Shane Bond will get another chance to plot the downfall of Australia's batsmen - but this time wearing England cricket team kit.

One of New Zealand's best fast bowlers has been confirmed as England's fast bowling consultant for the first two tests of the Ashes series in Australia, starting in November.

"In addition to current full-time members of staff, former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has been appointed fast bowling consultant and will be part of the England management team up to the end of second test in Australia," the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a release.

He'll be in the England dressing room for the series opener in Brisbane starting on November 23, and the second test in Adelaide, a day-nighter with a pink ball starting on December 2.

Bond won't be with England for the entire five-test series as he is already contracted to Brisbane Heat, coached by his former team-mate Daniel Vettori, for the Twenty20 Big Bash starting on December 19.

Bond is currently head coach of New Zealand A in India, but his contract runs till the end of the tour in mid-October and he is free to join England for their tour which starts in Perth on November 4.

The announcement was one of cricket's worst-kept secrets as Bond was reportedly head coach Trevor Bayliss' top target after the incumbent Ottis Gibson departed to take the reins of South Africa.

Bond, 42, played his last international in 2010 and earned respect as Black Caps bowling coach till the end of the 2015 World Cup. He then snared Twenty20 bowling jobs with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and the Heat in Australia.

He was tight-lipped about potentially joining England but told Stuff recently of his coaching ambitions.

"I've got my sights on a head coaching role, but it's how it all lines up with everything else in your life. I've got great opportunities with Brisbane and the IPL [with this year's champions the Mumbai Indians] and I really enjoy them. My kids are at an age where I want to be around and not miss too much. Every opportunity you've got to look at and weigh up what's best for the important people around you," Bond said.

"I'd love to be involved with the IPL [as a head coach]. I love the New Zealand cricket team and would like to have another period of involvement, I'm just not quite sure when that's going to be."

Bond will work with England new ball duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad, bringing his recognised strengths of detailed bowling plans to Australia's batsmen and extracting the best from the Kookaburra ball.

In 17 one-day internationals against Australia, Bond took 44 wickets at 15.79 including 6-23 at the 2003 World Cup. He played just two tests against the Aussies on his debut tour in 2001, taking three wickets at 96.
