Has just lost the 1st test vs England. Tactically, didn't have a great game in terms of field placings and handling and rotation of his bowlers.

But I'm gonna open myself to ridicule on the day he made an unimpressive debut and say - got a good gut feeling about his future as Indian captain. Something about the way he was interacting with the players and his expressions as defeat loomed suggests that once he gets more confident in his authority, he will turn out to be a very good, if not great captain for India. I don't think he is still confident in asserting himself on the seniors like Jadeja and Bumrah, but he will eventually get there without being disrespectful. Tactics and the rest can be learnt or even imbibed from others. But he seems like he can get a team to play with him.

India will never find a captain like Ganguly or Kohli again. A dark era for India in Tests.
Shreyas Iyer is a good captain. Ideally, he should be Indian captain in all formats now. He is also the right profile in terms of age and experience, but there is an agenda against him due to which he is never allowed to have a permanent spot in the team and inexperienced people like Gill have been pushed ahead for leadership roles.

Absolutely agree , Shreyas never received the kind of consistent backing that players like Gill and Rahul got from the management. With proper support, he would’ve already blossomed into a top-class player. And yes, he’s a damn good captain too. Unfortunately, with Gautam seemingly calling all the shots, this team is heading in the wrong direction.

Pant or Rahul should have been the captain. Ideally Bumrah should have taken the role if not for injury concerns.

Gill hasn't captained even in Ranji Trophy. Captaining in IPL is very different to captaincy in International Cricket. Hopefully India loses this series badly & better sense prevails, somebody else be made the captain rather than somebody who averages 35 with the bat in test cricket & is certified ftb who fails in finals & crunch moments.

Ideally captain should have been Bumrah but injury prone back ache will never play all 5 test series.

2nd option should have been sheryas but due to agenda bias he won't be pushed forward.

3rd option should have been Jaiswal just so I can irritate and butcher him further.

You're not alone. I liked his captaincy. He can learn tactics over time and even start making decisions on his own without GG's approval.

As long we are producing some decent players, he'll be fine as captain.

Right decision to give him captaincy.

If the rumours are true I doubt he can handle captaincy.

Good enough batsman but I think he isn’t ready for captaincy yet. It’s actually a shame that India hasn’t groomed a more suitable and experienced captain to replace Sharma and Kohli.

Someone like Sarfraz Khan or Nair would have been perfect for this.

Lol Sarfraz or Nair, only a management with history of being a joke like PcB would appoint such a left field troll idea.

Shouldve appointed Shreyas Iyer to smash the ball everywhere on such flat decks.

Clearly I said “groomed”. They had years and years to groom these cricketers.

Gill is not the guy you should be making captain atm in Test cricket. I think Pant should have been the front runner for captaincy...

There is a significant thought in India that Shreyas is not a Test-grade batsman. I count myself in this bunch. He has also not endeared himself to cricket officials by seemingly prioritizing T20s and the IPL over Test and national duties. So not sure if there is a particular agenda against him.
