Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has responded to Virender Sehwag’s recent comments about him. The former India batsman recently raised a number of eyebrows by saying that Akhtar used to ‘chuck’. Not only that, Sehwag also stated that the express pacer knew “he used to jerk his elbow”. Akhtar’s action was a point of discussion throughout his career and he also faced actions from the ICC for the same. In 1999, Akhtar was banned for ‘throwing’ for a month and had to remodel his action.
That was not the end to his miseries though. A couple of years later in 2001, he was banned for illegal bowling action for a second time. Akhtar, however, managed to leave all the hurdles behind and went on to play for Pakistan till 2011. Akhtar represented Pakistan in 46 Tests, 163 ODIs and 15 T20Is, taking more than 400 wickets across formats. He also holds the record for bowling the fastest-ever deliver in cricket. Coming to Sehwag’s recent comments, the batting legend once again pointed fingers at Akhtar’s bowling action.

“Shoaib knows he used to jerk his elbow; he knew he was chucking too. Why would the ICC (International Cricket Council) ban him otherwise? Brett Lee’s hand came down straight, so it was easy to pick the ball. But with Shoaib (Akhtar), you could never guess where the hand and the ball will come from,” Sehwag said while speaking on Sports18’s Home of Heroes.
Shoaib Akhtar’s response:
Few days after Sehwag’s statement, Shoaib Akhtar was asked about the same and the Pakistan great responded to it. Speaking to Sportskeeda, Akhtar started by giving a piece of advice to Sehwag. Akhtar also made a sarcastic comment, saying that Sehwag might know more than the ICC. He, however, said that Sehwag was entitled to his opinion. The legendary pacer was later asked about Sehwag as a batsman and he did not hesitate in showering praise at the India legend.
“I would request him not to talk about these things. If Sehwag knows more than the ICC or the laws of ICC, then its fine I accept his opinion. That is his opinion and I can’t say much about that, said Shoaib Akhtar.
“My statement for Sehwag would be a bit different than his statement for me. I believe that Virender Sehwag is one of the greatest players. Whenever he played for India, I believed he was a match-winner and a good team man. He is one of the greatest openers. I am at a stage and age where I give my comments very carefully. I have not seen his interview. I don’t know whether he was joking or was being serious. He is a very, very close friend of mine. He gives comments like these but I don’t feel bad for it. I wish him best of luck,” he added.
