Warriors all-rounder Wihan Lubbe and Momentum Multiply Titans fast bowler Lizaad Williams, have both received their maiden call-ups to the Proteas. Lubbe has been included in the T20 squad while Williams has been named in both the ODI and T20 squads for the inbound limited overs tour by Pakistan at the end of this month.

Sisanda Magala of the Imperial Lions has also received the nod for both squads, while Migael Pretorius of the VKB Knights has been included into the T20 squad, both having previously been selected for various Proteas squads without being capped in a match. The Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras’ Kyle Verreynne, who has represented the Proteas in the ODI format returns to that squad and is also called
up to the T20 team for the first time.

There are recalls for batsman Aiden Markram and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder to the ODI squad to play Pakistan. The pair last appeared in 2019 and have since had to overcome injuries to contest for places in white-ball cricket.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ Daryn Dupavillon also makes a return to the ODI squad after making his
international debut in March of 2020.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today named the squads to be captained by Temba Bavuma that will consist of 22 players for the Betway ODI Series and 17 for the KFC T20 series. The extended squads are necessary in terms of CSA’s Covid-19 protocols. The tour runs from April 2-16 and consists of three ODIs and four T20 International matches.

In terms of an agreement between CSA and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), those players awarded Indian Premier League (IPL) contracts will be released early to join their respective teams.

CSA Convenor of Selectors, Mr Victor Mpitsang, commented:“We’re very excited about these two squads that we have selected for our home tour against Pakistan.

The ODI squad boasts the calibre of talent we have in South African Cricket and I’m really excited to see how they go about the series. We have enough experience within that squad to provide a good challenge to Pakistan when they arrive on our shores.

“The T20 squad is also a good indication of our depth as a cricket nation with the loss of some of the senior players to the IPL. We have a massive 18 months of T20 cricket coming up, with two ICC T20 World Cups for players to contest. We as a Selection Panel are looking forward to seeing what the new additions to the team will contribute to the Proteas’ system.

“The Betway T20 Challenge created a good headache for us in showing off the many talented cricketers we have in our system. It’s a good headache to have and we’re confident that we have a squad that can and will ask a lot of questions of our visitors and make the nation proud.

“To Temba (Bavuma) our new captain, all the best to him and the rest of the teams for the upcoming tour,” he concluded.

CSA is pleased to announce the teams that will represent the nation as follows:

If SAF players are unavailable or giving preference to IPL I'm sure PCB should have given preference to PSL and sent a weak team to South Africa. Your opinions?

No, we are already weak team, we need to win this with our best available group, to gain confidence

Everyone experiments in T20. Only Pakistan send their first choice player instead of sending some youngsters. Md Wasim has selected some this time. Lets see how that goes.

Tbf South Africa already know these IPL players are in their best 11, so it’s not a big deal for them to miss out. I’m sure the boards have an agreement with players to allow them to play IPL, it’s just unfortunate timing of this series. I have not heard any of the South African players say they want to play in IPL and not against Pakistan. South Africa cricket board probably decided to just let them play IPL.

I don't think IPL bound players will even get to play a March against Pakistan. IPL starts on April 9 but players have to report much earlier and join the team.

Heavily weakened by the IPL:

Rabada, de Kock, Ngidi, Miller and Nortje and du Plpessis.

That SA ODI team is certainly formidable. Will be hard to avoid defeat in those games. We really should be beating the SA C team in the T20Is though, especially as more of our main players will be back in the side.

hmmm Odi is 50/50 but the t20 i can favour us.

Early prediction

Odi series SA win 2-1
t20 series Pak win 3-1

That T20 squad is very weak. Even weaker than the one that toured Pakistan.

Anything less than clean sweep in T20s would be a massive disappointment for Pakistan

Strong ODI squad.. Would like to see how Pakistan play against them...

If they win or come close to it, would be big achievement..

Surprise that Reeza hendricks is not in the ODI lineup.. he needs more games , will fill in some of their experienced players gap

You cannot fight the IPL and you would be unwise to try. Pakistan have barely had cricket return to their backyard and embarassed themselves hugely with the PSL. I think it's best we stop picking fights for a bit.

New Proteas limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma wants the team to play an aggressive brand of cricket that can be executed under different conditions and on any occasion.

The 30-year-old Langa-born Bavuma will lead South Africa for the first time in the limited-overs series against Pakistan that starts in Centurion on Friday following his appointment as white ball captain early this month.

“I think if you look at South Africa‚ we have always been a more than competitive ODI unit even to a point where the guys have got us to position number one‚” said Bavuma in his maiden captain press conference on Monday.

“So I think for me it is really just to try and find that style of play and create something that makes us accountable to something‚ and most importantly‚ be able to execute that style of play in any conditions or under any occasion.

“I think for me that is where my thinking is.

"I guess mentally as well‚ it is something that we need to improve a lot on in terms of getting stronger.

"But I think it is more to define that style of play and being able to execute it under any conditions.”

Bavuma will oversee the 2021 ICC Twenty20 World Cup in India in October and November‚ and in another Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in 2022‚ including the 50-over World Cup in 2023.

The soft-spoken leader will usher in his leadership tenure when the Proteas take on Misbah ul-Haq’s Pakistan in the first of the three Betway ODIs at SuperSport Park at 10am.

“I think we have the opportunity now building up to the 2023 World Cup to really define our style of play of and how we want to go about our business‚” said Bavuma.

“For me personally I just want to enjoy the journey‚ to enjoy this new chapter in my new book. I look forward to creating and adding value within the team.”

The Proteas will play three ODIs that will be followed by four T20 matches‚ and all the games will be played at Centurion and at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

“I think the mood in the camp has been rather optimistic. I guess it is always nice to get new faces‚ guys being rewarded for their performances and talent that they have showed domestically.

“I guess from the senior guys as well it is always nice to have new guys in the team‚ guys that will be pushing you‚ who will kind of ensure that you are showing off your best.”

Bavuma also made mention of their women counterparts‚ the Momentum Proteas‚ who have been blazing a trail in India with historic ODI and T20 series triumphs.

“We have been very much inspired by the efforts of our women over the last while.

“We have our own experiences of playing in India and the results and efforts by the women is something we respect as the men’s team.

“We will definitely be looking to ride that wave and put in wonderful performances for the team [against Pakistan].”

Bowling all-rounder Sisanda Magala’s familiarity with his Proteas teammates has made it easy to make a smooth transition and adjust to the national set-up.

Magala is in line to make his long-awaited debut for the Proteas in the limited-overs series against Pakistan and is a favourite on the domestic scene.

“Knowing all the players has made the transition very easy in terms of team chemistry‚” Magala said as the Proteas continued preparations for the first match at SuperSport Park on Friday.

“I have played with and against these guys a lot‚ and it is really good to have that mutual respect and competition among us.”

During his domestic career‚ Magala has featured in almost 300 first class‚ list-A and Twenty20 matches for Eastern Province‚ Warriors‚ Boland and the Lions, where he has claimed 492 wickets.

Despite his reputation as one of the best death bowlers and devastating end-of-innings power hitters‚ Magala has not played for SA at senior level‚ but he says he is not feeling any pressure.

“I know exactly who I am and where I come from and I know what types of obstacles I have come across and managed to overcome. I know what type of character I am‚ so it is good to get pressure. If you get pressure‚ you have to react by doing well.”

Asked about the preparations for the series‚ Magala said they have been working hard at training under the technical team led by Mark Boucher. “It’s been hard with lots of running‚ skills work and in a competitive environment. It has been a good few days of training and I am enjoying it.

“Like I said earlier‚ I am just taking it one day at a time and I am really happy that I am back with the national team. I am happy to be in the running for selection but there are a couple of obstacles that I have to overcome.

“All in all‚ I am excited and I can’t wait for the challenges that are going to be thrown at us by Pakistan.”

Markram: Fresh start for Proteas ODI team
Aiden MarkramMarkram: Fresh start for Proteas ODI team
Published on March 31, 2021
Proteas batsman Aiden Markram says the ODI team are looking to start with a clean slate in their buildup to the 2023 World Cup in India.

The South Africans will face off against Pakistan on Friday in only their third ODI series since the 2019 World Cup in England.

Given the lack of games due to Covid-19 disruptions to scheduled tours, Markram believes the upcoming three encounters with Pakistan will mark a new beginning for the ODI team.

‘There are still a couple of years until 2023, but it is a great time to start fresh as an ODI team. It’s been a while since the ODI team last played, from a Proteas perspective. Certainly a new chance to start fresh,’ Markram said at a media conference on Wednesday.

The right-hander enjoyed a brilliant season in the longer format, where he starred with the bat for the Titans and Proteas.

This is, however, the first time since the Proteas’ final match of that 2019 World Cup that Markram is in line to play an ODI.

The 26-year-old is also excited about the influence that newly appointed limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma has had on the camp so far.

‘Under Temba’s guidance we have been brilliant so far this week. It is encouraging the brand of cricket he would like the Proteas to play. It is exciting that we have got a couple of years to build on something and hopefully when 2023 comes, the team knows exactly what each person’s role is under the brand of cricket everyone wants.’

Friday’s clash with Pakistan will get under way at 10am at SuperSport Park before the Pink Day ODI takes place at the Wanderers on Sunday.
