argentina striker Sergio Aguero, who will be available on a free transfer when he leaves Manchester City in the summer.

Barcelona have held initial talks with representatives of Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero over a free transfer this summer.

One of the best strikers of this generation even after all the injuries he had endured in his career, I hope he could win CL in his last match for City.

Augeroooooooooooooooooooo

Sergio Aguero likely to undergo Barcelona medical after Champions League final

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could undergo his medical with Barcelona immediately after the Champions League final, Mundo Deportivo reports.

The Argentine is expected to leave the Cityzens when his contract expires this summer, and he has been fancied to make the switch to the Blaugrana.

The Catalan giants have already held talks with his representatives over a free transfer, and it is reported that the deal is ’80 percent’ done with a few formalities left.

Aguero is likely to undergo his medical shortly after the Champions League final against Chelsea, and a two-year deal could be signed by May 31.

If the logistics don’t work out, the move could be delayed until July with the striker due to play for Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers and Copa America.

Aguero has been linked with a move to Camp Nou for several months, and it appears that the Blaugrana are close to landing his signature.

The club have had a disappointing season by their high standards, but they have missed the presence of a genuine number nine in their ranks.

They opted against finding a replacement after offloading Luis Suarez last summer, which has led to an overdependence on Lionel Messi.

The Argentine has scored 35 goals this term. Griezmann is the only other player who has reached double figures with 14.

Aguero has had a tough season with injuries, coronavirus and competition for places, and there are no question marks over his quality in the final third.

The 32-year-old would provide an upgrade on the club’s only genuine striker in Martin Braithwaite. His arrival is likely to convince Lionel Messi to extend his stay.

Messi’s contract expires on June 30. Aguero shares a close bond with his compatriot, and it is anticipated that Messi will soon put pen-to-paper on a new deal.

Aguero, who is valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt, has registered 258 goals and 74 assists from 388 appearances for Manchester City.

22.5 MLN is a steal for Barcelona, he is still a top, top striker and City should have kept him for another year or two.

"King". "Magical". "Inspirational".

Asked to describe Sergio Aguero in one word, Jermaine Jenas, Micah Richards and Nedum Onuoha provide answers that say it all.

Manchester City striker Aguero leaves Etihad Stadium this summer after 10 years, 258 goals and unprecedented success at the club.

He has five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, six League Cup triumphs and, on 29 May, has the chance to add a Champions League medal to his collection.

His individual numbers are possibly even more impressive. He is City's all-time leading goalscorer. He has the best minutes-to-goals ratio in Premier League history. He has more Premier League hat-tricks than anyone else. He is the top overseas goalscorer in league history. And he is fourth in the Premier League all-time scorers list.

Now, with this season confirmed as his last at the club, former City team-mates Richards and Onuoha join ex-Tottenham and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas - and a few others - on a BBC Radio 5 Live special to discuss Aguero's impact and the legacy he is leaving behind.

The arrival of 'the genuine article'

Aguero joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 for £35m, aged 23. The Argentine had already helped Atletico to Europa League success, had won two Under-20 World Cups and claimed Olympic gold in 2008.

South American expert Tim Vickery: It always amazes me how little City had to pay and how little the competition was to sign him because he was already the genuine article. The first time I ever saw him in 2005 was when he was 16. The surprise was how complete he was.

He was strong, good on the ball, great in small space and there was a comparison that instantly leapt into my mind - the Brazilian Romario.

Before the player comes to Europe, there is always that question about how will they adapt. Atletico Madrid were horrified by his diet, red meat, fizzy drinks. They tried to work on his diet - so at the point City bought him, I couldn't see any risk whatsoever.

He had made it very clear he wanted out of Atletico. It has worked wonderfully for him because he has carried Manchester City to the next level and will forever be associated with the club.

'Worst trainer in the world' to 'superstar'

Aguero's Premier League debut came in City's opening game of the 2011 season. Brought on as substitute in the 59th minute with City 1-0 up against Swansea, the striker scored twice and created another to mark the start of what was to come.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards: From the moment he came through the door, you are in awe. You have that feeling of 'wow'. The only other time I had that was when Robinho came through the door. For us growing up, Shaun Goater or Nicolas Anelka was a big thing - so when Aguero comes through the door, you can't believe this is happening.

He was the worst trainer in the history of training. He had that laid-back style. Aguero would just walk around. Sometimes he wouldn't even have his boots tied up. But the moment it came to the finishing, it was game over. I thought he was going to be sensational but when I trained with him I thought 'have we made a mistake here?' I thought Tevez was better - but then he makes his debut…

The fans just erupted when he came on and it was like a genuine superstar here. You can't write it and from them I knew we had signed a player.

I was there for four years with him. With Aguero, you don't associate him with being a superstar in terms of how he was off the pitch. He was the most humble person ever.

Ex-Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha: I always found Aguero was a good guy to be around. The writing was on the wall for me but he still carried on around us. Someone like Sergio was as humble as they came.

In a very short space of time, it went from a team hoping to be in the top six to a team who expected to be top. Players such as Sergio had been brought in to win the league. The mentality had changed.

A 'quality marksman' who 'became iconic'

Aguero will always be remembered for that injury-time winner against QPR on the final day of the 2012 season that brought City their first Premier League title. But just a glance at the trophies he has won and goals he has scored show why Aguero will always be considered a legend at Etihad.

In his first season they won the league and he has barely been out of the top three in his entire time there. Ultimately if you have played with Sergio Aguero over the past 10 years, it means you have had a very, very good time.

For Manchester City, even though they were on their way up, a lot of people come through the doors hoping to leave and go somewhere bigger. But Sergio knew he was the project himself - and he has taken that role, he has become iconic.

With the way Manchester City have played over the last 10 years, you could not have asked for a better striker. He knows how to get to the right areas and that is understanding, skill and intelligence. His footballing IQ is out of this world.

If he doesn't do what he has done, City don't do what they have done over the past 10 years. If we are talking goalscorers, he has been the most important and best overseas player in Premier League history.

Richards: When you come to Manchester it is a great city and when you are the main man in Manchester, the fans are behind you, you win the Premier League. What more do you want? Man City were still growing and he was the missing piece in that puzzle.

Alan Shearer, the Premier League's all-time leading scorer: Class, quality, goals, touch technique. Just a wonderful all-round centre forward who has been brilliant for Manchester City and the Premier League.

He will always be remembered for that last-ditch goal that won City the title in 2012, arguably the most famous goal in Premier League history. That's what sets the quality forwards apart - they look so calm. If you wanted the ball to fall to anyone in that moment, it would have been Aguero.

City needed something, someone special to give them that piece of magic and that's what he delivered when they most needed him. He was a quality killer, a quality marksman.

We should admire him and respect him for what he has done for our league. It has been a joy to watch him. All we can say is thank you for the entertainment he has given us.

A statue or a big regret?

So what next for Aguero? He has had talks with Barcelona, while several Premier League clubs have also been linked with a move.

Richards: A statue for sure, 100%. He is a legend. Probably the best player ever for City for what he has done for the club and I can't believe we are getting rid of him.

I won't question Pep, but City are going to need to buy a striker soon. I believe we are letting him go one year too soon. We have seen what Edinson Cavani can do at Manchester United.

Onuoha: The statue thing is not for the players but for the fans and they like to remember the players. He has made Manchester his home. In my lifetime, he has been far and away the best City player we have ever seen. It is not even a question.

He has helped change the club - for £35m - his impact... City were not winning Premier Leagues before he came.

Sergio is now on the sidelines and watching City thrive. He will be unhappy. The sad thing is it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't play in the Champions League final.

Fabrizio Romano confirms: Sergio Aguero to Barcelona till 2023

The transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has dropped the three words Barcelona fans wanted to hear for so long, as they finally confirm the signing of a striker. The Italian journalist has given the ‘here we go’ on the move of the legendary Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero. At this point, the official announcement will be nothing but a courtesy.

Aguero will sign a contract that pens him to a two-year stay in the Catalan capital, and will have a bonus clause in case Barcelona win the Champions League during his tenure. The Argentine is turning 33 in June of this year, and could very well be with Barça by the time he turns 35.

Previous reports have stated that the official announcement is scheduled for the after the Champions League final against Chelsea, and a win in the competition would be an especially fitting farewell for a club legend. In fact, Aguero infamously quoted in 2014 that he would not leave Etihad without winning a UCL, and it seems the prophecy could fulfil itself pretty soon.

This could be the first in a long line of deals Barcelona pull off in the summer, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia pretty much next in line. They are also said to be targeting an established presence in the defence, and if push comes to shove, maybe even a midfielder. The biggest summer ever for Barcelona is on the cards, and Sergio Aguero is just the start.

And like all good fairy-tales there's a happy ending.

Aguero scores a lovely goal in his last appearance for Man City.

And like all good fairy-tales there's a happy ending.

Aguero scores a lovely goal in his last appearance for Man City.

And now another.

What a player, what a legend.

I do not even understand why they are letting him go? City can utilise his service for another year or two.

He gets hurt too much. They want to replace him with a younger less injury prone striker. Maybe Kane, but in a dream scenario for City with Haaland. And i doubt he wants a backup role.

Sergio Aguero is close to joining Barcelona next season, according to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Aguero, 32, will leave Etihad Stadium when his contract expires this summer after scoring 260 goals in 389 games for the club.

"Maybe I reveal a secret," Guardiola told the BBC's Match of the Day. "Maybe he is close to agreeing a deal for the club of my heart - for Barcelona.

"He is going to be playing alongside the best player of all time, Messi."

Guardiola added: "I'm pretty sure he is going to enjoy. And maybe Barcelona are stronger and stronger with him on the pitch."

Aguero marked his final appearance at Etihad Stadium with two goals as the new Premier League champions ended their domestic campaign with a thumping win over Everton.

BBC Sport's Guillem Ballague had revealed 10 days ago that Aguero was in talks with Barcelona.

"Sergio is a special person. It was a perfect game and a fairy tale moment, so good for him," an emotional Guardiola said after the game.

BARCELONA LAND AGUERO

Barcelona confirmed Sergio Aguero's arrival with a short statement on their official website. Aguero will join on a two-year deal, with a handsome buy-out clause inserted to his deal.

"FC Barcelona and Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero have reached an agreement for the player to join the club from 1 July when his contract with Manchester City expires.

"The player will sign a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season and his buy-out clause is set at 100 million euros."

Aguero will be presented to the media at a press conference at 6pm, UK time.

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero will be out for 10 weeks because of a right calf injury, say the La Liga club.

In a statement, Barca say tests on the Argentine forward have confirmed a tendon injury.

Aguero, 33, joined Barcelona from Manchester City on a two-year contract in June.

He spent 10 years at City, during which time he became the club's all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals in 390 games.

Aguero won the Copa America this year with Argentina, alongside compatriot and team-mate Lionel Messi, who has confirmed his departure from Barca.

Speaking at the time of his move to Spain, Aguero said: "We all know that Barcelona are the best club in the world.

"I think I made a great decision to be here and of course it is a step forward in my career."

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero will be out for three months after suffering chest pains during Saturday's match against Alaves.

The 33-year-old striker was withdrawn before half-time after receiving treatment for several minutes during the La Liga game at the Nou Camp, and underwent cardiac tests at hospital as a precautionary measure after leaving the ground in an ambulance.

In a tweet, Barcelona said: "He is unavailable for selection and, during the next three months, the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process."

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero said he is "always positive" after reports claimed he was considering retirement.

The Argentina forward, 33, was taken to hospital after suffering chest pains against Alaves last month.

Barca later announced he will not play for three months while he receives treatment and his health is monitored.

"Given the rumours, I tell them that I am following the indications of the club's doctors," Aguero said on social media.

"I'm doing tests and treatment and seeing my progress within 90 days."

Aguero became Manchester City's all-time leading scorer before joining Barcelona on a free transfer in July.

After starting the season with a calf problem, he made his debut last month and has scored once in five appearances for the Spanish side.

As initially reported by Catalunya Radio, Aguero may have to wait until February or March next year before being able to make a decision on his future, according to BBC Radio 5 Live's European football expert Guillem Balague.

Aguero joined Barca on a two-year deal in the summer, but the club have not considered rescinding his contract, said Balague.

Xavi has spoken out over speculation Sergio Aguero is set to retire because of heart problems, indicating the Barcelona forward's situation remains uncertain.

Reports in Catalan media on Saturday stated Aguero, 33, is expected to call time on his playing career due to recent heart trouble.

He was taken to hospital after Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Alaves at the end of October when he experienced chest pains and breathing difficulties during the game.

The Argentine was subsequently ruled out of action for three months following a cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) diagnosis.

After overseeing his first game as Barca manager, a 1-0 win over Espanyol, Xavi said: "About Kun Aguero I don't know anything. I spoke to him the other day and what came out is not certain.

"We don't have this information. We are in touch with him and we will follow the evolution of what he had and hopefully he can keep playing football.

"This is the information I have. I don't know where it came from [the news about Aguero's retirement]."

Sergio Aguero: Barcelona's former Man City striker set to announce retirement on Wednesday

Sergio Aguero is set to announce his retirement on Wednesday less than six months after joining Barcelona, reports Guillem Balague.

The 33-year-old has struggled with injuries and health problems since moving to Spain, making only five appearances for the Catalan side.

In his final game, on 30 October, he was substituted and taken to hospital after experiencing "chest discomfort".

Aguero finishes his career with 427 goals in 786 games.

A Premier League legend
While Aguero's time at Barcelona has not gone to plan, there can be no doubting his status as one of the foremost strikers of the 21st Century.

After starting out with Independiente in Argentina, he moved to Atletico Madrid, winning the Europa League in 2010 and scoring 101 goals in 234 appearances.

That record attracted the interest of an upwardly mobile Manchester City, who paid a reported £38m to bring him to Etihad Stadium. He would go on to become a club and Premier League legend during a 10-year spell in England.

Aguero left City in the summer having broken their all-time scoring record, with 260 goals in 390 games, including 16 hat-tricks.

He is the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history with 184 goals, nine more than France and Arsenal great Thierry Henry.

Only Alan Shearer (260), Wayne Rooney (208) and Andrew Cole (187) have scored more in the competition.

But no-one has a better minutes-per-goal record than Aguero in the Premier League. He averaged a goal every 107.9 minutes. Of players who have scored more than 15 goals, Henry is next on the list with one every 121.8 minutes.

The Argentine is also responsible for arguably the Premier League's most iconic moment, scoring with virtually the last kick of the 2011-12 season to seal a victory over Queens Park Rangers that earned Manchester City a first top-flight title since 1968 and denied fierce rivals Manchester United by virtue of goal difference.

He would go on to win five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and six League Cups during his time in England.

A sad end with Barcelona
Aguero's great friendship with compatriot Lionel Messi meant a move to Barcelona was an attractive one after it became clear he would be allowed to leave Manchester City.

He had won over City boss Pep Guardiola, who initially had concerns about the striker's ability to fit into his style of play, but injuries limited Aguero's playing time during his final season at Etihad Stadium.

But the switch to Barcelona went badly from the start. The club's financial problems meant there were problems registering their new signings, including Aguero.

And those same issues led to the departure of Messi to Paris St-Germain.

When Aguero was eventually registered, he suffered a calf injury that kept him out until October.

He scored a 90th-minute consolation in his only El Clasico appearance against Real Madrid, on 24 October, and three days later made his first start for the club.

But his withdrawal against Alaves on 30 October was followed by a "cardiac exam" and Aguero said on social media he would follow doctors' advice in making a decision about his playing future.

He said he would take 90 days to assess his progress, with reports suggesting he had been diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia - an irregular heartbeat.

But his decision, to be announced this week, has come sooner than expected.

His final contribution for Argentina came at the summer's Copa America, a substitute appearance in the quarter-final victory over Ecuador as La Albiceleste went on to win the trophy for the first time in 28 years.

Sergio Aguero: Barcelona's former Man City striker retires

Sergio Aguero has announced his retirement from football within six months of joining Barcelona from Manchester City.

Aguero, 33, made only five appearances for the Catalan side as a result of injuries and health problems since moving to Spain.

He was taken to hospital on 30 October after experiencing "chest discomfort" during a 1-1 draw with Alaves.

Aguero finishes his career with 427 goals in 786 games.

Aguero's incredible stats

Aguero is the fourth-highest scoring player in Premier League history with 184 goals in 275 games, behind only Alan Shearer (260), Wayne Rooney (208) and Andrew Cole (187). He is also the league's highest-scoring overseas player, having registered nine more goals than Thierry Henry (175).

Aguero scored every 108 minutes in the Premier League, comfortably the best rate in the competition's history. Indeed, he could play another 2,520 minutes (28 games) of Premier League football without scoring and would still have the best minutes-per-goal ratio of any top-flight player with more than 20 goals.

The Argentine scored 18 hat-tricks in his career, including 12 in the Premier League - a record in England's top flight.
He scored 20+ goals in all competitions in 12 of 13 campaigns between 2007/08 and 2019/20, reaching 30 or more on five separate occasions during his time at Manchester City.

Aguero scored 36 goals for Manchester City in the Champions League, the joint-highest total a player has registered for an English side in the competition's history (along with former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba).

He found the net against 128 different opponents, including the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

There were 16 years and 332 days between Aguero's first career goal in November 2004 (for Independiente) and his final strike for Barcelona - against Real Madrid in October 2021.

A Premier League legend

Despite an untimely end to his spell at Barcelona, there can be no doubting Aguero's status as one of the foremost strikers of the 21st Century.

Analysis - 'Unfinished business in Argentina but a magnificent legacy'
South American football expert Tim Vickery

There were still a couple of things to cross off on Aguero's list of things to do. One was to round off his career where it all started, at Independiente in Argentina.

When Independiente sold him to Atletico Madrid, they entirely rebuilt the stadium on the proceeds and it was always a dream of Aguero himself and of the club's fans that he would one day come back and play in the house he built

So scratch that one, it seems. The other one is another World Cup with Argentina because there are a couple of little holes in a fabulous career. One is the Champions League and the other is a great tournament. He did win the Copa America in the middle of the year, but he was a reserve, he hardly got on the field in the knockout stages and he didn't score.

Although he scored 42 goals for Argentina, and only two men have scored more - Gabriel Batistuta and Lionel Messi - he never truly had a great tournament and quite often come the end-of-season tournaments he was dragging his weary carcass around the field.

Maybe it is a shame Pep Guardiola didn't get his hands on him earlier because the best tournament he played was the last World Cup in Russia, where Argentina were otherwise an absolute shambles.

Now they are the best team they have been since he started playing for them, it would have been lovely for him to have one last go at the World Cup in a year's time.

It is not a moment of his choosing but what a legacy he has left and what a magnificent player he was.

Very unfortunate as he was a world class player at his peak, but his long term health must come first in the circumstances.

DM: Lionel Messi, Yaya Toure, Kevin De Bruyne and Alan Shearer lead tributes to 'incredible' ex-Man City striker Sergio Aguero as he announces his retirement from football aged 33... with even Barcelona's arch-rivals Real Madrid wishing him well!

Tributes have flooded in for Sergio Aguero after the Argentine striker announced his retirement from football at the age of 33 because of a heart condition.

The Barcelona striker broke down in tears as he confirmed the news at a press conference convened at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

And it didn't take long for former team-mates - especially those from Manchester City - and rivals alike to show their appreciation for one of the best goalscorers of the modern era.

Compatriot Lionel Messi wrote on Instagram: 'Practically a whole career together, Kun ... We lived very beautiful moments and others that were not so, all of them made us unite more and be closer friends. And we are going to continue living them together off the pitch.

With the great joy of lifting the America's Cup so little ago, with all the achievements you achieved in England… And the truth is that now it hurts a lot to see how you have to stop doing what you like the most because of what happened to you.

‘Surely you will continue to be happy because you are a person who transmits happiness and those of us who love you will be with you.

'Now a new stage of your life begins and I am convinced that you are going to live it with a smile and with all the illusion that you put into everything.

‘All the best in this new stage !!! I love you a lot, friend, I'm going to miss a lot being with you on the pitch and when we get together with the National Team !!! @Kun Aguero.'

His former City team-mate Yaya Toure wrote on Twitter: 'Sergio, my friend. I am sad to see you retire today but I am also excited for your future. You have so much to offer the game.

'We shared many great times and I feel blessed to have been your teammate. You will go down as one of the greatest. Playing alongside you was an honour!'

Another player who Aguero shared a dressing room with at the Etihad Stadium, goalkeeper Joe Hart, said: 'It is sad news. I think it goes without saying that the entire footballing world appreciates you for the player you are, everything you achieved in the game and all the smiles you put on people's faces.

'You were a great team-mate and a good friend. It is sad but I think it is important you look at all the amazing things you have done but good luck for the future, congratulations on an amazing career and stay safe.'

His old captain in Manchester, Vincent Kompany, was also quick to pay tribute to the striker on Twitter, writing: 'An extraordinary striker has retired from the game, but also a great team mate, a friend and a unique personality. Thanks and respect to an authentic Man City phenomenon.

'I wish you nothing but the best legend. @aguerosergiokun #Aguerooooo'

Former City defender Micah Richards simply tweeted a crown emoji in response to a clip from Barcelona's account showing Aguero struggling to contain his emotions as he spoke.

Another City legend, David Silva, wrote: 'Friend, I know it has been a difficult and hard decision you have had to make but you leave like a LEGEND.

‘For me it has been an honour to share so many moments together, on and off the field. You are my partner in crime! Good luck in your new chapter.’

Current City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne wrote: 'One of the best strikers ever! Want to wish you all the best for the future legend. See you soon.'

Riyad Mahrez added: 'One of the best to do it. Thank you for everything, take care bro.'

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: 'The facts speak for themselves - Sergio is quite simply the most ruthless striker in the history of the Premier League.

'It is extraordinary that his statistics, more reflective of two careers, are in fact those of a player whose time in the game was cut short.

'His impact lives not only in the club that we are today, but in the club that we will be for many years to come.

'He has earned the adoration of the City family, and the respect of the football family the World over.'

The Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking ahead of his team's match against Newcastle United on Thursday said: 'First and foremost, I really feel for the boy. I'm sure he is still in shock.

'The impact he had on football was incredible. The goals he scored, the importance of the goals he scored. Great player. One of the best I ever faced.'

Former England striker and Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer tweeted his appreciation: 'Happy retirement legend. What an incredible player. Stay well.'

The former Chelsea and England defender John Terry wrote on Twitter: 'One of the greatest premierleague players EVER. LEGEND.'

Aguero's former colleague from his Atletico Madrid days, Luis Garcia, said: 'Congratulations Kun for your amazing career. We have enjoyed so much with your skills, goals and creativity, but also with your kindness and love for those around you.

'All the best for whatever comes next and be well mate.'

Atletico, where he played prior to joining City, wrote: 'Thanks for the memories Sergio. We wish you all the best.'

Even rival clubs were keen to express their gratitude to Aguero for lighting up football matches.

Barcelona's arch-rivals Real Madrid tweeted: 'It was an honour to compete against a player like you, @aguerosergiokun, one of the best players in the world. Best of luck to you and your family.'

Tottenham wrote: 'Congratulations on a remarkable career, Sergio.'

Sergio Aguero says he is "proud" of his career after accepting the "very difficult" reality of retiring from the sport to protect his health.

The 33-year-old sobbed while announcing the news on Wednesday, fewer than six months after joining Barcelona.

The former Manchester City striker was taken to hospital on 30 October after experiencing "chest discomfort" during a 1-1 draw with Alaves.

"The decision I have made, I have taken it for my health," said Aguero.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was among a small crowd watching Aguero make the announcement next to the Nou Camp pitch.

Aguero, who ends his career with 427 goals in 786 games, took time to compose himself after crying at the start of the event and added: "This conference is to communicate that I have decided to stop playing football. It's a very difficult moment.

"When they did the first physical test on me in the clinic, the medical staff called me to tell me there was a very big possibility that I wouldn't be able to keep playing. From that point I was processing it all but it wasn't easy. One of the doctors told me straight up, 'that's enough'.

"I want to tell everyone that I did everything possible. I dreamt about playing football since I was five years old and I first touched a ball. I never thought I would get to Europe, so I want to show my gratitude to everyone regardless of where I trained.

"I'm proud of the career I've had and am fortunate it is happening to me now rather than before. I don't know what awaits me in the next life but I know there are a lot of people who love me and want the best for me."

What a great player and servant to the sport.

One of my all-time favourite footballers.

Such a shame that he had to retire so soon after signing for Barcelona.

Retired to soon without doubt. A great players for sure who achieved almost everything in the game. Rightfully he could not risk his health so called it a day. The correct decision.

His last minute goal to win Man City the title is quite possibly the greatest moment in the history of the Premier League.

No doubt.

What drama, what skill, what commentary.

This guy had that ability to score a goal from nothing.

Manchester City to unveil Sergio Aguero statue on title anniversary

Manchester City will unveil a statue of club legend Sergio Aguero on the 10th anniversary of his title-clinching goal, it has been revealed.

The Argentine famously scored in injury-time against QPR to lead the club to Premier League success in 2012.

The unveiling will be centrepiece of a day of anniversary celebrations at the club's Ethiad Stadium on 13 May.

The club said it would honour the striker's "legacy" and "one of the greatest comebacks".

Aguero's strike in the fourth minute of added time in the final game of the Premier League 2011-12 season delivered City's first league title since 1968.

His statue, which has been crafted by sculptor Andy Scott, will stand alongside the artist's statues of Aguero's teammates Vincent Kompany and David Silva at the stadium.

Manchester City said it was "delighted" to be holding events in Manchester and across the globe to celebrate "what was arguably one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history".

"Sergio Aguero's legacy will be honoured through the unveiling of a statue designed and created by renowned sculptor, Andy Scott," a spokesman said.

Two-thousand of the club's fans will also be given the chance to attend an event which will see key members of the title-winning squad, including Aguero, interviewed on stage.

Aguero, who left City in June 2021 after scoring a club record 260 goals and winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and six League Cups over 10 years, retired on health grounds in December.

The 33-year-old remains the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history with 184 goals, nine more than France and Arsenal great Thierry Henry.

Only Alan Shearer (260), Wayne Rooney (208) and Andrew Cole (187) have scored more in the competition, but no-one has a better minutes-per-goal record than the Argentine, who averaged a goal every 107.9 minutes.

Sergio Aguero admitted he was grateful to Manchester City as his former club prepared to unveil a statue celebrating their record scorer's most famous goal.

Aguero memorably netted the stoppage-time strike against QPR that sealed City's Premier League title triumph at the Etihad Stadium in 2012.

The Argentine forward's 93rd minute goal gave City their first English title since 1968, with the added bonus of pipping arch rivals Manchester United on the last day of the season.

Friday marks the 10th anniversary of Aguero's dramatic contribution to City's rise, which now includes five top-flight titles under the club's Abu Dhabi-based owners.

Aguero went on to score a record 260 goals for City before leaving to join Barcelona last year.

The 33-year-old retired in December due to a heart condition, but his legendary status at City will now be immortalised with a statue outside the ground.

The sculpture, which it is understood depicts Aguero's shirt-waving celebration after scoring against QPR, will be unveiled to coincide with Friday's anniversary.

"Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me," said Aguero, who is also due to attend a reunion party for City's 2011-12 squad.

"In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

"I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.

"I remember I was very young, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving."

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said it was important to acknowledge the role Aguero's most celebrated goal played in the club's history.

"It's the moment that, I think, changed everything," said Khaldoon. "If you look at the 10 years since, that was the moment that introduced what lies ahead.

"He is absolutely deserving and, I think, a legend for this club."

It is a very beautiful thing for me - Aguero

Manchester City

Sergio Aguero's goal came with 93 minutes and 20 seconds on the clock to cap his first season with Manchester City in style.

The Argentine went on to score a record 260 goals for City before leaving the club last summer and City announced then that they would honour the player with a statue outside their stadium.

Aguero retired from the game last December following a short stint with Barcelona because of a heart condition but the 33-year-old is back in Manchester today and is due to attend a reunion party for City's 2011-12 squad.

"Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me," he said. "In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

Aguero lifts trophy with Argentina players

Former Argentina striker Sergio Aguero, who was forced to retire a year ago due to a heart problem, has joined his countrymen in celebrating their World Cup triumph.

Aguero, 34, is a close friend of many of the Argentina players and appeared jubilant as he held aloft the trophy alongside the squad.

Feel bad for Aguero. Surely if he wasn't forced to retire, he would have been a part of the Argentina team.
