Foreign Minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has expressed optimism that a jiyala – a term politically associated with PPP stalwarts – will become mayor of Karachi in the next month’s local body elections due to the performance of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and hard work of party workers.

“That jiyala is even present in this gathering… we have delivered on our promises and never took a U-turn,” he said while addressing the party workers in Karachi on Saturday.

Setting aside the reports that second phase of local body elections in Sindh are likely to be postponed yet again, Bilawal said the LG polls will be held on their scheduled date (January 15) as people are fed up with repeated postponements. “Now their wait is over because municipal elections will be held in Karachi on January 15, 2023.”

Bilawal said he had asked Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to thwart all conspiracies and hold local body elections in Karachi and Hyderabad on time “because people are worried about their problems due to absence of local representatives”.

The PPP chief said the people of Karachi witnessed how quickly development work was carried out in the metropolis under his party’s administrator.

“The doors of the local body representatives were opened for the citizens. A world record has been set for the delay of the local body elections in Karachi,” he added.

Sindh puts off LG elections in Karachi and Dadu

In a late-night development, the Sindh government announced that the long awaited local government elections, scheduled for Jan 15, would not be held in Karachi and Dadu.

According to the announcement, polls in seven districts – Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal and Jamshoro – will go ahead as planned on Jan 15.

Addressing a press conference in the early hours of Friday, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon also announced that the notification to hold the polls on the basis of the existing delimitation had also been withdrawn on the demand of their ‘coalition partner’, the MQM-P, which had serious reservations with it.

The MQM-P had rejected the delimitation of local government constituencies and, terming them “unjustified”, demanded the withdrawal of the notification issued in this regard.

They are scared. And either Major is naive or dishonest. PPP forces people to vote and does violence against other parties. They will lose Sindh too if a free and fair election is done.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Saturday warned that there was a possibility of a "clash" in Sindh due to differences between political parties about the local body polls’ scheduling in Karachi and Hyderabad.

Expressing deep concern over the situation, the minister said that “miscreants” could take advantage of the potential clash.

Without mentioning much detail about the nature of the conflict, he added that a small incident could turn into something more serious in either city.

Sana urged political parties and electoral bodies to understand the severity of the situation and emphasised the need to “diffuse the tense atmosphere”.

Unofficial and unconfirmed results started pouring in after polling concluded largely peacefully in 16 districts of Sindh during the second phase of local government (LG) polls today, ARY News reported on Sunday.

The second phase of the Sindh local government (LG) polls in 16 districts remained largely peaceful except for some minor clashes reported in different localities.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Sunday “rejected” the second phase of local government (LG) elections in Sindh, saying that Karachi was “deprived of 70 union councils”.

Polling for the second phase of LG polls ended today at 5pm. The MQM-P had announced on Saturday that it would boycott the polls in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions after repeated requests for changes in the delimitation of constituencies were turned down by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Delay in results, rigging claims put question mark on LG polls

• PTI, JI, GDA accuse PPP of vote rigging; ECP termed ‘silent spectator’
• Sindh’s ruling party accuses opponents of sabotaging peaceful exercise
• MQM-P feels vindicated by ‘low turnout’

After remaining largely smooth and peaceful throughout the day on Sunday, the local government elections in Karachi, Hyderabad and other parts of Sindh came under a question mark later in the night when contesting parties accused the ruling PPP of vote rigging and criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan as a “helpless and silent spectator”.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday responded to the criticism from contesting parties over the delay in results of the second phase of local government elections in Sindh, saying that “this is a complicated process and it takes time to prepare the result of one union council.”

The explanation was given by Sindh Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan in a press statement this morning.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday released the final consolidated results of 170 out of 235 union councils in Sindh’s Karachi division, where polling was held on Jan 15 for the post of chairman and vice chairman.

According to the initial results, PPP is leading with 80 union council seats followed by Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) which has won 49 seats so far. PTI has won 29 seats, PML-N six seats, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam and independent candidates with two seats each whereas Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan have a seat each to themselves for now.

The electoral body has said that the remaining results will be released by Monday evening, adding that this was “a complicated process and it takes time to prepare the result of one union council”.

On Jan 15, the second phase of the local government elections in Sindh was held in 16 districts of Sindh — East, West, South, Central, Korangi, Keamari, and Malir of the Karachi division; and Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Badin, Sujawal, and Thatta of the Hyderabad division.

The crooks are trying to be clever by playing off the JI and the PTI. No sane or honest person would vote for the thugs of PK aka as the PPP. A party with no ideology, no morals supported by people with even less morals.

And we have posters who think ppp is near end.

Shows the public perception atleast in these areas.

But no these elections are a lie, only true representation is facebook and twitter likes

Sindh Labour Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Saeed Ghani has asserted that his party leadership will mull over giving Karachi Mayor’s slot to Jamat-e-Islami (JI) or not, ARY News reported on Monday.

Speaking on ARY News programme ‘11th Hour’, the Sindh provincial minister noted that PPP will start consultations with other political parties after the announcement of the complete LG polls’ results.

He said that the LG polls in the remaining UCs will take more time, however, mayor will be elected before the next phase of elections. After PPP got majority in the Karachi LG polls, Ghani said that PPP’s top leadership will decide on whether give Karachi mayorship to JI or not.

Imran Khan has been criticized for taking Karachi and Sindh for granted. Ali Zaidi has not delivered as PTI President in Sindh, he should be replaced by Asad Umar.

JI emerges as kingmaker after PPP rules out alliance with PTI
The PPP has failed to secure a simple majority in the City Council, due to which all eyes are set on the runner-up, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), whose decision of alliance will determine the next mayor of the city

Although the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the largest political party in Karachi after the local government polls, it has failed to secure a simple majority in the City Council, due to which all eyes are set on the runner-up, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), whose decision of alliance will determine the next mayor of the city.

According to the official results of the Karachi local government elections announced by the ECP, the PPP, JI and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have become the three largest parties of the City Council of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation after having won 93, 86 and 40 union committees (UCs) respectively.

As the PPP has ruled out any possibility of forming a coalition with the PTI, the JI has become the kingmaker in Karachi as its decision to ally itself either with the PPP or the PTI will determine the new local government setup of the city.

PPP Karachi President Saeed Ghani in a press conference on Monday stated in unambiguous words that the PPP would not hold any talks with the PTI for coalition in the City Council. He added that the party was however open to talks with the JI.

Meanwhile, in a late-night press conference, Karachi JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman claimed that the elections were rigged and the first position of the JI was snatched. He declared that the next mayor of Karachi would belong to the JI.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday rejected the results of second phase of local body elections in Sindh and accused the PPP-led provincial government of rigging the polls.

“The manner in which elections held, new precedents of rigging were set. We reject the elections results and demand that an inquiry should be launched,” said PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry while addressing the media in Lahore.

Everyone knows that PPP has done Jack in Sindh and Khi. There is no justified reasons for them to have won these many votes. There is plenty of video evidenceof rigging as well but as usual the compromised Election Commission will turn a blind eye to it just like they did with the Yousaf Raza Gillani Son bribery video

PPP-MQM-ECP nexus is exposed. MQM agreed to boycott the elections so ppp could rig to their hearts content with their pets, the ECP. Only in a banana republic can a chor wife killer party like ppp ''win'' an election after destroying Sindh for decades. However, Pakistani awaam is surely cool with it, that's why we see no end to the destruction caused by GHQ-Raiwind-Ghari Khuda Baksh treason homes without any serious protest. Apparently, ppp have presented a rigged election template here to GHQ which they will look to incorporate in other provinces as well to fraudulently defeat Imran Khan.

Moeed Pirzada's banana republic video on Youtube explains the matter quite well.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Tuesday staged protest rallies in major cities of the country against, what it claimed, rigging in the second phase of the local government elections in Karachi held on Sunday (Jan 15).

The JI bagged 86 union councils and came in second after the PPP which won 93 UCs in the LG polls in Karachi.

Protest rallies and demonstrations were held in Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad, Multan and other cities on the appeal of JI chief Sirajul Haq. The JI workers and people from other walks of life participated in large numbers and raised slogans against the government.

Addressing a protest demonstration here on Tuesday, Siraj expressed his determination that the mayor of Karachi will be from his party, saying: “There is full evidence of rigging in some UCs in the LG elections, which is a conspiracy to block the way of JI.”

PTI and PPP workers clashed outside the Keamari deputy commissioner’s (DC) office in Karachi on Wednesday, pelting either side with stones during the consolidation of the results of the recently held local government elections in Sindh.

The second phase of the local government elections was held in 16 districts of Sindh on Sunday. However, major contesting parties — including the ruling PPP — had raised concerns over an unusual delay in the results in Karachi and blamed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for mismanagement.

The ECP took more than 36 hours to announce the results of 236 union committees of Karachi as the opposition PTI and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) accused the provincial administration of “rigging and managing things” in its favour.

Amid mounting tension, ECP takes note of ‘irregularities’

• PPP claims victory in another UC
• Siraj seeks Zardari’s intervention
• Imran says PPP has no commitment to fair polls

KARACHI: Controversy surrounding the Jan 15 LG polls in Karachi deepened on Wednesday as the Election Commission took notice of alleged irregularities in six union councils (UCs) amid accusations by Jamaat-i-Islami emir Sirajul Haq and PTI chairman Imran Khan that

the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had used the resources of the Sindh government to “manipulate the results and change the original vote count”.

Initial unofficial results gave PPP 93 seats out of the 235 contested. While 86 seats went to JI, 40 were grabbed by PTI. The rest of the seats were won by smaller parties and independent candidates.

Jamaat-i-Islami’s (JI) Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said on Thursday that he was hopeful the PPP, the ruling party in Sindh, would address the former’s reservations about the recently held local government elections.

He made the remarks after meeting with a PPP delegation led by Saeed Ghani, who is also the provincial information minister.

The meeting came days after the JI chief levelled serious allegation of rigging against the PPP, which led Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to contact him over the phone and assure him that legitimate concerns regarding the polls would be addressed.

It is pertinent to mention that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken notice of alleged irregularities in six union councils (UCs) amid accusations by JI emir Sirajul Haq and PTI chairman Imran Khan that the PPP used the Sindh government’s resources to “manipulate the results”.

ECP HEARS JI PETITION AGAINST IRREGULARITIES IN KARACHI LG POLLS

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday heard a petition of Jamaat-e-Islami against alleged irregularities in LG election in Karachi, ARY News reported.

JI lawyer Hassan Javed in the ECP hearing argued about irregularities in presiding officer’s and the Form 11. “We have submitted all Form 11, signed by the concerned presiding officer,” JI counsel said.

Returning officers have changed the election results, Hassan Javed said. “There is difference in vote counts given in Form 11, 13 and Form 45,” he argued.

“Your case belongs to post-election irregularities,” ECP member observed. “We will look into the matter,” he said.

People’s Party’s lawyer said that the issue should be forwarded to the election tribunal. “We could take action if found any discrepancy,” commission’s member remarked.

The election commission adjourned further hearing of the case until February 07.

The ECP in an earlier hearing suspended results of UC-1 and 8 of Safoora Town and UC-6 of Chanesar Town on a plea of the JI.

The party’s lawyer told the election commission panel, hearing the case, that according to the Form 11, the JI candidates returned winners in all three union committees.

MQM-P to stage sit-in against Karachi, Hyderabad LG polls
MQM-P to contest by-polls on all nine Karachi seats vacated after approval of PTI's resignations

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement—Pakistan (MQM-P) announced on Sunday the decision to stage a sit-in against the local government (LG) elections in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions of Sindh at Press Club Chowk from February 12.

MQM-P's Khalid Maqbool made the announcement and said the party would shift their Bahadurabad centre to Press Club Chowk next Sunday.

Addressing a workers meeting in Karachi, he said Pakistan is at a critical juncture but that there was no one to take decisions. He added that the economy will sink politics. "The time has come to fulfill the promise we made to our forefathers," he said.

The MQM-P chief announced that his party would not only contest the by-polls on the nine Karachi seats, but also win the seats. They were vacated after National Assembly (NA) Speaker Raja Parvez Ashraf accepted the resignations of all Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs in three different episodes.

Maqbool said that they had "given up" on the local body elections, and now they have to fight for their mandate. The MQM-P leader added that the results of the LG polls in Karachi showed who wants to win the polls at the expense of the people.

He instructed the workers to prepare for protests in the coming week, saying they would fight Karachi's case from February 12.

It is to be noted that the MQM-P boycotted the second phase of the local body elections in Sindh, expressing its reservations and concerns regarding delimitations, particularly in the two cities which are considered the MQM-P’s major vote banks.

JI-PTI STRATEGY COMMITTEE ON LG POLLS FAILS TO SETTLE MUTUAL CLAIMS

The Joint Strategy Committee formed by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and PTI, over local government polls result in Karachi, has seen failure to move ahead, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Two major parties in Karachi, had constituted a committee last month to challenge the local government election results in the metropolis jointly.

The JI and PTI delegations discussed matters pertaining to Karachi mayorship and alleged ‘rigging’ in some UCs in LG polls.

They had announced to constitute a joint committee to tally Form-11s — polling station result forms issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Karachi LG polls.

But both parties have now claimed over 10 LG seats they had won in elections between them. Both parties have laid their claims over various local council seats in Karachi’s District Central, East and Keamari district.

The joint committee had to exchange Form 11 within a week but failed to reach a consensus and both parties reached to the election commission seeking to settle their complaints.

It is to be mentioned here that the People’s Party, JI and the PTI have challenged election results against each other in the ECP.

Polling begins for 63 vacant local government seats in Sindh
In Karachi, the by-polls are being held for 11 UCs' chairmen and vice chairmen as well as 15 vacant seats of ward members

The by-elections on the vacant seats in the local government bodies in 24 districts of Sindh, including all the seven districts of Karachi, are being held today (Sunday).

As per the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the by-polls will be held for a total of 63 seats across the province.

The election campaigns by the contesting candidates have already ended at Friday midnight. The polling for the by-elections began at 8 am and will continue until 5 pm without any break.

In Karachi, the by-elections would be held for the chairmen and vice chairmen of 11 union committees (UCs) as well as 15 vacant seats of ward members.

The results of the 11 UCs may change the party position in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation where currently the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is the largest party, followed by the Jamaat-e-Islami with a close margin.

These 11 UCs in Karachi comprise UC-4 New Karachi, UC-6 North Nazimabad and UC-13 New Karachi in District Central; UC-2 Korangi, UC-3 Shah Lateef Town and UC-8 Landhi in District Korangi; UC-1 Orangi, UC-2 Orangi and UC-8 Mominabad in District West; UC-2 Bihar Colony in District South; and UC-2 Baldia in District Keamari.

The PPP had earlier criticised the ECP for holding the by-elections before holding the mayoral elections, stating that it would set a bad precedent. However, the ECP did not accept the PPP’s demand.

A total of 449 polling stations have been established in Sindh for the by-polls where a total of 434 candidates are in the field. Over 690,000 voters are eligible to cast their votes in these by-polls in the province.

A total of 292 polling stations in the province have been declared highly sensitive from the security point of view. During a recent meeting, Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Muhammad Sohail Rajput asked the officials concerned to ensure the installation of closed-circuit television cameras for electronic surveillance of such polling stations to ensure security on the polling day.

He also ordered ensuring water supply, electricity and other necessary facilities at the polling stations.

PPP inches closer to securing Karachi mayor seat after LG by-polls success
JI and PTI are on the second and third with 98 and 42 seats in Karachi, respectively

Pakistan People Party (PPP) Monday celebrated its overwhelming victory in Karachi after claiming victory in the local government by-elections in the port city.

The party's overall position has strengthened and brought it closer to the mayor's seat, as it clinched 98 union council constituencies after the unofficial and unconfirmed results of the by-polls — held a day earlier — were announced.

So far, results for 240 seats have been announced out of the total 246 across Karachi, as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has withheld results of the remaining six including five from district west and one from district east.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is at the second spot and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is on third with 98 and 42 seats in the provincial capital, respectively.

Other parties that secured seats in Sindh in the local body elections include Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with seven seats and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) two, while one seat each went to Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan and an independent candidate.

Following his party's victory, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed gratitude for the party's success in the by-elections terming it a "historical achievement".

Taking to its Twitter account, the party shared Bilawal's message after the win.

"From Karachi to Kashmore, people have once again reposed their faith in the PPP. It is a historical achievement that all the district chairmen, including Karachi and Hyderabad, will be jiyalas (PPP supporters)," the PPP chairman said.

Karachi and Sindh will vote for PPP :)

Tehreek e nainsaaf cant accept this reality.

Unofficial results on Monday of by-elections held on 63 local body seats in five divisions of Sindh showed the PPP emerging victorious in Karachi.

According to Radio Pakistan, the PPP emerged as the single largest party in the by-polls. Quoting unofficial results, the report said that the PPP bagged seven out of the 11 union committees in Karachi while the remaining four went to the Jamat-e-Islami (JI).

“Similarly, [the PPP] won two out of four union councils in Hyderabad and bagged a majority in all the districts where elections were held,” the report added.

PPP leader Murtaza Wahab congratulated the party leadership and supporters on their victory, noting that “Karachiites have once again expressed full confidence” in the party.

In a statement, he assured citizens that the PPP’s elected representatives would work tirelessly to solve the problems faced by the people.

“Thank you my dear Karachi for rejecting politics of hate, divide and protests and for choosing Bilawal’s narrative of working together in a cohesive manner,” he said separately on Twitter, adding that the party would not let the people of the metropolis down.

Meanwhile, PPP Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed his appreciation to the people of Karachi for their support that led to the party’s victory in the LG polls.

“It is a historic achievement that all district chairmen, including Karachi and Hyderabad, are from our party,” he said in a statement shared by the PPP on Twitter.

He emphasised that the achievement came with an increased responsibility on the part of the party’s chairmen to serve the people without any discrimination.

Bilawal directed the elected representatives of the party to involve every street and neighborhood in the development process. He urged them to continue working tirelessly to serve the people and set new standards of public service.

Polling sees low turnout
Polling for the local government by-election in 11 union committees of Karachi was held on Sunday but was marred by low turnout, clashes and scuffles between workers of main contesting parties and allegations of rigging mainly against the PPP.

The polling began at 8am and continued till 5pm in a largely peaceful manner with sporadic incidents of violence and recriminations of rigging by political parties.

The turnout remained low at the start of the day, with more voters coming out of their homes as the polling neared conclusion. However, the electoral process failed to attract a large number of voters by the end of the official timing of voting.

There were some complaints of delay in starting of voting at some polling stations, but the timing of casting votes was not extended at any of the facilities.

With a total 6,707 policemen deployed for security duty, the situation turned tense at several polling stations where workers mainly from the three contesting parties — PPP, JI and PTI — accused each other of rigging and violence.

In Central district’s UC-4 and UC-13 of New Karachi, the situation turned tense during the early hours of the day when workers of both the JI and the PTI gathered outside one of the polling stations and accused activists of the rival PPP of “capturing” the facility even before start of the voting process.

The tension grew in the day when former MNA of PTI Aslam Khan claimed to have seized a number of ballot papers from “PPP workers” showing votes in favour of the ruling party. The general secretary of the PTI Karachi chapter, Arsalan Taj Ghumman, took to Twitter and shared footage of “fake votes” seized by the former MNA.

Although there was no official word from police, the PTI claimed to have handed over the “PPP worker” to police allegedly involved in rigging.

In Shah Faisal Colony, clashes erupted between workers of two contesting parties after voting was over leaving at least six people injured.

A JI spokesman claimed that all six injured were party activists, who had been attacked by workers of the rival parties for stopping from ‘post-voting rigging’.

The city chief of JI, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, alleged that the PPP used government machinery and police for rigging. In his tweet, he mentioned UCs in Orangi Town, New Karachi and Korangi where the workers of the ruling party were roaming freely defying law and carrying out rigging to change the results in PPP’s favour.

“In eight out of 11 UCs, our party is leading the count, but the PPP is using government machinery and in connivance with the polling staff is changing the results. The ECP and law-enforcement agencies have become silent spectators,” he said while addressing a press conference at Idara Noor-i-Haq after the polling time was over and the vote count was underway.

The total number of seats in the City Council is 371 and the magic number required to win the mayor’s office is 186 members of the house.

The election of mayor and deputy mayor will take place on June 15 while the nomination paper can be submitted by June 9-10.

ARY

Shortly after reports of Barrister Murtaza Wahab winning the Karachi mayor elections surfaced, clashes between JI and PPP supporters were reported outside the city’s Arts Council of Pakistan where voting had been under way on Thursday.

According to unofficial results reported by a Dawn.com correspondent, Wahab won the election for the seat of the mayor by acquiring 173 votes while JI’s Naeemur Rehman remained the runner-up.

A result is yet to be officially announced.

However, immediately after unofficial results were reported, scuffles erupted between JI and PPP workers. Footage run on DawnNewsTV showed huge crowds of supporters pelting stones at security personnel blocking projectiles with their riot shields.

South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Syed Asad Raza told Dawn.com that some JI supporters started raising slogans against their rivals which resulted in a clash between both parties and a “law and order situation”.

The official said the police attempted to control the situation by charging batons against enraged supporters. “During this, two to three JI members were injured.”

SSP Raza added that currently, a “peaceful sit-in” at the Arts Council Roundabout by the JI workers was under way.

PPP celebrates ‘win’
The PPP’s Media Cell quoted party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari congratulating all mayors, deputy mayors, district councillors and “town’s chairman and deputy chairman”.

Especially conveying his felicitations to Wahab, the tweet quoted Zardari as saying, “The success of local elected representatives is the result of the workers’ hard work.” He also directed the victors to start their work from today.

Separately, in a statement issued by PPP’s Media Cell, Foreign Minister and PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated Wahab.

He said PPP’s victory today did not just belong to the party but the entire country. “This success is the result of the long struggle and sacrifices of the jiyalas of Karachi.”

The statement quoted Bilawal as saying that the local government problems of every street, neighborhood, and area of Karachi would be “solved without discrimination”.

In an official statement, Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah also congratulated, saying, “Today, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision of a jiyala becoming a mayor has won.”

JI allowed peaceful protests, says PPP’s Memon
Talking to the media in Karachi, Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon termed the JI a “fascist party”. He said they were allowed to protest peacefully but warned of taking action if they took the law into their own hands.

“A fascist party like the Jamaat handed weapons to students,” he said.

Memon claimed the JI “wanted the PPP to get them votes from the PTI”. He asked, “If the PTI supporters are sitting at their homes [and] no one is voting [for them] then what can we do?”

The PPP leader asserted, “If the JI would do hooliganism, we will not let anyone take the law into their hands. They can hold peaceful protests within the law. If anyone does vandalism, then the law will come into action.”

Voting
Earlier, voting for the office of Karachi mayor and the deputy through a show of hands took place, with PPP’s Wahab and Jamaat-i-Islami’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman in a tough contest.

The polling process remained largely peaceful throughout the day. Entry to the venue was closed at 11am and members were not allowed to enter after that.

According to a Dawn.com correspondent, 32 out of the 62 PTI members failed to appear to cast their vote. Subsequently, the total number of UC members present was 333 out of 336.

Both Rehman and Wahab reached the polling venue amid huge crowds of supporters. JI supporters could be heard chanting “Hafiz, Hafiz” repeatedly as the JI candidate entered the Arts Council premises.

Speaking to reporters outside the voting venue, Wahab claimed his party had the required numbers to win the elections.

“Our numbers are complete. If Jamaat-i-Islami’s numbers are higher, will respect them,” Wahab — also the former Karachi administrator — said.

He added, “We will have to come out of allegations. We will have to work together on Karachi’s master plan.”

Meanwhile, three detained PTI leaders, including Firdous Shamim Naqvi, were brought to the Arts Council of Pakistan in armoured police vans.

The PTI also shared a video of Naqvi exiting the van.

As the polling began, PPP Senator Saeed Ghani claimed the PPP had a strength of 173 with the PML-N and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) supporting it.

In a tweet, he said, “All 173 members of the PPP, PML-N and JUI-F have entered the election hall.”

In a prior tweet, he claimed the JI had not gathered its members even once in a show of power.

He said, “The PPP gathered its members twice during the election campaign for mayor/deputy mayor. The members’ attendance on both occasions was 100 per cent.

“Hafiz Naeem could not gather his members at one location even once. Today’s result is clear,” he added.

Although the PPP lacked a simple majority, it had emerged as the single-largest party in the 366-strong City Council — the electoral college for mayor and deputy mayor — following the January 15 local government elections and subsequent allocation of reserved seats.

On the other hand, the JI Karachi chief had the support of the PTI, in return for which the former has offered the PTI the seat of deputy mayor.

However, not all was well yet for the JI-PTI coalition as cracks have surfaced within the PTI’s city chapter with a group of elected UC chairmen and vice chairmen announcing plans to not follow their party decision and to abstain from the voting process.

JI laments PTI detentions
With several PTI leaders being under arrest following the May 9 incidents, the JI has been claiming that the PPP was pressuring PTI City Council members by having police raid their houses, abducting them and lodging false cases against them.

On May 29, JI’s Rehman also filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) seeking directives for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure that City Council members be allowed to access polling places and cast votes of their free will.

He alleged that the ruling PPP had adopted all malpractices of rigging in the local government elections, including not only polling of bogus votes and causing harassment at polling stations but also tempering the results by pressuring the presiding and returning officers.

The JI chief further said that the ECP and the provincial election commissioner were not taking any action despite the fact that they were bound to arrange fair and free elections.

Subsequently, the SHC directed the provincial administration and police to ensure the production of some detained union committee (UC) chairmen and other elected representatives to enable them to cast their votes.

Sindh loves PPP, good elections. PPP going no where and they will win for their good work

Karachi needs to be made cantonment free or all of Karachi should be classified as cantonment. Otherwise, it will be very hard for any mayor to make any changes to the city’s infrastructure.

Total thuggery by sick and twisted group of goons that is the PPP. PTI leaders were threatened and intimidated and some were kidnapped by Sindh police so that they did not vote for JI.

JI + PTI had 190 votes while PPP + allies had 173. So, the mayor should have been from JI but PPP kidnapped and threatened PTI leaders with jail and violence so they did not vote, this giving PPP the mayoral slot.

PPP acts as the flagbearer of human rights, and liberalism but it is a despicable party. Mention of PPP makes me puke!

Everything about Pakistan is sickening and depressing. Zero hope for the country. Many families are now wounding up their investments in the country and moving out at the first available opportunity. Shell has publicly acknowledged they are winding up their operations in Pakistan. Just a few individuals in the country are taking the country to the gutter.

PPP is the most despicable party is the history. It is the most hated party across the country and if it didn’t have establishment’s support, it would have been finished 15 years ago. The people who support this party are disgusting human beings.

If these thugs are not eliminated, the country will not exist in our lifetime.
