What's new

Sir Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London

It matters because he's from a Muslim background in a European country .

In fact, what's the point of mentioning Hindutvas in India and their opinions when it has no relevance in the UK.

Because this thread was bumped by one. If an Indian based hindutva wants to post about a British Pakistani Mayor, then you don't expect any response? That would fall in the camp of propaganda, which I'm sure wasn't the poster's intent.

forget about losing, even if the vote is close it'll be a massive L on khans part, given how well labour have done everywhere else. likely hes just trying to mobilise the votes to be safe, i dont see it being close given how the rest of the country has gone.

I'd take Ken Livingston or Boris Johnson as Mayor of London instead of this fraud Sadiq Khan. Someone needs to check if he has an authentic law degree.

I dislike the guy but he faced a lot of racism and unnecessary criticism that is thinly veiled islamophobia.

I'm glad he won.

The Tory candidate did well. I wonder if she did well enough for it to be considered close but it's a decent result. I just don't understand their strategy. They've put up some real weirdos though since Boris.

I think if they put up a polished white middle aged white male like a young David Cameron they would have a chance. Or if Rory Stewart rejoined the party.

They put up a crazy black guy and this old woman who reminds me of the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2.

pretty much a landslide drubbing for the tories as expected, i wouldnt say it was close, and it never was tbh.

tory party have no chance in london, there only hope to is to find another BOJO who can capture the imagination, the mayoral role was perfect for him. zac goldsmith could have been their david cameron 2.0, he had fairly good press and seemed like a fairly polished guy, but was a bit too boring and didnt really have a chance.

His dad was a bus driver.

Anybody got bus driver dad’s, line them up to be Mayor

People in London with classics are screwed, the expansion will go on. Anytime you fire up the good ol E30 it’s gonna cost you

I would then expect SK to know more about London and be deeply connected with Londoners if he took rides on his dad's buses, but SK is clearly detached from Londoners and is more interested in what Trump/Boris/Left have to say.

The reverse is also true, desis in London are not exactly fair towards a white mayor.

It comes with the territory. Check out some of the videos of SK at City Hall - you actually end up feeling SK deserves what he gets.

My recent politics is quite simple.

I look to see what people's opinion is on the situation in Gaza.

The right wing and Tories have labelled pro Palestinian supporters terrorists, Islamists and all sorts of abhorrent things. And they have tried to tarr Sadiq with the same bus.

So when it comes to a choice between Sadiq and genocide enablers/supporters it's quite a clear and easy won for me ( not replicated on a national level of course where I hope Starmer gets trounced)

@Technics 1210 of course I should add that my opinion on him is largely irrelevant since I don't live in London. He has some very flawed politics but in this case I'm glad he won just because of who he was up against rather than because I support his policies.

Sadiq Khan secures convincing win over Tory rival in London mayoral race

Labour's Sadiq Khan has secured a historic third term as London mayor, seeing off Tory challenger Susan Hall.

It followed "wild rumours" the incumbent could have suffered a shock defeat, although both sides subsequently said they believed Mr Khan would win.

It was the first time any candidate for London mayor has won a third term in office, with Mr Khan's predecessors Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone both having served two terms.

As he took to the stage to make his victory speech, the re-elected mayor was booed and heckled with a shout of "Khan killed London" by the far-right Britain First candidate, who received fewer votes than Count Binface.

Speaking at City Hall, Mr Khan said: "We faced a campaign of non-stop negativity, but I couldn't be more proud that we answered the fearmongering with facts, hate with hope, and attempts to divide with efforts to unite.

"We ran a campaign that was in keeping with the spirit and values of this great city, a city that regards our diversity not as a weakness, but as an almighty strength - and one that rejects right hard-wing populism and looks forward, not back."

He also thanked his family for their support, but apologised for them having to deal with "protests by our home" and "threats".

While congratulating Mr Khan on his victory, Ms Hall said he should stop "patronising" people who care about London.

When she had previously challenged him in a mayoral debate about "gangs running around with machetes" in the capital, he had said she should "stop watching The Wire" - a gritty US-based crime drama.

In her concession speech, she said: "The thing that matters the most, and to me, is reforming the Met and making London safe again. I hope Sadiq makes this his top priority.

"He owes it to the families of those thousands of people who have lost lives to knife crime under his mayoralty.

"And I hope too that he stops patronising people, like me, who care. This isn't an episode of The Wire, this is real life on his watch."

The pair had repeatedly clashed during the campaign, fought out amid concerns about knife crime and the handling of pro-Palestinian marches in the capital.

None of those green policies are sadiq khans fault its what the tories have signed up to intl agreements on 2030 and 2050 targets .

Maybe, but the way they’ve gone about enacting those green policies is a bit thick though and short sighted.

SK just pampers to the left and TfL.

The cost of public transport in London has gone through the roof. Londoners are paying more so TfL can plug a gaping hole in their finances created by golden pension pots - over £1 BILLION.

Nearly every road in London now has a speed limit of 20 mph, and these include A roads.

More traffic jams (causing more pollution) because of a rapid increase in cycle lanes!

Then of course you have the strikes, policing etc.

Notice how ULEZ is at the bottom of the pile. ULEZ was implemented by Boris in Zone 1 to 3, then SK extended it to zones 4 - 6 where at least 10M Londoners reside.

ULEZ has sweet FA to do with improving the environment because ultimately if you want to pollute London with your old car then you can legally for £12.50 a day!

Mayor funds training to keep London's mosques safe

The Mayor of London has announced funding for mosques across the capital to receive security training sessions.

Sadiq Khan said the city was “united against all forms of hate”, as he pledged £10,000 to help protect Muslims against Islamophobic attacks.

The extra support comes as people shared their safety fears following the recent racist riots and disorder across the country.

City Hall said the mayoral funding will be used to provide the sessions on protective security, safety processes and online safety.

Mr Khan had been urged earlier this month to ensure places of worship had extra security.

Hina Bokhari, the London Assembly’s Liberal Democrat group leader, said many Muslims had become “extremely worried” by the “unacceptable” spread of hate crimes.

Tell MAMA, the organisation working to tackle anti-Muslim hatred, told Reuters that it had received more than 500 calls and online reports of Islamophobic incidents from across the UK since the start of the disorder two weeks ago.

The mayor said: “I’m proud that last week Londoners sent a clear message that we are an open and welcoming city that is united against all forms of hate."

He praised the "peaceful shows of unity on our streets", which he said were "inspiring and comforting".

"However, the violence and disorder that was seen across the country has left many Londoners afraid," added Mr Khan.

"There is no room for complacency. We can never stop being vigilant."

He said he was working "closely" with the government, the Metropolitan Police and community leaders "to ensure that Londoners feel safe, and are safe".

The Home Office has also provided additional funding for protective security for mosques, he added.
