Should wides in LOI cricket also be penalized with free hits (like no balls)?

Just a suggestion but possibly worth exploring?

Not sure why no balls get more heavily penalized with a free hit and an extra run whereas wides only get a run and and an extra ball.

Surely this will entire bowlers to focus on accuracy and control whilst batsman can be assured of more big hitting opportunities.

Rather than another rule penalizing the bowler, we should come up with a rule to penalize batsmen. Why should bowlers be the one to suffer all the time?

I suggest a new rule to help bowlers.

Any batsman who steps out of the crease before the bowler has completed his bowling action, should be penalized 2 runs and one delivery reduced from the bowler's over

Make it happen! :inti

You want cricket shuld die permanently...already soo much harsh on bowlers like feild ristriction....if wide ball also treat as free hit..then bowler will not bowl freely with freedom

What? Free hit is an incredibly stupid idea, even in the case of no balls. Unless someone bowls a huge beamer, i don't see the bloody point of free hits.

Free hits have contributed to making the balance between bat and ball one sided. I strongly dislike this rule. I wish they eliminated it.

No. I'm fine with free hits off no balls because no balls should be easier to prevent happening but wides are bound to happen.

So that the bowlers fear going even marginally wayward and bowl only hit-me deliveries close to the wicket?

Or how about if a batsman conceded a maiden over - then 5 runs are automatically deducted from the total?

MMHS what do you think? :riaz

I don't think Free hit should exists at all, even for NO balls, let alone imposing for wide. Bowler is already penalized enough - can't get batsman out, but batsman can hit at will and now the run will be added with NO (that's 1+ up to 6). On top of that, bowler will have to re-bowl that ball.

If they are to extend that joke, then better is to give full over free hit - you bowl a no ball, rest of the over ......

One of the most Dumbest suggestions iv heard regarding rule changes. We have a game dominated by batsmen already, everything in favour of batsmen free hit is a stupid rule! Why dont we penalize the batsman, they cannot come out the crease at all and if they do bowlers should get a free ball which cannot go for any runs at all and the batsman has to play with one hand.

Good answer. :warnerRuthless.

Sure. Make a format which is already too much in the favour of batsmen and make it even more batting friendly.

While we are at it, make a new rule according to which everytime the ball touches the bat, it should be declared a six.

Oh fantastic let's distort the balance between the bat and ball to new profound levels. Just brilliant. You know what give this POTW.

What?? One should commend the batsman for being brave. Also it would not be so productive to step out before the ball is bowled and allow the bowler to change the line and length at the last minute. There was a debate not too long ago about switch hits being unfair for bowlers but nothing changed

I don't think so, sometimes wides are open to interpretation and it can go either way. Just stick with free hits for no balls.

Nobody intentionally bowls wides or noballs, yet the bowlers are penalized anyway. What happens when the ball goes off the edge to a part of the stadium where the batsman did not intend? Is the batsman penalized? No! The game of cricket in its current form heavily favors the batsman. Let us introduce ways to penalize the batsman so the number of 300s and 400s that are common today (and boring) are brought down.
