ISLAMABAD: Former pacer Shoaib Akhtar fears that international cricket could be reduced to just a couple of World Cups and T20 leagues if the International Cricket Council (ICC) does not intervene.

“I can tell you one thing, if you don’t go with justice for the next two years, there will be only two World Cups and ten leagues happening. If the ICC wants to go down that route, then please do so. It is your wish, we can only talk about cricket being destroyed but can’t do anything,” he said in a YouTube interview.

According to Shoaib, the rules of the game had been changed to benefit the batsmen. “You’ve to give permission for bodyline bowling. You’ve tied the hands of fast bowlers. What type of cricket are you organising? Two new balls with a restriction on bouncers — do you want fast bowlers to go there just to be smashed all around the park?” he asked.

He said that there were hardly any fast bowlers left in the game. “There are only three fast bowlers left in the world, including Cummins who is injury prone and Jofra Archer who was bowling at 150 kph but is now bowling at 132 kph.” He said that cricket had undergone a steady decline from the glory days of the past. “Till the time you don’t go with justice, cricket will keep going down. If you want someone to score 20,000 odd runs, it is your wish. It doesn’t affect me. If you don’t make cricket better, it does not impact my era.”

“The fans of our era are still our fans. The way we played cricket will always be remembered. Whether it be the West Indies’ of 70s and 80s or Pakistan of the 90s and even after that, we have had big names. People remember those eras.” Shoaib claimed that the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup could have taken place but were sacrificed for the sake of the Indian Premier League.

“Asia Cup could have definitely happened, it would have been a great chance for India and Pakistan to play against each other. There are many reasons behind this, I don’t want to get into that. T20 World Cup could have also taken place, but I had said this earlier that they won’t let it happen.”

The former pacer asked the BCCI to play its role and save the game. “I am suggesting the BCCI to save cricket today. If they don’t save it, it’s fine, it doesn’t affect my era. My matches with Sachin Tendulkar are still remembered today.”

Shoaib also hinted at the BCCI using its power to get results in its favour, including Harbhajan Singh escaping a ban after supposedly using a racist slur against Andrew Symonds.

I agree this era has been harder for fast bowlers.

Two new bowl rule with no reverse swing, flat wickets, short boundaries, no ball eating or tampering, no Akhtar for shaking legs, really nothing.

Only if these rules were allowed, we would have been producing 3-4 ATG fast bowlers in current era and batters like Kohli and Rohit won't have been averaging 60 and 50 respectively. The game has favoured so much towards the batsmen.

Shoaib is correct and that is the direction we are heading. There will none to fewer bilateral ODIs/T20Is in the future.

Bilaterals will only conists of test matches.

White ball international cricket will only be tournaments like WCs, Asia cups, high profile Tri series like Natwest or VB series of the past etc.

Basically these JAMODIs and T20Is will go extinct.

Boards will generate revenue via league cricket round the year, invest that money to strengthen domestic cricket to have players ready for test matches/world cups etc.

Unfortunately, cricket is dying and BCCI (with collaboration of big 3) are killing it.

Shoaib got a point. They are destroying very essence of cricket per un pugno di dollari.

The two new balls rule is the worst thing to happen to cricket. It killed reverse swing and many orthodox spinners in the ODI format making the game boring or one sided. It also destroyed careers of the likes of Gul and other old ball specialists.

i dont mind if we only have bilateral tests, bilateral loi are ok for prep for big tournaments, otherwise they are a waste of time and needlessly increase player workloads, esp fast bowlers.

If what you say becomes reality, how will the non Big3 boards make money? Right now besides the handout from the ICC the only cricket activity that makes these boards $$$ are ODI's and T20I's.

This enables these boards to host the two and one test "series" which lose money. You take out two of the three money making avenues, the boards are going to start gasping for $$.

i wont mind i there's just extended test tours and T20 and ODI series gaining steam near WCs

im only stating my preference, i might watch a t20i for entertainment but odis seem pointless to me, and given professional cricket is heading towards a league structure top players will not want to play 20 or 25 odis a year.

look if there is a demand for odis thats fine, and the boards will continue to earn money, i dont want them to stop if its viable, but im saying if its not, like shoaib is saying, then i wouldnt miss the format.

ICC is being run by the financial impact of the richer Boards.

Those with strong finances will continue to sway ICC's decisions.

Well, Akhtar is not too far off. Tests are already down, with non Big3's hardly playing anything more than three tests. Even those three are being cut to two and one test frequently.

Also I see the BCCI starting something new, getting away from a home test series against Aus. Now with the IPL I am sure the test series against Eng. that was scheduled this year is not happening. Not sure when/if this will be rescheduled. That's nine tests at home for the BCCI that are not played. Sign of things to come?

Cricket is a dying sport. We should be happy that T20 has rejuvenate the game and passion.

Earlier bilateral series took fans for granted, and thus, its better to have full flashed international competitions

Lol cricket is trying too hard to copy football model these days but will fail miserably. From where will cricket get its international stars if there is no bilateral cricket? World Cup and other ICC tournaments won't happen that frequently? How will players gain experience?

What pyjama leagues like IPL does is they pick established international star players from other countries. Who will scout talent in other countries for them? Football leagues run through whole year. A footballer also don't play for two different leagues/teams lol. This is where cricket leagues become a circus. There is no loyalty and fan base. It's just that since we are pretty poor in football we are trying hard to make that up in all these leagues. :inti

Honestly speaking bilateral LOIs lost their value long ago already.

Test cricket will never die.

But I am alright if LOI International cricket is only limited to tournaments like it is in Football.

We can still have ICC approved friendlies.

Bilateral LOIs in modern era are nothing but a spring board to showcase talent and get selected in one of the lucrative leagues. This is most predominant in West Indies for now but will be catching up in other teams soon. Players like Bravo, Narine, Pollard, Russell etc. most of them used international success to get a league contract and then deserted national team for JAMODIs. Likes of Hetmeyer etc. is following the same trend.

Modern players mindset is -

1) Make a name for himself in domestic cricket to get picked in national team.

2) Display skills in national team to get a lucrative league cricket contract.

3) Play only WCs, high profile LOI series from there on and rest in JAMODIs and T20Is.

We regularly see teams rest their main players in JAMLOIs to cut workload. This concept of resting players to manage workload was never there in pre IPL era. Someone like Tendulkar would never miss an ODI series until 1999 when his back gave away. Then compare it with Virat Kohli of 2018 who sat out in most LOI series (incl Asia cup) to manage workload and only played test matches/crucial ODIs.

This term 'managing workload' is a polite way of saying we are disinterested in JAMODIs...dont bother us.

In future, bilateral ODIs and T20Is will only feature players who are not good enough to get a contract in league cricket.

I think leagues need to play round the year to kill meaningless bilateral matches.

ODI outside WC should only be played for qualification which every nation should be required to play. Same for T20I.

WTC is fine.

Missing those Tri-series, 4 team and 5 team tournaments, Sharjah cups, Natwest series, Carlton & United series, Toronto Ind vs pak bilaterals etc... All had great success , if played again would still have a lot of success.. IPL has shelved the flavours of ODIs

Bilateral cricket is worthless. Players are just playing for their averages. What's the point of such selfish and senseless matches? Multi-teams tournaments is the norm and only way forward whether it is league or cup.

As expected, the fans from the land of Vinay Kumar and Munaf Patel support the reduction in bilateral cricket.

Get rid of bilateral T20 games. Everything else should remain the same.

I agree, T20I seems out of place. Not a big fan. But then the non Big3 boards make money off the T20I's. It's a key component of their revenue stream. So I can understand if they want to continue.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have tests which has become dated and is a money pit for almost all boards. Besides the $$ side there is just no viewership on TV or at the ground outside Eng & Aus. How do you sustain this? Not possible for the non Big3 boards.

Well in the end the market forces should and will determine what stays and what goes. That is the fair way.
