Despite what he may think, the general opinion is that Pakistan have failed to live up to expectations during the tour of England.

A near win turned into a defeat and a near miss in the 3rd Test does not a good tour make!

Along the way selection decisions have been dubious and the strategies employed which defy imagination.

So what should PCB do with Misbah now?

Stay as head coach as the position suits him — administrative, and there are separate batting, fielding, pace bowling, and spin bowling coaches for everything now.

Misbah’s main failures have been in selection: bringing back the wrong players. Akmal, Shehzad, Hafeez, Malik, Sohail Khan, Imran Khan, Kashif Bhatti, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Mohammad Irfan all come to mind, and dropping Rohail Nazir and Zafar Gohar from the England squad is inexcusable.

To be fair, he’s made some good picks too: Rizwan, Naseem, Haris Rauf, and Haider Ali are all picks by Misbah, and none of them would have gotten a call up under Mickey who would have backed Sarfaraz, ignored Rauf, and dismissed Naseem as too young (though he might have picked Haider).

Therefore, credit where credit is due. However, I feel Misbah does not have the time to monitor rising stars in domestic cricket by virtue of his dual role and of no fault to himself - he must step down himself as selector so that someone else may do the grunt work.

Lastly, his continuance as head coach is essential because some measure of stability is needed in the dressing room. After Mickey and Sarfaraz were kicked out, all stability went out the window and this harms player development. They’ve made up for lost time through the 2 months in quarantine where everyone has become well accustomed to one another and the new coaching system has set in. To remove the head coach at this stage will harm Pakistan cricket for the next 2 years as the next coach will take time to find his feet. He won’t have the luxury of a 2 month bootcamp to gain the trust of his players, nor is it easy to hold up under immense public scrutiny as Pakistan has lost most of its recent matches of importance.

Misbah should continue as head coach, devoting his full abilities to the role, relieving himself of the difficult selection job. This allows the selector to be aggressive and well-informed with their picks.

Its too early to say that. Everyone knows he will not go anywhere in next 2 years (1 year out of 3 years finished).
It should be titled at the end of 2022

"Should Misbah continue as head coach cum selector for another 3 years !!!"

I think he will want to resign as selector soon. We don’t have the quality to beat good teams and Misbah will get criticized on two fronts, so he will eventually get himself out of the firing line to an extent.

The problem is that he might be forced to continue for a bit longer because of PCB’s ego.

Wasim Khan was flexing and thought he had pulled off a genius move by combining the coach and selector role. If this was such a bright idea we would have seen bigger teams like Australia, India and England do it as well.

They are smarter than us and understand the game better, so there must be a reason why they haven’t thought about combining the two positions.

If he is removed as selector right now, PCB will have to swallow it’s pride and acknowledge that it was a failed experiment. If they do that, people immediately lose faith in the so-called revolution and reforms that they have embarked.

Misbah is only part of the problem and not the whole problem.

Even if you take away his selector's job, I don't think a lot will change.

The elephant in the room is lack of new talent, Misbah or Mickey or Shoaib Akhtar can't solve it. That's the reason oldies like Malik / Hafeez / Kamran Akmal etc can still play as they aren't displaced in domestic games.

Now before someone says merit based selections aren't done, I think it's all rubbish. I have heard multiple times that Fawad / Abid etc are great players, having seen both in England, I don't think they are great as of today. Please drop them now and move on, else more disappointing things coming...

I like the role, it pins responsibility on one person but I don't think Misbah is suited to it. He is too negative in his thinking when it comes to young batsmen across all formats and is too stubborn for his thinking to evolve.

IMO the dual role should be the norm despite Misbah being erratic and sometimes baffling with his selections.

The problem I don't trust any Pakistani coach to do justice to the power and authority of this dual role. They make selections on likes and dislikes as opposed to data, analytics and as part of a long-term strategy.

He needs to give up one role. As a selector, I feel he selects way too many oldies. I really don't mind him as head coach because of his integrity & focus on fitness but he needs to have a support team of good, tactical minds around him. The likes of Waqar Younis or Younas Khan isn't gonna cut it. We need a proper, qualified batting & fielding coach asap.

It's impossible for one person to do both jobs at the same time. If Misbah is spending time with the team, travelling on overseas tours, how can he possibly keep up with domestic cricket and scout players across the country?

A head coach at the international level is mostly a people-manager, which I think Misbah is okay at. As a selector he is woeful, its been blunder after blunder.

The axis of incompetence needs to go. There is no solution but their permanent removal from Pakistan cricket.

The criticism will build up if Pak also lose T20I series.

All down to Misbah - ie level of thick-skinness...

Jesus Christ Misbah, this guy is a curse for the Pak team! talk about losing your cool, not good for the team at all, its only a bit of T20 fun; the last Pak need is for him to sway or influence a young captains development, Babar is learning on the job. Has anyone seen the movie Old Yeller ? I genuinely think that Misbah needs to be taken behind the barn in the same way. #MisbahOut

Media reporting that Misbah's future will be discussed soon between Mani and Wasim ....Stay tuned.

Who should he be replaced by I would be tempted to give akhar a go as chief selector

A person shouldn't have multiple roles. Quality of work can suffer. Also, there can be conflict of interests.

I think he needs to lose all of his power or else we will become a cricket comedy team.

What has Misbah achieved as a selector or a coach.
Absolutely nothing, he had full control and power, which he failed to utilize, after one year he still doesn’t have a team, plan or know which direction he wants to go.
His expressions are basically throwing Babar under the buss, where these expressions when Azhar was captain during test series.
It’s simple pass the 💵.
He never had any credentials to be a coach or Selector
When you don’t want to pay dues and learn you have no right to teach

Nothing at all atleast get the selection right thats why I am disappointed the most its world cup next year now he should have made a call and get rid of the oldies and select the youngsters atleast people will be like okay atleast hes giving a chance to youngsters.

The depressing thing is that we try young bowlers but seem to have given up
With batsman. Misbah seems seems hellbent on trying 30+ players. Its seems that we have swapped places with england. Now they try youth and have attacking mindset and we are stuck 20yrs in the past. Look at banton for example. Their b team is wiping the floor with us. Looks like we are slowly turning our cricket into
Our new hockey/ squash. Give the youngsters a chance for goodness sake. What have we got to lose. They might even turn out to be half decent!! Cant be any worse then the current lot

The only dual role Misbah should hold in Pakistan cricket is the bus driver and drinks carrier.

Please give the Head Coach and Chief Selector to someone who can actually coach and nurture our young players, not someone who picks his chacha buddies and puts his head in his hands when his young captain is getting a decision wrong.

Misbah should be sacked. Nice guy but still working 20years in the past. Cricket has moved on. Just look at our number 3 and 4!! No need to say any more. When was the last time we tried a new batsman. Look at state of test team? Now we will bash zimbabwe in a week or two and all will be forgotten. He should be sacked for the simple fact that he is taking us backwards. No future planning. Winning and losing is part of the game but here it is not even an even playing field. Diplomat, good guy.. yes. Pakistan coach..NO

Yes defo needs to be sacked before the Zimbabwe games other he will stay for another 1 or so.

They need another coach who can guide and give opportunities to the young Pakistani batesman cheif selector should be akhtar

I suspect he will stay for the humiliation next year t20 world cup and then we will have wholesale changes. Lets just switch off and come back after that tournament. Should be good match up
Between england big hitters and kohlis team. Shame we will be there to make up the numbers but you reap what you sew

So if he gets sacked, we will get a new dual coach and selector or we will revert to the old way of separating the two roles?

It is highly likely to be the latter, which means Misbah will keep his position as head coach with a new chief selector taking over.

So in that case, who will do Wasim Khan’s accountability? What was the point of this dual coach and selector stunt?

LAHORE: Pakistan’s head coach-cum-chief selector Misbahul Haq’s future hangs in the balance as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) looks set to take important decisions over the next few weeks. PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Wasim Khan have returned to Pakistan, after spending their annual leaves in England, and will be looking into important matters that remained unaddressed during their absence.

One such issue is Misbah’s dual role, especially after the team’s mediocre performance during the ongoing tour of England. Pakistan lost the three-match Test series, one-nil, bearing in mind the fact that they lost the first Test from a winning position.

The Men in Green are also one-nil down in the ongoing three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series and would look to avoid a series defeat by winning the final match on Tuesday. Losing the T20I series is likely to result in more fingers pointing towards the already under-pressure Misbah.

Misbah was given the dual role in September 2019 in all three formats on a three-year contract. It must be noted that Mani had tacitly given one-year ultimatum to Misbah, after the Men in Green’s disappointing performances with the former captain at the helm, back in December, 2019.

The dual role is a great idea, but Misbah is the wrong guy.

You need an experienced coach that's managed teams through difficult tours when it comes to building a team combination.

A person like that could do wonderful things with selection in his hands.

Misbah can replace good for nothing Mani and Wasim Khan. We need a honest selector who can get rid of oldies and good aggressive foreign head coach+batting coach.

Fair point. Because Misbah is Head Coach and Chief Selector he needs to be in front of the media before and after each game. The people that chose Misbah should also be held accountable and that includes Wasim Akram. He's rubber stamped all of these decisions.

Lol, how long do you think Misbah will stay? Do you think he will stay until 2022 and then get 3 years extension? So 4-5 years at least?

"Nice guy" based on what?

People just say things without any knowledge.

You can look at this way, Wasim Khan and Ehsan Mani gave Misbah a golden opportunity to make a positive difference with the two most powerful roles i.e. Head Coach and Chief Selector and Misbah is the one who screwed it up with yet another average output and that he is the one who didn't deliver?

A win-less England tour thus far has put Misbah-ul-Haq under pressure and the PCB may have to rethink its strategy of entrusting the former captain with the key positions of head coach and chief selector for all three formats.

Pakistan lost the Test series 0-1 and go into the series-deciding third T20 on Tuesday, trailing 0-1. The first match could not be completed due to rain while Pakistan lost high-scoring second T20 by five wickets to England.

"The third and final T20 is of great significance as already the popular opinion is building that Misbah is not able to handle the responsibilities of being head coach and chief selector and that too in all three formats," said Mohsin Khan, former Test cricketer, ex-head coach and chief selector.

Pakistan under Misbah since last October has only managed to win two matches against an under strength Bangladesh side this year while losing three-nil to Sri Lanka, 2-0 to Australia and now getting battered in England.

Mohsin, who was head coach when Misbah captained Pakistan to a whitewash of England in the Test series in 2012, felt that it was not a good sign that popular opinion was not in favour of the current chief selector.

"I was chief selector when the board asked me to take over as interim head coach in 2011 the first thing I did was to tell the Chairman Ijaz Butt to release me as chief selector as I can't do both things," Mohsin recalled.

The former Test opener said that in modern day cricket it was taxing for any individual to be answerable on two important fronts.

A reliable source said that PCB CEO Wasim Khan would have a discussion with Misbah and the other coaches when the team returns home later this week.

"The fact that 2021, 22 and 23 are World Cup years is also not lost on the board," he said.

Former Test pacer Tanvir Ahmed lashed out at the Pakistan team management for having no clue as to what teams to play in different formats.

"The selections are all wrong and to add to problems the captaincy on the field has also been very poor in the Tests and now in T20 matches," he said. PTI

Pakistanis are very impatient and this stops the people making decisions to make brave changes.

Pakistan is too worried about losing these t20 matches , the current test championship and jamodis that they are stuck to so called experience. What can misbah do when he is worried that people ont tolerate when his team loses? So he is sticking with hafeez and malik so pakistan can have better chance of winning but pakistan are still losing.

Pakistan need to be ready to accept a lot of defeats in the next couple of years to build a team but the selections made during this time need to make sense. It still baffles me how the hell did musa khan played test matches for pakistan and that too against australia in australia. You want to give teenagers chances ? good , but find the good ones first.

Why has zafar gohar never been tested despite being a contender for more than 5 years or probably 7 , where is usman salahuddin? He has been waiting for his chance for good 7 years now. Why couldnt they try them against bangladesh or zimbabwe?

The fear of losing is not helping pakistan all , pakistan need to get out of this mindset and should be open to options especially in the middle order in test matches. T20s should be exclusive to find players for odi team , not to play 40 years dudes.

If Misbah is to be sacked for lack of performance, why not Wasim? He was the one to appoint Misbah in the first place. The impact of the poor results should be felt by him as well.

Misbah screwed up in terms of performances, and Wasim royally screwed up by handing all the powers to a man who had zero prior experience in either role.

Based on this flop experiment, how can we expect Wasim Khan to make a more educated choice in the future? He is plain incompetent with no vision.

We have been repeatedly told that he was set to be ECB’s next chief before he decided to do a favor for PCB. Looking at his decision-making, ECB dodged a bullet.

Misbah's performance is exclusively judged by the team's results, new talent being discovered on which one can clearly see he is failing. Wasim's output is judged on several different parameters, yes the appointment of Misbah was a blunder but he has successfully brought about changes in other departments and aspects in the PCB so his report card is mixed and he will be elligible to continue.

He should be sacked from both roles after this England tour is over.

Misbah = Mediocrity

Misbah's role being discussed again after Ehsan Mani comments.

Reports stating zeeshan malik zeeshan Ashraf abdullah name is in the mix for zimbabwe tour

After the statement by ehsan mani, its dumb to even fire him.

His contract needs to be completed, you fire him not only will you pay him half salary but we will most probably hire foreign coach and have to pay him aswell.

Now the dumb statement made by ehsan mani can cause legal problema for pcb. Remember ehsan mani made dumb statements in the past about the audits and look what has happened. He was scolded by the people doing the audit if psl.

Why doesn't Pakistan appoint a director of the team like England did with Andrew Strauss and make that one individual responsible for the coach selection and selectors? Eliminate all the grey areas

Pakistan Cricket Board to review head coach Misbah's one-year performance

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be reviewing the one-year performance of the national team's head coach and chief selector, Misbah-ul-Haq, before the home series against Zimbabwe.

PCB CEO Wasim Khan told the media that he and Chairman Ehsan Mani would be meeting with Misbah very soon to discuss his performance.

"We will also ask him about his future plans particularly for the coming home series against Zimbabwe. Whether he has any plans to try out youngsters against them or not," Wasim Khan said.

Misbah was named head coach and chief selector last year in October after the board released foreign coach Mickey Arthur and his support team following Pakistan's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

A reliable source said that when the PCB top officials meet Misbah, they would also be making it clear to him about the board's new ethics code which does not allow any employee of the board to hold dual jobs.

Khan also made it clear that due to commitments, he and Ehsan Mani could not have a meeting with Misbah and Test captain Azhar Ali over their interaction with Prime Minister Imran Khan in which they pleaded for allowing departmental teams to take part in domestic cricket.

Mani has already said that he was not happy with the way Misbah and the company directly approached the Prime Minister to discuss domestic cricket matters.

Please sack him and no extra time. Also banish him from any chance of coaching Pakistan national side. How Waqar Younis has managed to return to the national side 3 times in any coaching capacity is mind boggling

Misbah will continue in the role unless he states hes going to continue the dual role jobs

Interesting. Regardless whatever the outcome is, this appointment is another look at the cluster fudge the PCB has made by appointing a no experience, lack of qualifications having Misbah. They essentially shot themselves in the foot.

I personally think despite my views on this appointments, It doesn't really help that he's really only been in the job just one year and fortunately for him he has had some tough away series. A coach really can't transform a sides fortunes within a year, regardless how good they are.

There are clues in that statement that will allow the axis of incompetence to continue for now.

He recently said its a young team.

TBF, I actually agree the ODI will or should be youngish because the usual washed up oldies he usually selects aren't on the scene.

Hafeez has done well in T20 so obviously he well be there but can't see the Rahat Ali's, Sohail Khan's, IK snr's etc being selected for Zimbo series no matter how shameless Misbah is.

That's fine but when you say you have a young team make sure it's a young team in the england tour malik ifti imran khan sohail khan asad shafiq abid ali fawad were given ago.

Also what was this short term targets did he have any short term targets.
Has he developed players
Has he developed a VC in t20s

I think he needs to work on coaching philosophy

That's the thing he saying its young but if you look at it it's far from young.

Oh defo they wont be selected for Zimbabwe but will be selected for new zwaland test series.

With regarding to hafeez I have no problem aslong as someone performs he can be in the team but I only want either hafeez or malik in t20s

Yes, the test team will still have expired and useless oldies as he has a bit more room to manoeuvre to get his pals in.

But if he played youngesters against england New Zealand people would have been less harsh even if they got whitewashed but if hes playing the oldies who have been thier for 5 years then he rightly needs to be criticised

You see my point as it is for a few others on this board is not strictly about oldies and youngsters.

What we want is a balanced side that will not only compete but win against the best sides in the world.

This normally means majority of the side is in their twenties with the rest early thirties and maybe a youngster.

Misbah teams are heavily skewed with a few players in mid thirties or older and few kids thrown in to make it look like a young side.

If these oldies were any good then by all means play them but we can see they’ve been a liability. Babar and Rizwan have been standouts and both are in twenties.

Misbah should be removed from all his roles in the PCB, hes been an Epic fail since he took over in the PCB.
