Several dead and injured in explosion at Swiss ski resort town Crans-Montana, police say

Several people have been killed and others injured when an explosion ripped through a bar in the luxury Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana, Swiss police said early on Thursday.

“There has been an explosion of unknown origin,” Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesperson in Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland, told AFP.

“There are several injured, and several dead.”

He said the explosion took place at about 1:30am (0030 GMT) in a bar called Le Constellation, which is popular with tourists, as revellers rang in the new year.

The BBC also reported that several people were killed and others injured in the blast, citing police.

Images published by Swiss media showed a building in flames, and emergency services nearby.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun.

Bar explosion. Seems like an accident (like that Goa night club fire). Let's see what the investigation finds.

Sad news.

Hopefully the identity of the culprits is identified soon so that people can direct hate comments disguised as care for human life towards the exact group.

Oh... terrorism now enters in Switzerland also...... RIP to deceased

99% of the worlds explosions are not terrorism . It’s best to wait but maybe you are hoping it’s terrorism for some strange reason.

Condolences to the families
Well both of them are hoping, infact, one of them is sure that it's a terrorist attack. Both of them ran away from the Bondi Beach thread, I wonder why? :inti

Britain looted trillions of dollars worth of wealth from Mahabharat and yet unfortunately some desis make a huge deal of a low level theft.

Supposedly the reason for the explosion was faulty batch of fireworks.

It shows the complete frailty of life. Killed by the very fireworks that were going to be used to celebrate the new year, a few minutes before the year began.

Brother a new year has started.

Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you want to spend your precious time in 2026 on low quality trolling after people have died.

Terrorists don't follow new year it seems...
But when i just said Terrorist attack, why u all ppls frightened?

Why do you assume it is terrorism? No mention of terrorism yet. :inti

It could be a bar explosion like that Goa nightclub fire. Let's see what the investigation finds.

It shows that some people are looking to put the blame on Muslims even before there is enough information out to confirm one way or the other. Very revealing of the mindset.

Around 40 people killed, Italian foreign ministry says, citing Swiss police

As we've reported, Swiss authorities believe "several dozen" people have died in the fire - and say they can't be more specific.

Now, the Italian foreign ministry, citing Swiss police, say they believe around 40 people have died.

The ministry adds the victims could not be immediately identified because of the severity of their burns, Reuters reports

Fire triggered a flashover or backdraft, which caused further blasts

There was some early confusion in the immediate aftermath of the incident, when it was unclear if some kind of explosive device had been involved. Police officials have said this was not the case.

It now appears that the tragedy was started with a fire that then caused an explosion inside Le Constellation bar.

AP reports:

While officials said Thursday it was too early to determine the fire’s cause, investigators have already ruled out that it could have been an attack.

The Swiss officials called the blaze an “embrasement généralisé,” a French firefighting term describing how a blaze can trigger the release of combustible gases that can then ignite violently and cause what English-speaking firefighters would call a flashover or a backdraft.

Victims suffered from serious burns and smoke inhalation.

So sad man, death is always around the corner. They never got to experience the new year they were gathered to celebrate.

A lesson for us all.

Like a cat, you have climbed up to the ledge of a tall building and confused now, how to come down...stay there!

Don't think only bomb blasts means terrorists attack.....why u ppls get confused and frightened after hearing terrorist attack?...

Swiss investigators rush to identify victims of New Year's fire

It is not yet clear what set off the blaze at Le Constellation, killing around 40 people and injuring about 115 others, many seriously.

Bystanders described scenes of panic and chaos as people tried to break the windows to escape and others, covered in burns, poured into the street.

Swiss police warned it could take days or even weeks to identify everyone who perished, an agonising wait for family and friends.

"We've tried to reach our friends. We took loads of photos and posted them on Instagram, Facebook, all possible social networks to try to find them," said Eleonore, 17. "But there's nothing. No response."

"Even the parents don't know," she added.

The exact number of people who were at the bar when it went up in flames remains unclear, and police have not specified how many are still missing.

Le Constellation had a capacity of 300 people, plus another 40 people on its terrace, according to the Crans-Montana website.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who took over on Thursday, called the fire "a calamity of unprecedented, terrifying proportions", and announced that flags would be flown at half mast for five days.

"Behind these figures are faces, names, families, lives brutally cut short, completely interrupted, or forever changed," Parmelin said at a press conference.

"Given the international nature of the Crans resort, we can expect foreign nationals to be among the victims," local police commander Frederic Gisler said.

'The apocalypse'

The fire broke out around 1:30 am (0030 GMT) Thursday at Le Constellation, a bar popular with young tourists.

"We thought it was just a small fire -- but when we got there, it was war," Mathys, from neighbouring Chermignon-d'en-Bas, told AFP. "That's the only word I can use to describe it: the apocalypse."

Nathan, who was in the bar before the blaze, saw burned people streaming out of the site.

"They were asking for help, crying out for help," he said.

Authorities have declined to speculate on what caused the tragedy, saying only that it was not an attack.

Several witness accounts, broadcast by Swiss, French and Italian media, pointed to sparklers apparently mounted on champagne bottles and held aloft by restaurant staff as part of a regular "show" for patrons who made special orders to their tables.

There were "waitresses with champagne bottles and little sparklers. They got too close to the ceiling, and suddenly it all caught fire", Axel, a witness, told the Italian media outlet Local Team.

The canton's chief prosecutor, Beatrice Pilloud said investigators would look into whether the bar met safety standards and had the required number of exits.

Red and white caution tape, flowers and candles adorned the street where the tragedy occurred, while police shielded the site with white screens.

The European Union said it has been in contact with Swiss authorities about providing medical assistance, while French President Emmanuel Macron said some of the injured were being cared for in French hospitals.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Italian broadcaster Rete 4 that around 15 Italians had been injured in the fire, and a similar number remained missing.

The French foreign ministry said nine French citizens figured among the injured, and eight others remained unaccounted for.

Multiple sources told AFP that the bar owners are French nationals: a couple originally from Corsica who, according to a relative, are safe, but have been unreachable since the tragedy.

I think those who respond to such low grade trolls need to look in the mirror.

Deny these cultists the oxygen by ignoring them.

Switzerland is a small country and it's heavily depends on tourism..... therefore they will not openly admit it as a terrorist attack or sabotage.... otherwise there will be decline in tourism
