This week, popular Turkish star Esra Bilgic had the internet reeling after she posted a picture of Islamia College, Peshawar, on her Instagram story. The Dirilis: Ertugrul star, who rose to fame over her portrayal of Halime Sultan on the show, is adored by fans worldwide. She captioned the image, 'The city of flowers.”

A couple of months ago, PSL’s Javed Afridi – who owns Peshawar Zalmi – had hinted that the actor might become the team's next brand ambassador for the upcoming tournament. Taking to the micro-blogging website, he had written, "What if we offer (the role of brand ambassadorship) to Halime Sultan as well?" After Bilgic’s recent Instagram story, fans speculate that she has finally come to Pakistan.

However, some have their reservations. The Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, for instance, said, "I find this hilarious! A Turkish actress whose country doesn’t even play the sport will now be a mascot for cricket?” She added, “What happened to Pakistani actresses by the way? Did they all disappear that we have to get foreign ones? Whatever is left of our industry will die if you keep paying Turkish actors for jobs Pakistani actors can do!

After this, an Instagram user called out Obaid-Chinoy accusing her of giving work to foreign actors herself. To this, the Emmy-winner responded, “You don’t know anything about the industry. How can you say it’s good for Pakistan? We have a very small industry that we have to protect,” she continued. “Once we grow, we can open up.”

She thereby asked the fan to do his research before making such tall claims. “This isn’t about close-mindedness or jealousy. This is being practical given the resources we have. Since most of you don’t care about the Pakistani film industry, let me lay it out for you. If you stop sponsoring your own actors and actresses, whatever is left of the industry will die. But trolls like you don’t care that you can take a punt at me! Good luck with that."

The show is massive in Pakistan, so from a business POV it's a great decision.

While I do find it very strange that a Turkish actress who has nothing to do with cricket, is being asked to be the brand ambassador of Zalmi, making Pakistani actresses brand ambassadors isn’t going to do anything for our garbage film industry.

She needs to stop being ignorant and realize that the state of our film industry is an issue that can only be solved from the ground up by creating a culture where young people actually have the opportunity to pursue artistic endeavours. Currently, our culture and economic state does not allow this. The fault also lies with Pakistani filmmakers who keep pumping out trash. Why should I waste my time with a completely soulless and mediocre Pakistani movie when I could be watching something good instead?

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an Oscar winner, so as she is in the industry, how come she herself has not done more for Pakistan's film actresses and the Pakistani film industry itself? What was her Oscar for? Is there someone in whatever show or film she produced that could do a better job of promoting Islambad than the radiant Halime Sultan?

I fully agree with her. Our obsession with the Turks is embarrassing.

However, I am not surprised because we are a confused nation. First, we tried to identify with the Arabs but we were rejected. Now, we try to identify with the Turks. They will, soon, reject us too!

Think we can see both sides of the argument

1. Bringing the Turkish lady into the picture is a good marketing move
2. What is her connection with cricket?
3. But then how many of these brand ambassadors actually follow cricket?

And so on.

A couple of years ago, Kareena Kapoor and other Indian actors did commercials and were brand ambassadors for Q mobile Pakistan. Were we wannabe Indians then?

Not everything is as deep as you think, this show is popular in Pakistan at this point that’s why their actors are being picked for ads and other marketing roles. A couple of years ago, it was Indian actors that were very popular hence they got the ads. It’s simply business and has nothing to do with these conspiracy theories you keep coming up with.

I thought Chinoy was supposed to a real woke leftist, why is she using typical right wing talking points of “foreigners stealing our jobs”. Seems odd.

Don't see what the problem is
Its purely for marketing and generating income and a coup for zalmi team

because they have someone who is widely popular in pakistan known as halime sultan so its very clever from zalmi owner.

My message to the Pakistani artists, don't jealous. Lift your game up and come to par.

Peshawar Zalmi is an independent business. They have the right to choose their own brand ambassador.

Since she is a lead actress of a very popular show in Pakistan it seems to be a good move.

She is right we dont care about the Pakistani film industry. And certainly not about these sanctimonious elites who could care less about Pakistani culture, yet play the "Pakistani" card when it comes to getting things.

My message to the Pakistani artists, don't jealous. Lift your game up and come to par.

They would rather complain and ban the competition, then lift their game. They are besharam people.

You need money to lift your game which with Pak economy is not possible

These actress get paid a very good salary for Pakistan. They cant lift their game as they have no talent, and are chosen for their looks and not their acting skills.

The movies of Kareena and co weren’t recommended to us by the sitting PM nor were they played on our state TV, nor were the actors treated like emperors when they came to Pakistan, nor did they meet our sitting PM and nor were their statues erected in parks. Our obsession with them is embarrassing.

Lol she sounds like a right wing nut job. "they're stealin' our jerbs" is something MAGA and EDL people love to say. Anyways Mamoon is going to have a heart attack when he find out about this lol.

You need money to lift your game which with Pak economy is not possible

Nah writing good scripts, creativity and acting skills have nothing to do with money. You guys are mistaking big commercial movies with CGI and expensive sets for the basics to have a decent film industry.

Indians hire white women to work as models, appear in advertisements, and even be lead actresses even though they cant speak the local language, and no one has a problem. Pakistan hires a Turkish actress and these liberals lose their mind.

The PM can give a recommendation to the public on a tv show that he likes. Obama recommend books, movies, tv shows. No one has a problem with that. Imran Khan does it Pakistani liberal lose their mind.

Having money helps but it isn't everything. Some shows on the BBC are low budget compared to their American counterparts but they have gritty and compelling storylines that make them watchable.

Pakistan has been through a war for the past decade, has numerous different cultures, a fascination with intelligence agencies, all of which can be fashioned into really good storylines for TV. Instead the focus seems to be on poor quality romance or love tension shows mainly.

Because that's what the audience (middle age women) like.

There is a difference. Obama did not shove the books down anybody’s throat and he did not go out of his way to make sure everybody read the books which he recommended. Imran is doing this by asking our state broadcaster to dub it and then telecast it.

Obama also did not meet the authors of the books and nor were the authors portrayed as their national heroes.

Also, IK pushed a mostly fictional tale as authentic Islamic history.

IK is not shoving it down anyone's throat. No one is being forced to watch the tv show. However its popularity show that people like it. And he can meet whoever he wants.

Pakistan has no shortage of tv channels, so even if PTV is showing it, you can watch another channel.

Shoving stuff down peoples throat is what China is doing to Uyghurs , and Hong Kong democracy activists.

Because that's what the audience (middle age women) like.

They need to try and expand the audience and overall market. If they keep relying on these middle aged women quality will continue to stagnate and the industry will continue to die.

The success of Ertugrul has shown that there is a market for alternatives.

Yes, however Pakistan does not have the ability to produce shows like that right now. Best option is to either co produce shows with other countries, or just dub foreign shows in Urdu. So at least you create jobs for voice actors.

He is shoving it down. If he wasn’t, he would not be talking about it all the time. He would be meeting Quetta’s mourners instead of Ertugrul’s cast. He would not be asking the state broadcaster to dub it and shove it down everybody’s throat.

Please, remain on topic. If you want to talk about Hong Kong and democracy, you are free to make a thread.

PM is allowed to talk about topics he likes.

He didn't meet the Quetta protestors because he did not want to be blackmailed. He said he would meet them after they buried their relatives, and he did. nothing to do with meeting turkish actors.

He would not be asking the state broadcaster to dub it and shove it down everybody’s throat.

Again Pakistan has alot of tv channels, so even if PTV showed it, the viewers can watch another channel.

Now, you are changing the goal posts. The issue is IK’s obsession with this show. Read my posts on the other thread about IK and his refusal to meet Quetta mourners. IK is the last person to talk about blackmail.

IK can meet whoever he wants, but he chose to meet Ertugrul actors and ignored his own countrymen. He is way too obsessed with the Turks.

For your information, PTV is the state broadcaster and this channel is available for almost Pakistani. No other PM has asked a foreign show be dubbed and broadcast on state broadcaster.

It's not necessary the obsession with the Turks but also the fact that after a long while there has been a quality TV show that's portrayed Islam in some sort of positive light. If you watch Western produced or Indian produced media we all know how Pakistan/Islam is portrayed.

Appointing a “celebrity” as a mascot for a cricket team is purely a marketing decision with an aim to attract the largest audience for commercial interests - that’s how marketing works all over the world.. it has nothing to do with benefiting cricket, Lollywood or Turkish TV.

The celebrity may have nothing to do with the product - but if they are popular and will attract an audience then the incentive is there for businesses to exploit that popularity in their favour, by associating them with their product.

I’m sure if Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt jointly made thenselves available to be Mascot for Lahore Qalandars , they would probably attract more fans then if Lahore born Lollywood actors Shan and Afzal Khan (Jan Rambo) offered to do the same.. despite the Hollywood actors having no connection to cricket or Lahore.

So don’t understand the grudge if it’s Engin Altan or Esra Bilgic from Turkey instead.

Sharmeen has won an Oscar, why isn't she in a position to suggest alternatives rather than moaning about foreigners taking jobs? What was the Oscar for? Didn't her Oscar winning film produce any marketable heroes or heroines?

Now I am more on topic than anyone so please don't run away from this question which I am asking for the second time now.

Why are some people not liking the increasing integration between turkey and pakistan? If pakistan has a brother, that would be turkey.

I agree. Many in Pakistan claim Turkish ancestry. Welcoming their own sister to be a brand ambassador of their favorite team and players should be seen as natural alliance.

The thing is that people in Turkey are mostly Analtolians who converted to Islam. The real Turks come from Central Asia.

Lol classical indian obsessed with Pakistani anthropology.

I am just stating facts that Pakistanis claim online. With so much Mughal, Persian and Turkish ancestry, there is nothing wrong in welcoming your sister from a different mother and land.

Hahaha y'all obsessed and salty, I guess India should invite Nazis since y'all loving claiming to be Aryans

Lol Indians and their complex will never end...

Why do like 95% of the Indians online claim to be upper caste? I mean just on this website, if i did a poll of the Indian Hindu members, how many would claim to be dalit and shudrha? Probably close to zero right?

Are most Hindus not low caste? Even the low castes claim that at one point their ancestors were high castes.

Hahaha y'all obsessed and salty, I guess India should invite Nazis since y'all loving claiming to be Aryans

I dont know about obsessed, but they really dont like it. One would think its obvious from the vastly different skin tones in the subcontinent, that its a really mixed place. I mean you can have skin tone that can pass as Southern European to sub Sahara black in people of all religions there.

I think as DNA testing expands, and Hindus find out that they also have some Central Asian blood, then and only then will they be ok with Muslims saying it as well. Until that day happens you will see these type of statements.

So she is that famous as some claimed in this forum, always thought it was an overreaction.

My assumption is its a lot to do with her looks as well.

Lol obv it’s a lot to do with her looks. That’s almost every mainstream actress

I don't think so, she's just conventionally attractive

I agree she is beautiful. However someone with Lupita Nyong'o skin color would never be selected. So Esra has the looks and skin color. And the fact she can pass as a Pakistani is a plus as well.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy helmed documentary has been nominated in two categories for the 48th Annual Daytime Emmy! SOC Films, a Karachi-based film production house, spearheaded by two-time Academy Award and four-time Emmy Award winner Obaid-Chinoy, has been nominated in two categories at the prestigious 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards for its international documentary series Fundamental. Gender Justice. No Exceptions by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in New York, stated a press release.

Produced by SOC Film’s documentary film-makers Safyah Zafar Usmani and Shahrukh Waheed with Obaid-Chinoy as the director, the five-episode international documentary series was entirely shot in Brazil, Georgia, Kenya, USA, and Pakistan. Fundamental. Gender justice. No exceptions has been nominated in the categories of Outstanding Short-Form Daytime Non-Fiction program and Outstanding Directing Team for a Single-Camera Daytime Non-Fiction Program.

“I am proud of SOC Films and the fact that it's the only production house in Pakistan that has been consistently being nominated and recognised for its work on all the major global platforms and award programs. This series is a collaboration with Global Fund for Women where we are advocating for women rights around the world and highlighting the heroes on the ground, working in grass root communities and the advances they are making in the lives of others,” said Obaid-Chinoy.

A collaboration between SOC Films and Global Fund for Women, the character-driven documentary series Fundamental follows dynamic gender justice activists from five countries who are disrupting the status quo, by agitating and organising to create safe spaces and a safer world for other women, girls, and other historically marginalised people and communities globally.

Each of the five episodes shot internationally profiles a distinct set of remarkable grassroots movements and community leaders, mobilising to initiate new futures for themselves, their societies, and the world.

These incredible stories of community leaders, who are at the front lines of fighting for gender justice, are an inspiration not only to those in their societies but also across the world, and continue to strive to create better futures for themselves and other women.

In addition to director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and producers Safyah Zafar Usmani and Shahrukh Waheed, the FUNDAMENTAL production crew also featured Directors of Photography Faizan Ali and Nadir Siddiqui, Cameraperson Khurram Victor, Editors and Colorists Husain Qaizer and Sourath Behan, Editors Mishaal Adhami and Anas Ahmed, Sound Design by Sameer Khan, Project Manager Huma Shah, Color Correction of Photography by Murtaza Ali and Line Production by Syed Ayub. The series also features Original Music by Taha Malik with Cameraperson Salome Sagaradze for Georgia and Associate Producers Maureen Wanjiku for Kenya, Nino Isakadze for Georgia and Julia Main for the USA.

The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be celebrated in two live-streamed events on July 17th and July 18th, 2021.

SOC Films and Obaid-Chinoy have previously won four Emmys: Best Documentary for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, Best Documentary and Outstanding Editing: Documentary and Long Form for Saving Face and Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary for her documentary Children of the Taliban.

Just updating this thread as the OP of the other thread (which he has started) does not engage in debate with those who call him out for what he is, but basically he is saying that Pakistanis on visiting Turkey's beaches would be so horrified at the sight of flesh they would declare jihad - on the country or the people I'm not really clear on.

This is a stupid comment, but some Pakistanis do need to grow up. The country would benefit from being more relaxed about clothing like they are in Turkey. There you can wear hijab in classes if you want to, or wear swimwear on the beach if you want.

Good to see for Chinoy

==

Pakistan-born Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to become the first woman and person of colour to direct a Star Wars film.

Studio executives on Friday announced three new Star Wars movies are in the making, with the first slated for release in 2025.

Obaid-Chinoy will direct a film set 15 years after the end of the last movie, starring British actor Daisy Ridley as she returns to the role of Rey, the heroine of the last trilogy, which wound up in 2019 to mixed reviews.

The new film will follow Rey’s efforts to revive the Jedi order.

Obaid-Chinoy, who has two Oscars for documentaries denouncing violence against women, said she was “drawn to the hero’s journey” in the Star Wars universe.

“I spent the better part of my lifetime meeting real heroes who are overcoming oppressive regimes and battling impossible odds, and I think that’s the heart of Star Wars,” she said.

Obaid-Chinoy directed last year’s Ms Marvel television series featuring a Muslim superhero.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, the studio bought by Disney in 2012, said each of the three films would cover different periods in the Star Wars narrative. And each will have a different director.

James Mangold, himself a two-time Oscar nominee, will helm another of the films after directing the latest in the Indiana Jones series, which is set for release later this year.

His film will look at the origins of the Jedi order, thousands of years before the original storyline.

And the third film will be directed by Dave Filoni, an old hand in the Stars Wars universe, having produced several television series including the wildly successful The Mandalorian, now in its third season.

Fans at the convention also got a first view of US actress Rosario Dawson in the role of Ahsoka, a female Jedi warrior who first appeared in an animated series.

The character has been such as hit with the Star Wars fanbase that she has graduated to a television series, out in August.

Don't know how good her directing skills are but good luck to her. Star Wars fans are gonna be vicious if she messes up.
