Has this year’s Asia Cup been cancelled? While there is no official word from the Asian Cricket Council (ACB), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief, Sourav Ganguly, told Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika that the tournament has been ‘cancelled’.

However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Ehsan Mani, told Sportstar on Wednesday that they are yet to hear anything from the Asian Cricket Council. PCB has the hosting rights for this year’s tournament.

“We are still waiting for the ACC to come back to us,” Mani, who is currently in England, said.

“They are making inquiries about certain (things). Maybe, Sourav knows something that I don’t know. That’s possible. But we have not heard anything from the ACC, so I can’t comment on that,” the PCB chief said.

Asia Cup 2020: Sri Lanka is keen to host, says Ehsan Mani

The future of this year’s tournament, scheduled to be held in September, looked bleak as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic. But in its last meeting, the ACC had stated that it was still in conversation with the member boards.

A couple of weeks ago, Mani had told this publication that they have offered Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to swap the event. As per the original ACC policy, the official hosting rights for this year’s tournament are with the PCB, but with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refusing to send its players to Pakistan, there was a possibility that the tournament could have been played at a neutral venue.

There was a possibility of moving the tournament to the United Arab Emirates.

“We discussed it at the last ACC meeting and I spoke to Sri Lanka because we were uncertain about the situation in the UAE and Sri Lanka conveyed that the situation is much better there. So, we have asked for more details from Sri Lanka,” Mani had said then.

While he had clarified that it was still not ‘100 per cent confirmed’ that the island nation would host the tournament, Mani had indicated that the tournament could be held in Sri Lanka. However, with Ganguly's statement, the future of the tournament indeed looks bleak now.

Despite repeated attempts, ACC chief, Nazmul Hasan Papon, wasn’t available for a comment.

Looks like Ehsan Mani has not received minutes of meeting.

Please mark cc in future.

Thank you.

Bhaijaan.

Hard to see any multi-nation tournaments taking place this year.

Yes but there is a way to conduct yourself when you are head of BCCI.

He shouldn't be there in the first place. Has no say of his own. Just a puppet of the mighty Srinivasan. Srini is baying for blood and it will flow at ICC. He is out to take revenge on every one who targeted him. Interesting times ahead.

Srinivasan is gone. Hardly any power.

Ganguly came to power on the support of anti Srinivasan faction and the bjp faction.

Its Bcci which is going to take on ICC. Its a pan bcci feeling.

Seems the BCCI wants to organise every tournament and the FTP.

Too much power for one Board will never be a good thing.

Time for the ICC to show some courage.

I’ve got no issues with the World T20 not happening as long as the ACB don’t allow its players to play IPL during the same window.

CA will likely allow its players for IPL. They always do.

This has been said for about a decade. But ICC never shows up.

Very rude of Ganguly to make that announcement. Starting to lose all respect for him.

Ganguly is not a statesman nor an experienced administrator. The way he's conducting himself is exactly how you'd expect a former cricket to conduct himself if assigned an administrative position. This interview is a clear example.

He can lead all the domestic organizations, such as CAB and whatever, but having no formal education and or international experience, how can you expect him to come across as a mature professional? He's quite a weird choice as the BCCI president given that India is not lacking any qualified administrators any of whom it can bring in to lead BCCI.

Aussies will be the first board to send their acceptance if IPL is happening this year. Followed by CSA.

Ganguly has no formal education? Lol. Who told you?

He holds a commerce degree from one of Indias best graduate colleges. The notable alumni of that college include billionaires, well known scientists, politicians, actors, administrators etc etc.

He was born into an extremely rich family and was not some village paindu who didnt get education and couldn't even speak English.

CAB manages larger funds and population of cricketers than most cricket boards, he managed it for more than 4 years, thats more management experience than many others have.

Ganguly said what he knew. He knew Asia cup will not be played, he said it.

Media director of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Samiul Hasan Burney believes Sourav Ganguly’s claims that the Asia Cup 2020 stands cancelled has no merit and instead it’s up to the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) to decide on the fate of the tournament.

BCCI president Ganguly on Wednesday announced the cancellation of the Asia Cup. Even though the former India captain did not offer an explanation or reason behind it, the failure to decide a host nation seems to have reportedly pulled the plug on the tournament.

“In December, we have the first full series. Asia Cup 2020 has been called-off which was scheduled to take place in September,” Ganguly told ‘Sports Tak’ in an Instagram live session.

However, Hasan has countered Ganguly’s claims, saying an announcement of such importance can only be made by President of the ACC. “The statements made by Sourav Ganguly have no impact on proceedings. Even if he passes comments every week, they do not hold weight or merit,” Hasan said.

“The decision regarding the Asia Cup will be taken by the ACC. The announcement can only be made by the president of the Asian body Nazmul Hasan. To the best of our knowledge, the schedule of the next ACC meeting is yet to be announced.”

The PCB and the BCCI have been at loggerheads over the scheduling aspect of the Asia Cup. The 15th edition of the tournament was scheduled to be held in September and in May of 2019, the ACC confirmed that Pakistan will host the event. However, due to tensions between India and Pakistan, the BCCI requested the PCB to change the venue, or conduct India’s matches outside of Pakistan due to security concerns, preferably in the UAE.

In February this year, Ganguly had said that the Asia Cup will be staged in the UAE and that both India and Pakistan will play, but the claims were turned down by PCB chairman Ehsan Mani. Ever since, there and been back and forth information regarding the tournament before Ganguly announced its cancellation on Wednesday. But Hasan’s comments seem to provide another twist to it. Even BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury believes the Asia Cup still has a chance to go ahead.

“As far as I am concerned ACC management is working on Asia Cup 2020. They are also exploring other options if the tournament cannot be hosted on scheduled time,” he said

This bit is egregiously fake news. Anyone bothering to do any basic research on how Ganguly was chosen as president will discover that Srinivasan was the key powerbroker behind his appointment.

Irresponsible of Ganguly to break this news

But it is reality. No more multiteam events this year.

Even IPL if it happens will be shortened one round affair and atleast 30-40% intl players may not participate

No he wasnot. It was Amit Shah. Srinivasan wanted Brijesh Patel as bcci chief.

Thread is not about Ganguly's election.

Asia Cup in Pakistan was never going to happen in 2020 given political climate.

Now it is time for all parties to pivot to a face saving statement by ACC.

It is time Dada announces fate of ICC world T20 as well.

Bigotry? Lol.

CA will most likely allow its players. Thats the bottom line.

Will ‘most probably allow’ and it’s the bottom line?

This is why you can’t be taken seriously. You create a hostile environment for friendly Indian posters.

PCB has handled this pretty badly with their disjointed and regular statements and been made to look rather foolish.

They kept on making statements without really thinking about what they were saying or knowing what was actually going on.

As if the insult was not enough... now these statements. There's only one party that is looking foolish now. Can PCB just shut up already and professionally discuss the next course of action?

So, you think holding a "commerce" degree from some college is good enough to handle such a position? Say whatever you want about CAB, it is a domestic organization and we all know how those are run. Without any international or corporate management experience, it is a bizzare decision to put Ganguly in-charge. He'll likely learn on the job how to conduct himself but atm, he is showing no signs of being a polished administrator; which is not a surprise either.

Also, as someone else said here, you are one of the blind advocates of BCCI and anyone associated with it. I have hardly seen any post by you which is not based on jingoism. No need to defend everything BCCI, but maybe you can't help it.

Considering Jagmohan Dalmiya also held a commerce degree from the same uni and he is considered one of the best if not the best cricket administrator.

No you dont know how CAB is run. Its bigger than many small national cricket boards. Dont even think that big indian state boards are like domestic provincial boards of other countries. I am not even going into his experience of running his family businesses.

Ganguly was elected the Bcci President. No one put him there.

Just because Ganguly says things not palatable for pcb, he isnt polished? Bcci dont get along with PCB esp the present administrator, they are not going to do him any favours.

Ganguly said what he knew. If he usnt proved wrong then he did nothing wrong.

So, just because he held one of the degrees that Dalmiya held, makes him as good an administrator? What a nonsense argument!

We all know Dalmiya's experience, both domestic AND international, before stepping into the BCCI presidents role. Don't act so naive!

Ganguly was brought in because of close ties with the ruling party. Nothing else.

Ganguly is not the first BCCI president to make foolish remarks when it comes to matters with the PCB... his lack of maturity is a separate matter.

Your last line is the argument you put up for every single topic. Did I ever say that what he said was factually incorrect? No wonder you are viewed as a blind advocate of BCCI on this forum. Zero objectivity.

Please don't pass blind statements.
Ganguly has no ties with BJP before, he elected based on merit.

can you provide any proof for your false statements?
I am sure you cant.

He didn't really say anything wrong. The most likely outcome was that the Asia Cup would be postponed but PCB said they will await an official release from ACC on the matter, and that's what they did. I don't think there will be any more statements now.

It was mentioned above that Amit Shah played a part.

Which is true?

Yes the bjp faction supported Ganguly in the Bcci election. So did the anti Srinivasan faction. Shah made sure that all bjp faction votes fall to Ganguly as both Bjp biggies of Bcci, Jaitley and Thakur were in favour of Ganguly, they wanted Srini out at all costs.

Ganguly was the only one who was acceptable to both the bjp and the anti srini faction.

First you claimed Ganguly had no formal education. Its proven that he held the same degree as crickets greatest administrator.

Dalmiya started at CAB, same as Ganguly. Moved to Bcci after 4 years, same as Ganguly. Dalmiya was mentored by a Bcci president, same as Ganguly.

Ganguly is close to Trinamool. He and Dalmiya family both. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Ganguly was elected as he was the only candidate acceptable to both bjp and the anti srini faction.

Your claims on this thread come from watching how pcb and pakistan cricket is run. Bcci and indian cricket isnt run the same way.

Ganguly spoke the truth. Pcb started making stupid statements. ACC just confirmed what Ganguly said while PCB was talking about some meeting. The stupid statements come from PCB.

PCB has handled this pretty badly with their disjointed and regular statements and been made to look rather foolish.

They kept on making statements without really thinking about what they were saying or knowing what was actually going on.

What would you have said in these circumstances? I think this was the most diplomatic way to push back against Ganguly’s unprofessional behaviour.

I would have stated facts and just kept it to one person doing thevtalking for PCB.

Ganguly said what he knew. PCB was trying to make it look that no decision had been taken. While ACC said the same thing that Ganguly did.

Ganguly doesn't have any formal education which is relevant to the role that he's in. Holding a "commerce" degree doesn't mean anything. Even if it one of the multiple held by Dalmiya.

Dalmiya also headed the ICC. Again, everyone can see through your cherry picking. No need to be so naive.

Ganguly isn't a mature administrator and lacks experience.

No one said Ganguly lied. No one said PCB played it smartly. Stick to the argument.
