Should multi-team tournaments have best of 3 finals?

I was watching highlights of a triangular series in Australia and realised how they used to have best of 3 final concept.

Do you guys think this should to used in multi team/nation tournaments like World cups, IPL, PSL, Champions Trophy, Asia Cup etc.

For a Pakistani fan’s point of view Lets take an example of PSL- suppose you’re an Islamabad fan. Your team does extremely well in league round, knock outs and reaches to the finals. On the other hand there is another team lets say Lahore which limps to the final( may be because of technicality, fluke, luck etc). One freak performance from anyone from Lahore and the cup is gone for good. All your good performance through out the tournament means nothing then.

I’d be extremely disappointed and furious( and feel cheated in a way) if something like that happens to the team I support.

One downside of this concept is - Aura and excitement of a grand final might not be there as fans and teams might think that even if we lose this one we have 2 more chances.

What do you guys think?

No its too long as it is - enough chances for teams to show their worth.

I understand that but scheduling 2 more matches in 1 or 2 month long tournaments- does it matter much?

Shouldn’t be this fair to the team who have played brilliantly throughout the tournament but lost the final because of bad luck/ rain/ dew factor etc

Always thought why this didn't happen in the first place.

It's like baseball, for the world series final, there are a total of 7 games. Home and Away games. I think we should apply the same concept here. Especially when the PSL comes back to Pakistan.

Just imagine two rivalries and having a best out of 3. One game in X city and another in Y.

This can also show the true value of a team, instead of fluke wins, will be more consistent and show the value of the team.

No. The whole point of the final is to see which team can cope with the pressure.

There is less pressure but more endurance required to win best of 7 or 5 because you have to prove you are worthy enough over a long stretch.

It eliminates factors of luck and chance.

No wonder most NBA and MLB series finals are not based on one game...

Welcome back. NBA and MLB finals are played in just one country who have the time window to achieve that, wouldn't work in an international tournament where players have other commitments.

We should also reschedule matches if some player gets a cold or if someone looks at the captain in a funny way.

Luck is part of the game. To make the final you still have to play good cricket.

The beauty of a World final in cricket, like WC/Euros in football, is it assesses the ability to rise and perform when it matters most. The excitement and nerves that a one-off brings in a winner takes all game symbolises the beauty of sport.

So the answer is that a one-off final is the best!
