Plenty of good TV dramas out there which started off pretty well but went downhill as the seasons progressed.
One that immediately comes to my mind is Supernatural. IMO purely on entertainment basis, it's original storyline of s1-5 is up there on par with the greatest of all time. After that it has been on a continuous downward spiral becoming a joke these days.

Community is another one.

Babylon 5 should finished after resolution of Vorlons/Shadows storyline.
X-files was brilliant in early season. Then it went crazy in Alien conspiracy arc.
Dexter and True Blood were pretty good early on then lost plot during last few seasons.

Most series tend to overrun their shelf life, the only one which went from the top to almost unwatchable was The Walking Dead. That went from my all time favourite to one I could barely be bothered to watch beyond season 5.

Apparently this season that's currently airing is much better than the previous 2 or 3 have been. Haven't brought myself to watch it though.

The Big Bang Theory. What a mess it has become. Not that it was any great to begin with either.

Suits. First season and second were brilliant but then became a soapy drama. After that only interesting thing from that was Meghan Markle marrying into the royal family.

Dynasty should have finished long before it did.
Amanda’s wedding to the prince of Moldova and then coup followed by the Carringtons and Colbies being held hostage was just a step too far.
Thank god for Dex Dector

True Detective. It was a shame that it fell apart in 2nd season after that great 1st one.

House of Cards. Crap after 2nd season.

Game of Thrones. Lost the plot after 4th.

Dexter. They managed to keep it original till 4th season.

Suits. After 2nd, the main attempt at keeping interest was not the story but bedroom scenes of Meghan Markle and catchy oneliners between other protagonists.

Community. First 3 seasons though were just much much better than your regular sitcoms.

Silicon Valley. Perhaps the finale of 1st season should have been end of it. Though the rest is still watchable.

Spartacus. Only 1st season is good.

Prison break. Only 1st season too.

Homeland. The series lost it's mojo after 2nd season.

None. Watched bits and pieces here and there. It is absolutely garbage. Very childish plot!

You should watch from the start. It's an excellent show with the first four seasons arguably the best to appear on the TV.
It's only afterwards when it started to suck turning into a complete garbage.

House of Cards lost steam after its first season. Underwoods became far too overpowered.

Blacklist.

Limitless surprisingly got cancelled after season 1.. but ended perfectly.

That's why I think mini series are better.

Blake 7.
Should have ended after the first season once the actor who played Blake got the boot...

Babylon 5 was written to last five seasons. The problem was it was canceled during its fourth season (don't remember the exact timeline so factcheck from google for accuracy but the gist remains) and then the fourth season was rushed into completing the story.

They even filmed the finale after season 4 which was shown at the end of season 5 as another network picked up the show and they went ahead with season 5 anyway.

That in a way made season 5 redundant slightly, but all those points were written well before and hence the continuity remained to a certain degree. If you remember the time traveling episodes, you will realize that Sheradon had actually seen what happens during and after the shadow war and also J'kar knew how his story would end.

There has been no show like Babylon 5, it was a pity that some actors left and some TV producers canceled the show due to the lack of their vision. There's literally no sci-fi show that comes even close to Babylon 5 and that's after the misfortune that the show suffered, if it had gone all according to the plan, it would have dwarfed every other sci-fi out of existence, it still does, but season 5 kinda lessens the gap.

The Walking Dead.

Enjoyed the first few seasons but then it became repetitive and dull.

Season 5 was pretty much pointless , even Telepath Wars arc was left unfinished. I do agree that Babylon 5 was one of the greatest sci-fi shows of all time.

2.5 Men
Walking Dead - worst, absolute worst, I regret time wasted on this garbage
Prison Break
House
House of Cards
Dexter
Homeland
Lost
South Park
TBBT
GOT may join the list in a few months time barring a major miracle.

The telepath war wasn't really a major story point in the show. Londo and J'kar carried the 5th season but despite their immense charm, it just wasn't enough.

Season 5 wasn't really up to Babylon 5 standards but the real travesty was basically cancelling the show which as far as bad decisions go, is only second to the cancellation of Firefly.

I mean they canceled Firefly. They ... canceled ... Firefly!!

Surprised no one mentioned The Simpsons.

Good call, went downhill rapidly after the original writers left to work on Futurama. Also those who mentioned Homeland, another good call. The first two seasons were much better than everything that followed, although the season based in Pakistan was interesting from a location POV obviously.

There was a show in which there was a nerdy guy who by some happenstance became a spy. I think it was called Chuck, the show was amazing for the first two or so seasons but perhaps the writers didn't know what to do with it after that and it felt such a drag. It was really funny and interesting at one point.

Please don't. I'm in 3rd season right now and really really want to finish it.
shaz619 What's this heretic talking about?

Don't want to do a spoiler here but let's just say this show is probably the no.1 contender so far for the accolade. Will look forward to future updates on your progress. :137:

I agree. After original Star Trek - which was so fundamental and so ahead if it’s time - B5 was the best. But Trekkies rate their DS9 higher for some reason.

Deep Space 9 has its moments and hence it's my favorite Star Trek series. The underlying fact remains that a lof of credit in DS9's charm goes to basically moving away from Rodberry's original vision of saintly humans and absence of grey areas. The episodes where there's conflict between the ideals, and the shady characters like Garrek, Quark and Unit 42 (or whatever it was called) are intriguing and make the show memorable.

I won't go in the debate of how much of DS9 is inspired by B5 but for me, B5 is just better than DS9 in almost all possible ways. It was also unnecessary to add characters from Enterprise just to avoid rumors and stopping fan fiction.

Should’ve ended after the 3rd season max although I’m not a huge fan of seasons 2 and 3 as well. I don’t like JJ Abrams at all. He thinks adding in more and more unanswered questions is good writing.

Guess you never read about Lost online, easily the biggest show to go downhill..

I think it was ok up until season 3 because you would still be under the impression the show is going somewhere. Just keep watching as long as you are getting some mileage from it. Personally, by that stage it started getting too ridiculous for me to bother with it beyond that.

I watched all of B5 to the end of season five and found it almost unrelentingly mediocre. Sisko just never rang true for me. Quark was the only one who had any edge to him. People say it got better in the last two seasons which I saw some of, but the denouement fell flat too.

No way, ignore what people are saying you will massively regret it. Finish the entire series, I loved the finishing stretch. Don't watch it with preconceived notions

Lost didn't go downhill or else it wouldn't be regarded as one of the greatest ever, it consistently averaged 10 million viewers which was insane back then and broke records when it came to award nominations and wins, even in its final season I remember it was among shows which had the most nominations in the emmy's, on the whole it was acclaimed critically.

One thing I will say, to all the fans of How I Met Your Mother; don't watch the final season.

Questions fundamentally drive a narrative in general and depending on genre more unaswered questions is not a bad thing and keep the viewer engaged because they present the obstacle in a story but if you're not into psychological thrillers or mystery's you wont like it, dont think you particularly liked the haunting of hill house as well as much as others

Nice assumptions there. I quite enjoyed the haunting of hill house and psychological thrillers are one of my favourites genres. Bad writing is bad writing

Not assumption read my post again in response to your posts in that thread, not as much as others. What you deem to be bad writing is your opinion, but unanswered questions are an important driver in thriller and mystery plots

The Walking Dead.

Did you finish it?

Just finished it myself (all eleven seasons) over a span of 4 months after it was recommended to me by my cousin.

I gave up after Rick left.

I avoided any spoilers or information about the show that might have given things away so wasn't sure if he had left for good.

Though he left quite deep into it so I prodded on to watch till the end as I agree he was a big miss as the main character.
