It's quite evident that Yasir Shah has lost his zip ever since the 1st Test in New Zealand started and for the last four test matches, he has practically been a non existing contributor in the team.

I am a firm believer in the fact that no player, no matter how big a name he is, should be a free loader in the XI and for this simple reason I guess it is now time for us to 'rest' Yasir for the deciding game in Sydney.

Asghar is there with the squad and the sole reason for his inclusion, barring an injury was that if Yasir looses his penetration then we can swap the latter with the former for a game or two, if need be.

I think Asghar should be seriously considered for the last test - What do you guys think ??

Moderators can we please have a poll on this !! Thank You !!

ahmedwaqas92 I dont think he is fully fit with his back injury

I highly doubt that it's a fitness issue. The new management under Micky Arthur is quite strict on the latter and these days they don't even play anyone who carries a niggle, let alone a full injury. I believe that it's a form issue and Yasir is just going through a bad / lean patch.

The world is not going to end if we drop Yasir for a game or two. Even the best cricketers go through lean patches and are dropped to help them regain their rhythm and form. It has even happened to the likes of Wasim Akram / Javed Miandad / Imran Khan.

He should be rested until Misbah retired. Misbah will kill his career anyway.

Yess i have no problem if they drop him but i know back injury doesnt recover quickly because i have litle bit of back problem myself it is one of the worst pain in your body.

Asghar and Yasir should both play in the next match. The SCG aids spin and Wahab will get reverse I guess. So it should be Aaamir,Wahab,Yasir,Asghar.

I would want both Yasir and Ashgar to play the match. Yasir needs to attack and Ashgar could hold up one end.

Nope, no need to rest him. Play an additional spinner.

This is the key issue - a captain who is illiterate in Aussie conditions - just as Alastair Cook is clueless in India with his 4 quicks/2 spinners nonsense.

Yasir Shah would be made much more effective at Sydney if only Misbah would drop himself - as he should on form grounds like Mike Denness in 74/75 - and Sarfraz could take over as a more aggressive skipper.

Misbah 'injured' before that, please.

Watching the boys bowl with this field is like a stab in the chest.

What's ur prediction of Sydney wicket?

Can someone pull out the Spin vs Pace Stats for SCG in the last five years ??

Would give us a better picture of whether the conditions and the track suits us to play an out of form yasir.

Some posters are even considering 2 spinners.

What are the relevant numbers for different type of bowlers on the wicket ???

Stats please!!

Whoever expected Yasir Shah to run through the Aussies in Australia and adopt the UAE approach needs to be held accountable.

With Misbah as captain you can select Warne and Murali and still the opposition will score 500.

However I agree Yasir didn't seem his penetrative self. It was a master stroke by Inzi and co to not select an offie against a team that has 6 left handers. Well done to the revolutionary selector. Mashallah boys played well. Perhaps Babar could have been tried as he used to bowl handy off spin during his u19 days, but with Misbah at the helm it is very unlikely that a youngster will get any sort of precedence or confidence.

Throwing Asghar in the deep end would be unfair to him and as a parting gift Misbah would end another promising youngster's career. It is better if we keep faith in Yasir and hope he performs in the Sydney test.

Which off-spinner would you select? Hafeez?

SCG has historically been one of the more spin-friendly grounds in Australia.

But the recent stats don't paint a pretty picture. Pacers averaging 35 and spinners 49 in the last 5 years.

Dont think there are any off spinners of note in Pakistan. Iftikhar Ahmed was selected for the England tour, why was he discarded so quickly?

Isn't it the selectors job to identify and develop talent? We have been lacking in an offie since the Ajmal/Hafeez days and the team that Inzi selected had Yasir and Nawaz who both spin it the same way and then as a backup he selected Asghar who also spins it the same way. Wow. You cannot be this illogical even if you purposefully tried. Well done Inzi. Apkay liyay ikhees toppon ki salami.

And no I wouldn't select Hafeez

There are barely any off-spinners playing in the QeA Trophy.

Tahir Khan probably fared best of the offies... he made his FC debut in 1999 and is allegedly 35 years old.

Raza-ul-Hasan was next, has played 8 FC matches in total - pretty mediocre when I saw him bowling.

Adnan Rasool has had problems with his action.

These three are the only ones who have actually played a few matches. The likes of Nasir Awais who have been mentioned on PP are nowhere in the picture.

Both bowl same way

Of anything we need someone who bowls different angle

He didn't bowl enough overs to be judged. He got the wicket of Anderson in the 4th test, looked like more than a useful part timer option.

Lol that was a wicket of Anderson and even that had luck

He is not even a club level bowler

Arshad Khan is in Australia if I'm not wrong

Is he the same bloke that used to play in the Early 2000s......Would be the most hilarious troll by PCB if they somehow bring him back for the last year :)))

Yasir has been exposed overseas but he is still the most capable in the bowling attack to take wickets.

So clueless that he won a test series there with two spinners..... yes I know they were much better spinners then.

I knew you'd catch me on that! :)

Mind you, I'm not sure that Cook understood until this month that not only Swann but also KP and Monty were irreplaceable.

He's a terrific batsman, but a very mediocre skipper who has allowed Andrew Strauss to settle scores at the expense of the team's performance.

Eight Test defeats in a calendar year. It's astonishing.

And six last year too! We have lost 14 Tests in a year and a half

It is.

Only in Pakistan is everyone dropped the moment they have two bad games.

And it will be the end of the world, because it will dent his confidence and have other knock on effects.

Sydney is possibly the closest wicket we will get to a subcontinent pitch. Yasir has to play.

Yup, first kiwis and now aussies have exposed yasir. Sad really sad.
He was not effective in England either, apart from in the first test.

He needs those low and slow turners in UAE where it skids on and he gets lots of lbw shouts. Elsewhere the ball sits up more and passes over the sticks, so he should push his length up.

Don't forget Prior, and Bell who got a ton to deny India in the final test. Our batting is rubbish now. They can smash quick tons in England and SA but are expose on turners, which they never see in the CC. I hoped that Root would play the KP role in the last series and he got 500 runs without ever going big.

Anderson and Broad have papered over cracks like Walshand Ambrose did for WI. But now they are picking up injuries.

Everybody is making out that this is a sudden thing and he will come back to form, it isn't. I was worried by his bowling even when he was taking wickets, it goes back to a basic problem of no spin. Yasir is small guy and doesn't have big fingers and what I noticed was that his fingers are too far apart on the seam, which means that the ball is essentially slipping out. If anyone knows him @Saj, could they ask him to bring the 2 fingers on the seam closer together. My son had similar problems and he did spin the ball more after he tried this( but he still just as inaccurate).

I have no problem with a team including:

1 Cook
2 Hameed
3 Jennings
4 Root
5 Bairstow
6 Stokes
7 Buttler (wk)
8 Ali
9 Woakes
10 Broad
11 Finn

.......to win the Ashes.

The problem list for me is:

1) we failed to recognise that skilled spinners and batters against spin are needed in Asia. KP and Panesar should have been retiring now, after a 2-2 draw in India.

2) we need Jonny at 5 - we should actually give the gloves to Buttler as there is no viable alternative Number 5.

3) Trevor Bayliss is a typical modern Aussie coach who doesn't get that ODI players and Test players are different.

4) Bayliss is also far less familiar with domestic players than Mickey Arthur is in Pakistan.

I wish that Alec Stewart had got that job (or even Michael Vaughan) and that Jason Gillespie had been appointed coach. Gillespie knows all the domestic players that Bayliss does not.

Junaids stop creating hypothetical scenarios,KP is not the same batsman and neither is Monty great spinner without Swan telling him what to do also if you remember England did win it fair and square but we had lot of passengers in that Indian team so there is no gurantee England would had performed well with selection of Kp and Monty.

Also our pacers were performing better than urs that should be signs as well,Shami was doing well and Ishant and Umesh bowling good odd spells unlike Anderson,Wokes,Ball.

I'm afraid Jennings is going to get exposed soon against the pacers. Doesn't move his feet much.

Yeah, I agree with all your points actually.

But I still think that a veteran KP would have done well, and as always Monty would bowl like in every previous Test he ever played.

For someone who hangs amidst the 'cricket crowd' you really don't know about Monty and his situation ?? The post will get deleted due to certain infringements if I post the reasoning here but I would assume you should know what I am referring to !!

Do you Junaids bhai ?

Pakistani fans loose patience very very quickly.
and players get their vote back with performance too.
as if Asghar suddenly ll get 10 fer and level the series for Pak.

He is an average player. The hundred on debut was an aberration. Don't see him cementing his place in any format in the future.

Hameed is the real deal, but England need to unearth another quality specialist batsman.

Agreed. They are a specialist batsman short and their over reliance on the all rounders (Moeen, Stokes) in batting has been exposed a lot in the last year or so. Having too many all rounders can be a problem as well if you don't have too many specialists.

Personally I would like them to field a similar line up for the next Ashes in Australia.

Cook
Hameed
Root
Bairstow
Moeen
Stokes
Buttler (wk)
Woakes
Rashid
Broad
Anderson

Why Yasir our captain need to retire clue less captain worst captain Pakistan ever have in their history

yes I always said he was over rated. drop him for Asghar

Concur on all counts. KP is only one man and in any event was not performing as well after Textgate. The failure in the batting is collective - they do not know how to dig in and stop a collapse.

Cook is mentally exhausted and should give up the armband to concentrate on batting.

Anderson is near the end, Broad starting to creak and in need of a long rest, Finn has gone backwards and Wood is made of glass.

Moeen has the skill with the bat but lacks nous, while he is not a test spinner. I would drop him and stick with Rashid who might turn into one.

Too early to day whether Jennings is average or not. Need to see more of him. I'd go with

Cook
Hameed
Jennings
Root
Barstow(wk)
Moeen
Buttler
Anderson
Broad
Woakes
Wood (if fit?)

For the English summer. You don't need more than 1 allrounder. Stokes is neither consistent with ball nor bat and Moeen has been pretty good with the bat. Rashid will never be test class. He's quite ordinary

At Sydney? Wow.
If anything they need to bring in a support bowler. Nawaz will have to come in for one the bowlers

Lol rest him in the only place he's going to get any sort of help? Brilliant idea. Wouldn't put this past PCB management tbh

18 overs for 54 runs on a day 3 pitch is decent, considering what happened. not good but decent

True, he should play at Sydney regardless; it would be a huge gamble dropping our lead strike bowler.

He still looked like the only bowler who could get any wicket here,he is Pakistan's only hope right now, resting him won't be a wise choice at all

No Stokes? Strewth! He's our one real impact player! I'll have:

Cook
Hameed
Jennings
Root (capt.)
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler (w)
Woakes
Rashid
Broad
Anderson or Wood

The problem with that lineup is that Rashid is not good enough to play as a specialist spinner and I doubt he ever would be. Spin is anyway not England's strength and they should stick to a four full time fast bowler strategy. Moeen has shown a little more ability with the bat this year and has done well both against Pakistan and India whereas Stokes has done little since that 258 against Saffers. He is good with the ball but he can't bowl longer spells either. Neither Moeen bhsi nor hobbit Stokes are Kallis incarnated but I think considering Moeens form with the bat I would have him. Besides, Moeen and Root can be your 5th and 6th bowlers.

Why not...lets try

Sharjeel
Azhar
Babar
Younus
Misbah
Asad
Sarfaraz
Amir
Wahab
Asghar
Imran

A match winning 10fer is a pretty big 'apart from'

Also did very well in Sri Lanka.

So is there is any chance he might be good enough to adapt?

He's done enough to suggest he's a good bet still I would say.

Also the 5fer at the Oval where he took out the English top order in the 3rd innings.

i wanted to try asghar in this test itself.. now not too late, rest yasir for SCG and bring in Asghar...

I always observe Pakistani selectors/officials use the word rest instead of drop when latter is the case.

Yasir Shah is the best spinner in the world and no way should he be dropped for a test match at the SCG. He bowled very well at the Gabba, without reward and from what I've read, the tactics utilized by the team management prevented him from being successful at the MCG.

If he gets runs to play with, Shah can win us the SCG test, just like he won us two matches in England, earlier this year.

Now i second the thread title and thread opener.

It's time for Asghar's Test debut.

Twp do7ble centuries with the ball, wonder how many spinners have achieved that in an year. How many best spinners avrage 40 with the ball in a calendar year?

Over reaction.

This is a pathetic pitch.

Runs scored on these wickets should be marked with an asterisk.

Bowlers figures should always be considered minus the stats on these roads.

Yasir will be wasted again yes, but not sure if Asghar should be debuted in a spinner's graveyard.
