Silverwood quits as England coach

Silverwood came through the system and was fine in his role in LOIs (Though team was already formed by previous setups). When it came to the work that was needed from him and that was to revamp the test team into a formidable unit, he failed. Part of the blame has to go to the system with whiteball cricket being the main focus since the 2015 WC debacle but, responsibility comes on the shoulders of Silverwood as well.

Its also a fact that there is a vacuum in the system especially with regards to red ball batting talent and that needs to be filled.

England white ball success came at the expense of test cricket. They need to find a better balance.

It’s not a lack of talent, but of technique. Crawley is as talented as anybody. The County system is no longer geared to arm players with red ball skills.

Overall talent wise England is arguably in one of their best eras if not the best, its the lack of successful transition of that talent into red ball cricket with some players prioritizing whiteball cricket at the start or middle of their career (Thats why I said vacuum with regards to talent, as batting talent is there but, its not transitioned towards red ball) and for others the county system not providing them the quality competition as well as pitches/season/conditions to improve their game.

As an example Crawley is a talent, I think Pope is a one as well but, the difference they are facing in county circuit vs the test arena is bit too much (Thats another matter that I think Pope should have been moved to no 3 or at least 5 position almost an year ago). On the other hand lets take example of someone like Livingstone, who is a solid red ball player or atleast was (At one time was averaging in 40s in 4 day cricket currently still averaging 38) and was pretty close to the test team on few occasions before his talent start oozing in whiteball cricket and now he is one of those who is currently only playing whiteball cricket.

Thorpe is gone now too.

Shame, I am a big fan.

Excellent batter for England when he settled at #5 but couldn’t communicate it to the current generation.
