So Pakistan have failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup, have had a terrible run leading into the World Cup, whitewashed by Australia and thrashed by England.

At the World Cup they were humiliated by West Indies, beaen easily by India and also lost to Australia.

Do you think it's time for Sarfaraz Ahmed to resign as Pakistan's ODI skipper?

He cannot hold his spot as a batsman. His time is up.

Strong reports that he will be announcing his resignation once we arrive back in Pakistan.

That leaves the question - who is Captain

I want Shadab Khan to lead the side !! Imad is good but doesn’t warrant a full time role in the team

If he resigns, then he might come back as captain in future, which won't be good. PCB should strip him of captaincy and drop him for good. He can then focus on eating biryani's and parathas and add more inches around his belly!

Sarfraz should be just a keeper for tests. Rizwan for now limited over keeper. Babar can be captain.

There is no other player groomed for captaincy right now and picking a random player for captaincy will have similar chaos we had post WC-2007

100% he should resign so that Pak cricket can move into the 21st century finally. We don’t need a street fighter. We need someone who leads from the front and most importantly makes the team on merit. Sarfaraz has neither of these qualities.

Even more important is his removal from test captaincy. He is listless when wickets are not coming.

In short, he should resign not just based on the WC performance (which is not that bad) but his overall performance as a leader and batsman since assuming captaincy.

He should resign as a matter of principle.
However this will not improve the problems in the team.
He is a better captain than Misbah.
Pakistan team is now weak in all areas - batting, bowling and fielding but two things they can turnaround quickly which the management should work on as a matter of urgency are: a) strike rotation which will improve batsmen's strike rate b) greater variety in bowling - more yorkers, slower balls, bouncers, more flight, different angles etc

If they don't improve the above areas quickly Pakistan will only be able to compete with Afghanistan.

Make babar azam the captain and groom him and stick with him just like newzealand did with kane Williamson.

I hope he resigns himself better to go yourself rather than being booted out like Misbah and Azhar. Already done better than Misbah in the two international tournaments they have in common.

My first bet would be Amir to take over as captain. Imad is a good shout too but he is too bits and pieces and may be a liability on the side, unless he starts batting at 6 and contributing significantly more with the bat.

He doesn't deserve to be in the team, leave alone being a captain. Barring Pakistan, i don't think he can walk in any of the top 10 test team (including Afghanistan, Shehzad is a much better batsman).

The only one who can be a captain based on his performance is Babar Azam.

For a successful captain, you should have the following qualities

1. Be the best 1-3 players in the team (be automatic selection)
2. Be smart as a leader and good strategist, someone people will listen to
3. Be a match winner (i.e. win matches single handedly on ocassion)

#1 is a requirement, 2 & 3 can be negotiated slightly.

Based on this criteria, only Babar Azam can justify a place in the team. Here is the team, let's see if there is anyone else

1. Fakhar Zaman - going through bad patch right now, may even get dropped after WC
2. imamulHaq - ****** label, too new, and inconsistent right now
3. Babar Azam - The best player on the team and automatic selection
4. Hafeez - Should retire
5. Shoaib Malik - Should retire
6. Harris Sohail - Not permanent in team, does not exude confidence, but I don't know about him for sure
7. Sarfaraz - Incumbent
8. Shadab - Too young, not consistent enough to justify automatic selection
9. Imad Wasim - Not consistent enough to justify automatic selection. But may have outside chance
10. Wahab Riaz - Too old, not good enough to be in team always
11. Amir - Inconsistent, was dropped from team prior to WC due to poor performance. Character issues from past.
12. Shaheen Afridi - Too young and inexperienced.

Yes. If only for his own health and well-being. Looked close to tears on so many occasions recently.

There are two T20 & test championships scheduled before WC23 so a perfect time to groom a young captain. Hand it over to Babar across all formats. He had been very ambitious & hardworking throughout his life so far.

Sarfaraz should resign, there is no question about that.

Babar is the only automatic selection in all the formats, he should be handed over the captaincy.

Also PCB needs to make sure Babar gets to captain in domestic and PSL as well so that his learning continues.

A good batsman doesn't necessarily make a good captain - examples are Inzamam, Saeed Anwar, Tendulkar.

Those in favour of Babar being made to captain should realise that it might impact Babar's performance. At the moment, Pakistan are relying on his form to such an extent that a dip in form will be intolerable. It is better to leave Babar alone at this time.

Amir is also risky, this is because since his return he has been inconsistent. Tends to come good in big matches, but lacklustre in ordinary matches.

The only viable option if Sarfraz is to resign is to hand over reins to Hafeez. Hafeez somehow finds his way back into the team and performs well on flat tracks. Consistency is a problem, but being a captain may improve this. He is a decent spinner, keeps runs low if he is not picking wickets. Babar, Amir, Imad or whoever else can have an opportunity to grow until Hafeez hangs his boots. He might only have 1 or 2 years at best and until then a new leader can be groomed.

Keep keep different cpatians for ODI T20 and Tests. This way they can assess three individuals. Sarfaraz for T20 for one more year. Shadab for ODIs and babar for tests.

Hafeez is 38-39 and has been mediocre for sometime.

I understand what you are saying but maybe Babar can turn out to be like Williamson or Kohli with performances getting much better with responsibility.

Going back to Hafeez will be the most sinful act.

Leave S Malik, Hafeez Fakhar and Imam and look beyond.

Yes.

He does not merit a place in the playing XI based on performance.

And Rizwan deserves a chance ahead of him.

This alone should be enough to strip him of captancy.

Fakhar Zaman would be the best option as captain in my opinion.

Kohli, williamson, finch, morgan, holder say hi with their caps on.
Forget hafeez, we need to move forward with aggressive attitude & game plan if we are to catch up with big 3 any time soon.

Yes.

Not fit enough, doesn't bat well enough and doesn't captain well enough.

Babar is in such good form that I just can't take the risk at the moment. He is the only world class player in the team and the risk of him losing form is just too huge.

Keep his as a batsman and WK, not as captain. He should finish a half marathon under 90 minutes before he can be considered for captain.

He shouldnt just resign as skipper. He should actually retire.
He does not merit a place in the side and i will be frankly surprised if he continues on normally without resigning/retiring or being dropped.

Different teams for different formats is a good idea. The idea has been floating around since T20 became popular. But if PCB act on this now it will take a long time to implement.

I don't understand how people can support Shadab or Fakhar or Imad as captain.
All of them have issues with consistency.......they have not established themselves as an automatic selection yet...

yes, doesnt warrant a spot in the team anymore.

hasn't contributed enough with the bat (looks woefully inept against proper fast bowling, his hitting game has regressed, doesn't bat according to situation, etc), has been loose tactically, not placing slips at the right moment has been his biggest crime, and will be 36 in the next world cup, which given his fitness is already suspect would be too old for him.

same applies for tests too. management will change, keeping the same skipper in one or two formats will be counter productive.

Appoint Fakhar as captain for ODIs and T20. Azhar was the Test captain. Leave Babar alone and let him focus on his game rather than add more pressure on the only bright spot in Pakistan cricket.

Needs to go, if he has to be thrown out kicking and screaming, so be it. Can take Hafeez, Malik and Wahab with him.

There is no other player groomed for captaincy right now and picking a random player for captaincy will have similar chaos we had post WC-2007

Right now, I'd take Mickey Mouse over Sarfraz Ahmed as captain.

He seems shameless tbh. The way he disregards fitness, shouts at players and shows zero guts with the bat. Can’t believe he’s a u-19 wc winning captain.

Imam is the best choice as caption imo. He has a brain and is consistent with the bat. He wont be the first choice though but we dont have any other choice. Botom line is that we need a captain who leads from the front and takes responsibility. Imam has shown he has those qualities and will literally be leading the team from the front. Get rid of the old players for good. Stop going back to the seniors, they do not bring anything of value to the team.
Sarfaraz should go. Hafeez and Malik are expected to resign anyway.

No, we need to continue with stability. No need for drastic measures. Just replace Malik and Hafeez. Their time is up and their experience is no longer needed.

There are only 3 candidates for captaincy, Babar, Amir and Harris.

I think Harris should be given a go. He's 30 and has played cricket for a long time despite not being fully established in pak 11. Which i think he will be after a couple of good performances.

Barbar should be vice captain.

Amir can be captain of the T20 team.

Wahab Riaz? The guy has given it all this tournament.

I say give Babar 2 more years.

I back Harris - sarfaraz has been picking his brain in the last few games and been relying on Harris input

I dont think he should resign, its obvious though the burden of captaincy has affected his batting, being free from captaincy might enable him to concentrate on his batting.

Yes, Sarfaraz Ahmed should resign. I will make Babar Azam the captain & Haris Sohail the vice captain in ODIs.

Regarding Amir I will say, in this era, for a pacer to captain & play most if not all matches will be tough unless he exclusively plays one format (like Mashrafe). Because with pacers, you always have workload management issue & chance of injuries niggles etc.

No.
He is the best option

The useless coach should go

That's not true, yet. Pakistan still has a chance if they bat first - it's unlikely but in the mathematical realm of possibility. That said, it doesn't dilute that Sarfaraz has been awful and should resign.

If Sarfaraz is replaced the only option is Haris, he has the age factor with him given him a sense of seniority in terms of age which is unfortunately required in our culture. Making Babar or Shadab captain would be a disaster just like when Pakistan made Miandad the captain at 21.

I would say yes. He has to step aside from ODI and Test captaincy. I'd consider letting him captain T20 side until the World Cup T20. Although i'm leaning against.

Personally, I'd turn over the ODI/T20 captaincy to Imad along with Babar as VC. In the test side Azhar Ali as captain for 1-2 years and get Haris Sohail established as regular along with VC duties.

Sarfaraz is too unprofessional to be captain

Yup.

Can't be captain if you don't make the XI on merit. To add to that, Rizwan is young and hungry, and seems to be in top form.

Sometimes I feel for Sarfraz. And I will always love him for leading us to the CT triumph.

I believe Sarf should remain T20 captain for the next two WT20s. But for Tests and ODIs, his career should be over now.

Rizwan and Abid Ali are wickets keepers and much better batsmen. I do have a soft spot for Sarfraz since he looks like a very nice guy but it's so frustrating to have a captain like him who hides behind tailenders and puts in no effort to improve his batting and fitness.

As for the captaincy, give it to Babar since there is no other player that is a guaranteed selection.

Babar should be appointed skipper. It may elevate his performances further and he is the most consistent player in the team. Amir may have performed well in WC, but questions remain if he can maintain those performances.

Captains motivate you. Safraz is no Mr Motivator
Captains give you energy and they spread their positive vibes onto the team. Safraz has neither.
Captains lead from the front like all other captains in the World Cup - Safraz has hidden himself at no.6
Captains set attacking field placements when wicket falls. Safraz takes out your attacking bowler and places defensive placements allowing the opposition back in the match.
Captains give you a stern look when your team mate drops a catch. Safraz smiles.
Captains have a word to you if you continue to misfield or are not in the game. Safraz just stands behind the stump yawning.

Nah we don't want no captain like that thank you very much.

all this hate against sarfraz is unjustified. you are blaming one player for the team. its a team sport - yes he has faults, but what about the other 10 players?

maybe we should go back to misbah.

grass is always greener on the other side...

You want him to open?

Babar will fail like sachin and saeed, he is not a captaincy material.

Sarfraz shouldnt resign ifact inzi & coaches should go.

Imam. Wasim and babar have all been groomed this World Cup
The Welshy should get it

As for sarfraz his batting against India cost us the World Cup as dhoni has been copying him ever since

What’s his age
Cricinfo says 34. You add another 3 on a safe side, he is probably 37. But is super-fit. His bowling average isnt the greatest but I think it is worth a thought as a short term solution.

Sounds a terrible idea with the greatest of respect to you

Barely makes the team usually. Has never captained at any serious level nor has shown any leadership quality

You want him to open?

When Safraz first began his career as Pakistan player he was our regular opener and infact he did well because he is good at finding the gaps and rotating, he did well opening the innings, not quick clinical starts but batted very well at a decent tempo.

He should have been at no.4 and not no.6 would have made alot of difference if you see your captain leading from the front but he did neither, nor did he contribute apart from one score of 50.

A captain must make the team on merit as a good player. Sarfaraz doesn’t. The days of specialist captains are over. Welcome to the 21st Century.

He can't speak English being a captain of team you should be able to speak English at least 2,3 lines.
Imad and fakher are only options

This is straight forward. BABAR AZAM.

But knowing how well PCB likes to sow the seeds of drama, some mediocre player shall likely be made captain, instead of Babar.

He's not a terrible captain, he's just alright. Can't remember the last captain fans were actually happy with, everyone seems to be bad/make the same mistakes. Yes his record is as bad as Misbah's, but on the plus side he's doing fairly well in tournaments, winning the CT and pulling off three wins against stronger teams in a world cup isn't bad.

He's not too old, he might be a little unfit but apparently fit enough to pass the fitness test and as a wicketkeeper I guess it doesn't factor into his ground fielding as much, you can still be agile as a wicketkeeper even slightly overweight, more about reactions/decision making. He's performing in PSL where he's regularly captaining his team far into the final. And although been poor in form in ODIs last few years, has been batting out of position and averages over 40 this year courtesy of a near century vs England.

His fitness does affect his running between the wickets ability which is bad, and yes with his type of game he's wasted at 6, his inability to really hit as well hurts him. He also will be the only senior left in the team after Hafeez (and surely Malik) go. There are also doubts Rizwan is better, and lack of other captaincy options except for Imad perhaps.

It's a tough decision really, there's so many different pros and cons.

Think the best option might be to relieve Sarfraz as captain, make him vice captain and make Imad captain with Sarfraz playing a guiding role in helping Imad. And basically Sarfraz will be in the position of perform as a player or he'll be out (Rizwan might even be slotted into the team alongside). This will especially work if Sarfraz is sick of captaincy and wants to try and retain his place focusing as a captain.

I would probably get rid of some or all of the coaches too.

Babar just really isn't worth the risk. Virtually no captaincy experience, his batting could go down the drain with the new burden which we can not afford with our best batsman.

Sarfraz should be dropped from captaincy however he should still be in the team and bat at no 4. He is a grafter and I like that attitude in him.
Harris Sohail should take up the responsibilities as the new Captain of Pakistan.

Shohaib Malik will probably resign or dropped and Abid Ali should be inducted in his place.
Imad wasim can be made captain of T20 only.

Please leave Babar alone to concentrate on his batting.

I would like him to continue as ODI and T20 captain
He should step down from Test captaincy
With hafeez and malik out.Sarfraz can play at his position
Rizwan can be in team also . So we have 2 Wks in team

Yes he should be removed.
fakhar,asif,hassan,malik,hafeez should be dropped .
I want either Haris or Imad to be the captain.

Sarfraz should definitely be removed as captain. But if you look at his role, he is a wicket-keeping batsman. Maybe doing that along with captaincy is too much for him. I think Imad should be captain and Sarfraz should become an opening batsman along with Fakhar. That way we will be able go get the best out of him and not 50%.

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Sarfraz Ahmed (wk)
3. Babar Azam
4. Haris Sohail
5. Saud Shakeel
6. Imad Wasim (c)
7. Aamer Yamin
8. Shadab Khan
9. Mohammad Amir
10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Usman Shinwari
12. Junaid Khan
13. Haris Rauf
14. Zafar Gohar
15. Khushdil Shah

Sarfaraz Ahmed has no business being a captain. What exactly are his skills as a leader? None whatsoever. It's embarrassing to see what great captains we've had in the past, and then seeing this clown lead us.

Here are some of my biggest issues with him:

1. Totally Unfit
If this guy is your captain and looks like a potato, what example are you setting for younger players? There is something called a diet, which I'm almost certain PCB have advised its players to strictly follow. if he's more interested in Nihari and Gol Gappay and refuses to lead by example, then what more are you expecting? Why else do you think Hassan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Imam-ul-Haq were out smoking sheesha and eating fast food DURING the world cup?

2. Badtameez
Has anybody ever taught him how to speak properly? When he's on the pitch, he's always screaming at his own players like he's some field marshall, not to mention making that silly frustrated face of his. If this guy is going to loose his marbles every time Pakistan goes through a rough patch during a match, then he isn't a leader let alone a captain.

3. A Coward
When Babar Azam was bowled out versus South Africa and Pakistan was 222/4, I totally expected him to come out and lead us to victory. Instead this coward sat in the dressing room while sending out Imad Wasim first and then Wahab Riaz. He decided to come out when only 2 runs were needed to win. What an absolute coward.

4. Crying To The Media
He made a comment about how we should all support the team through tough times blah blah blah. It's only thing to support the team when they're playing 100% and just having bad luck. It's another when 5 of your players are out smoking sheesha at 2:00 am and eating fast food, while completely getting bamboozled on the pitch. The only reason we're not in the semi final right now is because of that pathetic display against West Indies. Those were 2 points we could have used.

And I love how he's now involving is wife about how she cried. Why is your wife in England to begin with? Almost every world cup team in any sport knows to keep family and friends away during these tournaments - it's been a practice since the 90s. And here he is bringing everyone from Karachi with him like it's some free vacation.

Please get rid of him.

His form and fitness suggests he should no longer be a part of this side. A non performing captain is worst thing in cricket for any side. Make Amir the captain he thrives under pressure and takes responsibility

With that awfuĺ technique where he crouches so low, almost to the level of stumps what future does he have as an opener? It might work in uae but he'll be a sitting duck in NZ Aus SA
