Then there was this girl who would call often. This was in the '90s, when cellphones were a new thing and very expensive. So this girl started calling, totally out of the blue, and I started blowing a lot of money listening to her on the phone, giving her all the time she wanted because her voice was amazing. She sounded beautiful.
Initially, it was she who would call. Soon, I was the one who started calling her up. Remember, I wasn't married or anything at the time. So finally, I asked her to meet me. She agreed. We decided to meet on Eid in Karachi. I couldn't wait! So when Eid came, I invited her to come over and see me, as my parents would be home. It was like an arranged date!
Finally, on Eid, I couldn't keep my wits about me. The doorbell rang. I went to answer it and opened the door. There stood a young man, no more than fifteen or sixteen years old, holding a bouquet of roses. I was a little confused. So I asked him who he was. I received the shock of my life when he said he was the same 'girl' I had been talking to all these months and whom I was supposed to meet on Eid.
God! I was so embarrassed! I had said a lot of personal things to her — him — or whatever. I was also furious because I had been duped in matters of the heart! So I finally gathered the wits to ask him why he had pretended to be a woman and he said that hed heard that I only talk to girls on the phone and not men! I was so embarrassed! I didn't know whether to give him a whipping or invite him in for a cup of tea.
I did the latter and made small talk, not being able to maintain eye contact with this young lad. Eventually, I warmed up to him as I came up with another bright idea: I would deploy him for the same trick he had played on me — with my friends.
So I started using him to play pranks on my pals. He duped quite a few of them, just like he had duped me. God, he had a gorgeous voice. Very versatile! He could even sing in the voice of a woman. He would invite my pals over for a date and stand them up. He had quite a wicked sense of humour. Will you believe it, he even convinced a pal of mine — a famous bowler I won't name — over the phone to marry him?
