PML-N leaders, in meetings headed by ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, on Saturday decided to rally behind Nawaz's younger brother, Shahbaz Sharif, as his eventual successor.

Additionally, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who was till Friday the petroleum minister, was tapped to take over as interim prime minister till the time Shahbaz is elected to parliament, and then to the prime minister's office.

Shahbaz's ascension to the prime minister's office is considered to be a foregone conclusion, as the PML-N continues to hold a hefty majority in parliament and can independently vote him into office. He will also likely seek election to the National Assembly from Nawaz Sharif's vacated seat, which is a PML-N stronghold.

As part of the agreed-on course of action, Shahbaz will also have to forego his seat in the Punjab Assembly and his successor will need to be chosen. Sources claim that Punjab Excise and Taxation Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman is likely to replace Shahbaz as the chief minister Punjab.

A formal announcement has yet to be made.

[REPORTS] Shahid Khaqan Abbasi finalised as interim prime minister

ISLAMABAD: Ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has decided the name of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the interim prime minister of Pakistan, ARY News reported.

He will serve for 45 days before chief minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif makes his way to the National Assembly and eventually gets elected as prime minister.

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday held two consultative meetings to tap his younger brother as his eventual successor. The Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) also deliberated on the political and legal options to finalise a replacement after he was disqualified in the Panama Papers case by the Supreme Court.

Former Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and former Ehtesab Commission chairman Saif-ur-Rehman also attended the party’s consultative meeting along with Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Rana Tanveer and Abdul Qadir Baloch. Another consultative session is being held with the party’s core parliamentary committee.

Nawaz Sharif has taken his allies into confidence over the decision and called Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai and National Party chief Mir Hasil Bizejo.

Shahbaz Sharif will resign from his seat in the Punjab Assembly and as chief minister of the province. He will be elected on Nawaz’s constituency in NA-120 Lahore, a stronghold of PML-N, and eventually be elected as the next prime minister.

Punjab Excise and Taxation Rehman Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah being tipped as likely replacement of incumbent chief minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Abbasi served as the minister for petroleum and natural resources in the cabinet of Nawaz Sharif. He is considered a loyalist and was even arrested when Nawaz Sharif’s government was overthrown in 1999 by a military coup.

He was first elected in 1988 after the death of his father. He lost the 2002 elections to a Pakistan People’s Party candidate. He also had a short stint as minister in the cabinet of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani.

Ousted Pakistani PM nominates brother to take over after interim leader

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday nominated his brother Shahbaz to eventually take over as leader of the country and lashed out at political rivals and the Supreme Court ruling that disqualified him from office.

Sharif also put forward a staunch ally from his ruling party, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, as an interim prime minister while his brother contests a by-election for parliament to become eligible to take the reins.

For now, the nuclear-armed South Asian country is without a leader until parliament convenes to elect a new premier.

Dynastic politics have a long history in Pakistan, where in the past the military has staged multiple coups and no prime minister has completed a full term since independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

Sharif, whose party won a majority in parliament in 2013, said he was dumbfounded by Friday's Supreme Court ruling to disqualify him from office over unreported income from a company owned by his son in Dubai.

The court also ordered a criminal investigation into him and his family.

Sharif has said the salary paid to him was nominal and he never received the funds. He described the court case as a political vendetta by opposition leader Imran Khan and its verdict as judicial overreach.

"My conscience is clear," he said in his first public comments since resigning on Friday after the court ruling declared him unfit for office.

He also stressed that the court did not prove any corruption or siphoning off public money after months of investigation stemming from the revelation in last year's "Panama Papers" leaks that his children were linked to offshore companies.

Still, Sharif said he would no longer seek public office and urged supporters to back his brother - now chief minister of Punjab province - as long-term successor.

"I have quit my office, so someone has to take it, and after a lot of consultations ... Shahbaz Sharif is nominated," Sharif said in a speech to members of his ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

Sharif nominated ally Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who was the petroleum minister in his last cabinet, as an interim prime minister for a period of less than two months.

Sharif's dismissal has sparked uncertainty at a time when Pakistan was enjoying a rare period of relative stability, with militant attacks slowly declining and economic growth hitting its highest pace in a decade.

PML-N has a strong majority in parliament so should have no problem appointing its choice as the new prime minister.

Sharif said he would continue fighting for Pakistan's constitution, but did not mention any role of Pakistan's powerful military in his dismissal.

A day earlier a senior Sharif ally hinted that elements of the military were involved.

"We know very well what the crime of Nawaz Sharif and the Muslim League is. What do we ask for? We ask for civilian supremacy in Pakistan," Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq told a news briefing on Friday.

The army has not commented on Sharif's removal, or on allegations they were involved. The army has dismissed claims in the past that they were behind the Supreme Court's push against Sharif.

I will keep my expectations low because lahoris always surprise me sometime in a positive way but mostly negative and remember they will use all the machinery to win this seat. Losing this seat will be a huge upset for PMLN. Sarwar and Aleem Khan both will have to start the work at ground from right now for Dr Yasim to give a tough fight to SS.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the former petroleum minister, has been elected as the country’s new prime minister.

He secured 221 votes against Pakistan Peoples’ party’s Naveed Qamar’s 47 and Sheikh Rashid’s 33. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sahibzada Tariqullah managed to secure only four votes.

“I am grateful to the members, the masses, and Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister of the masses,” Abbasi said after being elected. “I am even thankful to Imran Khan despite his party’s mudslinging.”
The Supreme Court verdict, he added, has failed to create rifts within the party. “There is no charge of corruption on Nawaz Sharif,” he said. “He was punished for the development of this country, adding electricity to the national grid, among other monumental steps.”

His election came three days after former premier Nawaz Sharif was disqualified and made ineligible to hold public office by the Supreme Court for hiding assets in his nomination papers for the 2013 general elections.

Qamar was contesting from the Pakistan People’s Party, Awami Muslim League leader Rashid was the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s candidate, also backed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, following a meeting with the PML-N leadership, had pulled out its candidate, Kishwar Zehra, and announced that it would support Abbasi.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, being an ally of the ruling party, was supporting the PML-N candidate, whereas the Awami National Party abstained from the election process on account of the opposition’s lack of consensus.

Essa Noori, the lone MNA from Balochistan National Party-Mengal, also did not cast his vote.

Abbasi will remain the PM until Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif runs for NA-120, Lahore, the seat left vacant after Nawaz’s disqualification, and then take over as the new ‘permanent’ premier until the 2018 polls.

Abbasi’s entry into politics was accidental. The 58-year old politician hailing from Murree’s Abbasi family was destined to become a businessman to look after the family’s business interests. It was only after Shahid’s father Khaqan Abbasi, who was a federal minister in General Ziaul Haq’s cabinet, died in April 1988 in the infamous

He contested elections from NA-50 Murree and became an MNA in 1988 after his father’s demise. He then joined Islami Jamhori Ittehad (IJI). Abbasi again won from the platform of IJI in 1990. In 1993, when Pakistan Muslim League emerged under Sharif’s leadership (which later became PML-Nawaz) Abbasi won from PML’s forum. He has won from the NA seat six times. (1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2008, 2013) However, he lost to PPP’s Murtaza Satti in the 2002 general elections. Abbasi is a graduate of University of California and holds a master’s degree from George Washington University.

Prior to being nominated for interim PM by the PML-N leadership, Abbasi was petroleum minister. He is also a businessman who is a co-owner of private airline Airblue. Abbasi remained Chairman PIA during Nawaz’s previous federal government in 1997. He is regarded as an aviation expert. His stint as petroleum minister was marred by corruption allegations related to irregular award of LNG contracts.

Well the system is slowly but surely cleaning itself up. The SC brutalising Nawaz means nobody else is safe, and one by one hopefully LNG Abbasi and then Shahbaz Sharif etc will bite the bullet.

There are many great and honest Pakistanis but hardly any of them are in politics. IK is no longer naive, he's done the same thing anyone at the top has had to do, negotiate with and accept corrupt MNAs. He's mobilised the support from some of the corrupt in the system to come into a position of power. It's realpolitik. Idealism alone doesn't work in Pakistan.

Patronage and Kinship politics is rife in Pakistan and there is no way an honest man can move forward without some of the corrupt within that system backing him. He's taking them one at a time. First, the Sharif dynasty, then the Bhutto and his own party thereafter. That's what I'd do if I were in his position. Naivety would mean he goes alone, fails and retires to England. IK is really fighting this out and with this Ayesha Gulalai, his enemies have found a new low.

I've come to realise this man is something special. His small flaws are nothing compared to what he is on the cusp of achieving.
