CHENNAI: In an unsavoury incident, a couple of miscreants were detained by the police for hurling a shoe at Ravindra Jadeja during an IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
The incident happened in the eighth over of the KKR innings. The unidentified protestors hurled shoes at Jadeja, who was stationed at long-on. The footwear missed the player fell near the boundary rope as Faf du Plessis and Lungi Ngidi were taking a stroll.

The match was preceded by massive protests from various groups and activists due to Cauvery water dispute prompting IPL governing council chairman Rajeev Shukla to seek government intervention.
The two persons detained by the police for their involvement are allegedly a part of actor-director Seeman's Naam pro-Tamil outfit Tamizhar.

Naam Tamizhar leader and film personality Seeman, film-maker Bharathirajaa and scores of activists were taken into custody by the police, who had a tough time managing the ever increasing number of protesters.

Hundreds of activists of outfits like TVK, Naam Tamizhar and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), besides some Muslim groups blocked roads at the arterial Anna Salai and TTK Salai, hugely affecting traffic movement, police said.

This is the situation outside the stadium and this country's citizens accuse Pakistan of lack of security. Compare this to the crowd in Karachi. Lot of people who came to watch in Natl. Stadium had trouble sitting in the stadium with no water supply, heat, long lines but not one scuffle or mishap. There is definitely a security issue in India's hosting the tournament. Asia Cup in UAE logistically and otherwise is good for BCCI which is why we should pullout from the Cup.

This is called a democracy where people are free to protest. Come back with your rant when they are holding AK-47s and targeting team buses.

Learn about democracy. Someday Pakistan may have it.

Was wondering why whole sections were empty like in the Pakistan round of the PSL.

No.permit, TN is the biggest red tape state , so hard to do business not even funny and the new thing is protetsts, literally protesting against everything.

people are protesting for water related issues. they have every right to protest.. how can you anyone stop them from protesting.. they live in a democracy not a communist country..

happens all the time

"39 reported injuries during arrests. A total of 97 police officers received injuries during the G20. An unknown number of protesters who were not arrested sustained injuries."

this is during the last football world cup

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_protests_in_Brazil

and this swept US last NFL season

All major events attract protests.. I hope it keeps happening as protesting citizens keep democracy alive.

According to the Municipal Corporation those stands are illegal. TNCA says they are legal. Battle is in courts. Till then that section remains closed.

Chennai's few stands are closed for last few years. here is some background info

Agree with Jaded there.. TN is huge red tape state.. Surprisingly it is also one of the most industrialized states.. I have no idea how those industries survive.. everything is very slow an people are quick to protest..

if they were free to protest they wouldnt put the leaders in jail, i agree with you we shouldnt compare the security, but this says a lot about india and IPL how they are trying to cover reality by IPL riches

It could be so much worse, just read up on the recent behaviours of Scousers at Anfield !

What reality? They are free to protest but there are permissions required if you want to assemble a big crowd. Of course if you create a law and order situation you are going to get arrested but it is never a big deal.

I don't understand. How exactly can you cover reality by IPL riches? Who is even hiding anything? What am I missing?

I heard the shoe was hurled at jadeja by Pandya. It was the same shoe which bumrah wore when he bowled that no ball to Fakhar.

Pak posters comparing the security situation in India and Pakistan

Ohh the bitterness.

Have to say I'm very surprised. I have a really high opinion of the Chennai crowd, both in terms of how sporting they usually are and how knowledgeable they are. I was treated pretty well too when I visited the city despite being from Pakistan a few years ago.

Why're they creating problems inside the stadium to protest some local issue? Sounds ridiculous.

That good for nothing Rajni effect. It was just a trailer imagine the extent of damage he can cause just by blabbering on some other more sensitive issues ..
Embarrassing that people in India still workship such out of flavor overacting clowns. Be it Bachan or Srk.
Yeah I said it..mind it.

Chennai crowd being called out as knowledgeable and sporting is one of those things that started after the 1999 Test match against Pakistan. They gave standing ovation to Pak side even though India lost the Test, so somehow it's become one of those things that people like to talk about.

I'm not suggesting that they are not knowledgeable or sporting -- they certainly are. But same can be said about the Bangalore crowd or Mumbai crowd -- and many other places in India.

From the pictures, it looks like they were protesting outside the stadium -- which is their right.

Throwing a shoe, or anything else, at a player is of course totally unacceptable. Glad to hear that authorities are taking appropriate action against the miscreants.

Laughable to see Pakistanis (not you) trying to compare this with the dire security situation in Pakistan where you need to provide presidential level security to conduct PSL matches.

Nah, looking from the outside in, that's hard for me to believe. I cannot for one moment imagine a Mumbai crowd appreciating Pakistan enough to do that in the first place. However, my roommate is from Chennai and has encyclopedic cricket knowledge, so I might be biased haha.

Protesting outside is a democratic right; however, if that shoe had actually hit a player this would have been much more serious than you are making it out to be. Of course, it's not the same as the situation in Pakistan, but player safety is player safety. The issue is that whatever happens you shouldn't have issues *inside* the stadium which is fair to say. But I really don't know how you can screen for people's willingness to throw shoes.
