For those who are questioning Shaan Masood's inclusion in the Test squad I'd say you should applaud Mickey for his persistence on FITNESS.

I agree Shan Masood has not scored heavily in the last few games he has played.
Since THAT innings of 125 vs SL in Pallekele, his scores read:

2, 1, 54, 1, 7, 24, 39, 1, 9 and 21. (all matches v Eng and WI in Eng, UAE and WI)

That is:
159 Runs in 10 innings @ an avg. of 15.9

However, I can see why he is getting chances repeatedly...it is because he is
- a hardworker (according to the Coach & Management)
- has great work ethic (according to the Coach & Management)
- the fittest guy in PCT (according to the Coach & Management + Fitness Test results)

Btw, for those interested in Fitness - you should definately check out his workout videos that he posts on Instagram. Those are some really intense workouts - with proper form.....
(Quite the opposite of the workout videos that Umar Akmal / Shahzad post)

His clean press and squats are Kohli level i'd say. :shh

I really hope he will turn out to be a good batsman as he's hardworking!

Shan Masood is definitely not the best nor the most talented opener we have...but he is extremely dedicated and passionate about his Cricket and fitness. If he continues to work hard, he will overcome his limitations and become a good opener for Pakistan at the test level.

Can't prioritize fitness for someone who sucks at his primary job. Masood has already achieved his potential, he isnt going to get any better.

Look, I don't have a problem with his work ethic. I don't have a problem with his fitness either. I have a problem with his playing ability. Being a fringe national player is honestly the best he can do. If he had Umar Akmal's potential, he'd be up there with Kohli/Root/Smith as one of the best batsmen in the world. But he doesn't.
Besides, the message has been sent by this point and it's been positively received. Everyone in the side is steadily getting fitter and some are already at top notch fitness...and they have far more ability than Shan Masood. Why do you need to select him to send the message when Azhar and Babar and even Sarfraz to some extent are already doing the job?

Should just get jacked and become a professional bodybuilder.

I'd rather accommodate primadonnas like Akmal and Shehzad in the team on the off chance that they could succeed in 1 innings out of 5. This guy is a talentless hack only in the team because of his father's influence with the board. It's embarrassing.

Don't get the OP.

If someone isn't good enough a cricketer, how does fitness matter?

The solidity Pakistan got when Sami Aslam was selected in the team in England after Shan Masood was let go was unreal.

Fitness is a prerequisite for selection, but OP needs reminding that players also need to have an ounce of ability.

No doubt he is very fit and a hard worker but he just doesn't get runs. Has an awful technique unfortunately. A player should be fit to be in the team which Masood obviously is but if he isn't good at his primary job which is a batsman, he shouldn't be in the team. But one thing about Masood is that I know he will try his best to improve. It seems he doesn't have an ego so will accept his flaws and work on them

Other than his batting, the rest of him is pretty likeable.

Fawad Alam had topped the fitness test that was conducted by army last year?

Shan was second.

Nonetheless, if he has been that "fit" and "hardworking", why cant he buy runs in domestic circles? Has been terrible in domestics every season he's played

Agree with op and also I'm sure his batting is also improving. He is a hard worker and I expect he will get better. He hasn't had nearly as many chances as shehzad yet ppl have no problem with shehzad.

I don't doubt his fitness, he clearly dedicates his time to it but his batting is not Test standard.

He's a walking wicket with his technique as Jimmy Anderson has shown.

He's fit, but his technique is so appalling that he will only ever score runs against no hopers like Sri Lanka or Nepal or Eritrea.

You can't even coach improvement into that technique. The feet, the hands and the eyes are all miles out of position.

He needs Grant Flower and Mickey Arthur to tell him the truth: he's a lost cause as a batsman and should get Daddy to make him the Team Travel Coordinator or Press Manager.

Commando should just ditch cricket and become a track and field specialist. Would have more success at the latter without any doubt tbh.

Wow i didnt realize speaking queens english and being super fit were main criteria for team selection. The fact hes not improved his technic and looks like a walking wicket seems to be lost on head selector and coach

He can always be an assistant trainer to Grant Luden

Being fit doesn't teach you how to bat, which is why unless you're a bowler, I think fitness is quite overrated in cricket.

It teaches you how to bowl?

I think he means fitness is more important for bowlers. Bowlers are more injury prone which is why pace bowlers careers end ata relatively young age compared to batsman. They have a lot more stress on their bodies having to run up and repeat the same action over and over again

not sure

Clowns like Shehzad and Akmal destroy the team environment bringing performance for whole team down

Atleast a guy like Masood will only perform poorly himself

Sorry but dads dream will bring down the performance of a whole generation of players who have no connections. Being fat is less worse than being dads dream

I don't think it really matters much for spinners but for fast bowlers? You absolutely need fitness so you can stay healthy and have the stamina to bowl well for 5+ overs and in multiple spells.

That's not what I asked.

Great he can be a model for the team uniform

It's very curious that every excuse in the book is made for players who are in the team for obvious non cricket reasons.

His first-class stats are bang average, his international performances have been embarrassing.

I hate such players, they epitomise all thats wrong with our society.

I have said it before and ill say it again Shan needs to take Junaid Zia as an example of what to do.
