Shadab Khan has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee and received one demerit point after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during Monday’s Twenty20 International against the Windies in Karachi.

The Pakistan wrist spinner was found to have violated Article 2.1.7 of the code, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.

In addition to the fine for his breach, one demerit point has been added to Shadab’s disciplinary record.

The incident happened in the ninth over of the Windies’ innings when Shadab, after dismissing Chadwick Walton, pointed his finger at the departing batsmen and also made an inappropriate comment.

After the match, Shadab admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Shozab Raza and Ahmed Shahab, third umpire Ahsan Raza, as well as fourth umpire Khalid Mahmood.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Wow. Didnt expect this. Thought it wasnt anything serious.

How many demerit points does Kohli have by the way?

Harsh but given the context he shouldnt be sledging the WI team

If this was done in the CT no one would care

Bad for a budding cricketer, needs to keep a lid on things

Good.

Getting over excited bowling these club batsmen out and then abusing in a language they don't even have a clue of!

Not called for, when WI is playing this series not only for $, also with lot of good will to support Pak Cricket.

Morever, this is very poor WI team to show aggression !

I think a fine would have been enough, how can a demerit point be awarded when this is normal behaviour for Aussie bowlers?

Well it wasn't really on by Shadab. But, how on earth do you get a demerit point for this. Kohli does this alot, and so do other players from around the world.

Players should remember their limits. Hoping Shadab gets taken to the cleaners against a more worthy opposition, which should help bring him back down to earth.

Reminds me of when Umar Gul was being abusive towards the Canadian batsman Balaji Rao in the 2011 world cup. Then later on when the stakes were real high at Mohali, he got taken to the cleaners by Sehwag and was an absolute failure. But thankfully it was a humbling experience for him.

Balaji Rao was clearly abusive that day
and what a lame theory you have that a player should be taken to cleaners to bring him back to earth.
By that logic Wasim akram, imran khan , shoaib akhtar , virat kohli ,McGrath , Warne etc etc etc have been pathetic throughout their career

Another player getting demerit points. When will this bullying stop :ssmith

Anyone know what was said? Shadab was pretty aggressive in his send off to Walton, who batted well, sent Shadab for 6 and 4 earlier.

If he has said something really insulting or demeaning then fair play - though you hope the game is not trying to become too sanitized (SA/Australia's behavior to one another doesn't reflect all - even then its only some of the players who take it beyond reproach).

Really like Shadab by the way, very, very talented young man.

Not disagreeing with the punishment for bad sportsmanship but this has to be applied uniformly for all teams, as someone said above this kind of thing is normal and routine thing by Aussie bowlers.

Pakistani umpires flexing their muscles on their own players. I would like to see them apply these rules on the 'win at all costs' mentality foreign players.

Upon watching the clip of Shadab's dismissal of Walton again, it's clear why they penalized him. Honestly best thing is for players to just avoid saying it to begin with. Umpiring standards aren't the same all over the world anyways so players in some other part of the world might get away with this.

Balaji was provoked by the Pakistani players. Umar Gul was way in over his head against a minnow team. I mean he should have had some humility. If you wanna act tough, then atleast back it up by performances against top teams in high stake games. Umar Gul was an abject failure in that regard. He was shown his "awqaat" by Sehwag and Raina in Mohali.

Players should stay on earth and not get carried away as they are representing their country at the international stage and should behave themselves, including Shadab. Sorry but this whole unnecessary focus on passion and aggression is the reason why balltampering-gate took place.

It was appalling to see Shadab like that, he needs to control himself and show some class.

Too harsh but important lesson for budding cricketer... We don't want a bunch of foul mouthed Kohlis running around

Kohli's got one for throwing the ball on the ground in anger in SA. But as soon as he gets to 3, BCCI will reset it to zero

Personally, think this is too harsh, I don't see a problem with sledging and being aggressive, don't want to make cricket a dull sport. Could have given him a warning for the cursing or whatever.

The B word is used SO OFTEN by Pak/India cricketers that if the stump mic was on all the time or a bit more sensitive, you'd hear it on TV after every bad ball, good ball, boundary, dismissal.

It's a fact.

However, WHERE you direct the B word and at what time.. that determines if you'll be punished.

Shadab got his wicket and started swearing at him directly, facing him, when all the cameras were on him.

Using B word randomly in the field, especially when not facing the batsman, close to him, will not result in any punishment.

Wait, first he curses at him in the game and then 'Mocks' him after the 3-0 loss by taking a clearly smug picture with him...100 Demerit Points, off you go Shadab for murder!

Suddenly I'm reminded of Aussie philosophy of banter. Abuse someone on family, race and every subject imaginable and try to get together for beer after the match. :smith

Kohli obsession is too much in PP. Some newbie got punished for uttering crap vs WI team, people take out frustration on Indian captain. As if it's Kohli's fault

Chadwick and Shadab play for ISLU isn’t it who are the champions. And this is bad from Shadab to foul mouth a team member where they help to revive int’l cricket in ur country. Totally Unnecessary.

It is khcoli's fault to some degree. He has adopted Aussie 'agression' in civilized world and we are seeing fallout of that across whole cricketing world.

Unpopular opinion: it's a short, momentary and spontaneous show of emotion, big deal, move on. He needs to learn to abide by the rules laid down, but I'll cut him a lot of slack because I have an issue with the rules. Penalizing showing your eyeballs and saying a bad word? what is this, primary school?

No point comparing to Kohli if someone got punished by officials, Kohli never asked any youngster to follow his aggression. If Kohli breaks rules he will rightfully get penalised by ICC :ssmith :dw
