Q. It's a big game tomorrow, the last one week, how has the world changed for you, because now like till around this time last week, you are confident about getting in there and after that, things seemed to have changed. What is the situation now with the team?

SARFARAZ AHMED: Definitely it is a tough thing for us, but after the match, we give two days rest for the players out of the wicket. But after three days -- before three days, we practising hard. So morale is very high for us. The tournament is now open now, so we have a chance. So we are focussing match by match. So hopefully we will try to win tomorrow's match.

Q. You were in South Africa earlier this year for a series. You just lost that series. It was a very competitive series. How much can we read into that series loss against South Africa, or was it a totally new team, totally new vibe, everything?

SARFARAZ AHMED: If you talk about the South Africa series, it's different. Bilateral series, different type of pressure. We played good cricket but unfortunately we didn't win the series.

But we are very hopeful to against South Africa. In the World Cup, we go against South Africa, it's good for Pakistan, so hopefully we will try for our best.

Q. Sarfaraz, psychologically, how disturbed are you that you are not there where you should be?

SARFARAZ AHMED: I don't think so, but everything is fine. Certainly psychological we see as the pressure as a captain if you lost against India in a World Cup match, people will think we beat; we lost first time in a World Cup.

But we all are okay. We all are backing ourselves, so hopefully we will bounce back in tomorrow's match.

Q. Looking at the South African team, who are the threats you should be aware of?
SARFARAZ AHMED: Not thinking about only the one player. We all know South Africa have good players on their team. So we are all focussing for the whole team.

Q "After losing to India, is the media more dangerous for you or social media?"

A (Laughing) "Media and social media are similar, this is not in our hands. So much is happening, you can't stop anyone. Teams lose and win also, as they used to in the past - if these outlets were available in the past then people might realise how much these things hurt. Now there is social media so people say or write whatever they want. Incidents are happening with the guys and they do psychologically affect the boys. These things shouldn't happen. People see things and hear things and then do these things. They know it's cricket and they forget after a day or 2, but these things keep going on and on and eventually the players are affected and these incidents happen. No one should be abusive, criticise on the cricket, no problem with that"

Q "You won CT 2 years ago and now it's different, how do you feel that you were a hero 2 years ago and now people are criticising you so much. 2nd, should we expect changes to the team tomorrow?"

A "I have always said that cricket is something that can take you high and the next day drop you. I tried to make sure that I don't take myself to such a high, so that if I fall I can't control it. So I tried to remain the same way throughout. Good and bad times happen in everyone's career, all cricketers have seen good or bad times. I stay around some good people who support me in good and bad times and they are with me now also. Hard times are from Allah and I will try my best to come out of it, as a captain and as a team and I will try to perform for my team also. As for team changes, we have made a few changes. The pitch has some grass so we'll decide before the toss"

Q "Former cricketers who have been through this stage themselves in the past are now provoking people, what would you say about that?"

A "I have said that if these things like social media were there in the past then people would realise how difficult it is. You can't stop anyone because there are so many things now. People make videos, there's no personal life. These things affect our families as they see these things. The guys are facing all these things, there's also the team pressure. I just request these people to talk about cricket. Our fans, Pakistani fans are very emotional and when we win, they raise us high and when we lose, they are very angry. Their anger is legitimate but I think that we are even more down-heartened at losing than they are because we know we are playing for Pakistan. We try to win but we accept that we didn't play well as a team and that's correct"

"If I saw anything to them then they will get more upset because in their eyes, we aren't even cricketers. I can't say anything because if I do, then they will say why did he reply, they are sitting like a God on TV"

Q "Can you share how much you are hurt by these incidents? There was a clip of someone using abusive language, and during the India-Pakistan match you were seen yawning so what did you feel upon seeing that?"

A "I yawned, I didn't commit a sin, also that happened after a break during the game. It's a normal thing. Everyone has gotten a lot of views and made money of it, good for them, due to me someone benefited"

Q "What message would you give to the fans?"

A "My message is that the fans have always supported us so they should keep that going in the upcoming matches"

Q "In Pakistan's campaign, the top 3-4 batsmen haven't been able to convert their 50s to 100s. How much difference does that make, that the top 3 haven't been able to make a lot of runs?"

A "In the England series, pitches were a major factor. The pitches we got in that series compared to the pitches in the World Cup were very different. Our top order have made runs but haven't been able to convert those into big runs. We have discussed this with the boys and I am hopeful that we will convert 40s and 50s in the upcoming games. The teams in this World Cup, their top orders are doing well. So we will try to ensure our top order performs well and then we can put up a good target or chase any total"

Q "You met the PM before the WC and he also recommended you to bat first, you didn't take that advice and lost the match, do you have any regrets?"

A "I have the tweet also. Imran bhai said that if the pitch is wet and according to the conditions, you should plan. So I think we tried to do that. We made a team decision and we all thought we should bowl first there. We also kept the rain in mind. When Babar and Fakhar were batting, we were only 9 runs behind DLS. We lost 2 quick wickets which is why the margin suddenly increased"

Q "In the England series the batting performed well, the bowling struggled a bit. In the World Cup, what area do you think you're behind in?"

A "I think we need to improve in all aspects if we are to win upcoming matches. We practised well in the last 3 days and we hope to perform well in remaining games"

Q "After SL won yesterday, the tournament is open. Do you think you can beat SA like you did in the CT and turn things around?"

A "These things can happen, in the CT it was also against SA. We will try to comeback against SA tomorrow and play our best cricket to win"

Q "There was a lot of talk in the media about grouping and there were reports that you said you won't go alone so can you elaborate on that?"

A "There is no such things or groupings, like Hafeez bhai said, these things come up after we lose only. When we win it doesn't happen. The guys are united and committed and want to perform for the team"

Q "SA have also struggled a bit, do you think the teams are equally balanced for tomorrow's match?"

A "Position wise we are equally balanced and both teams will try to win, we will try our best to play good cricket. We played a series against them so we know the team a little bit so we're hopeful of doing well"

Lot of expectations on this game - no option but to win or pack bags ...

Sarfaraz Ahmed is adamant defeat to India last time out won’t be playing on Pakistan’s mind in the slightest when they take on South Africa at Lord’s.

Pakistan have won just one of their five matches at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 – an impressive 14-run triumph over hosts England – but lost by 89 runs to their biggest rivals India at Old Trafford in their most recent match.

They will have had a week to analyse that loss by the time they take to the field in London on Sunday, where they will try to down a Proteas side who similarly only have one victory to their name.

But skipper Sarfaraz insists his team won’t be focusing on the past and that the squad are confident of bouncing back in style at the home of cricket.

“Everything is fine after the India match,” he said. “It was tough for us but after the match, we gave our players two days’ rest. Then before three days, we were practising hard.

“Psychologically there is a pressure on you as a Pakistan captain if you lose against India in a World Cup match.

“People will think we are beaten but it’s not the first time we have lost to them in a World Cup, so it’s fine. We all are OK and we are all are backing ourselves, so hopefully we will bounce back.

“Morale is still very high for us. The tournament is now open now, so we have a chance and we are focussing match by match. Hopefully we can start by beating South Africa.”

The two sides contested a highly-competitive ODI series in South Africa back in January that Pakistan eventually lost 3-2.

That has whetted the appetite for this Sunday’s clash, although Sarfaraz believes it is foolish to read too much into those games six months on.

“If you talk about the South Africa series, it's different,” added Sarfaraz. “A bilateral series is a different type of pressure to a World Cup.

“We played good cricket but unfortunately we didn't win the series. We are very hopeful heading into the game against South Africa and we will try for our best.

Even if you don’t win, please show that you have some respect for the green cap tomorrow.

He could be talking about Shoaib Akthar here?

Out of all the pundits Shoaib Akthar is the most rude and dramatic.

For every field, Media analysts are indispensable part. More frustrations; poor choice of word (GOD). Sarfaraz should not bother about off field events.

I think he let the CT '17 affect him - sort of started believing his own hype - even if claims to have done otherwise inn this interview.

Not once did his body language exude confidence in the presence of Kohli during this WC. Right from the pre-tournament presser of all captains to the actual game.

Hopefully sarfraz and others failures will get the boot after this world cup. Fresh start and remove all passengers. Both test and ODI team has been effected carrying this loser.

I'm glad to see Sarfraz handling it very well... some of the stuff I have seen on social media is appalling. One of the idiots making a video of Sarfraz while he is in the mall with his son calling Sarf a pig is despicable and pathetic. The videos then were shared to the pleasure of our elite middle class and they shared it for everyone to see.. Now cricketers are also facing the same sort of abuse. It doesn't stop there and now it is a syndrome that any random guy does to get their 5 mins of fame.

I didnt see him complaining about the same media when they were crediting him after CT 17, he shouldn’t be looking at what others say now.

If i was in PCB i would ban social media for these guys for the next month

We say that after every World Cup since 2003

We say that after every World Cup since 2003

Just look at the people in charge of national team since 2003.

2003: Waqar as captain (Was a bowling legend but a poor man manager and tactician)

2007: Inzimam (Great player but less said the better about other aspects)

2011: Bit better performance (However the captain was Afridi and coach was Waqar Younis)

2015: Again coach was Waqar Younis

2017-19: Sarfaraz as Captain and Mickey as coach (One is unfit and a non performer and other is a coach who was fired from his last role and his 3 assistants who have no achievements in their coaching career)

Whats so surprising about being poor when we kept on making poor decisions.

Don't worry Sarfi, Asians aren't mature enough. Just because Portugal won the Euro, did the fans really expect them to win the world cup? Naa. World cups are won by big dogs like France did after losing the Euro final. India will.......

Our players can't take critiscm .

Criticism or personal attacks? Can you even differentiate between the two? Sarfaraz got called a fat pig..how is that related to his cricketing ability mr expert?

I'm not even on about the personal attacks. If you go read that thread I have actually defended Sarfraz.

No person thinks they are God. He is making that comment due to the criticism he has received about the team and performances.

This average cricketer gets too much defence for his rubbish captaincy and awful performances.

agree on not going personally.. but wth on the yawning part. Yawning on the field is not a normal thing to do. It is not a Sunday Village Green match being played. Show some competitiveness man you are a professional cricketer.

Sarfaraz will be doing the same after his career is over. I guarantee it!

People like Imran Khan, Miandad, Ramiz Raja, Wasim Akram, Shoiab Akhtar etc also could not win any world cup matches against india. and now they are criticising Sarfaraz for his team's world cup loss against India. I am pretty sure that Sarfaraz will do the same in future after his playing days are over.:warner

Lol that’s so true. I saw razzaq commentary on their fielding.some one should ask him who dropped tendya in 2003..ex Pakistan cricketers are so funny 😂 😂😂😂

Sarfraz needs to calm down and focus on leading the team. His frustration is obvious and he seems distracted.

Ex-cricketers need to shut up and analyze constructively. Those who say it's not a big deal should listen to some of these fools speak on national television, as if they have won numerous World Cups for Pakistan.

How can they constructively talk about yawning in the middle of match and players partying and eating junk food before big game? When they look out of touch from cricket on the field. The thing is most of our players aren't only mediocre but they don't even work on their game to give any hopes. They consider themselves "stars" but their performances aren't better than minnow levels. We have barely won 2 games out of last 15. This should be embarrassing for our captain. This performance has been continuously going down the hill ever since 2017 ct final. The analysts can not defend them for that long.

They should have a blanket social media and main stream media ban. Yes they are playing bad.....the truth is they are 6th ranked team and performing as per that.

And agree some of the ex players are looking at their own past performances with rose tinted glasses!

"We bounce back."
This is what he said throughout the NZ series whenever we lost.
This is exactly what he said during the SA series after every single test match (we lost all three).

Hollow words from a hollow captain, nothing more.

**. It's not different, Sarfaraz. You lost because you played bad cricket then, and you started blaming your bowlers and screwed up your team. You are losing again because you are playing bad cricket again, and now you have started blaming Pakistani supporters.

You are just a bad cricketer. And you and your lot of idiots have frustrated the fans for so long, enough for them to literally lose their minds. I'm happy that social media and people are giving you a tough time, people are starting to take matters into their own hands which is the only way forward for this nepotism filled mediocre Pakistan cricket setup.

Need a complete overhaul after this WC. Sarfraz himself doesn’t merit a place in the team. He should take Malik, Shadab, Hassan, Imam and Asif with him also.

This is what he said in series against England too.

He kind of has memory issues. Surely he can't forget how SA white washed Pak in their sleep. Skills of most of our players are not going to change over night because it's a world cup. We were thrashed by Aus in UAE and we couldn't beat them from a winning position and everything in our favor. These guys are mentally so weak that even if they need 60 in 15 overs with 8 wickets you can bet on them to mess that as well.

How about winning a game for once with your own batting performance?

Don’t think he can. But if you’re the captain with your back against the wall that’s what you should deliver. Majority of our players are mental midgets including our best players like Babar. Can’t expect anything from these guys. What a joke

Feel bad for him. He could have been the finest captain of Omar Associates and been a hero for his neighborhood. Now everyone hates him.
