Should Hasan Ali regularly open the bowling in Test cricket?

I’m quite sure the team management will open the bowling with Amir and Abbas in the UK tour.

But when I’ve seen Hasan bowl with the new ball he gets some good outswing which could be lethal. In limited overs he has a tendency to leak runs with the new ball but surely that won’t be a problem in test cricket?

Call me crazy but I think in 2 years time, Hasan and Shaheen should open the bowling in Tests.

With Shadab and Agha as the spinners in the U.A.E.

Yes. His role in tests is different to what it is in ODIs. He doesn't need the niche middle over quota dynamic in tests that he does in ODIs, I'd give him a new ball in tests and a license to attack with Amir holding up the other end.

Theoretically it could do wonders with Amir swinging the ball in and Hasan out to right handers and vice-versa with the left handers. Maybe give it a shot vs Ireland?

Yes
Chief Destroyer can tell you why this guy should always have the new ball in hand, especially in test matches.

He has to. Work on those outswingers to the right-hand batsman on one end, with Amir bringing it back in from the other.

Someone tell me *why* you wouldn’t open with Hasan

Maybe lack of experience? The lines one should bowl in test cricket are quite different to the wicket to wicket or wide lines often used in limited overs cricket. You can experiment with the length a bit but getting the line right is so important. Since the first 10-20 overs are so important maybe someone who has the experience should bowl those overs?

I don’t see any other reason tbh. He’s very talented.

He is more effective in OD . You need to distribute work load of players specially the bowlers.
Mir Hamza will not get a chance in OD , so its better to give a full series of 3 - 4 Test matches before arriving at any conclusions.

Amir and Rahat/Abbas. Hassan doesn't naturally swing as much so won't be able to make the most out of the new ball.

Abbas is probably a better option than both Amir and Hasan at the moment, has consistently taken wickets with the new ball till now.
Hasan hasn't been able to control the new ball as much as i have seen him. Even in New Zealand series, Fahim was doing a better job opening the bowling than Hasan. Saw some good consistent leftward swing from him in the first PSL season, but in subsequent editions, he hasn't been able to do it consistently.
At the moment, I feel he would be like Umar Gul with a new ball(not a derogatory remark, but it's just not what you want from an opening bowler in Tests)
Plus even Azhar Mahmood has repeatedly mentioned that Hasan is not comfortable with opening the bowling.

If your going to give him sporadic chances with the new ball then don’t expect much.

He was quality with the new ball in the recently concluded edition of the PSL barring the final. Displayed good control and shaped it both ways, not much more you can ask from a new ball bowler.

Can you link to me just a single time Azhar has said Hasan isn’t comfortable with the new ball. This comes as a surprise because he’s been opening the bowling his entire domestic career.

If Hassan opens the bowling with Abbas we will lose the two threatening overs Amir bowls every 80 overs per innings.:(
