Sri lanka cant hold the asia cup looking at their economic situation.

Do you think Pakistan should get the rights? Let me remind you that champions trophy hosting rights are with Pakistan, and while we had a succesful Australian tour, scheduling the Asia Cup would help get the confidencenof other nations aswell.

Should Pakistan be able to host Asia Cup to make sure champions trophy is held here?

The Asia Cup 2022 is likely to be moved from Sri Lanka to some other country due to the current political and financial turmoil in the island country.

Sri Lanka is going through the worst economic crisis of its history as commodity prices skyrocket and an emergency is imposed by President Rajapaksha.

According to details, the Asia Cup 2022 has already been postponed twice.

Earleir, the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup was announced to be held in Sri Lanka between August 27 and September 11. The dates and the host were announced after an AGM was held between the member countries.

All five Test teams including Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh were set to feature in the tournament, with one more team to join them after a qualifying tournament which was scheduled to be held from August 20.

However, the decision to change the venue will be made at the quarterly meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC) scheduled to take place in Dubai on Sunday.

Chairman Pakitan Cricket Board Ramiz Raja and Chief Executive Faisla Hussain will attend the ICC meeting.

Sri Lanka’s central bank doubled its key interest rates on Friday, raising each by an unprecedented 700 basis points to tame inflation that has soared due to crippling shortages of basic goods driven by a devastating economic crisis.

Street protests have been held nearly non-stop for more than a month, despite a five-day state of emergency and a two-day curfew.

Lol.

Will most likely be shifted to UAE or Bangladesh. I'd personally prefer Bangladesh. 2012,14 and 16 were wonderful.

After successfully hosting Australia, there should be no excuses from other Asian countries to not visit Pakistan now. :inti

And the current political situation in Pakistan won't be a problem ?

What has that go to do with the Asia Cup lol? Some people are always looking for excuses to not tour Pakistan. They have successfully hosted Australia just recently. This is good enough to convince other countries now. :inti

Pakistan should host it if Sri Lanka is not available. Pakistan haven't hosted it in a long time.

I personally would love to see Asia Cup in a random Asian country (Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong etc.).

If it is moved to Pakistan, India will make a big deal about not touring. And honestly I am not interested in seeing episode 987769709 of this boring drama between the two boards. I simply don't care about the politics. I watch cricket to escape politics, not the other way around.

Just shift the tournament to Bangladesh and be done with it. I would have preferred UAE but playing cricket in UAE in the month of July is absolute madness.

It could be a good gesture from India to suggest moving to Pakistan, especially to welcome the incoming new PM of Pakistan.

I doubt whether it will happen.

Most likely it will be UAE. Though I wouldn't mind if its held somewhere exotic. Nepal or Malaysia.

I rather it shifts to Bangladesh. They did a fine job with all the recent Asia cups that were hosted there. No one has time for IND-PAK political drama. Am so tired of it ...

Also would like to see NEPAL feature in the Asia cup. They sure love their cricket in Nepal. UAE is just full of IND/PAK players. We already have the premier teams featuring, no need for a second-team lol.

How about getting rid of the Asia Cup for good. a Very unsessecary and useless tournament,

Does Asia Cup has any meaning any worth even a ClT20 was more interesting than this Mickley mouse Asia Cup why not just bin it

More than Asia Cup there should be an Australasia Cup atleast it will have some context and exciting games

You would think hosting the Asia Cup with India playing Pakistan etc will help Sri Lanka massively from a financial pov.

How about getting rid of the Asia Cup for good. a Very unsessecary and useless tournament,

Cricket is followed seriously only in the sub continent. Why would you want to take away one tournament that caters specifically to the biggest sub regional market that contributes 95% of the sport's fanbase?

I really hope GOI does not make a mistake to send Indian team to Pakistan if this happens.
If it means skipping Asia cup so be it.

If India wants to open relationship with new Pak Govt then BCCI would push for Pakistan to hold this and even send their team to play here.

Hopefully India or Bangladesh if Pakistan situation doesn’t improve. I am ok with Pakistan hosting it if things are safe.

No UAE/ Dubai/ Sharjah please. It’s an eyesore to watch matches in those stadiums. Even a close match looks boring.

Pakistan seems difficult, although not as difficult as when IK was around but maybe with new regime in Pakistan, if Indo-Pak talks resume.

Cricket might be the first thing to resume as goodwill gesture. Without political go-ahead we all know this isn't going to happen.

Why are you jumping up and down like it’s a wedding when India play Pakistan in world cups?

I want India to boycott that as well and give away points. But that’s not gonna happen so might as well watch a game of cricket like any other game of India.

As a fan who hasn't grown up watching Pakistan-India matches all the time, I would prefer it stays for simply that reason.

I think the biggest problem with Asia cup is simply teams not being good enough. India is top tier and Pakistan are quite behind them. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka/Bangladesh/Afghanistan are a tier below Pakistan so it makes for a boring and usually one sided tournament.

If Sri Lanka was Sri Lanka of its glory days and Pakistan were a slightly better side along with the other nations, it would make for a more interesting & compelling Asia cup. It doesn't help whenever Asia cup is held in UAE where there aren't really fans outside of India/Pakistan match & horrific pitches.

I think we should be worrying about our own economic situation and not Sri Lanka's. Holding it will only help SLC financially.

waste of time competition, need to get rid of it.

Sri Lanka is facing a shortage even of essential commodities like fuel and medicines.

They are not in a position to host anything.

Looks like BCCI will decide where to Host the next Asia Cup soon.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah to host Sri Lanka Cricket office-bearers in IPL 2022 final on May 29; Asia Cup to be discussed

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah will be hosting Sri Lanka Cricket office-bearers in IPL 2022 final on May 29.

"I will be hosting Sri Lanka Cricket Office Bearers in the IPL final on May 29th and will further assess the situation," Jay Shah told news agency ANI.

Sri Lanka is set to organise the Asia Cup from August 27 to September 11 this year, which was already been postponed twice due to COVID-19.

The economic situation in the Island nation is continuously deteriorating. There is a shortage of food and drink in the country and in such a situation common life has been badly affected. Organising a cricket tournament in such circumstances seems far-fetched.

I wouldnt mind if the asia cup money goes to sri lanka while it is hosted in Pakistan. We deduct cost.

This way three things get pulled off

Pakistan will give more attention and viewership as we just in the recent australia series. This will result in more money to be made, and srilanka can take the profits. For pakistan, as the host of the next CT, they want to make sure that the world views them as a place that cna be toured and eith this Asia cup it can be pulled off.

Asia cup is seen as a dead tournament due to the poor marketing of ACC board. But pakistan hosting it can make things spicy

The only reason why there's hate for the Asia Cup is because Pakistan have performed dismally in the last two editions.

It's the only regional tournament in cricket and a good concept which unfortunately is victim to the cramped international schedule, and Indo-Pak geopolitical rivalry.

Asia Cup 2022: Contrary to Jay Shah’s statement, Sri Lanka Cricket Sec claims ‘Asia Cup 100% will take place in Sri Lanka’

Asia Cup 2022 – Asia Cup in Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has contradicted Asian Cricket Council’s President Jay Shah’s statement. Shah had last week said that the final decision on venue of Asia Cup will only be taken after IPL 2022 Finals. But SLC’s Secretary Mohan De Silva has contradicted that. According to De Silva, Asia Cup 100% will take place in Sri Lanka and there is no going back on that.

“Asia Cup T-20 cricket tournament will be held from August 27 to September 11th in Sri Lanka and that is final. SLC officials are in a very positive mood to conduct this Asia Cup with the support of the Asian Cricket Council. No one is doing any rethink and there is no going back on that”, Mohan De Silva told InsideSport from Colombo.

Asia Cup in Sri Lanka – When is Asia Cup? According to De Silva, tournament will be played from August 27th to September 11th.

It is worth noting that ACC President & BCCI Sec Jay Shah last week had said that the situation of hosting the event in Sri Lanka, will be assessed on the day of the final of IPL 2022.

“I had a detailed discussion with the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket on the situation in the country and its impact on cricket. SLC is hopeful of delivering a safe and successful Men’s Asia Cup. The office-bearers of SLC will be hosted at IPL 2022 final on May 29, and we will further assess the situation,” Jay Shah told ANI.

Why Asia Cup in Sri Lanka is doubtful?

- The Sri Lankan economy has been in a free-fall since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Covid has affected the tourism, the biggest contributor to Sri Lanka’s GDP.

- Sri Lanka is also facing a foreign exchange shortage, which has affected its capacity to import food and fuel.

- The shortage of essential goods forced Sri Lanka to seek assistance from friendly countries.

- The economic situation has led to huge protests with demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

- Earlier, in a special address to the nation on Monday, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa requested people to remain patient and stop taking to the streets in order to enable the government to resolve the situation.

Wish Pakistan gets a chance to host this. However with the current uncertainty in PCB leadership, don't see us effectively being able to lobby a case

Bangladesh Is Now Being Preferred To Host The Tournament

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has emerged as the favored candidate to host the upcoming Asia Cup, which was set to take place in Sri Lanka from August 27 to September 11.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has warned the people of the Emerald Isle to prepare for their “worst-ever two months in their lives” as a result of a lack of food supply and a high inflationary climate brought on by the deep economic crisis.

Because of the geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, neither country can host the T20 tournament, leaving the UAE and Oman as the only options. However, because of the extreme heat in the Middle East, matches cannot be played there.

According to a website, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) believes Bangladesh is the ideal location for the tournament, but no final decision has been made. Despite the Sri Lanka Cricket authorities’ best attempts to persuade ACC President Jay Shah to keep the tournament in the island nation, the ACC is considering another option.

“Bangladesh is just an option at the moment and the ACC is observing the Sri Lanka situation before coming to a final decision. UAE is definitely not an option to host matches in late August and early September,” an official in the know of things told the website.

Cricket Australia is also assessing the situation before making a final decision on their scheduled visit of Sri Lanka, which includes three Twenty20 Internationals, three One-Day Internationals, and two Test matches. Australian players competing in the IPL will go straight to Sri Lanka before the opening T20I of the series on June 8. Despite the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) urging the Australians to reconsider their plans to tour Sri Lanka, Cricket Australia firmly supported the tour. They’ve run out of options now that a lot of water has flowed under the bridge.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is expected to propose to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to shift the Asia Cup, scheduled from August 27 to September 11, out of the country as the island is currently reeling under the economic and political crisis.

The SLC will convey the request to ACC president Jay Shah during their meeting on the sidelines of the IPL final on Sunday. A few members of the cricket board including its president Shammi Silva, are already in Ahmedabad for the summit clash.

It has been learnt that many multiple members of the ACC have said a final decision has not yet been taken but did not rule out the possibility.

"I will have to check, the final decision has not yet been taken," a non-SLC member of the ACC told Cricbuzz.

Notably, Shah had previously mentioned that he has been in touch with the SLC officials. Clarity on the whole matter is expected in the next few days.

The general impression is that the tournament cannot be staged in Lanka in the current scenario and in that case United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bangladesh are the potential alternatives with the former tipped to be the frontrunner. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and UAE will be taking part in the tournament.

However, SLC has no plans to cancel or move its bilateral engagements against Australia and Pakistan. The Australian team will be landing in the island nation in a few days' time.

As per reports

ISLAMABAD: Weeks after the economic uncertainty and political turmoil in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan cricket board is now eager to start the Asia Cup T20 Cricket on the new dates — August 24 to September 7, 2022 — and has sought the agreement of participating countries, The News reported Monday.

The 18th Asia Cup, which had been postponed twice previously, is finally set to begin on August 24 in Sri Lanka, with the continent's six teams competing for the title.

The ACC has been compelled to evaluate a variety of possibilities, including schedule changes, due to recent economic uncertainty in Sri Lanka, the event's host country.

The Asia Cup, which will feature Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and one of the qualifiers, might now start on August 24.

The tournament's final will take place On September 7.

"Adjustments in the dates are made following a request received by the SL Board from a couple of participating teams, including Pakistan, on the possible clash of international fixtures. Pakistan are to host England for seven T20 Internationals in the latter part of September. If Asia Cup goes ahead on the new dates of August 24 and ends on September 7, it would be perfect from Pakistan’s perspective as the team will be back home well in time for the start of the T20 series against England," as per sources

India won the latest edition of the competition, which alternates between ODI and T20 cricket forms. The 2020 edition has been postponed because to the COVID-19 epidemic. The 2020 edition was intended to be held in Sri Lanka, however the pandemic forced the event to be postponed to 2021, then 2022.

Pakistan has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2023 Asia Cup, which was initially scheduled to take place in 2022. A qualifier will join the top teams for the Asia Cup, in addition to the top five cricket-playing Asian countries.

Pakistani cricketers have a busy schedule ahead of the T20 World Cup, which will be contested in Australia in November. The national cricket squad will compete in the Asia Cup T20 from September 1 to 17.

The England series is set to begin on or around September 15th. Pakistan and England will play seven Twenty20 matches, which might last until the first week of October. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and hosts New Zealand will compete in the tri-series ahead of the World Cup T20 in Australia.

"If you ask me, it would have been good if the whole tournament would have been held in Pakistan, but unfortunately, nothing can be done about it," Babar said at the pre-tournament media conference ahead of the opening match against minnows Nepal.
