Shoaib Malik - Looking like a man who is ready to retire

Averages like below 10 In England after 20 yrs, how the management like Mickey Arthur and Sarfraz thought it would be a good idea to pick him against Aus on a bouncy pitch I will never know.

Add to that his fielding cost 20 runs easily.

Pls retire , like U did in tests.
 
Pakistan is playing Malik as a spinner as well. But to win a WC you have to take tough decisions and not be scared of upsetting senior players. We did after all bench Akhtar in 2011

What's the worse he can do if hes dropped ? Retire ? Lol he wont be missed. At all.

Malik, Razzaq and Afridi all hid their real age but they got exposed at the end of their career when thy had reflexes of much older person and struggled badly.
 
Malik should never have been selected for the world cup, the guy has been
torturing Pak cricket fans for 20 years now.
 
Doesn't matter if he is dropped or not, he has done his job. Time to write an autobiography and bad-mouth the system.
 
We have had one of these almost every WC since 92. Old guys playing on past reputations. Miandad 96/97, ijaz 99, wasim 2003, inzi 2007, Younis and misbah 2015
 
I hope he can muster enough courage and retire right now. Before flying for the WC he was telling reporters that why are Pak fans naraaz from me??
 
After 28 innings Shoaib Malik averages a breathtaking 13.57 runs per match.
 
Would Imad Wasim be any worse than him?

It's a decision that Pakistan need to make.
 
We had to put up with yk in 2015 and Malik in 2019.
I should add hafeez to that list as well - what good is you me 15 year career if you are going to be dismissed by a part timer off a full toss.
 
He's been struggling recently. I like him as he's a honest trier and a non-controversial character. But he needs to be dropped.
 
He isn't the same ever since he went to Pak for personal reasons. Both Asif and Malik seem to be somewhere else with their thoughts.

The coach needs to have a good talk with these guys.
 
Occupying a spot. Selectors are to be blamed though in my opinion. He had shown no form in the last 1 year and had a terrible career average in Eng.
 
I mean what are we even expecting of him? What’s his role as a batter?
I am perplexed.

OK, he isn't making many runs but he's our senior player and I am hopeful his experience will serve us well in upcoming matches. I would be shocked if he doesnt. His entire reason for selection in the tournament is based on his supposed credentials vs. India

to be clear, i am not arguing for his inclusion. I expect him to be dismissed by spin for a low score vs india

Haris might be a better choice, Imad has been useless with the bat ever since he was found out and is also a downgrade from Malik in the field.

Haris is a solid bat, gives a decent bowling option, and has a safe pair of hands.
 
I believe he won't play the next match and those bandage on the fingers. He has been wearing them throughout the tour.

He maybe the damad of India but I for one feel he should sit out of the next game or he will get very imbarresed if he isn't already.

Should persist with Harris or Shadaab or even Immad.

India probably his last chance. Shadab in for Asif Ali should be only change. Also last chance for Hasan Ali.

Who do we replace in for malik and hasan? Haris technically sound batsman but a mental midget, our reserves shaheen and hasnain are brainless bowler who have no clue where the ball will land. My friend hasan is still better than these 2 flukes
 
I think his ODI career should be over after the Australia match. Hafeez can drag himself till the end of the WC as he has been performing. I believe Imad should replace him. Haris should replace Asif. Shadab should replace Wahab. Shaheen, Hasan and Amir must play all the remaining games.

MICKEY ARTHUR: I can tell you a guy that's played over 200 ODIs, tomorrow presents a real opportunity for him. As far as I'm concerned, Shoaib Malik didn't play the West Indies team because of balance of team. He batted in the last three overs against England and failed against Australia.

So to say he's failed, there's not much of a barometer just yet. That will be determined over the next couple of games. What I do know is Shoaib Malik brings a hell of a lot to our dressing room. He is an incredible team man. He has incredible skills, and I'm hoping that, on the biggest stage tomorrow, those skills come to the fore.

Let's not forget -- I mentioned it in one of the previous questions -- that is still a fairly young cricket team. Shoaib Malik's experience, Mohammad Hafeez's experience tomorrow will go a long way out in the middle to help these young boys through it.

One of the most pointless comback after 2015 WC. We have been playing with 10 men since CT
 
Many of you guys weren't saying anything when Malik returned in 2015/16 and was bashing Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe to no end.

People were raving about "Shoaib Malik 2.0" and how we never should've dropped him, and should've even made him captain.

I've said since my first day here that Shoaib Malik is an average cricketer in every aspect and against quality pace attacks he'd be exposed. And lo and behold he has, so why the criticism now when the evidence was there over 20 years ?

His capability has always been bash a few spinners and lower ranked opposition here and there, a few performances vs India here and there, and saying the right things in press conferences, and that pulled the wool over peoples' eyes for 20 years.

Let's also not forget that he some how manages to get injured against good oppositions, South Africa, Australia the most recent which comes into my mind.

Expect another single digit score if we bat first and a "fighting" fifty no way near enough to chase down a total. The most pathetic "senior" cricketer Pakistani cricket team has had as far as I recall, and I've been watching this team for a while!

Exactly hopefully after the world cup Sarfraz will be gone too. Malik was an average cricketer at his best. Only thanks to us he's played nearly 300 odi's for us.

Malik has more tape on his hands than runs in this tournament.

I won't hold my breath given he couldn't even put away Mitch Santner in New Zealand last year.

Only in Pakistan do you get selected based on idiotic reasons like this. The guy has been a waste of space all his life and I expect nothing else tomorrow either.
 
Given how these things go, post huge thread criticism, Malik is now as likely as anyone to win the game for Pakistan come Sunday. ::murali

people say this, but quickly after 1 or 2 bad games they even want babar azam out , so nothing exception for sohail.. Haris sohail who had two big 100s against AUS in the recently concluded series was kept out and continued to be out ever the since the first game.... First game against windies was a nightmare no one played themselves in that game, haris and imad scapegoat for that match..

Asif ali a nothing player plays ahead of haris sohail sums up everything..
 
Malik is old and past it, but as they brought him to the WC then he has to play tomorrow, because he is still one of the better players of spin. If he doesn't play tomorrow, he should never have been selected.

We fans can worry all we want...... but it is selectors worry that matters the most.

...and our genius selectors should have been a worried at least these three key stages in last 10 years:




1. When selectors keep selecting his between 2009-2013, even failure after failure.

Why the selectors were not worried when they kept selecting him under these captains between 2009-2013 for 33 ODIs....with these kind of horrible stats?

33 chances.... why? Why were the selectors not worried about the ability and the form on this player?

2. When selectors brought him back permanently right after 2015 WC.

Then right after WC 2015, Misbah & Afridi retire. Two spots open up in our ODI team. Yet, after 33 consecutive failures between 2009-2013 (see stats above), why was he recalled. What had he done to deserve more chances?

Our selectors should have been worried.... very worried! But unfortunately they were not!

3. When Selectors selected him for the 2019 World Cup.
Why weren't our selectors worried about Malik's record in England?

I really like Malik as a player. He has a good temperament , has made the most of his limitations, one of the few players we have produced recently that is good socially and knows how to deal with the press. Also he is one of the hardest workers.

But this guy has been finished for months. He is struggling to bash spin which was his strength. Even his fielding has gone down which was another strength of his! These are signs that a player is coming to the end of his career. He had no business going to this WC due to his poor performances before the tournament and poor record against pace and in England. Rizwan deserved to go. He is younger , better against pace , and gives us a back up keeper as well.

Malik will play tommorow and has only been selected due to his name and experience. This just sums up everything wrong with Pakistan. We hold on to these so called experienced players far too long. We wait until they are on their last legs before forcing them out or waiting until they retire. If this guy was Australian or English he would have been kicked out long ago. And he we are on the eve of 1 of the biggest games in the tournament for us worrying about him playing.

Usually a player carrying on too long doesn't affect their legacy, but I think carrying on too long will affect Malik's reputation. There are enough T20 leagues where this guy can coach or even play and he carried on playing. Deep down he know he is past it.

Hopefully in 2023 , we aren't carrying any players.

Clearly a guy who looks disinterested. He was always someone who rarely wore his heart on his sleeve but for such a senior player he rarely has looked a bit too detached for my liking. But what does he have to lose now given that he is retiring after this tournament? This is the risk of picking a player who has announced he is quitting in advance at the end of a tournament.
 
Was always against Maliks selection in this wc but what I saw today at old trafford made it even worse, the guy was fielding at boundry and shaking hands / talking with the indian fans during the last 15 overs... and then goes onto misfield. Hands in the pockets throughout. This is not what any Pakistani supporter wants to see from a senior player

Malik had a nice purple patch for a while, but now his form is back to normal again.

With Hafeez in the side, Malik just isnt needed.

Hopefully he plays a match winning innings in this match (anything is possible).

He was one of the few Pak players who didn't even come out and say hi to the fans when there was no play in the Pak vs Sri Lanka too. A lot of the other players at least made the effort to try, all you had to do was step onto the balcony and wave. And the only senior who didn't do it, the other seniors like Hafeez, Riaz, Sarfraz, Amir all made big efforts.

Guarantee you that he will contribute nothing if we do indeed end up chasing this. If you are talking about making a "fighting" score of 270 on the other hand, he's your man.
 
Malik should be promoted

Well we keep hearing how he takes on the spinners, if a wicket falls him or sarfraz should come on and attack these spinners to cause a headache to kohli otherwise match will slide out of Pakistan's hands
 
Should be the end of his career ... what a sad end for otherwise not so bad a player..
 
Oh dear, match was lost once batting legend Hafeez got out cheaply, but was hoping to see a masterful quarter-century from Shoaib Malik today so he could silence all critics - maybe we will have
to wait till next World Cup, as I’m sure if he wants to like Hafeez they can easily carry on and play for as long as they wish due to their ‘experience’ and seniority.
 
I would make him the 12th man for the remaining games. Put him in his place and then discard him for good
 
Well he has said in various interviews that he wants to play t20 wc 2020 in Australia, it will be a travesty if he actually does

If he plays again, I hope fans stop watching . I feel bad for all the people who paid to go to England to support Pakistan as their hard earned money is wasted. How can we as a nation accept someone averaging 14 in a country to do well there???? What is the experience of averaging 14 going to help you with????? When you are jumping like a tailender against bumrah , you should know the days are done. This is what is frustrating for fans. Win or lose is part of game but you select players who will fail 95 percent of the time what's the use?
 
We deserve this humilation.

Not saying replacing him would have mattered but we having been playing with 10 men since 1.5 years. Sarfraz should be sacked for being gutless and not dropping him

Reminded me of Pakistan picking up Miandad in 96 WC who was too picked just based on past glories against India.

Miandad was ATG and actually had some glories. Malik seriously hasnt achieved anything of that sort

Theres no comparison Miandad was a proven legend in years gone by Malik isnt even fit to be mentioned in the same breath as javed even if miandad was past it by 1996

Win and lose is part of the game but the min is players should be selected on merit and malik over harris is a joke How many years will pakistan go out with 10 players in the team

Its a travesty for fans like me we have witnessed tailenders like him make a career being picked over and over again

When will the age of mediocrity end?
