DUBAI: Pakistan’s left-arm fast-bowler Mohammad Irfan was suspended from Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Saturday over corruption allegations.

Irfan is the third player to be suspended from the league in the past 24 hours over corruption allegations. On Friday night, Irfan’s Islamabad United teammates Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were suspended after they were found to be involved in spot-fixing.

The left-armer has been sent back to Pakistan and his personal belongings, including his mobile phone, have been seized by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials.

The Express Tribune has learnt that six players in total are involved in the scandal. However, only three have been identified as yet. Players from other franchises such as Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators are also being investigated by the management. “Three to four more players from Qalandars and Gladiators are also under the radar and their names will be confirmed once investigation is complete,” a source privy to the development said.

Following the suspensions, PSL chairman Najam Sethi in a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that the investigation is a clear example of the board’s commitment to drive corruption out of the sport. “It would not be appropriate to comment on the specifics of this case,” said Sethi. “However, this investigation is a clear demonstration of our determination to drive corruption out of our sport.”

“We will not tolerate any form of corrupt activity and as this investigation proceeds we will not hesitate to take further decisive action as appropriate. The investigation of the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is backed by the ICC ACU, who has been effective in dealing with this case to date and we will continue to work in the closest collaboration as the investigation proceeds.”

Pakistan is not like other boards. After Ijazz Butt fiasco, PCB has lost the right to conduct the investigation silently. On the contrary, this was exactly the type of step PCB should have taken to send out a loud and clear message that PCB won't be a silent spectator and will not tolerate corruption at all.

As a fan you would not want to not know whose behind corruption of your countries only league? I actually support what PCB is doing right now. By letting out these names its telling the world that it will not tolerate corruption by the players. Sure it may embarrass our country but that was bound to happen when these players stepped in the wrong foot to earn extra cash.
