While Indians are increasingly downloading Snapchat on their smartphones, the company’s CEO feels India is “too poor” to seriously consider expanding its user base.

According to a report by Variety , the disparaging comment was made by the CEO of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel, allegedly during a meeting to discuss the growth of the app’s user base in 2015.

When an employee raised concern about the app’s slow growth in a market like India which has a growing mobile penetration, Spiegel cut the employee mid-sentence saying, “This app is only for rich people,” Spiegel said, Variety quoted the employee’s revelation. “I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain.”

The Indians on the social media apparently aren't too pleased with this quote of Snapchat's CEO :srt

Snapchat's rating on google play has just been dropped from 4.7 to 4.0 after this comment ..

lmao indians and desis in general are the most thin skinned people in the world

anyways 2 points:

1) The comment has merit. The app uses a lot of bandwith and in a third world country like India where there isnt enough 4G penetration or use of smartphones on mass scale, Snapchat wouldnt be as popular. Snapchat needs fast internet and an i phone or the samsung smartphones so the phones being used by majority awaamin our countries wont cut it

2) Surprising that Spiegel said these regardless of his opinion because you dont say these things publicly

Considering how extremely common snapchat is in Pakistan I'm pretty sure they won't have trouble finding enough users from 1+ billion people.

I Still don't use this stupid thing.

I hope they ban the app in our countries it is the most pathetic app out there. Snapchat is one of the biggest reasons for that dumb selfie culture.

The comment has no merit, in India there are over 300 million smartphone users out of which over 125 millions are 4G data users. 4G data plans in india are most affordable in the world offering 1gb per day. Millions of affordable smartphones powered by Octa core and Quad core processors having minimum 2 to 3 RAM are being sold in India every month, I think it's enough for a App like Snapchat to work without lag.

After reading this comment, I went to download this ghatiya app and give it a rating it deserves, only to find that my countrymen have bombarded it with 1 star ratings. Proud and happy that we still have patriotism left and we don't take any national insult lying down. Take that you ghatiya beghairat app!!

You clearly haven't heard of Reliance Jio 4G

Just went and gave it 5 stars on Google Playstore even though I hate the app

Did anyone check the article or google the news completely, one of the former employee who left the company said that the ceo said that.

Unfortunate the way news is shared nowadays.Agree he might have said that but still there is valid proof except one of the employees.

If the CEO hasn't said that then let him come and clarify. or offer an apology.

He didn't say it publicly ,he "allegely" said it in one of his meeting according to one of the employees who is not part of the company now.

And as Riddle pointed it out 4G penetration is big in India now due to Jio and his free data he gave, even FB showed extra profit.

He could had said that,my point is in the way news is being shared, its defn getting promoted because of competition from other companies.

Imagine this a disgruntled former BJP member accusing Modi of saying something in a meeting, now would the news be shared like "Modi says this" and at that time if Modi doesn't come out to give an explanation the same people on social media who are right now talking ill of snapchat would say why should he give an explanation for some bitter former member who didn't get a seat or something.

Alas people these days are so gullible when it comes to anything printed in the press.

To download an app and give it a poor rating within hours of the new being printed is actually exactly what the snap generation is all about. The irony

.

But that's how these companies became billion dollar companies, now they are getting taste of thier own medicines.

How ,SC eventhough kiddish had something new,now fb making this news trend which btw is happening in a defamation case is getting taste of their own medicine?

Hilarious some people have started giving bad rating to Snapdeal instead of snapchat :))) oh wow.

even if FB didn't make it trend it should have spread through what's app or even snap chat itself. This is the precise problem with such apps as any news reaches to millions within no time whether it's true / fake or unsubstantiated doesn't matter.

Also after initially few people give 1 rating then it will become 'cool' for others to do same.

PS : I came to this news by TOI & Reddit (not in FB so no idea about its trends) so you cannot hold any one org as main reason.

I do agree on what you are saying ,but here is the thing trending aspect of fb has been pretty much criticized ,and considering SC is direct competition to fb one can never say with complete surety that it didn't interfere in promoting it.

Two things here:
1)Headline click bait news shared by most fb pages of news outlets and jingoistic pages.
2)Overreaction by our people ,some of them even gave snapdeal bad rating.

As I said not familiar with FB or its trends but I have read about the fake news spreading like wildfire there or even in WhatsApp.

We have atleast 30 Crore people with access to Internet so even if fraction of people are more than stupid it will be a huge number.

End of day this is how Social media works and I don't see any reason this will stop in future. Why would FB give up a reason to undermine one of its competerors? Recently there is new about how UBER tried different tricks against its main competerot Lyft.i don't think there is any morality left in this game.

There was never any morality to begin with we all know what Bill Gates did to Steve initially. But as educated citizens don't think we are rational enough.

If more people are rational then this business model would be not be there in first place anyway :)

Steve himself no Saint though :))

Thanks to Mukesh Ambani, Reliance and Jio 4G users are increasing day by day. In the last 6 months indian telecom industry have changed a lot. Everyday there are new plans coming up and all these operators who were looting us are now forced to give us free data, unlimited calling etc.

What he doesn't know that Indian celebrities have huge followings and fan bases. It is easier to reach large amount of people. Considering this information is from a disgruntled employee, he may have played with his actual words.

But I wanted water cooler :danish

We can't exchange now, this is the policy of Nemat Banaspati. Aaglay program main aap ratings 4.7 pay wapis laein aur phir aap koo water cooler meelay ga.
