Sizzling spells, sheer display of pace and swing and some magical moments – the winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Player of the Year had a year to remember in 2021. Here, we take a look at his efforts and celebrate some outstanding achievements.

Shaheen Afridi – Pakistan

78 wickets in 36 internationals at an average of 22.20. Best bowling figures of 6/51.

The year that was

The tall Pakistani quick was on fire throughout 2021, knocking some of the best batters over across all three formats of the game. He especially had a year to remember in Tests and T20Is, reaching his peak during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in UAE where he impressed one and all with his sheer speed and skills.

He would take seven wickets in six matches during the tournament in Pakistan's run to the semi-final. He ruled the shortest format throughout the calendar year, scalping 23 wickets in 21 matches with his death bowling improving by leaps and bounds.

After a slow start to the year in Test cricket in New Zealand, Afridi burst to life during the home series against South Africa. He continued his brilliant form throughout the rest of the year in the away tours of Zimbabwe, West Indies and Bangladesh. Overall, he claimed 47 wickets in only nine matches at a staggering average of 17.06.

Swing, seam, sheer pace and sizzling yorkers – Shaheen Shah Afridi gave an exhibition of it all in the year 2021.

Memorable spell

A high-pressure encounter against India in Dubai beckoned in October. The T20 World Cup tournament opener for both sides with the history well and truly against Pakistan. But Afridi's opening burst changed it all and evoked audible gasps from one and all at the wizardry on display.

He would first trap Rohit Sharma with a late in-dipper. This would be followed by the dismissal of KL Rahul, who saw his stumps knocked over with another peach of a delivery. India simply could not recover from this, slumping to their first-ever defeat against Pakistan at a World Cup. Later on, he would also get the prized scalp of Virat Kohli in the death overs.

The numbers (3/31) simply do not do justice to what everyone witnessed from Shaheen on that fateful day in Dubai.

What they said

Indian captain Virat Kohli was left in awe of Afridi's spell during the match-up. Heaping praises, Kohli said post-match: “He put our batsmen under pressure immediately with the new ball, and he ran in with intensity and showed that he's bowling in consistent areas, so as batsmen you are forced to be a bit watchful.

“That spell kind of put us on the back foot immediately, and from there on to get those extra 20, 25 runs, in the end, seemed pretty difficult when you lose three wickets for 20 runs.”

Deserves it. The first and only pakistani to win this award.

Now this guy will be respected and we can move on from the talks of amir and asif etc.

Sheer hard work and determination. While the likes of amor cry, Shaheen played all 3 formats and what a performance.

Great year for pakistan. 4 pakistans winning an award.

This is the single greatest achievement by a Pakistani in the cricket field. Immensely proud. Massive congratulations to Shaheen!!!!!

Great achievement. What a year for Pakistan at ICC awards and this just caps it off perfectly.

Mashallah well deserved and congratulations to Shaheen, has all the potential to excel any of our previous great fast bowlers and has already created himself a legacy with this award.

I hope he can be protected and played properly...

Should not be playing against likes of Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and shld be rested in most T20s apart from top4/5

manage him properly ... thts a begging request

Incredible, congrats to Shaheen and all Pakistan fans. Can’t recall a time when Pakistan swept the awards like this.

Hopefully Shaheen can build on this, the most exciting bowler in the world! a joy to watch

Mashallah great achievement. Need to stay grounded and inshallah remain injury free for more such performances.
Congratulations and best wishes.

What an achievement and that too at such a young age. He was the most consistent cricketer in all 3 formats in 2021 and thoroughly deserved the award.

Congratulations!

Had it existed, previous Pakistani winners would have been:

Imran Khan 1983 for 1982
Imran Khan 1988 for 1987
Wasim Akram 1993 for 1992 and possibly 1990 for 1989.

Well done, supreme talent at such a young age and will only keep getting better as a bowler.

Earned it. He was outstanding in Tests and T20Is last year. The fact that he is the first Pakistani cricketer to win this award is also quite a remarkable achievement.

great stuff, and at such a young age, hope he stays fit and builds on this. good series' versus aus, and sl away are excellent chances for him to build his growing stature.

needs to have his workload managed tho, seems to handle the workload pretty well, but pak should seriously consider avoiding playing him in bilateral odis and t20is where possible.

Amazing. a fantastic young talented player - congratulations.
No reason he can do even better, if he continues in this manner. I guess if he improves his bowling round the wicket and bring it in, also if bowls a few more slower ones, he will be even more difficult to face.

One of those rare bowlers who isn't afraid to pitch it up! His bowling is fun to watch.

Let's hope he doesn't get injured and stays away from typical controversies.

Insha'Allah a future legend.

2006 Ricky Ponting
2007 Ricky Ponting
2008 Shivnarine Chanderpaul
2009 Mitchell Johnson
2010 Sachin Tendulkar
2011 Jonathan Trott
2012 Kumar Sangakkara
2013 Michael Clarke
2014 Mitchell Johnson
2015 Steve Smith
2016 Ravichandran Ashwin
2017 Virat Kohli
2018 Virat Kohli
2019 Ben Stokes
2021 Shaheen Afridi

Since 2004, Johnson (mother of all purple patches and England batting), Ashwin (home tracks) and Shaheen have been the only bowlers to win it. What a tremendous achievement.

Well deserved.

It’s scary when you think there’s so much more he can improve on and become an even more potent cricketer. Shaheen dazzles as much as he frustrates, hopefully he kicks on and becomes one of the biggest match-winner in world cricket, which he certainly does have the potential to do so.

Congratulations to the young man.

Greatness awaits him if he doesn't let all this fame and adulation get to his head.

Personally, I think those two balls to Rohit and Rahul gave him this award otherwise this would've gone to Joe Root. Well deserved though.

Great achievement. Should not let this award get to his head because he still has a long way to go to. There are clear areas where he needs to work on like death bowling in T20s and bowling with the old ball in Test cricket.

I think his ball to Finch was the ball of the year. 148 km/hr inswinger.

Translation: Johnson and Ashwin didn’t deserve it on merit but Shaheen did. Insightful comment.

Shaheen is fantastic but let’s face it, Joe Root got robbed in daylight as much as Stokes did in the 2019 World Cup when ICC decided to hand the Player of the Tournament award to Williamson as a compensation for the circumstances in which New Zealand lost the final.

We all know that Joe Root was the standout cricketer of the year. He did not play much ODI cricket and no T20I cricket, but Test cricket has the greatest weightage.

He almost broke up the record for most runs in a calendar year, a year where all other batsmen in his team batted like tail-enders.

Few batsmen in history have been so far ahead of his their teammates over a period of 12 months than Root was in 2021.

Well deserved great achievement from Shaheen

Hes had a superb 2021 for pakistan and is now truly coming to the fore as a top top bowler

It is said that Shaheen won the award when he dismissed Rohit and Rahul and that might be true, but he also cost Pakistan the World Cup by bottling it against Australia.

How can you hand over the player of the year award to a player who cost his team in this fashion? Sure Hassan dropped the catch, but that did not justify Shaheen getting smashed for 3 consecutive sixes by a deeply mediocre batsman like Wade.

That over should have killed his chances of becoming the player of the year, but we all know that these so-called awards have become meaningless and have lost credibility because they have become charity business.

By your logic then, Ben Stokes the legend also bottled it up against Carlos Brathwaite...

One of two bad performances do not contradict good performances

Secondly, the game was lost when Hassan Ali dropped the catch, not when Shaheen 'bottled' it up.

This is a great achievement For young Shaheen.

Above and beyond from here you youngster beauty :waqar

Sour grapes

Has been brilliant for a while now. Fully deserves this award.

Mitch actually won it twice, and more for performances against South Africa than against England.

What stupid logic. Then again what can you expect from someone like you.

What a fabulous bowler.

He is what Mitchell Starc could have been if he had a brain.

Shaheen isn’t quite as quick as Starc, but he has the same angle, the same lift and unlike Starc he can use a red ball because he bowls a better line and length.

Even Yousuf didn't win the Cricketer of the year award when he actually broke the record for most runs in a calendar year unlike Root.

He had a good year but I somewhat agree in tests he did well against West Indies Zimbabwe and Bangladesh minnow bashing basically failed in the crunch moment in the world T20 bowled well against India.

This year if he bowls well against Aus NZ Eng in tests and bowls well in the world T20 he would deserve it last year it was mostly minnow bashing and one good spell against India.

Even Yousuf didn't win the Cricketer of the year award when he actually broke the record for most runs in a calendar year unlike Root.

Yousuf was well supported by Younis, Inzamam and others. Root had no one.

Root’s 2021 was vastly superior to Yousuf’s 2006 and more than worthy of securing the Cricketer of the Year Award.

It is a fact. Shaheen choked under pressure and cost Pakistan the title. He didn’t deserve to win.

You can’t expect him to get a wicket every ball. The fact is, he should’ve had Wade’s wicket and those 6’s wouldn’t have happened. But, our genius captain thought it was a good idea to put Hasan Ali at long on after getting smashed all over the park.

Also, it’s almost impossible to 20 runs in the last 2 overs, we saw that throughout the tournament. Wade had zero pressure, it wouldn’t have mattered if he had gotten out or not, he had Stoinis at the other end and plenty of wickets in hand.

Oh now it’s about supporting players…lol

What are you trying to say?

The first paragraph suggests if Hasan had taken that catch, Pakistan would have won.

But you've gone the other direction with the 2nd para.

Was watching the game again yesterday. Just because :jimmy

At the beginning of the over, Wade was practicing the scoop and Rizwan suggested a player being moved to deep fine leg which was vetoed by Babar. Wade would still have perhaps played the shot because he was clearing the field with ease, but who knows....

It is a fact. Shaheen choked under pressure and cost Pakistan the title. He didn’t deserve to win.

Going by your logic, Kohli didn't deserve to win either in 2017/18...as he choked in crunch ICC games and failed to win any title while Smith outperformed him in tests anyway.

So ICC should reward Root for the mediocrity of Sibley, Burns, Butler and co.

Infact Yousuf actually had a better claim to the Cricketer of the year award....as unlike Root he had a decent year in ODIs too and scored more test runs than Root in much lesser games

You cant give the player of the year award to someone who only played 1 format! Root performed great in Test and was rewarded with the Test Player of the year naturally. Same case can be made for Rizwan...Shaheen was the only one who contributed well in all 3 formats.

I personally feel that Root deserved it more because "test cricket has the greatest wieghtage".
But why don't you apply that logic when comparing players?! Again, you are showing your colors and trying to downgrade a Pakistani player however you can.

That depends on the situation. Had Shaheen took wickets against world class lineups in Test cricket, then that + his performances in white ball cricket would have made him a worthy winner of the award in spite of the bottle-job vs Australia in the semifinal.

However, Shaheen did nothing but dominate weak lineups. He started the year by getting hammered in New Zealand which has been the story of his Test career so far - he has consistently flopped against big teams.

Read my reply to Mobashir.

Yousuf scored 600+ runs against a mediocre West Indies attack on Pakistani motorways, while Root consistently played in tough batting conditions against top class attacks.

Yousuf was stellar in 2006, but Root was simply better in 2021. Played in tougher conditions against better quality bowling and had no support from his teammates.

So ICC should reward Root for the mediocrity of Sibley, Burns, Butler and co.

Correct. Root produced one of the greatest years in history for a Test batsman while playing against top attacks in tough conditions and without any support from his teammates. In addition, he also had the burden and pressure of captaincy.

It is a joke to see him getting robbed of the award. He deserved it as much as any player ever did.

Going by your logic, Kohli didn't deserve to win either in 2017/18...as he choked in crunch ICC games and failed to win any title while Smith outperformed him in tests anyway.

Kohli failed in CT final but he didn’t single-handedly lost his team the final. It was a collective meltdown by the entire Indian team and he failed just like every other player excluding Pandya.

But Shaheen like Ajmal in 2010 and Waqar in 1996 single-handedly cost Pakistan the match thanks to bottling under pressure.

Pakistan had the game in the hand and he blew it. That choke should have ruled him out of the running for the Cricketer of the Year award.

I am not sure the weight ICC gives to the oppositions but, in Shaheen's case while he didnt play much tests against the top 3 sides the impact he had in test cricket as well as other formats for there to be noticed. So it has to be a weighted average of few things. Shaheen has atleast played against regular test playing nations. Rashid Khan won the T20 international cricketer of the decade playing 1 T20I match against Pak, SA, NZ, Ind, Eng, Srl each and none against Aus.

Giving someone T20I cricketer of the decade award by performing against associates or lower ranked team is a bigger question mark in my opinion then Shaheen who has played against regular test playing nations (SA, WI, BD) and delivered throughout the year, winning player of the year.

Yes the year could have been tougher to get such results with more SENA tours but, such opportunity of more home series, playing against lower ranked teams comes for other cricketers as well.

There's really no comparison between what Yousuf achieved vs what Root has, MoYo had 10 less innings to get the runs in.

This ICC award is of great honor to us. First Pakistani to win it, and couldnt think of a better bowler than SSA. Was already the best young bowler in the world. Has ingredients to be the best in the world, almost there, keep it up! Super proud to be his fan from day 1 and one of his biggest supporters.

Being the youngest player to win the award is a astonishing achievement.

Hopefully he will lead the attack for years to come.

Diamond our Shaheen is.

I'd agree. MoYo & Viv had extraordinary years, avg 90 & a century every 2 or 2.5 innings.

Root had a very good year, in which he happened to play a lot of test matches. Avg of 60, a century every 5 innings or so. A very good season but not a locked in MVP winner.

Well done Shaheen. He's been an extraordinary find, leading a Test bowling unit from such an age so reliably.

Starc has a great slingy type of action, prob why he has more pace.

Shaheen is far more skillful imo. He may not win the World Cup for Pak as Starc has done for Aus but will end up an ATG bowler in 3 formats.

Congratulations well deserved.

Surely he must be on of the youngest to ever get this award?

India has never produced a bowler like SSA and prob never will.

No, they should reward him because a drama queen (on this board) nobody always acts as if any achievement from a Pak player (supposedly his own country as well, just supposedly) never merits any kudos or accolades.

Based on his logic re: SF fail against Aussies, the way Root folded against Australia in the last 3-4 tests, he did't deserve it either.

Despite all the bakwaas by an attention seeker in this thread (which is hillarious since not a single Indian has demeaned Shaheen's acievements or this award), who cares what anyone thinks, ICC gave the award to Shaheen because he deserved it more than anyone, period.

The award ' ICC Player of the Year' is not for Tests only, and right there where Root lost, he only performed well in Tests while Shaheen was brilliant/great in all formats. Plus in this day and age, it is harder for a fast bowler to display such consistency across all formats while dealing with Covid bubbles, travelling all across the globe, and playing on various types of surfaces!

First, can you tell us why an Indian cricket fan is so bothered to post in a thread related to a Pakistani player.

Didn't saw you much in the KL Rahul, Iyer, Thakur, Ashwin, Kohli, Bhuvi threads?

Congratulations to S.S.Afridi! He is currently one of the best pace bowlers and he deserves it.

LOL single handedly? He had a dropped catch I guess Hasan Ali is also Shaheeni Afridi. Also the match was in Australia hands even before the over started joke.
