South Africa's chances of winning their ODI series in England improved exponentially just more than 24 hours before the start of the ODI rubber in Durham on Tuesday. Hold that thought: their chances will improve after the match.

That's the likely immediate impact of Ben Stokes' announcement on Monday that Tuesday's match would be his last 50-over international. "As hard as a decision as this was to come to, it's not as hard [as] dealing with the fact I can't give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore," the explosive allrounder wrote in a statement. "The England shirt deserves nothing less from anyone who wears it. Three formats are just unsustainable for me now."

England were in action on 11 of the first 17 days of July, and are scheduled to be busy on six more days before next month's three Tests against the South Africans. Something had to give, and for Stokes that was ODI cricket. His move will fuel the debate on the growing amount of cricket top players are expected to deliver, particularly in what increasingly is seen as the least fashionable format.

"Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give [captain] Jos [Buttler] and the rest of the team their all," Stokes wrote.

Whatever Stokes does or doesn't do on Tuesday, he won't be able to hurt South Africa for the rest of the series. But doubtless he will be determined to go out with a bang, especially as he will take his final bow on his home ground.

Stokes' batting average in his eight games against South Africa - 44.50 - is only just in the top half of the 10 teams he has faced, although they conceded one of his three centuries. He has a better bowling average against four teams than his South Africa mark of 36.57.

But he is always capable of the outrageous, and that scares opponents. Stokes hammered South Africa's bowlers to all parts for his 79-ball 89 in the opening match of the 2019 World Cup at the Oval, and then dived full length, super hero style, to take a reverse cup catch that denied Andile Phehlukwayo a six over midwicket.

Even so, whatever he does in Durham on Tuesday won't matter where it counts. Neither will whatever anyone does in the entire series - because it will not count for World Cup Super League points. Why, then, is it being played? Keshav Maharaj found himself in the invidious position of having to answer that question moments after he had talked up the importance of the standings that will decide which seven teams - besides hosts India - will qualify directly for next year's World Cup.

"It's good to have the Super League," Maharaj, who will captain South Africa in the absence of the injured Temba Bavuma, initially told a press conference on Monday. "It makes you play your best cricket and allows you to come up with various styles of play that you want to implement at the World Cup. I think it's a good system. You've got to play your best team at all times. I'm in favour of it.

So what was the point of the pointless series that will start on Tuesday? "It's important for us as an ODI unit to keep playing together. The more you play the better you get. It's still an international cricket game, so there's enough motivation. And it's build-up for series that do carry points. I'm glad we're playing it leading up to an important summer and year for us. In the next two years there are a lot of ICC events coming up, and it's a nice way of finding combinations you want to play going forward."

There was a more emphatic answer to the question in the fact that Kagiso Rabada has been rested for the series. Had Super League points been on the line, especially considering South Africa are 11th in the standings, there can be no doubt Rabada would have been picked.

When: July 19, 2022; 2pm Local Time

Where: Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, Durham

What to expect: Who can say? This will be the first list A game played at the ground this year. In the four in 2021, Surrey's 280/8 in a semi-final against Durham was the only total higher than 230. Seamers took all three of the four-wicket and all four of the three-wicket hauls on this pitch last year.

Team News

England: Having lost four of the six white-ball games they played against India in the space of 10 days, England are under pressure. Thing is, it's difficult to see what personnel changes could make a positive difference.

Possible XI: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, David Willey, Craig Overton, Brydon Carse, Reece Topley

South Africa: The state of Quinton de Kock's bruised finger was the only significant issue in the visitors' camp. He's fit and available.

Possible XI: Janneman Malan, Quinton de Kock (wk), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj (c), Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi

What they said:

"There's been lots of games in a very short space of time, which has been a challenge as well. It would be nice to have a day to reflect a bit and not always be thinking. It's been busier than I think it would be normally." - Jos Buttler on his team's workload.

"There are two ways to look at it. They've been playing more cricket than us and have found combinations, but it is a point we could capitalise on and build some confidence in our ODI unit before the World Cup next year." - Keshav Maharaj on England's cluttered calendar.

Squads:

England Squad: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w/c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Craig Overton, David Willey, Brydon Carse, Reece Topley, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, Philip Salt, Matty Potts

South Africa Squad: Quinton de Kock(w), Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Keshav Maharaj(c), Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lizaad Williams, Andile Phehlukwayo, Khaya Zondo, Kyle Verreynne, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen

Cracking toss for SA to win.

England will be bowling in the hottest part of the afternoon and it looks like a flat pitch.

Chance for 350 here and a super tough chase.

Jos bottler has got it wrong even in selection now.
Sam Curran and Matthew Potts are not LOIs players at all.
These trundlers should be nowhere near the ODIs side.

Why didn't England produce pitch like this for India ODIs.Those were absurd pitches throughout the series.

Curran has started well here, 1-9 off four new ball overs.

Potts is on his debut, who can know how he will perform in the long run without giving him a chance in this series at the very least.

Absurd considering that India won. Same pitches would've been the best English wickets of all time had India lost 0-3. Unfortunately , we are not as bad as the Asian teams who toured last year :rabada2

No man you are the best team ever. I say they should hand over the upcoming world cup T20 trophy to your amazing team and that 2023 world cup trophy as well and other trophies as well.

All the teams should forfeit and India the GOAT team should be handed over those trophies.

As they have been winning all the trophies for so long now.

I would expect England to chase any target south africa set on this flat road.
Pitches like these would have been used against India.

222 /2

78 runs partnership so far. Two well set batsmen on the crease. Need some big hitting

Extremely flat pitch, 40+ Celsius, and swing less then 0.4 degrees on average lol.

Still expect a 350 score. Could be chaseable in these conditions to be fair.

It can be chased , at the same time there will be scoreboard pressure , England batting has not been in best nick , so SA if they bowl right places , can win this.

Jos buttler is a dumb captain.

Brydon carse has been the best bowler by far and bottler didn't let him complete his quota of overs.

Sooner they get rid of bottler as a captain it will be better for England.

South Africa have posted a good total in absence of Bavuma. Now question is if they can win or not as Bavuma has a good record in terms of win/loss.

Not a single six in the innings but South Africa have 333 on the board

It’s disrespectful to call him “Bottler”.

You address him by his name, even if you are not impressed by his performance.

A solid but unremarkable start. England seemingly on a strategic level are trying to keep wickets in hand and wear down the South African bowlers & fielders early in this heat, then increase the run rate as the innings goes on.

Required rate is over 7 .

England keeping wickets in hand , but if they lose couple of quick ones they will come under pressure

England going along nicely. They are gradually edging up their run rate and will probably need to get 8 an over later on, which they are more than capable of doing.

Roy holes out for 43 after a fighting knock. He’s not in form at all and is doing his very best to get the ball past the fielders. Just isn’t happening for him at the moment.

The last two days at work has been like working in a sauna. I cannot imagine playing top level sport in this heat.

Respect to the professional athletes who do this day in day out.

Ball getting slower and lower as game goes on. Tough chase for Eng

Eng need 181 runs from 120 balls (20 overs)

T20 time

Maharaj bowled out with 19 to go

Eng will be happy with that

170 runs off 18 overs for Root and Livingstone. 9.44 RRR now…

South Africa spinners have been brilliant so far.

Tied England in knots.

Looking tough this for England.

RRR is 10 now. With Root, Livingstone, Moeen Ali, and Sam Curran, it’s still doable, but can sense it falling short in the end.

Livingstone fails under pressure yet again.

England gonna lose

Don't want to sound harsh on Stokesy but for the life of me I just couldn't figure out his approach in ODI against India and even today. Have watched him for many years and the hyper active Jumping Jack which
he displayed was never his game. I rate him verry highly in ODI format he has one of the best temperament, knows which shots to play and when to accelerate.

2nd I am not a fan of reverse sweep when you play it in the middle of the innings in ODI, Unless the ball is on the leg stump our outside it just doesn't make any sense. I simply don't like the shot selection by English team. Using feet is a better option and I wouldn't mind if a player gets out stumped.

England Seriously need to sort out their ODI batting approach. they need to play more percentage cricket and convention strokes in the middle period where they keep throwing wickets to ugly swipes.

If Stokes has to leave any format should have been T20, that's not really his game him retiring from ODI is a serious loss to this format. You can only wish him luck

I really like ODI format, It really test your technique and temperament, can't slog your way out of it have seen some very exciting matches recently

Livingstone fails under pressure yet again.

England gonna lose

The pitch has gone slow and his leg side swipes wouldn't help on such surface rather should have been trying lifting over the cover. This lad has been a massive disappointment and result of quick glory earned on ultra flat surface

Petty poor from him

Livingstone's game is too risky for odis.

Time to bring Harry brook as no.4 as early as possible.

Sam Billings must be cursing his luck. Poor guy Carried drinks for past few years with the team to just get dropped when middle order slots are vacant.

Buttler is playing with lot of pressure due to captaincy responsibility. His batting seems to be be affected due to that. Earlier he used to play with free mind and score runs quickly and freely.

England need to make a couple of changes to the team I think. The Livingstone experiment in 50 over cricket isn’t working. His bowling isn’t good enough to keep him in the team either. With Stokes stepping out for the next match we are likely to see Harry Brook come in; and Livingstone will only get so many chances.

Too early to say that.

Buttler generally takes his time early in the innings and then accelerates quickly.

Root trying his best here but the game is already gone. Might end up getting one of those infamous “century in a losing cause” :P

England finally having a go at the target with 7 overs left?

Strange performance.

Root falls short. Good battling knock but not much support for him sadly

England ODI batting need a relook. I would let Butler open and bring bairstow at no.4. Billing should get a call in now

England one-day side looks a little broken right now. And suprisingly its the batting that looks fragile.

Maybe Buttler needs to be batsman-captain and give up the gloves. Billings could be tried as wicketkeeper-batsman. And bring in Harry Brook

This got increasingly slow as inning progressed. on such wickets playing with the straight bat is a wiser options. They had an excellent platform but the middle order has been the culprit here. Root showed how to play on such surface.

This defeat will hurt england now coming back on a series loss against India

Rip S-norte-r of an over. Thats game done. I think englands batting needs a slight tweak they are going to gun ho with aggressiveness and its been found out not for 4th game in a row. At lords their bowlers bailed them out.

Not impressed with his captaincy though you need to give him some time. Removing Topely against India when he was on song and India was 3 down and then he bought ALI. I am not really feeling comfortable with his captaincy however you have to give him few more series.

First Morgan and then stokes. England need to regroup, get their selection and batting order/approach sorted before its too late.

If anything the batting failed this time because they didn’t attack enough and the RRR went too high. They need to find the right balance.

England v South Africa: Ben Stokes' final ODI ends in 62-run defeat

Ben Stokes' final one-day international ended in another England defeat as South Africa won a sweltering series opener in Chester-le-Street by 62 runs.

The world champions, beaten 2-1 by India last week, were first worn down in the oppressive heat by Rassie van der Dussen's fine 134.

He combined with Aiden Markram, who hit 77 off 61 balls, in a controlled stand of 151, the backbone of the tourists' 333-5.

England reached 102-0 in response but lost their way against the Proteas spinners as the baked pitch tired.

Stokes, who announced on Monday that this match on his home ground would be his last 50-over international, was out lbw for five.

Joe Root made 86 from 77 balls but was bowled trying to hit out as the run-rate increased out of control.

After Root fell the final three wickets quickly followed and England were bowled out for 271 in 46.5 overs.

Victory gives South Africa a 1-0 series lead going into the second match on Friday at Emirates Old Trafford.

Including the Twenty20 series loss to India, this is England's fifth white-ball defeat in seven games over 12 days at the start of Jos Buttler's reign as captain.

South Africa's line-up may not be filled with superstars like India's but this victory was equally as convincing.

The conditions were difficult for players and spectators alike. As temperatures reached 38 degrees, players were seen using ice towels while members of the crowd required medical attention in the stands.

England bowler Matthew Potts only managed four overs on debut before having to leave the field because he was "struggling with effects of the heat".

With the bat, England did not seriously threaten to chase a good total.

Openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow were unusually restrained before Roy hit spinner Keshav Maharaj to long-off for 43 and Bairstow was trapped lbw by Markram for 63.

Buttler also fell to spin, caught and bowled off a leading edge to Tabraiz Shamsi for 12, as England failed to bat out their 50 overs for the fourth ODI in succession.

Only Root offered any real resistance with a typically classy knock but, with wickets falling around him, England were never in the game.

Anrich Nortje, one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket, bowled the Yorkshireman as he swiped across the line before proving far too good for the lower order as he finished with 4-53.

Despite the high score, South Africa's innings often felt low-key, not helped by the increased number of drinks breaks introduced because of the weather.

England struggled for wickets despite the return of leg-spinner Adil Rashid to their ranks.

South Africa opener Janneman Malan helped lay a platform with 57 from 77 balls before hitting Moeen Ali to deep mid-wicket and afterwards Van der Dussen largely accumulated through ones and twos rather than entertaining with boundaries.

Just 40 of the right-hander's runs came from hitting the rope, with no sixes in the whole South Africa innings.

Markram was marginally more aggressive in the pair's 20.2 overs stand. They both fell in the same over of Liam Livingstone spin - Markram caught at deep mid-wicket and Van der Dussen bowled trying to force a shot off the back foot - which helped England finish the innings well.

Only 46 came from the last six overs with Brydon Carse, the third Durham player in England's XI on their home ground, particularly effective - though the total still proved far out of England's reach.

Stokes is retiring from 50-over cricket because he says the intense schedule no longer allows him to play all three formats.

He looked emotional when given an ovation at the start of only his third England appearance on his home ground.

Potts' absence meant Stokes had to bowl more overs than expected and he was England's most expensive bowler.

He conceded six boundaries in his five overs, often hobbling - a sign of his fitness struggles that have played a part in his decision.

With the bat, Stokes was out to part-time spinner Markram, trying to reverse sweep his 11th ball.

The Riverside rose to its feet to applaud him off but it was a disappointing and premature end for an all-rounder unable to repeat his famous innings in the 2019 World Cup final.

This South African team is very good. Good batting unit and pace attack. Spin attack looks better than England.

Dussen is underrated. Among the batsmen who plays in top 4 batting positions, He is probably one of the top white ball batsman since his debut. Their best batsman who plays exceptionally well under pressure.

Janneman malan is lovely batsman to watch.
Markram has started delivering good knocks.

Klassen recently scored century against india.

Then they have experience of Miller and decock.

England bowling was toothless. They are missing woakes, archer and wood.

Now that Morgan and Stokes are gone England should groom a reliable no.4 for 2023 worldcup.
Harry brook should be in the playing 11 in the next match in place of Stokes.
Buttler should stick to no.5
Livingstone is useless in odis and should be dropped from the squad. England can't afford to have both moeen and Livingstone in the playing 11.

Don't know why potts was selected ahead of Luke wood, David payne, Sam cook etc.

My team for next odi :

Roy/salt
Bairstow
Root
Harry brook
Buttler
Moeen
Sam Curran
Overton
Carse
Rashid
Topley
