Shaun Pollock the best all-rounder ever?

I think Pollock overachieved with the bat

He has hardly ever batted among top 6. Any runs lower down the order are crucial.

I remember that Durban match where Azhar/Anwar scored centuries and Pakistan won by a narrow margin. He looked the best among South African batsman. If anything, he has underachieved I would say.

Imran, Sobers, Miller, Kallis and Botham were all better all-rounders. Pollock is probably ahead of Kapil and Hadlee.

the stats would agree with you, somehow averages over 30

yet 40 Not-outs
and strike rate of 50 lower down the order

never seemed to make an impact with the bat and had no strokes either

Underrated as a bowler no doubt. Had brilliant control don't understand why he is so underrated.

Not many fifers or ten fers and just 2 hundreds...

The quartet of 80s were better.

Kallis is SA's best All-Rounder.

However, he is a bordeline ATG bowler and an ATG all-rounder across all formats.

No specific reason to not consider him an all rounder.

Just two centuries in 109 tests, with a lot of red ink to boost his average.

He might have done better with the bat had he come in a place higher. I know his illustrious Dad and Uncle told him he should be making more of his batting.

If the discussion is whether he is eligible to be called as all rounder, then I think he is.

Two centuries only yes but milestone shouldn't be a factor for eligibility.

On batting purely, I would rate him higher than Hadlee although below Kapil and Imran.

Sounds about right, though if you take the red ink out his batting record looks very like Hadlee’s.

Pollock was a bowling all-rounder and in that sense his record is really good in Tests. Average of 32 with the bat and 23 with the ball is phenomenal. Remember SA had a brilliant batting line up in 90's and 2000's where Pollock played all of his Tests. He would hardly get a chance to score 100's. In ODIs though he was okay and did not fulfil his potential. He was technically sound and surely could have scored more runs if he had put his mind into batting. As a bowler he was brilliant. He lost his pace towards the later half of his career but again he was very hard to get away.
