Singer KK dies at 53 after live performance in Kolkata: 'The voice of love is gone'

Singer KK, who gave Indian music lovers many hits over the last three decades has died at 53. He gave a performance at Nazrul Mancha on Tuesday and later went to his hotel where he fell ill. He was brought to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Famous Indian singer KK passed away on Tuesday night, reported Hindustan Times. He was 53. The singer fell ill while performing at an event in Kolkata and was brought to the CMRI hospital, where he was declared dead, hospital sources said.

Minister Arup Biswas said about KK's death, “Singer Anupam Roy called me up and said he is hearing something bad from the hospital. Then I contacted the hospital. They said he was brought dead. Then I rushed to the hospital.”

KK released his first album, Pal in 1999. The singer-composer, whose real name was Krishnakumar Kunnath then focussed more on Bollywood than on his independent music, giving hits such as Tadap Tadap (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999), Dus Bahane (Dus, 2005), and Tune Maari Entriyaan (Gunday, 2014).

He was born in Delhi and was also known for his electric live shows. His Instagram page had been sharing updates from his concert in Kolkata as recently as eight hours ago.

Yes, this song was sung by him, was from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, one of his earliest hits.

Saw him in Kapil Sharma show a few months back, ever smiling and laughing. Life is cruel!

Former India cricketers mourned the death of renowned singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK. The likes of Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, VVS Laxman, and Sunil Joshi took to Twitter to express grief and offer condolences to the singer's family. KK, 53, died in Kolkata on Tuesday night after reportedly falling ill following a live performance.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of KK. Condolences to his family and friends," wrote former India captain and former head coach Anil Kumble.

"Tragic to hear about the passing away of KK after falling ill while performing in Kolkata. Another reminder of how fragile life is. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti," tweeted former India opener Virender Sehwag.

"Life is so uncertain and fragile! Sad news about the tragic passing away of KK. May god grant strength to his family to bear with this loss. Om Shanti," wrote former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.

"Saddened by the untimely demise of a wonderful Singer, KK. He will live on through his music. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti," wrote former India batter VVS Laxman.

"RIP KK it’s one the sad day for music lovers and fans, will cherish his songs for life, Deepest condolences to his family & friends. Om Shanthi Om," tweeted former India left-arm spinner and current member of the selection committee Sunil Joshi.

KK performed at a concert organised by Gurudas College at Nazrul Mancha in south Kolkata for almost an hour in the evening.

He was "feeling heavy" after reaching his hotel, and soon collapsed, officials said.

He was taken to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, they said.

"KK was brought to the hospital around 10 pm. It's unfortunate that we could not treat him," a senior official of the hospital said.

Doctors at the hospital said they suspected "cardiac arrest" to be the cause of the death.

A senior officer of the Kolkata Police told PTI that a post-mortem would be conducted on Wednesday to ascertain the exact reason for the death.

His wife and children will reach Kolkata on Wednesday morning.

KK, who was on a two-day tour to Kolkata, also performed at Nazrul Manch on Monday evening in a concert organised by Vivekananda College. He was supposed to return to New Delhi on Wednesday.

Bollywood singer KK died due a cardiac arrest, indicate the preliminary findings of the post-mortem report. Police also said that there was no "foul play" behind the singer's death.

"The initial report suggested that the singer died because of myocardial infarction. There was no foul play behind his death. Clinical examination also found that the singer was having prolonged cardiac issues," the officer said.

The final autopsy report will be available after 72 hours.

KK was known for songs like 'Pal' and 'Yaaron', which went on to become big hits among teens in the late 1990s, often heard during school and college farewells and teen cultural events.

The singer's sudden death after a concert in Kolkata had raised several questions about the arrangements at the venue.

Staff members of Nazrul Manch auditorium in South Kolkata said that the venue was overcrowded during the KK concert.

Many on social media claim that the AC was not functional at the venue and the heat became oppressive during the concert.

Singers in concerts get too strained. I recently went to Arijit Singh concert in Orlando. The man sang non-stop for over 3 hours. All through the 3 hours, he never took a break and was even jumping up and down for the most part. I cannot imagine how much stress they put their body through in those live concerts.

Never knew who the guy was, but just saw joshillas posts that he sung those songs in om shanti om and gangster. Lovely songs, i still listen to those songs even today in 2022.

What a singer, feel bad for not knowing the name behind those songs.

I´ve been left utterly shocked and most devastated by the news. I believe that he never quite got the recognition that he deserved and wasn´t quite mentioned amongst the best, but he was my most favourite singer ever. I was a huge fan of the man. His most special quality was the ability to sing the most difficult songs with absolute great ease. I would like to think that I´ve okay-ish skills and voice in terms of singing, but no matter how many times I tried, I could never pull of songs sung by him. His songs were just made for him, they were meant for him.

Krishnakumar Kunnath will be missed dearly by music lovers around the world. A rare talent, a rare voice. 53 is no age to go. Heartfelt condolences to all his beloved ones.

Agree with this. The ease with which he sung all his songs was simply remarkable.

In the present generation there is no one as versatile as Sonu Nigam is. Pity about his attitude and the propensity to get mired into needless controversies though.

Still can´t get over this news. A big part of my teenage life and the years gone by seem to have been taken away from me, and I suppose that a lot of his other fans and admirers must be having similar emotions on this.

Anyone who has any understanding or knowledge of singing would agree that the "Tadap tadap ke" song is an incredibly difficult song to sing. Not many would´ve been able to pull it off with the ease that he did it with. KK was unique talent. There existed not many like him.
