South Africa captain Faf du Plessis concerned about players’ IPL workload ahead of 2019 World Cup

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has displayed some worry ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 as the cash-rich T20 tournament is set to take place just before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Faf, while displaying his concern, has said that he doesn’t want his players to be injured before the World Cup and they would be thinking about managing workloads of the South African players as the World Cup comes closer. The IPL is scheduled to start at the end of March and is expected to get wrapped up during the middle of May, whereas South Africa play their World Cup opener on May 30 against hosts England.

Faf, while speaking about the upcoming IPL 2019, said that the last thing South Africa could afford is to have one of their bowlers get injured before the tournament. Faf further mentions Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn and said that they will be looking to manage the workloads of the players.

“The obvious one for me is the IPL,” du Plessis said, adding “the IPL is just before the World Cup, and the last thing you want is one of your bowlers getting injured just before the tournament. That’s a concern for us, seeing how we can play that scenario out best.”

“With Dale [Steyn], or KG [Rabada] or any other bowlers, in terms of workload, the World Cup is still quite a while away. Probably you’ll see that closer to the World Cup we’ll think about stuff like managing workloads,” the South African skipper added.

Recently, Rabada admitted that he has “been feeling a bit tired in the past three months,” a statement which has concerned the South African team management a bit. Rabada, who plays for newly named Delhi Capitals in the IPL, is a crucial part of the Delhi franchise’s bowling attack and they would want to squeeze the best out of South Africa’s ace paceman.

Players like Du Plessis, Imran Tahir, Lungi Ngidi, Chris Morris and the young quick seamer Anrich Nortje to name a few have been picked up by different franchises to play in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

Strange. Any player who wants to skip the IPL can do so. Who is putting a gun on to their head and demanding them to play?

And if it still remains an issue, the ICC can just ask the BCCI to shift it after the World Cup.

If he is so concerned than they shouldn't play IPL and take proper rest before the world cup. Its just the matter of priorities.

Hoping that most elite players across countries skip this IPL. Need them for the world cup.

That's exactly my point. Those that want to skip the IPL this year can do so willingly at any moment.

True. These statements doesn't make any sense.

He is talking about it from a captain's point of view.

Yes a player has the option to opt out, however no player wants to leave a million dollars on the table, so they will play the IPL.

He is just saying as a captain, this is a concern as they may get injured during the IPL right before the all important world cup.

Exactly. Lol.

His concern is valid.

It’s 50 - 50 for players . Would be a great practice for them before the World Cup plus would give them confidence to perform under pressure. Great players cherish such occasions.

If someone waves 10-15 crore rupees infront of you for 8 weeks of cricket, I would love to see how many players skip. Most posters here takes the moral ground but ignores the financial aspect of it completely.

No solution for this.

It is what it is.

I agree no solution.

I mean boards could ban their players from playing IPL, but that would cause greater harm than good as elite players who can earn millions in the IPL will retire from international cricket earlier in their careers. Or they may pull a Windies players move and just not care about their national team.

Maybe a possible solution is to compensate players for portion of what they would have earned in the IPL, but that is a slippery slope as well.

The schedule is too strenuous to have IPL and then world cup right after.

Too many matches, even if there are no serious injuries, you can still pick up little niggles here and there which would then effect the world cup performances.

If anyone is to be blamed, it's the GREED of the players. They have the option beforehand, either skip the IPL and prepare for the World Cup, or play the IPL and take the risk of injuries and burn out.

The BCCI has not put a gun to their head to say yes.

If the IPL organizers had any sense, they should postpone the IPLafter the world cup

Tough ask, these guys take Kolpak deals and shed the South African flag altogether. Worse than West Indians in this regard.

Does an additional 10 crores matter when I've spent the last 5 years earning that amount, in addition to the stuff one earns in international cricket and advertisements?

Besides, 20 years from now you would be remembered for doing well and possibly winning a World Cup, and not a cute 31 (17) for the Bombay Bollywoods.

I will still chose the greatest glory in the sport.

Fair concern and even Kohli has the same concern esp. wrt Bumrah as he's requested MI to not play him in all matches. I am sure ECB would also be figuring out some solution as england players, though for some reasons are much fitter than others, are in huge demand in IPL. IPL franchises should show some concern about the game, for a change, and agree to either shorten the tournament or play it in 2 phases - before and after the world cup.

Common sense needs to prevail here from the BCCI. Shift the tournament after the WC and if that can't be achieved they need to shorten it to 4 weeks.

SA should not have their top bowlers play in this years IPL then and compensate them accordingly if they're worried about the bowling workload just before the big tourney.

That's exactly my point. Those that want to skip the IPL this year can do so willingly at any moment.

Yeah as if the franchises will select them or pay them good money again if they do that

Why would the IPL move. They are a for profit private league. They don't have to accommodate anyone. Their own bottom line should and will be their primary concern. Anything else is secondary.

Also, what about the IPL fans? Would they want to watch IPL during their summer time off or nothing at all? Not to mention TV deals and other sponsorship arrangements. There are a whole lot of things in play.

The amount $$$ involved is greater than the WC. It may just be easier to move the WC.

Those who are concerned about IPL workload should get themselves excused/ removed from IPL.

Yeah as if the franchises will select them or pay them good money again if they do that

They will have to pay them good money as the players in question will be well rested to perform well in the World Cup for the respective teams.

If the franchises still don't pay them well or bid for them altogether, it's their loss. The IPL needs the players, not the other way around.

I'm a fan of the IPL but only a plastic cricket fan would prefer the IPL over an ICC event. As for "anything else is secondary" nonsense lets ask the players if they would prefer to win the WC or IPL? You ought to know it is the latter that would be the secondary priority.

Your IPL cheerleading is hilarious and idiotic. I don't blame Bhaag Viru Bhaag for his anti_IPL stance if he has to come across this kind of off-putting drivel.

Too much is made of it. Its T20 cricket first of all. Just 4 overs of medium pace bowling and off cutters mostly.

Hows it any different from teams playing international ODIs, T20is before the world cup?

The personal attack was not necessary at all. You could have made your point without it.

My primary point was that the IPL does not have to accommodate anyone. I still maintain that the IPL will not move from the current slot in the calendar ever. Unless it suits the IPL. Not for any other reason.

By the way I did not claim or mention that people would prefer IPL over the WC.

It wasn't personal at all, its very clear to see I'm criticising your post because you were speaking from the perspective of an IPL franchise owner with little or no regard for the World Cup - the most prestigious prize in 50 over cricket that comes only once every 4 years. From an Indian perspective a disastrous WC is something Indian cricket can ill afford, however a disastrous IPL (for one season) is harmless.

I always struggle to understand why IPL fans start bringing in dollar/money talk wrt tv rights, sponsorship etc etc, unless they have any commercial gains to make through IPL. If munbai indians or Punjab franchises make money through IPL, then how exactly does it help the fans. Not that Mukesh ambani or Burman is sharing their wealth with you, so whether or not they make money, shouldn't be even a point of dicusssion.

You are taking from your perspective and it's not same for everyone. For me Test cricket is pinnacle and India winning a series in Australia is preceded a 50 over competition. It may not be the same for someone else and I am OK with that.
Coming to people who want to move IPL to later date to accommodate players for WC is ludicrous. IPL is for profit and lot of corporations have invested heavily in that venture and their loyalty should be to their stockholders.
IF the countries don't want their players to burn out they need to withhold their NOC's and not let them participate in this tournament. Simple as that.

These guys play IPL 5/6 years so they are earning plenty of money and let's not even talk about the other T20 leagues avaliable throughout the year.

If they are concerned about tiredness they should skip the IPL. What would be better though is if the IPL in WC year's is changed to later in the year.

Nothing wrong with looking at both sides (cricket fans & IPL/team owners perspective).

Again, I did not mention anything about WC being less than IPL. The WC is the ultimate ODI tournament. No question about it. But the IPL/owners do not have to and will not accommodate WC. The WC should and can be a success on its own without the IPL doing it any favors.

Spot on.

If countries don't want their players to burn out or injured just revoke their NOC. Rather than telling people who have invested millions of $$$$ and are expecting returns on it, to change their ways.

If you want your players to be fresh for WC, then don't let them play IPL. But don't tell IPL to move their schedule. It is not only unfair but also laughable.

The players should be the judge on what is plenty of money. To each their own.

The IPL is private, for profit league. The ICC or anyone else cannot and do not have a say in when/how/where it is conducted.

Exactly. When I was criticising KL Rahul for his poor performances and wanted him dropped from the team. Napa was responding with how KL Rahul is making millions and is laughing his way to his bank account. :inti

How funny? Let me know how you feel about it when your boss tell you he is not going to pay for a money because you have made a lot of money rest of year. The players have a skill and their skill is marketable so they are getting compensated. You also have to understand a cricketer's top earning years are not that many and it's a steep fall so they have to make their money when they are still marketable. This is not like a Doctor or a Lawyer where if you are good your income will keep going up. Sportsmen's income will climb up and fall pretty quick.

You have to be kidding. All spectator sports are make-believe. Just like an Indian fan gets satisfaction from India winning, a Mumbai IPL fan gets satisfaction from Mumbai winning.

It is true that "Not that Mukesh ambani or Burman is sharing their wealth with you", but for that matter neither does BCCI.

You have an unhealthy obsession with Rahul, one that exceeds even that of a saas.

Without international cricket how would they have been selected for the IPL?

Simple solution to that is don't select KL Rahul in the team. Looks like he is not cut out for T20 and Test. It's his loss, but there are people like Kohli who are doing fairly well in both let them reap rewards for their talent. Pujara is on the other end of the spectrum.

Without international cricket how would they have been selected for the IPL?

Well if you want to go that route, without Ranji, Sheffield Shield or county Cricket there is no International cricket. And all these guys abandoned their county and state cricket team when they get a chance to play for the National team.

Lol domestic cricket is there to produce cricketers for international cricket. Poor example.

Well, times are changing now, International cricket is producing players for league cricket. You have to do well in domestic cricket to get into international cricket same as you have to do well in International cricket to get into IPL.

As I said earlier, he is part of the indian cricket team and he is a weak link in the team so he will be criticised. You can call that whatever you want. Once he is kicked out of this team along with his accountant, nobody will talk about him here. :inti

The players getting to decide how much money is enough for them (which was my point) and international cricket are two different things.

The context of this thread or posts on this thread is about moving IPL so players are fresh for WC.

You are delusional if you think that is going to make any difference to him.

But when India wins we enjoy the fact that our team has won, I can't care less whether Virat Kohli or BCCI has become $1 mn richer with that victory. You want to enjoy MI victory, pls do by all means but why do money talk when that money is never reaching you.

You are delusional if you think that is going to make any difference to him.

happydavy this is what I was talking about. According to Mr Napa getting dropped from the team won't affect KL Rahul. If that's the case I hope never returns to this team again.

Money speaks bruv....all these how people would remember in 20 years time goes under the bus infront of money. The most important thing in life is money (atleast for a banker like me) and emotions/rest comes later.

What about the IPL teams themselves? When one is paying huge sums, the players should be 200% committed to it. Yet, it obviously not the case with many players. Is the contract not bound of anything? How do they adjust the players salary? Suppose a player decides to miss the crucial final phrase of IPL season, he should be deducted a larger percentage from his fees.

To put into another context, there is Football world cup, and plenty clubs teams play 2-3 weeks before the tournament. You don't see footballers complaining that they want to skip the club matches for the World Cup. And if footballers with more intense fitness requirements can manage, these cricketers should be fine with 2 weeks break.

Take footballers as example, these players play for the clubs over nations. So individual careers matter, it's a job after all.

LOL people taking moral high ground with millions of $$$ involved. I am assuming most folks here are middle class from Ind/Pak which means that Sam Curran will earn more money in just 8 weeks than I'll earn for the next 30 years. So yeah, empty words and virtue signalling is good for social media not real life.

India won the 2011 WC and I spent that entire night roaming the streets doing "India...India". However I don't remember MSD giving me any money to do that. What a crappy logic. If your team wins you win is the basic concept of watching sports. And I haven't watched IPL in 6 years.

Yes WC is THE SH*T but not for the people who spent crores for a business opportunity. They didn't do it for the country and neither did you.

“Every team will make money this year. I’m hoping to fix my accounts and plug my losses with this money. In sports, even globally, returns don’t come easy. But I’m happy now because of what has happened with the media rights for IPL,” said Mohit Burman, promoter of KingsXI Punjab and director at Dabur India Ltd. His team lost money for the first seven years to the tune of Rs 70 crore.

What if Kohli gets injured? That will be a comedy. I don't think there's a proper solution for this.

So how are you going to prevent him from getting injured? What if he gets injured in the very first game of the WC? People got to live their lives. How ever you may look at it, playing cricket for these guys is their job. They have to do their job to get paid.

Just postpone World cup by 15 days. That simple

Too late for that. Tickets, broadcasting rights and everything have been sorted out and postponing it for 15 days will screw everything up

International games are scheduled better with proper rest days between games. In IPL, there's a lot of traveling involved and the whole tournament is clubbed with in a 2 months time. Not to mention it is played during peak summer time in India.

You need to improve your comprehension. I bolded the part of your post "Once he is kicked out of this team along with his accountant, nobody will talk about him here." Note the use of the word <b>"here"</b>. I repeat, if posters on PP don't talk about Rahul, it won't make any difference to him.

I said it in past as well, it is not appropriate for both Indian players as well as players for other countries to schedule IPL just before the World Cup. IPL is a long fixture as well and you don't want to get injured before the WC.

I personally believe for the sake of interest of players and taking into consideration their fitness and workload, BCCI should shift the IPL and make it happen after the world cup.

Every player would want to give his 100% in World Cup and that's what Faf also feels. So, I second him on it.

Money talks and that is what IPL is all about. By declining to play this year, players are potentially giving up the opportunity on being picked up in subsequent IPL's.With millions riding, country over IPL is not necessarily a priority, particularly for players fron non-SENA countries.

T20 slam-bang cricket exacts a much higher toll on the body but I bet, with their pockets full, no one would be complaining, even if they miss playing for their country.

I don't blame the players. They have a very short window of opportunity to make the most $$ from IPL. There is a large enough pool of younger/fitter worldwide cricketer's who would give an arm or a leg to play in the IPL league. Its all about money
