They are available for selection but not offered contracts - seems like a hint to me! But is PCB justified in their decision?

No.But whats so irksome is that Sarfaraz has one.And not just a contract but an A contract. All three should have been denied this privilege.

reallly dude? and why would tht be? he was the reason our 2nd best batsmen in the CWC had to bat at no5, we couldnt finish off games properly and apart from the eng game (he was dropped on 14) and maybe aus, he was a big shame in the middle of the innings ... and at 39 (official, he is above 42 given how pak players hide age) he is a done n dusted item

Really?
Based on?

If a player of his experience is available for selection (as per PCB release) and he has not made any comments about retiring then he should be a centrally contracted player.

Else, he should be told that he is no longer eligible for selection.

Doing it both ways is a little confusing.

Not every player eligible for selection has to be centrally contracted. It is not confusing if you keep in mind the PCB regulations on this or the regulations of most boards around the world.

That is like asking, should convicts be given the keys to their lock ups?

We need to move on from the toxic seniority culture. This has been a major stumbling block in Pakistan's quest for success.

Hafeez brought it upon himself by retiring it from tests. I am 100% sure that if he was available for tests, he would have been given a contract. At 38, he won't be picked for shorter formats anymore.

Malik already retired from two formats. A specialist T20 player and that too mediocre does not deserve to get any contract.

He is 38 and can max play for a year or two but I would rather have youngster get developed for future than trying to extract something out of Hafeez. He is still a useful player but is in his twilight and one day we will have to look past him anyways as he isnt gonna get any younger.

Thanks God they haven't been given one. Both are rubbish. Shouldn't have been given last time. Hopefully this means theses shameless clowns won't ever plan for us again.

hafeez is officially 38 and may be 40 in real , he was kept for his use in the world cup which he failed to deliver. He should retire.

I don't think they want a central contract, because without contract they are free to play as many T20 tournaments as they want.
However category A contract for Sarfaraz means he will be retained as a test captain. I am hoping for a New Captain at least for the ODi & T20s.

There was no "HELL NO!!" option so I picked "correct decision by the PCB". Its time for both to retire from international cricket.

Correct decision by PCB. If you're not going to be around for the next World Cup, you shouldn't be anywhere near the team.

This could be a bad decision commercially, not sure how sponsors might react when they find out that the megastar of Pakistan cricket is not contracted and might not be playing for Pakistan in all games, this could also affect TV broadcasting rights as let’s face it there’s a massive global audience that tunes in just to watch the batting maestro, the one with a swagger like Viv Richards and flamboyance of Gordon Greenidge when at the crease.

Disagree entirely. If a player is available for selection, he must earn the central contract. If he doesn't get one, it doesn't mean that he needs to be told to retire, it means that if he wants one in the future his performances will have to improve dramatically.

With your proposed system, the selectors would never be able to pick a player who isn't contracted, because any non-contracted has to be told he is not eligible for selection!

But remember Hafeez isnt just any player - he has represented Pakistan many times. All I am saying is to give him respect - either say you will no longer be selected or put him on a contract.

Ok fair point. But why should the PCB close down any possibility of Hafeez being selected ever again? By leaving him out of the centrally contracted players, the PCB is saying look, you're unlikely to be selected in the future, but if you show us something extrodinary, you still have a chance.

I just think handing Hafeez a contract right now would have sent a really bad message. That you can fail to perform but if you're a 'senior', you will get a contract regardless. It would have been very unfair on the countless deserving youngsters who missed out.

Whether or not they wanted to,they had to, they trimmed the list of contracts. Asif Ali and Talat haven't even got contracts. Nor promising talents like Saad ali. How can you give guys like Malik or Hafeez on their way out if you can not even give those guys contracts. There should be at least a D level contract, where the top performers in domestic are placed which incentives domestic performance and at least gives something to players working hard to break into internationals.

I think it was the right decision (I wouldn't have given them D contract if it existed either), both have played their part in Pakistan internationals but it's time to move on. I don't blame players for not calling their own time on their careers, but sometimes the board has to make the hard decisions. The door is still open, but it's clearly showing they have to do something exemplary to earn their place now which feels fair, it still gives the players the right to fight for their place rather than the policy of just ignoring you no matter what you do.

I think it's fair. If Hafeez is able to go back to domestic, set it alight and outscore everyone he gets back his place. Prove he's still some worth.

I get it's a little rude to Hafeez, he's been an important part of Pakistani cricket for many years now, and unlike Malik more in recent past, rather than when Malik was good 10 years or so ago. And he didn't exactly have a failure of a year, he got some good scores against SA, and won a game against England in the world cup. It's just time to move on for him, he won't realistically be around next world cup. It's a waste of a contract if you give one to a player you don't have intentions playing or in the future. The current list of contract is so short, it's basically all players currently playing in formats, even squad players are being left out.

Woah, that's an excellent, balanced post, with zero emotional rhetoric.

Hafeez even until this World Cup was a key player for us.

But yeah, have to move on.

I agree that we need to look ahead but I do feel we need to say to the older players, look you are done but please continue playing etc- but if we do have them in contention then have them on your paycheque.

I think it was great decision from PCB to not offer contracts to these two finished veterans. Time to get young blood and prepare for 2023 WC.
