I think may be he is paid to talk like this when he is stating opposite to the obvious. Haris has been praised and been remembered by commentators of NZL AUS and SA because he was pleasing to watch with ample time to play his shots and not bullied by bouncers. He is the most comfortable batsman against pace that pak have. Yes he some issues getting bogged down after his usual 30 n 40s against top sides which he needs to fix and his conversion rate from 50 to 100. But this is his first LOI game after 2 years. To highlight he steadied the ship with Fakhar where notably in this series pak top order failed in every match.
Good u removed Azhar ali from openeing..now please remove that mental midget too...ur eleven looks good.sohaib can come at 3 while babr as an opener.

I have seen the interview, Wasim did not mean that Haris is bad. He meant he did not see any thing special from Haris because haris was not in domestic circuit or any where else. After injury, he hardly played cricket. That what Wasim meant

Needs to be permanent in the side. Likes pace, struggles when pace is off the ball and when spinners are on.
Strike rate really needs to improve, each time I've seen him reach 50 his strike rate has been around late 60s to 70s then he will get out.
His development has been stagnated since the 2015 World Cup, could have been a decent batsman for Pak by now.

Never seen such cricket fans like we have in Pakistan, I mean after just 1 ODI innings, he has become the "best" over-night. Well we need players who scores centuries like modern day ODI cricket.
Haris innings was good. His place in the team should be subjected to his consistency in his performance.

Well the rest of the lads aren't even doing that.... Haris doesn't have to be the best player in the world, he just has to be better than his peers and that he is.
I'd take an injured and hobbling Haris over a fully fit Azhar every day of the week.
Excluding minnows:
- Haris has played 2 innings at #3 and averages 38 with 73 strike rate. He was top scorer of Pakistan in 1 match. Pakistan lost all those matches.
- Haris has played 5 innings at #4 and averages 39 with 74 strike rate. He was not top scorer of Pakistan in any of those matches. Pakistan lost all those matches.
- Haris has played 7 innings at #5 and averages 43 with 74 strike rate. He was top scorer of Pakistan in 2 of those matches. Pakistan tie 1 match, win 2 match and lost 4 of those matches. There was 1 match in which Haris was top scorer of Pakistan and Pakistan won that match.
So on conclusion:
- Haris's batting average is slightly below average compared to international standards.
- Haris's batting strike rate is lot below average compared to international standards.
- Haris has played only 1 inning so far which we can call as match winner. That was against New Zealand in UAE when he scored 85* runs although even in that game his strike rate was very low 78 and it was first Sarfraz and finally Afridi who actually scored big runs with high strike rate to win that game.
So Haris is may be special as per current Pakistani standards but he is definitely nothing special as per international standards. And I think thats what Wasim Akram was saying.

Dont know what the fuss is about, Wasim didnt say he was useless or didnt deserve to be in the side. He only said he wasnt anything special, an opinion which i tend to agree with wholehartedly.
He made a half century today, got in with the team 11/2 and steadied the ship. However he took a painstakingly long while to get there. 74 balls, strike rate of 67 which is imply unacceptable in the modern game. Sure you can explain the slow start because of the situation when he arrived at the crease, but then he shouldve stayed there longer to make up for it by accelerating once he got to 50.
Again however, that doesnt mean i think he shouldnt be in the side.. based on current form(his last 10 outings) he should be, but i dont believe he is the solution to any of our batting woes. His strike rate is too low consistently across his career and he doesnt exactly convert every start into a big hundred to somehow compensate for it. In short, current form, better than a couple of guys in the side but overall he isnt cut out for it.

The stats would tell you that. But also consider the lack of support in each of those matches and the match situations. The strike rate is low because of that. He alone cannot win all the matches. With better support he can be good.

Asad Shafiq is one of the worst players to ever play ODIs.
The team has far too many grafters(Haris, Babar and Sarfraz) and not nearly enough dashers. Haris Sohail is basically useless at 5 unless wickets fall early. This is the sort of team that is good for scores of 260-280 whereas the rest of the world operates in the 290-330 range.
In modern ODIs you can only afford 2 grafters at most. The rest need to be players who score quick and at the very least have the ability to score a 30-35 ball 50.
And yet Haris was warming the bench for the first three games - beggars belief.

Where did I say he was the best in my post?
He's an improvement at the top of the order that can handle pace bowlers. I stated he needs to improve, and then also stated his development has stagnated and could have been a DECENT batsman for Pak.
He's performed when he's gotten the chance and he does have aspects to improve on, if he's not given the chances then he won't. No point continuing with Azhar Ali or Hafeez.

Haris is definitely a very good batsman, a quality batsman according to Pakistan standards. With that being said I still think he deserves to be a permanant fixture in our middle order. He can do what Hafeez and Malik can't..... bat well. He can rotate strike and hit the big shots when needed but he's at his best when he is partnered up with a batsman like Fakhar or Sharjeel. He's a not a finished article by any means but he is a very good batsman who needs to play consisently for Pakistan rather than see tuk tuk from The Professor and his BFF Shoaib Malik also featuring Azhar "Slow n Steady" Ali.

I havent Haris in any great depth since his comeback but from the bits i have seen he a good player of pace, he looks like he has time. He plays well through mid wicket and straight but his back lift prevents him playing fluently through the covers off the front or back foot. His weakness seems to be playing spin, he lacks the power to hit boundries and has struggled to rotate the strike against them.

Always prefered waqar!
Alot of people on here hate on waqar, but whatever waqar's limitations as a coach, he always tried his best for pak, something, i don't believe can be said for wasim!

Actually a lot of people on here don't hate Waqar. They prefer him over Wasim.
I stopped liking Wasim ever since the Jstice Qayum report and the match fixing fiasco. Also the allegations that Wasim would force Atta ur Rehman to match fix.

Not just Wasim. I saw Razzaq defending Malik decision to play him ahead of Harris because Harris is not a world class talent. These people have IQ level of 10 years old. I can't believe they played so much cricket yet have zero smartness or cricket understanding.

I don't think Wasim is someone who can be a good coach. He's one of those once in a lifetime bowlers who just knew how to bowl instinctively and wouldn't be able to explain technically, why what he did, worked.
There are stories from Rameez how he'd just practice something new in the nets a day or so before a game and be able to implement it on match day. Manjrekar too has said something similar about Tendulkar. But Sachin would probably be able to analyze it in hindsight and figure it out, whereas Wasim could well be just a gut-instinct type of player. That's probably why his commentary comes across as boring.

On topic, I sort of agree. I think Pak fans should expect a Hafeez kind of career from Haris Sohail. He'll be great to watch here and there and make average contributions rest of the time.

Back when Akram said this, he was right. Haris has never played the way he played last night.
Even then Harris with 1 leg would have been better then someone like Malik.
Wasim doesn't even follow our domestic cricket. Can't forget when Babar got injured against England in the test series and the commentators asked him regarding replacement and he looked lost he didn't even know the names of players on bench. Shameless person. Shouldn't be commentating in our games i will take Bazid Khan over him.

You're filtering those stats to suit your needs, ignoring his century against the Windies and games before the CT (why he was then selected for the tournament). Include alot oft he period most last world cup and he ends up with an average of over 40 and s sr of around 80 odd. Not bad at all.
Add in he could bowl a few handy overs, I fully understand why he was selected ahead of Haris, who also does not field as well.
Things have changed now, with Malik looking uninterested and Sohail possibly improving his striking.

Now that we have the stats aside, let's debunk your chota admi mentality. This thread is about Haris Sohail being nothing special, not about Shoaib Malik's form leading to the CT. Haris always has problems after 50 runs, but that didn't prevent fans without bias glasses from realizing that he was once in a decade kind of batsman for Pakistan.
Let's also address your Malik obsession. Malik had a purple patch, sure. He has had those purple patches spread throughout his entire career. But he has always come short in tournaments, and his performance overseas is always a suspect (even during his purple patch).

I had a one sentence post, which actually mentioned the period before the CT too.
My point is, that around the time when Akram made these comments, Malik was ab etter choice and if we look at the possible reasons for the selectors, they would have included his lower order hitting in 2017, his century against the windies and his fifties batting lower down. Couple that with his bowling and he was a better option than Haris.
But nw it is different. That is all I will say on that as I do not want to defend Akram much further as he knows nothing of Pakistan cricket haha

Malik has NEVER been a better choice tha haris!
Well he said so far few years ago which in my opinion still holds true, I have not seen anything special in him even now but he is better than few others in the team and definitely better than Asif Ali (Poor mans Afridi) and Malik.

Technically and ability wise both are not comparable. Hafeez was an all rounder and now he can play some good innings on occasions, he was never technically as good as Haris Sohail. There is a reason Haris averages 50+ in FC while Hafeez averages in 30s. Haris ODI record is also super with average in 46-47 at SR of around 85.
Malik and Hafeez were never specialist batsmen, they were all rounders until due to action issues that started concentrating more on their batting. Hafeez and Malik’s ODI career average isnt of a modern day ODI batsmen. Though Hafeez on his day can take the game away and had really good few years in LOIs in the last decade but he cant be compared to a technically superior batsmen like Haris Sohail.
Its a shame injuries effected the career of Haris Sohail.
Thank you all he had good performances only against SL, West Indies Zimbabwe. Malik is was and never will be as good as Harris. Malik is perhaps the most awful player to play 280 odd games.
Both Hafeez and Malik were a good support cast to main players like Inzimam and Yosuf. But once they retired and Pakistan slid in rankings these two assumed the role of 'seniors' in the team and have been playing under this tag. Reality is that they are not some legends to still be in the team post 35. Someone like Dhoni we can understand as he is a legend and undisputed GUN players during his peak to still be carried by his team as he is still likely to contribute. He doesn't watch domestic cricket. Mostly on commentary when he talks about domestic players it's their PSL performance he refers too.

Wasim Akram mentioned yesterday in an interview, that he never noticed Haris Sohail, but after today's innings he ranks him very high, the way he played and the temperament he showed.

I agree. KK has a history of turning players into presidents.
Harris is the opposite of Hafeez actually just check his record he is extremely consistent but before yesterday had never played a stand out knock but very rarely he fails and is arguably the best player of seam and swing in Pakistan
Someone asked him a question about mental conditioning and his reply was straight out of 1950s. He casually uses phrases like chappair karata chand karata, in general as well he is out of touch with times.

If I remember well..In the 2015 WC it was Wasim who was against playing Sarfraz when opening was not clicking for PAK team..
And once Sarfraz was injected in the team he proved all his critics wrong including WASIM vs SA ..
Although his form has dipped since a long time now..
So lets hope Haris plays consistent good knocks in future matches which will be match winning for PAK inshaAllah

It has proven time and again that Wasim isn't as bright as an analyst compared to his bowling. He may know a thing or two about seam positions, etc.

Sometimes I feel bad for young Pak players. There is way too much of scrutiny by media, ex players. If I was Harris, I won’t feel good about myself after hearing such comments from a legend like Wasim. At least give the poor guy 10 consecutive games before judgement.
I am not a conspiracy theorist but i genuinely feel Malik has some good connections in PCB and media. He had it easy for 20 years.
