WHEN Matthew Hayden talks cricket, you listen.
The former Australian opener appeared on Triple M’s Rush Hour to discuss Australia’s chances in their looming home Test series against South Africa.
“I like the fact we’ve got a good pace bowling attack,” Hayden said.
“You’ve also got some healthy competition internally to the squad.
“You’ve got the Marsh boys who are up there — (Shaun) Marshy’s made a good half century, Joey Burns has made a hundred up here at the Gabba — they’re two people who are in direct competition.”
The Aussies experienced a run of disastrous form in early 2016 which saw them lose in three series whitewashes in all formats of the game.
“When they go abroad, they struggle (and) when they come home, they dominate — it’s probably to be expected,” Hayden said.
Hayden turned to the 3-0 white-wash in the Sri Lankan Test tour as an example of how teams need to change up the roster to get the best results.
“I think Burns was a bit stiff to get dropped in the third Test match in Sri Lanka.

“But you know what? They were doing poorly and sometimes sides need to make changes — and they decided to go that way.

The 103-Test veteran wasn’t short of advice for Usman Khawaja, either. “It never pays to argue the toss,” Hayden said in regard to the Queensland batsman’s recent flare-up over being dropped in Sri Lanka.
“In sporting sides you kind of feel a bit jipped at times because you want to do better and you’re driven by your own success.
“But it’s always clearly one case, and that’s let your bat do the talking. I do think it was a harsh call on Uzzy — he’s always had those calls unfortunately.
“He just has to shut up and get runs — which he’s done this particular innings — but keep getting runs and keep mounting his story otherwise there’s going to be other players to take his spot.”

Title of the article is a bit misleading.

He will probably score runs in Australia against South Africa and Pakistan. His test will be to score in England and Asia.

Agree, Hayden was not harsh on Ussie, actually a bit sympathetic for him and advised him politely to make runs, very misleading title , should be changed.

Usman has been very impressive

I'm not sure why he's not captain yet in at least one format

Usman has managed to silence the big man who never learned to play swing.

Smith is younger than him and Warner is ahead on the pecking order. Would havr loved to see Usman Khawaja captaining Australia but don't see it happening unless Smith and Warner are both unavailable.
