Pakistan spies spilling out from the woodwork in India after the Pahalgam crisis

Travel influencer or spy? India arrests YouTuber over 'suspicious' trips to Pakistan

A popular Indian travel vlogger has been arrested on suspicion of passing information to an operative of Pakistan's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Jyoti Malhotra, a 33-year-old travel influencer from the northern Indian state of Haryana, allegedly travelled to Pakistan multiple times, most recently in March 2025.

Police claim she was in contact with a Pakistan High Commission official who was expelled from India earlier this month.

Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank, Kumar Sawan, confirmed to the ABC that the man, identified as Ehsan-ur-Rahim, is known to Indian intelligence agencies.

The diplomat was expelled for "activities not in keeping with his official status".

Ms Malhotra first met Mr Rahim in 2023 when she visited the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi to obtain a visa, police say.

Investigators allege the pair exchanged phone numbers and remained in contact.

Mr Rahim is said to have helped arrange her travel and accommodation in Pakistan and introduced her to a network that included Pakistani and Italian security officials.

It's alleged she continued engaging with them via WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Telegram.

Authorities are scouring her devices and financial records, but Superintendent Sawan conceded no concrete evidence of espionage has yet been found.

'My daughter is totally innocent'

Her father, Harish Malhotra, has denied the allegations, insisting his daughter had travelled legally and done nothing wrong.

"My daughter is totally innocent," he told the ABC from their home in Hisar.

"This is a mistake and she'll be freed, mark my words."

In a formal statement, police alleged Ms Malhotra "has committed a crime by endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India".

She is accused of "carrying out suspicious activities and exchanging Indian intelligence information with a citizen of enemy country Pakistan, who has been declared persona-non-grata by the government of India on charges of espionage".

With 377,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 133,000 followers on Instagram, Ms Malhotra built a following by documenting her travels across countries including India, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, the UAE and Indonesia.

Her most popular content features her visits to Pakistan, where she filmed Hindu and Sikh temples, bustling bazaars, and daily life as an Indian woman abroad, some of those videos have drawn millions of views.

Her Instagram account has since been taken down.

Police probe Jyoti's income

Police have raised questions about how Ms Malhotra funded her frequent international travel, given her modest background.

Ms Malhotra, who does not appear to have income outside YouTube, lives with her father and uncle.

Her father told the ABC the family survives on a small monthly pension of around $270 provided to his disabled brother.

"We are analysing all her financial transactions … her travel details defy her known source of income," Superintendent Sawan said.

He alleged Ms Malhotra was being groomed as an asset, and claimed other Indian influencers are also suspected of alleged links with Pakistani intelligence operatives.

"Young people fall in such traps chasing views and likes, and they don't understand what the national and international ramifications are," Superintendent Sawan said during a press conference.

"Modern warfare isn't just at the border — it also includes meeting with influencers and pushing their narrative and distorting their image through this soft power."

Ms Malhotra is currently in remand and is being investigated under several charges including for breaching the Official Secrets Act.

Her hometown of Hisar is considered a strategic military hub.

While police admit she had no access to military or classified material, Superintendent Sawan said: "In the current context you cannot share information with your enemy."

Indian police crack down after skirmishes

So far, Ms Malhotra has cooperated with investigators, a police spokesperson told the ABC.

Police say she remained in contact with Mr Rahim between 2023 and 2025, including during "Operation Sindoor," India's cross-border strikes targeting what it called "terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan.

That operation followed the April 22 massacre of 26 civilians, mostly Hindus, in Indian-controlled Kashmir, an attack India blamed on Pakistan-based militants. Pakistan denies any involvement.

After four days of deadly clashes, a ceasefire was announced on May 10, brokered by US President Donald Trump.

Ms Malhotra's arrest comes amid a wider crackdown.

Following a deadly militant attack, Pakistan and India have hit each other with a range of tough measures including cancelling visas, which has left families separated and wondering when they will be able to reunite.

At least 14 people have been detained across India in recent weeks on suspicion of spying or leaking sensitive information to Pakistan.

Authorities say surveillance efforts were intensified after the Kashmir attack, amid fears of deeper infiltration.

Earlier this week, a second Pakistani official was asked to leave India within 24 hours for "indulging in activities not consistent with his official status".

The mission's most senior ranking diplomat was also asked to ensure that none of his staff "misuse their privileges and status in any manner".

The Pakistan High Commission is yet to respond to ABC enquiries about both matters.

Such a disgusting sick society India is becoming, just another doing of the Balkan route for India. Those miserable bhakt bunch really can't stand a sight of Pakistan or hear anything positive about Pakistan 😂

the moment it's a Muslim and/or Pakistani, they lose their sleep over it. Those clowns even came up with the idiotic terms like "love jihad"😂

Most of the bloggers who visit Pakistan get a real wake up call because Indian government and media has spun some crazy lies about Pakistan.

Even on this forum many Indians who burn cows dropping for fuel talk about Pakistanis economy.

When they see many areas of Pakistan on YouTube they are very surprised.

It won't be long till all of these bloggers are banned under Modi government media ban.

How did a YouTuber gain access to sensitive information about India, and what exactly was disclosed?

Unfortunately, this seems to be drama, she's being used as a scapegoat for the failures of Indian intelligence and security.

There is no freedom of speech in both countries. Mainstream Indian media going ofter Youtbers, and other people with opposing opinions. Same thing happening in Pakistan. Seems like both countries are cooperating on many matters and normal people like us attacking eachother lol.
Two evil regimes hurting their own citizens to stay in power

India hit 9 Pak terror sites.

India hit several Pak air bases. Strikes were limited, but damage visible.

India destroyed Pak air defences and assets.

Pak could not stop or avenge.

Pak called India and sued for peace.

Therefore, Pakistan won the war. Congratulations 👏 👏

I dont blame jyoti tbh. She probably saw a cleaner, more beautiful country like all other vloggers that visit both, prolly fell in love with the place and seeing a pakistani man after living amongst bhakts, no wonder she fell in love. Sad to label her a traitor tho. I dont think she was.

Have the officials explained what these so called 'anti-India' activities are ?
She told them about the best South Indian restaurant in North India that serves Masala Dosa, and the best restaurant in South India where you can find Chole Bhature and Amritsari Kulcha. :inti

All these andhbhakts and godi media followers believe that Pakistan is a poor country where everyone is queuing up for free atta, while in India, according to Modi, over 80 crore people receive free ration from the government. :rabada2

Even today, despite having access to YouTube and travel vlogs that show a more nuanced picture of Pakistan, they refuse to broaden their perspective and blindly consume whatever the godi media feeds them. :facepalm :inti

That’s just your delusion mate. Firstly she was invited at behest of Pak embassy so obviously they are not going to show her the inbred rat people (heard lot of inbreeding in Pak and overseas Pak diaspora) or crime areas of Karachi which is supposedly one of the most dangerous cities in the world
.

Maybe Rawalpindi cantonement area and few posh areas of Lahore are clean, we have cantonment areas in every small town of India. I have seen pics and videos of Lahore, it looks like an average B or C center in India.

The average of delusion of Pakistanis amuses me. You do realize that we have corporate parks and nightlife areas which most overseas Pakistanis probably don’t even know in their own country lol as they seem more backward and away from mainstream society.

Oh by the way the toilets joke has run its course. There are 50-60 M Pakistanis without access to toilets where as India has been constantly fixing that issue even in rural areas.

I think deep down they know because they are obsessed with pakistan so they must watch travelogues of the country.
Indian celebrities walking out of their mumbai apartments look like someone stepped out of a trash low tier city. India is filthy.

Just like Pakistan, India also has many beautiful places to visit, but people mostly focus on cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. I haven't been to Bangalore, but I found Delhi and Mumbai to be underwhelming. There is a noticeable lack of civic sense in these cities. Chandigarh, on the other hand, is quite nice. :inti

Started what? You guys have illegally denied the people of Kashmir the right to chose, you have killed 1000s and raped their women( Your own General admitted this). Just remind me again what terrorism you are on about.
The problem with you guys is not the terrorism but the desperation for revenge for a 1000 years of humiliation and this latest humiliation will just add to the frustration. Don't forget that the Junta has been fully backed by Modi and co.

Local.Dada comes up with some of the strangest takes. LOL. :inti

@Local.Dada’s reply to India’s stupidity is always the same, some Muslims are poor, IK is in jail.
