Lot of debate around their "revival" - but the fact is that every time they do well in the lead up to the World Cup, their chances of inclusion go up dramatically.

So should one or both be selected for the Pakistan squad for the World Cup?

Malik = biggest dud against pace bowlers.

Cannot last against 120kph+.

Taking him to AUS would be madness. He was our BIGGEST FAILURE in the World Cup 2019. Lost us matches single-handedly.

We started winning once he was dropped for Haris Sohail.

How can people even name Malik here? With a straight face?

I prefer Hafeez over Shoaib. But due to lack of batting talent both should be selected. Can't keep useless players like Asif Ali.

Two warhorses who would provide Pakistan with the cutting edge with their skill and experience.

If only,

Fakhar
Sharjeel
Babar
Hafeez
Malik
Umar/Kamran (wk)
Imad
Shadab
Shaheen
Rauf
Amir

I think atleast one of them will be there which is the reality of work done by past management in T20 format who tried and developed no one in the middle other than usual culprits and Hussain Talat (Which old management dropped themselves for Eng T20 early in the year) and inability of young batsmen to play spin.

Unless someone really shines in PSL in the middle order, we will see atleast one of these two in world T20.

Only hope for pak is if Fakhar sharjeel baba can get pak to 110/1 of 11 overs.

Absolute no hope in malik hafeez Ifty asif Imad.

Which WC? Both are stone solid for 2020 one and as it looks they’ll bat at 3 & 4. Yes, 2021 might be applicable for this thread - by that time, I am sure Hafeez will clear his action once more. It’s in India - with his tight spin & this time late order hitting from no. 5/6 - why not?

Based on what?

Just search up their T20I records. Hafeez averages 25.2, Malik averages 31.4. Hafeez' SR is 117, Malik's is 125. The disparity in their batting increases when looking at T20 cricket (non international) Malik averages 37.5, Hafeez averages 24.5. Shoaib can bowl if needed, whereas Hafeez is banned from bowling. Malik is a much better fielder. Safest pair of hands in the Pakistan team. Hafeez drops catches regularly.

That was a one-off T20 and they kept the same squad for it as the ODIs, probably didn't want to send players to England for just one match. Don't think he was really 'dropped'.

Who will win you matches then if not them? In Aus pattas Imad will not be half as effective as he is in Asia and I think we can all agree that on true pitches outbatting Babar Azam is no that big deal. Hafiz is still the most dynamic bat Pak has on flat pitches and Malik's experience will come in handy when you are down 5 wickets for 50 something runs.

I also thought that it might be the reason back then. However, we have a precedent under the same management before just like Khalid Latif, Sohail Tanvir and Amad Butt were selected in 2016 for one of T20 against Eng. The only reason I can think of is maybe management wanted to try and gel in the WC players and didnt want to disrupt the momentum.

Hafeez is a better player of pace than Malik so il take hafeez if I had only choice of 1 between the 2

Under Misbah, Hafeez will play in India too.

I still remember when Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan were in the team Hafeez was not able to make into the XI. Probably he was banned to not bowl then. I still remember as the UAE series followed the one off T20 match in England and Hafeez could not even play in the XI for those 4 matches. Misbah had retired and coach Arthur got a better captain than Azhar Ali.

Then the targeted sting operation happened during PSL 2017 and immediately in the next series in West Indies, they were replaced with Ahmed Shehzad and Kamran Akmal. This was the same series Fakhar was selected in the squad due to his PSL performance so to keep him out Akmal was selected and he was not given a debut against lower ranked team.

Malik and Hafeez have survived due to some external interference within the PCB or outside. Thre is a mafia behind them which is doing irreparable damage to Pakistan national team by keeping these players.

Some of your points are valid however Shoaib really struggles against pace and in Australia that will be a big factor. Pakistan will be making a mistake if they take Malik there.

I think both should play. Pakistan don't have many replacements for them. You need experience in Australia.

Hahahaha was waiting for this line all day.

Players are defended for their skills bt this duo is defended despite
Hafeez is a mental midget and will get out the first bowl if its moving, Malik can't play bounce, both have a horrid career against top 5 ranked teams,

BUT THEIT ARE'NT REPLACEMENTS as PCB has never replaced them or plucked those out due to some non-cricketing reasons who did replace them, and did pretty well.

Quick 25 runs in T20 by Hafeez at the right time can make a big difference.

Malik has totally failed in the last few ICC tournaments he has played . T20 2016, CT 17, 2019 World Cup .

Hafeez averages 20 in 3 T20 world cups with 1 50 . It’s embarrassing and shameful we keep going back to him.
They are experienced in failing on the big stage .

should ave played them both against aussies to get the true litmus test on their worth, at the moment, it doesnt matter anymore whether they play or not, we aint getting the worldcup where other teams are scoring 200+ and chasing them too, we (read team) are ever happy and excited at 140's and over the moon with 150's totals

Can’t believe it’s 2020 and these two are still (potentially) Pakistan’s no. 3 & 4, that too for an icc tournament.

Add S Tanvir, Umar/Kamran, S Butt, Shehzad in the list as well. Never know under Misbah they may feel at least 5 years more to play.

With Mickey and Inzi there were different options available. With Misbah as CS only Hafeez and Malik turn out to be the best options available at the moment.

Yes!

They are the first two names on the sheet for the 2026 T20 cup.

Hafeez to open the batting and bowling.

Malik at 4 and captain. Let’s make him coach too.

Personally neither of them they don't deserve to be in the team whatsoever. We should be looking towards T20 World Cup in Australia. These two will be walking wickets in Australia. The Bangladesh T20 series was a time to test out new young players.

Five T20 World Cups.

What use was their experience in the last World Cup? Absolutely nothing! Serial failures, who are officially aged 39 and 37 right now. And Hafeez cant even bowl any more.

In Australia both oldies will be a big failure, their attempted "sixes" will be caught in 30 yards circle and with their slowed reflex they will face a hard time facing fast and tall bowlers.

But traditionally , our preference has been keeping the old people ( and players) happy even at the cost of good showing at world cup.

So lets play both of them in T20 WC. World cup comes and goes, who cares, but giving a good farewell to the "legends" is more important.

Too soon to ask. Look at their form around the time the squad needs to be selected. Selection should be on merit.

Misbah and Merit??? Big no
Misbah and oldies? Yes
Misbah and experience Big yes

Pakistan should select these two for the WC squad but should only play them if Pakistan is up against India in the tournament...these two are like ATGs when they play against India but for rest of the matches these two should warm the bench

They will be in the T20 World Cup squad.

The selectors are too scared to drop them only a few months ahead of the tournament and they haven't really invested properly in replacements.

1.Babar Azam
2.Sharjeel Khan
3.Fakhar Zaman
4.Mohammad Hafeez
5.Kamran Akmal
6.Iftikhar Ahmed
7.Imad Wasim

Precisely this.

Let’s say for argument sake, one or both of these players make the team on merit, I would still be against their selections because it sets a bad precedent. Unfortunately, this practice of pleasing old men has caught fire over the last 10 years largely because of Misbah, who didn’t retire till his mid 40s even though he was a substandard batsman.

If the selections of Hafeez and Malik are warranted it says a lot more about Misbah’s phobia for younger players rather than the batting skills of the two oldies.

Hope Pakistan get knocked out early. Hopefully then we can shut the door on these cancer duos.

A quickfire 20-50. Converting 140s/150s to 180s. Forgot the CT final?

Or the recent T20?

Dream on , when was the last time Hafeez performed in Australia, NZL and South Africa, even during his younger days ? Now at 42, you're expecting a miracle from him :ms:))

I think its a master stroke of Misbah to hide his 2 trusted buddies Hafeez and Malik for Australia T20 series knowing that they will be failed and to cover up he didn't take them in SL squad as well. Now BD is the weakest in T20 format and Misbah brought them in the name of experience so they will play 2020 and 2021 T20 World Cups for sure and 2023 50 overs World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.

To be completely honest I don’t think it’s Misbah’s decision alone to have kept these two for this series. As much as I dislike saying this, all the clues we’ve seen from the press conferences seem to point to Babar having asked Misbah specifically for two senior players to help him prop up the middle order and about a repeat of Sri Lanka and Australia where Babar getting out would lead to a collapse from numbers 3 to 10. Misbah and Babar have both kept mentioning how Babar recommended both of them be there. This makes sense as well given Babar is a new captain and would benefit from the presence of seniors who can help him with on field decisions and that pressure doesn’t affect his batting.

Remember, Misbah specifically did not have Hafeez and Malik in his previous two squads. I don’t think he has a fetish for older players the way many people here are making him out to be. He very specifically tried out a lot of youngsters over these three series, and that seems to have been his first preference for the squad. Even now, the squad is basically made up of youngsters with Ahsan Ali, Babar, Shaheen, Hasnain, Musa, Amad Butt, Musa, Khushdil, Shadab, and Haris Rauf. All of these people are under 25-26. Meanwhile Rizwan and Iftikhar are new to the team. Misbah is making way more changes to the squad to include youngsters than people are giving him credit for. Yes, he’s made some horrible decisions with Irfan and Imran Sr being recalled, but I respect the way he has invested in Naseem and the way he’s giving similar opportunities to some others to find their places.

I honestly don’t know what people here want. You want a squad of nine 20 year olds and two debutants to go out and win on their own? Our middle order is the weakest of any team and we need experienced bats for everyone else to play around. Just Babar alone won’t be enough and Babar is probably the person who recognized this and asked Misbah accordingly to include Hafeez and Malik.

I also don’t think they intend on taking either of them to the world t20. To me, this looks like a very stop gap solution to help the team start winning again against minnow sides to get its mojo back. In two months time, PSL will be over and we’ll have some new names in contention who can provide us with the explosive middle order we need. This is another thing both Misbah and Babar have kept referring to — even after making 5 different changes to the squad, they keep mentioning that PSL will “make things more clear” i.e. they’re still looking to make more changes and are clearly not happy with this combination.

If you look at the parts of this combination they might want to change, the only possible things they could be looking at are:
- the opener beside Babar
- the wicket keeper
- players to replace Hafeez and/or Malik

Our bowling attack is settled and they’re not going to drop Shadab as he makes up for subpar bowling with amazing fielding which guarantees 1-2 runouts per game.

What this means is that Misbah and Babar have the same worries that a lot of people here on PP have. They’re not blind and recognize the same issues with the squads. But it’s important for their plans for Pakistan to start winning again, and they executed that plan successfully against Bangladesh while also giving Ahsan Ali and Rauf their debuts and were probably going to give Amad his debut too in the third test. They’re not going to debut 4 people in the same match.

Sabar ka phal meetha hota hai. I don’t see Hafeez and Malik lasting too long. Malik will give way first for Khushdil. Hafeez will give way next once they find a good number 3 in PSL.

Thunderbolt14 You can ignore Shafi and moghul in this regard.

What they always fail to mention is, it was Mickey Arthur's formula to actually play Malik, Hafeez and Sarfraz in T20s. That's how he got that fake #1 ranking, with these 3 people. First thing Misbah did was kick out all these 3.

These same people started an outcry after Misbah dropped them and PAK immediately lost the T20 series. Why, because these people want instant results. When experience goes out, you do lose. They weren't happy at Misbah dropping these 3 oldies and started attacking him for losing the T20 series.

Now, Misbah is using the Mickey Arthur strategy of playing Malik/Hafeez, and they still have an issue - even though they loved Mickey Arthur for playing Malik/Hafeez/Sarfraz all those years!

Mickey Arthur was not chief selector, Inzamam ul Haq was. If Mickey Arthur had power than he would'nt have let Hafeez in the side as he was'nt in his plans. He did not put Hafeez in the team XI in Zimbabwe and later removedhimfrom squad after he started to affect team unity. It was Inzamam ul Haq who brought Hafeez after one century in domestic for the Australian Tour he was brought in forcefullyeven though
Hafeez was'nt in the initial squad .Same Inzamam whodidnot select a single QEA performing batsman inthis 4 year stint. Arthur sent Malik back from New Zealand after he got hit in the head.Who selected him back?
Arthur became coach when that joke Azhar Ali was captain. Mickey also had nothing to do with Sarfaraz captaincy.
Hopefull you'll be happy once Pakistan drops to fake 8th ranking under Misbah.

Rofl Misbah dropped them or saved them from Australian tour. The only formula that is working is from unnamed PCB mafia that is backing Malik and Hafeez from behind with Misbah as the frontman.

In case you missed the news, Mickey Arthur is no longer coach of Pakistan so not sure why he's being brought up.

Firstly Mickey never had dictator like powers as Misbah does as a head coach, chief selector, PSL franchise coach and batting coach all in one.

Secondly, alright let's say for argument that Mickey's tenure was a disaster. So why don't Misbah and Waqar, these supposed legendary ex-cricketers with a wealth of experience and knowledge, learn from Mickey's supposed mistakes ?

You're complaining the previous management didn't groom any young batsmen, well what's stopping them now ? We're still 10 months away from the World Cup. Instead Misbah recalled Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, in the year 2020 and despite their shocking records in SENA, for a frickin' home series vs Bangladesh B. What an opportunity wasted.

I never said Mickey's whole tenure was a disaster. In LOIs it was definitely progressive to an extent but definitely could have achieved a lot more considering talent which came through during his time and PSL being available as a litmus test for the temperament. Asia Cup and ODIs in NZ were utter disasters without much planing in place. Yes he did smooth transition for some young players to international set up.

Test cricket on the other hand post MisYou was a complete disaster and Pak underachieved big time, loosing series to Srl and NZ was criminal considering the selections and strategies in place.

Yes there are 10 months remaining but I dont think its enough to develop a player unless he is a supreme talent. If some upcoming players perform in PSL and show temperament then that would show that they are half way there an can be worked upon to develop into something useful.

You would pick Hafeez that too in Australia, to do what ?

As I said, I would want a young middle order batsman to get in the team, but I don't see anyone. So Hafeez fits in perfectly in this situation, he's a stroke player. I would play him in no.4 or 5 though and tell me to hit. He is pretty good in that role actually.

Misbah-ul-Haq speaking to the press

“Seniors can continue with the team. Wahab and Hafeez performed here and if we look at the last couple of years in terms of avg and SR, Shoaib Malik has done very well as well according to the demands of modern day cricket. We have to find the right balance. All these players are in consideration and when the World Cup comes, we’ll see who is in our best 15. They can be senior or junior. We want to try different combinations right now and see what happens. I think it’s wrong to write off players saying he’s 37, 38, he won’t play there, etc., it’s not fair on the player and the team. We will try these players and we’ll get a good picture before the WC about the best combination.

If Hafeez continues to perform he has to be selected. If Malik doesn't improve his form he shouldn't make it.

It's all dependent on form.

Well that is a very hard question to answer, but will try to answer in as much depth as possible.

NO.

bump.

its the experience of hafeez that is helping us here.

After looking at the current batting performance, Shoaib Malik merit a place.

Haider Ali should also be there, Abdullah Shafique need more time.

Misbah is getting a chastening lesson in this series. The batting performances have shown how much the side needs Malik. When he would score 20 to 30 at a strike-rate of 147 people would take his presence for granted. Now when Abdullah Shafique can't buy a run and Khushdil is struggling to crack a strike-rate of 100 we are reminded what he brought to the team.

Listen, Pakistani’s might not thank me but get the contract out, put it on the table. Let him sign it. Let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he's done since he's come in. Hafeez is at the wheel, man. He's doing it. He's doing his thing.

Yes we had great success with Malik and we need him back. The guy is awful and has been for a decade.

At this point I would even mind Malik in the t20 sqaud

It seems like Pak needs two senior batsman in the middle

I don't know why you're being sarcastic because yes, we had great success with Malik. I would characterize rising to the top of the T20I ranking as success, would you?

Also, your assertion that Malik has been awful for a decade has no basis in reality. Here are Malik's numbers in T20Is 2016 onwards:

2016 - average: 52.85, SR: 131
2017 - average: 45.50, SR: 144
2018 - average: 41.00, SR: 164
2019 - average: 24.33, SR: 143 (3 innings)
2020 - average: 72, SR 128 (2 innings)

His stats show that he has only scored runs quickly over the last few years but also finished off innings, and remaining unbeaten alot of the time. He earns a place in the side based on merit.

Hafeez needs to bowl - or he loses his edge.

Undoubtedly Malik should be there too.

However the most obvious selection blunder is the omission of Haris Sohail. Why the heck is not playing?? He didn't play in the Shaheens game either and so what on earth is going on?

Might need to add, recall a few others tbh

Malik
Amir
Azam Khan
Umar Akmal
Sharjeel Khan
Fakhar Zaman

I guess the PTI way wasn't working. So we brought back the NWO way (PMLN way)

Don't care about the stats because we saw the tripe over a decade. In no other country would such a mediocre player got so long to fail. A guy that was scared of 82mph should not be playing.

If you're not even willing to admit objective facts and are more interested in projecting your biases then your opinion has no credibility in my eyes.

I have seen his dross for over a decade. An awful player that should have been dropped a decade ago. Its the reason we never go anywhere and then we moan we have fallen behind. Just answer me a simple question, can he play any bowlers over 82mph?

Maybe you haven't been watching as closely for the last 5 years because he had quite a career resurgence.

And judging by the fact that he had a an average strike-rate of 150+ between 2017 and 2018, in which he played something like 30 matches I would say yes, he can play bowlers over 82 mph. Just because you saw him fail a number of times against fast-bowlers back in 2013 doesn't mean he is always doomed to fail against fast-bowlers.

He is an awful player at the international level. He can't handle any pace and struggled with it as far back as 2004. As soon as a young player fails we panic and drop him and that means we go backwards, and then the usual bring back Malik calls start. Its the reason we never go anywhere. Just imagine Malik against the likes of Archer, Rabada,Bumrah, Starc etc

Talking to you is akin to banging ones head against a brick wall. Newsflash: it isn't 2004 anymore. Have you seen his numbers since 2016? Those are actual numbers based on actual performances against actual teams. Teams that had fast-bowlers in their side against whom he batted.
