BCCI announces venues for home series against South Africa

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced the venues for the upcoming Paytm South Africa tour of India comprising 5 T20 Internationals in the month of June, 2022.

The itinerary for the five-match T20I home series is as under:-

Cricket in June in India??? This is madness!!

How many matches are going to be rained off. And not to mention the heat.

These two teams just played each other...

This is how messed up the cricket schedule is, teams should only play each other every two years, but ICC is clueless.

These two teams just played each other...

This is how messed up the cricket schedule is, teams should only play each other every two years, but ICC is clueless.

What? SA tour to India was divided into two parts because the ODI series in 2020 was cancelled due to covid.

ICC cannot force boards to play or not play bilateral series, its not in their hands.

Can already see atleast 2 of the 3 games in Vizag/Cuttack/B'lore getting washed out.

The BCCI in all likelihood will do away with bio-bubbles from the upcoming five-match T20 series against South Africa, keeping in mind the mental well-being of cricketers. Bio-bubbles became a part of the lives of cricketers with almost all the series (home and away) played in strict bio-secure environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The T20 series will be played across five venues -- Delhi, Cuttack, Vizag, Rajkot, Bengaluru -- between June 9 and 19.

The IPL, which is also being played in a bio-bubble for the safety of the players and the officials, will end on May 29 and the BCCI does not want its players to move to another confined stay just after the conclusion of the league.

"If all goes well and things remain in control like it is right now, there will be no bio-bubbles and hard quarantine during the home series against South Africa," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"Then we are going to Ireland and England and there won't be any bio-bubble in those countries too." The board is aware that bubble life is not sustainable for long period as staying confined to restricted areas can severely affect the players' mental health.

"Some players have got periodic breaks but if you look at the bigger picture, living in bio-bubble one series after another and now two months of IPL is simply exhausting for the players," he said.

In UK, there are no bio-bubbles as of now for any sporting activity and hence the Indian team is expected to have a free environment in the country where they would play one Test and six white-ball games in a space of three weeks.

However it is understood that the players will be tested at regular intervals to ensure there are no positive cases within the group.

Workload management post IPL

An effective workload management program is being prepared so that all the stars including skipper Rohit Sharma, senior batters Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, keeper Rishabh Pant, pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami , spinner Ravindra Jadeja get adequate rest before jetting off to UK.

"There are five T20 Internationals between June 9 to 19 in five cities. Obviously, all the players won't be playing all the games. Some might be given total rest and some might play a few games.

"If these guys aren't given systemic breaks, it will only harm them. But obviously, the duration of break will be decided by selectors after talking to head coach (Rahul Dravid)," the source added.

It will be interesting to see if Hardik Pandya -- whose comeback is just a matter of time -- will picked for the Proteas series at home just after a gruelling IPL season or directly fielded in the T20I series in Ireland.

NDTV

Enduring a lean patch, a jaded Virat Kohli, in all likelihood, will be rested for the upcoming five-match Twenty20 series against South Africa. The break is expected to help Kohli recharge his batteries before the high-profile England tour. It has been learnt that the national selection committee, headed by Chetan Sharma, would allow India's No.1 batter to take some time off from the game after spending considerable time in bio-bubble in the last two months.

Kohli has been enduring the worst phase of his career as he has not scored a century in almost three years.

"Virat Kohli in all probability will be rested for the South Africa series. He has been playing a lot of cricket and has been in the bubble for a long time," a senior BCCI official privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"It has been a policy decision regarding Kohli and other senior players that they will be given periodic breaks from time to time." South Africa are scheduled to play a five-match Twenty20 series in India from June 9 to 19. Delhi, Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Bengaluru will host the matches.

India will travel to the UK in June-July. They will first play a T20 series against Ireland and then compete against England in one Test (5th Test of 2021 series) and six white-ball games.

Kohli is enduring one of his worst IPL seasons for RCB. He has as many as three golden ducks (first ball dismissals) to his name with just one 50-plus score to show in a below-par contribution of 216 runs.

In 12 games he is averaging 19.63 and at a dismal strike-rate of 111.34.

There are times when a break away from the bump and grind and consistent scrutiny helps a player to get back his rhythm and Kohli might just need one for himself.

Former head coach Ravi Shastri has already spelt it loud and clear that Kohli needs an extended break from the game.

"Whether it's two months or a month-and-a-half, whether it's after England or before England. He needs a break because he has got 6-7 years of cricket left in him and you don't want to lose that with a fried brain," Shastri had recently said.

Ian Bishop had recently pointed out Kohli has been getting dismissed in varied ways by different types of bowlers and it was worrisome.

The selection committee will meet towards the end of the IPL and the series against the Proteas will set in motion the Indian team's preparations for the T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia in October-November.

"Even skipper Rohit Sharma would require adequate rest with so much of cricket being played. Some of the others include KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, who all from time to time will need rest," the official said.

It remains a possibility that some of the players are rested after the first two or three games in the SA series.

While most of the core team players will be available, rookies such as Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh, who have been impressive in IPL, will also be in contention for national selection.

Enduring a lean patch, a jaded Virat Kohli, in all likelihood, will be rested for the upcoming five-match Twenty20 series against South Africa. The break is expected to help Kohli recharge his batteries before the high-profile England tour.

So this will recharge his batteries but skipping a long IPL wouldn't. :inti

So playing each and every IPL game is important but when it comes to international cricket which made Kohli worth this much in IPL, he needs rest!

He surely has his priorities sorted. Same for prima donnas like Bumrah and Pant who won't rest even for a single IPL game. However come international cricket and their jaded bodies start demanding rest.

And why should Kohli be an automatic selection for England tour? He is pathetic for years now. If PuRane could be dropped for the same reason why can't he?

Good that Kohli is skipping the T20 series. Will be better to see some youngster in that position. My T20 XI for this series will be :-

Shaw
Rahul (c)
Shreyas
Pant(wkt)
Pandya
DK
Shardul/D Chahar
Kuldeep
Umran
Siraj/Prasidh
Yuzi

Players rested - Bumrah, Shami, Kohli, Rohit
Players dropped - Bhuvi, Jadeja

You want to try out youngsters in these series and then bring back these entitled prima donnas in WT20, only to miserably lose yet another world tournament?

You want to try out youngsters in these series and then bring back these entitled prima donnas in WT20, only to miserably lose yet another world tournament?

So, you want these seniors to keep stat padding in meaningless bilaterals and then stick with these prime Donnas in WT20 to lose another World tournament.

I would rather give a youngster chance and try force a change in these tournaments if they perform to the expectations.

Its for financial reason. Kohli generates 50% revenue for RCB from his brand value. People pay to watch Kohli bat for RCB, advertisers pump in money bcoz more people watch and everyone makes profit. So even if he wants, its tough for him to skip IPL. Infact its virtually impossible. Remember how broadcasters were unhappy when Kohli pulled out of Asia Cup 2018? Though he dont have the same clout anymore but he still is a money maker for broadcasters. Same goes for MS Dhoni. I mean why would a 40 year old MSD still want to play cricket? He is simply doing it bcoz he brings moolah for CSK.

South Africa tour is not that important. BCCI will mostly look at these games as practice and get playing XI sorted for upcoming T20 World cup even if they make little bit of loss. So they can afford to drop/rest Kohli and try younger players. But in IPL they cant as the tournament need star powers.

Force changes? You know its not going to happen. These prima donnas will play and lose in WT20.

If they can't even perform in IPL, what hope do they have in WT20?

Lol, as if its a given!

Yes because

1. Stats padding is an easy job for a top order batsman.
2. T20 internationals are lower standard than IPL as half of the players are often rested and generally when these T20s come up with ODIs and tests, they become least relevant of the three formats.

Absolutely spot on. Good to see others have also started to see this. You forgot to add Pandya's name. :inti

I know IT20s are less relevant than the other 2 formats. However, IPL isn't of greater standard just because international stars play it.

I don't begrudge players earning money through via IPL as they've short shelf lives so they need to maximize their earning opportunities (except for established stars like Kohli, Rohit etc who've already earned so much) but IPL is still franchisee cricket which is of lower value than international cricket.

Would've been nice for them to prefer international cricket over IPL for once in their careers but I think that's asking for too much!

I get all of that that money trumps everything. Everyone needs it and its never enough!

May be I belong to old times when international cricket was everything to cricketers!

Damn you Misbah!

Well, I've been saying this ever since this trend was started by likes of Kohli, Rahul, Pant and Bumrah of missing international cricket for IPL. Did Tendulkar or cricketers of his times exhibit this tendency? After all, Tendulkar too played 6-7 seasons of IPL.

As for Pandya, he is a nothing cricketer in my eyes who adds nothing to Indian team so didn't mention his name.

Rohit, Kohli, Pant, Bumrah to be Rested For South Africa T20 Series; Dhawan And Pandya in Line For Captaincy

Many seniors including captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are all set to be rested for the upcoming five-match T20 series against South Africa, with an eye on the marquee tour of England in July. Besides, the national selection committee is also set to excuse Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant from the engagements against the Proteas.

It is understood that veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has impressed one and all with his captaincy for Gujarat Titans in IPL-15, are in reckoning for the leadership role for both South Africa and the short two-match T20I series against Ireland.

The T20 rubber against the Proteas will start in the national capital on June 9 with the remaining matches being held at Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Bengaluru respectively.

The squad for the SA series is likely to be selected on May 22 — the last day of the league phase of this edition of IPL — in Mumbai.

The PTI has already reported that an out-of-form Virat Kohli will also be given a much-needed break but it is understood that for the selectors as well as the BCCI, the tour of England starting early July is paramount.

“All the senior India players will get at least three and half weeks of complete rest. Rohit, Virat, KL, Rishabh and Jasprit will all directly go to England for the ‘fifth Test’ following the white-ball series. We need all our key players to remain fresh for the England series," a senior BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

As a part of workload management, all the senior all-format players will not be part of the next seven T20 Internationals.

Asked about captaincy, the source said: “The selectors have a couple of choices. Shikhar Dhawan, as he has already captained India in absence of Virat, Rohit and Rahul during last year’s Sri Lanka series. But Hardik Pandya’s impressive captaincy for Gujarat Titans hasn’t gone unnoticed. So it will be a close call," he added.

Mohsin Khan could pip Umran Malik in SA squad

While Umran Malik has generated considerable excitement with his 150 kmph plus pace, there is a feeling that he is too raw and time with the India A team could help him develop better.

While he remains in the mix with death overs specialist Arshdeep Singh, the man who is emerging as a ‘Dark Horse’ is Lucknow Super Giants’ left-armer Mohsin Khan.

“Our pace bowling department is set and selectors might not experiment too much," he said.

“But yes, Mohsin has impressed almost everyone with his pace, bounce and swing in this edition. He does have a chance. Having said that, not ruling out Umran or Arshdeep either, but Mohsin might just be slightly ahead," he added.

It is understood that most of the players who recently played in the T20 series against Sri Lanka and the West Indies are set to be retained irrespective of their current IPL form.

Obviously Suryakumar Yadav or Ravindra Jadeja’s injury needs to be factored in and Deepak Chahar will also not be available.

The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda along with Dhawan and Hardik are set to form the core of the batting unit. Sanju Samson could also be retained and there could be at the max one left field selection in the squad.

In the pace bowling unit, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan are all certainties, along with the IPL’s stellar spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. Kuldeep Yadav is also expected to make the cut.

Kohli has never taken a long break from cricket unlike some other superstars, he definitely needs one.

Same goes for Pant, Rahul they should take some time off so that our youngsters can get some chances.

Dhawan, lmao! The guy was dropped from T20s 1.5 years ago and he is not even a good captain to start with.

I would give captaincy to Hardik or Shreyas.

Temba Bavuma’s Proteas T20 squad will make a return to international cricket for the first time since the ICC T20 World Cup in late 2021, when they take on India in a five-match series across five venues in India from 09 to 19 June. Tristan Stubbs has received his maiden Proteas call-up ahead of the highly anticipated contest.

The 21-year-old, right-hand, middle order batter, who impressed this past season while playing for the Gbets Warriors in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) T20 Challenge, scored 293 runs in seven innings, at an average of 48.83 and a strike rate of 183.12, including 23 sixes. He was also part of the South Africa ‘A’ team to Zimbabwe before he was called up to the Mumbai Indians camp for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Other notable selections include the exciting return of fast bowler, Anrich Nortje who has been recovering from injury since December 2021 and batters, Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen. Nortje has been medically cleared for action and is currently working through his return to play programme while playing for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
Wayne Parnell also makes a welcome return to the T20 set up for the first time since the team’s tour to England in 2017.

Besides the aforementioned, Keshav Maharaj and number one MRF Tyres Men’s T20I Bowler, Tabraiz Shamsi, the rest of the team will be made up of the IPL contingent, namely, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen and Marco Jansen, making this one of the most exciting Proteas T20 teams in recent times.

“This is the Proteas like we have not seen them in a long time,” commented CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang. “The injection of the IPL players means that we will have a team that’s ready to fire on all cylinders immediately and has vast experience of the conditions that we will be playing in.

“Tristan Stubbs is an exciting prospect and we’re keen to see what he’s made of and we are looking forward to the return of the experience of Reeza (Hendricks), Klaasie (Heinrich Klaasen) and Wayne Parnell to join the likes of Temba (Bavuma), Tabraiz (Shamsi) and Keshav (Maharaj).

“The country can also join us in a collective sigh of relief at the return of Anrich Nortje, who has been working hard to recover from a frustrating injury. The National Selection Panel and I are really excited to watch our full strength Proteas take on the world’s number one T20 team.

“We wish Temba Bavuma and Mark Boucher all the best ahead of what we know will be sportainment at its best,” Mpitsang concluded.

South Africa is currently fourth in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, behind Pakistan (3), England (2) and India (1). More information on the rankings can be located here.

India vs SA T20 series: All-format players likely to be rested
The national selection committee, headed by Chetan Sharma, will also name the squad to play in the postponed, final Test in England in July.

Many performers in IPL are set to be rewarded in the five-match home T20I series against South Africa starting on June 9. The national selectors meet on Sunday to pick India’s squad.

Leading all-format players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami are likely to be rested to help them prepare for the postponed final Test against England at Edgbaston from July 1, to decide the series that India lead 2-1. The Rohit-Sharma led Test team will also be chosen. They will be leave for England mid-June with a 4-day tour match scheduled against Leicestershire from June 24.

Shikhar Dhawan is set to be named skipper for the T2OI series, which could see many new faces like Mumbai Indians’ batting find Tilak Varma, pace sensation Umran Malik and pacer Prasidh Krishna. Left-arm pacers Mohsin Khan and Arshdeep Singh will also be in contention. The series will offer comeback opportunities to Hardik Pandya--he has led IPL newcomers Gujarat Titans into playoffs--and Dinesh Karthik, who has excelled as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav could bowl in tandem against the Temba Bavuma-led team.

After the series, the same squad will leave for Ireland to play two T20Is on June 26 and 28.

India’s tour of England will end with 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs starting on July 7, the squad for which is likely to be finalised later.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee on Sunday named the squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, beginning June 9 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The senior pros -- Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah have all been rested while youngsters, who have impressed in the ongoing IPL 2022, have been given an opportunity. KL Rahul will be leading the side while pace sensation Umran Malik has earned a maiden call-up.

Veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has also made his way back into the squad on the back of some strong performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore this season. Hardik Pandya, who is leading Gujarat Titans in the ongoing IPL season, has also returned to the squad. Hardik had last played for India in the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are among the leading wicket-takers in the ongoing IPL season and hence the duo have been named in the squad as well. Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are also in the squad. Punjab Kings seamer Arshdeep Singh who has given strong performances has also earned a call-up to the national side.

Back to the T20I squad for the series against South Africa, Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan had an underwhelming IPL, but he has retained his spot, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is there in the team as well. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi are also a part of the T20I squad. From the previous T20I series against West Indies and Sri Lanka, Venkatesh Iyer has retained his place.

Impressive performances in the ongoing edition of the IPL have been richly rewarded as India have named their squad for the upcoming home T20I series against South Africa.

The 18-member squad will be led by KL Rahul, with a host of first-team players being rested in order to prepare for the tour of England. The likes of captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah have all been given a break. The series against South Africa though will provide a massive opportunity for India to test their bench strength and finalize their combination ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Some of the best performers in the ongoing edition of the IPL have got their due as they find their place in the squad. These include the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik.

Experienced internationals Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya are also in the fold, the latter having proved his fitness and having led Gujarat Titans brilliantly to a top of the table finish in the league stage of the IPL.

Karthik has been in blistering form at the back end of the innings for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, having won numerous games for the franchise as a designated finisher.

Umran Malik has turned some heads with his raw pace for the Hyderabad-based franchise, consistently clicking speeds of over 150 kmph. Arshdeep Singh has emerged as a fantastic death overs specialist for Punjab Kings, enjoying one of the better economy rates in the tournament.

Deepak Hooda and Venkatesh Iyer also retain their place in the squad, despite not having a lukewarm tournament. Spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are also included in the squad, on the back of their performances for the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, respectively.

India will begin their five-match T20I series against South Africa on 9 June in Delhi, with the final match being played in Bengaluru on 19 June.

India squad for SA T20Is: KL Rahul (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (vice-captain)(wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik.

So Dinesh Karthik is back in T20 squad. And I thought Pandya will be our next captain? :inti

Pandya has been the best captain of IPL so far and hence his team is sitting on top.

KL Rahul is very uninspiring as skipper and less said about Pant is better.

But I think national selectors are still not very sold on Pandya's fitness...so didnt want to make him the captain.

Such a sad t20 team Bhuvi never leaves, stuck wirh Ishan Kishan grrr and Dinesh now

Fed up with seeing Dinesh karthik selection. This guy perform in IPL and get selected in national team ,again fail to deliver in crucial matches, again get dropped, again he performs in next ipl .This cycle continues

Which crucial T20i matches has he failed in?

Don't know why Rahul and Pant are selected. They're the ones (along with Bumrah) who've been playing continuous cricket for the last 5-6 months and in desperate need of a break.

Should have been Tripathi and Samson in their places with Iyer Or pandya captaining.

Biggest travesty is Pujara forcing his way back into test team after bashing hapless trundlers.

2019 wc semifinal vs newzealand. I know it's one day match.

He is good in the finisher role. That game they experimented by sending him in the first 10 overs and it backfired miserably.

DK is good for final 20-25 ball cameo. That's it. 25 ball 45 has utility in T20s, may not be in ODIs.

But people did hyped him as next Tendulkar-Lara combined, what happened now? Where is he? :inti

Next Tendulkar-Lara doesn't have a test century overseas. :inti

You are the only one talking about Prithvi Shaw here. It seems you came up with a random name to hide your pain which you got after BCCI didn't name Pandya as Team India's captain. :91: :inti

Nice to see KL get the captaincy and Pant the vice captaincy. Big tight slap on their haters face. :inti :sree

You missed my point. What I am trying to tell you is you and your buddies hyped Shaw as next Tendulkar-Lara combined but what has happened with him now? He seems to be not able to even come close to the fitness standards that Indian TM are setting up, he isn't even getting close to a place in his best suited format- T20s. This is why I tell you before you tell others not to hype the players untill they produce something special. Shaw is currently a nobody in international cricket. :inti

Poor team selection. Arshdeep doesn't deserve to be in. 10 wickets @ 38 with economy of 7.7. Bowls mid 130s.

Mohsin Khan, 13 wickets in 8 matches @ 13 with economy of 5.9. bowls mid 140s doesn't get a chance.

Tripathi doesn't get a chance.

Axar is selected. Why? No one knows.

India vs South Africa T20I Series: The T20I series between India and South Africa is set to start on 9th June 2022 and the selectors have already picked an 18-member squad with KL Rahul as the captain of the team. The side also includes Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya, both players making a come back into the Indian team with Rishabh Pant named as the vice-captain of the team.

But a BCCI rule puts all these stars currently featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) doubtful for the T20I series against South Africa. Almost all the players selected to play for India in the upcoming series have been playing the IPL for the past two months, some even nursing injuries that the BCCI is well aware of at the moment.

“All players that have been selected for the upcoming series against South Africa will have to join the camp in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Many have minor injuries. So we look at this camp with great importance. For example, Hershal Patel has stitches. It’s important to make sure everyone is OK,” said a BCCI board official, according to a report published on Anandabazar.

All the members of the selected squad have been asked to join the camp on June 5 2022 and everyone has to go through a fitness test. The camp will be led by former India batter and now NCA chief VVS Laxman and physio Nitin Patel, both of whom will oversee all matters related to fitness of the selected players.

After the completion of the two-day camp, players will fly out to New Delhi on June 7 2022 to play the first T20I scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on June 9. The head coach of the team Rahul Dravid is expected to join the team in New Delhi.

Team India is all set to take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series, starting from June 9 in Delhi. The BCCI has announced the India squad and rested some of the key senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami after a hectic season of IPL, and keeping the upcoming England tour in mind.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul has been named the India skipper. The likes of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik have earned their way back into the team, while Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh received their maiden India call ups after an impressive show in the IPL 2022.

Meanwhile, team India is on the cusp of breaking a major milestone ahead of the South Africa T20I series. The team needs one more win to become the team with the most consecutive T20I wins. Team India is currently on par with Afghanistan and Romania with 12 wins to their name and a win against SA in the first T20I will take them to 13 consecutive wins, the most by any team.

India’s last loss in a T20I game came against New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Post the shambolic display against the Kiwis, India went on to beat Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia in the same tournament, even though they couldn’t progress to the next round.

After the T20 World Cup, India hosted New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies in back to back series, demolishing the visitors and comprehensively winning all games. Speaking about the South Africa series, the matches will be played on June 9 (Delhi), June 12 (Cuttack), June 14 (Visakhapatnam), June 17 (Rajkot), and June 19 (Bengaluru).

India’s squad for SA series:

KL Rahul (C), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik.

Quinton de Kock pulled up a chair near the tent as he watched the spin twins Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj hit the "right areas" during South African team's first training session on Friday. The most interesting aspect of the practice session was Shamsi, Maharaj and later Aiden Markram spending quite some time doing "spot bowling".

The trio is likely to play a major role in the five match T20 series against India along with CSK all rounder Dwayne Pretorius, who also had a fair spell at the nets.

Wayne Parnell, who is making a comeback after good five years, was focused during his extended spell while Raasie van der Dussen looked the most impressive under the watchful eyes of head coach Mark Boucher.

Mark Jansen got a fair bit of batting tips from Boucher, who was seen telling him all about holding the shape while going for expansive drives.

While De Kock watched others go through paces, South Africa's IPL star David Miller is currently holidaying in Maldives and will link up with the squad soon.

The Proteas squad members assembled at the Feroz Shah Kotla for their optional practice session after clearing their RT PCR tests ahead of opening T20 International next Thursday.

"All the squad members have tested negative but for the IPL players who were in action till last week, they would be given a few days break ahead of the series as part or workload management," a member of Proteas support staff told PTI on the sidelines of the net session.

SA national team stand for U19 colleague

In a moving gesture, the South African national team players have all contributed for the treatment of former national U19 World Cupper Mondli Khumalo who is battling for his life in a UK hospital after being attacked outside a pub.

The Proteas have contributed through South African Cricketers' Association (SACA).

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma says the upcoming T20 series against India will be an opportunity for him to identify players for specific roles for the World Cup, which will be held in Australia later this year. The South African T20 side last competed in November at the World Cup in Sharjah and with the next World event slated to begin in October, Bavuma is keen to marshal his troops.

“The conditions in India don’t accurately simulate conditions in Australia. In saying that, there’s still a lot of benefit from playing. Any type of competitive cricket will be good for us," Bavuma said during a virtual media interaction.

“We’ll be using these games really to familiarise ourselves again with how we go about playing cricket. Getting that right language that we speak amongst ourselves, really getting guys understanding what their roles are within the team." The visitors will also be fielding a few new faces in a bid to find an able opening partner for Quinton de Kock.

“We’ve got a couple of new faces within the T20 space. Opportunities will be given to those guys to see what role they can play and what value they can add to the team."

The Indian team will be without many senior cricketers but Bavuma expects the rubber to be very competitive. With India’s major stars like skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah rested for the series, the hosts are being led by KL Rahul and will feature some new faces including pacers Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh.

“It’s obviously a new-look Indian side. A lot of guys who have done well in the recent IPL have been given opportunities. From us as a team we wouldn’t be looking at it any differently," Bavuma replied to PTI’s query. “We don’t really see it as taking on a B’ side. We have played against the Indian T20 side. So, going into the game, we’ll still be as motivated as ever. The competitiveness will be there," he added.

The South African white-ball skipper feels the Indian team in recent times has had players who go hard and play aggressive cricket. “The attitude, the mindset of the Indian team, in the last couple of years, has changed. It’s guys who play cricket hard, who play very competitively. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not there but the Indian fighting spirit will still be there.

“We don’t expect them to take it easy on us. We don’t expect it to be easy on us. We still expect it to be tough, and we’ll be approaching it in that manner." Asked about areas they would like to improve Bavuma said. “That’s (batting) a thing we’d like to solidify. More specifically at the top." “If I look at our bowling there is a bit more of solidity and clarity. With these games we’ll be trying to find those combinations, or particularly for who partners up with Quinton upfront."

“One, two or number three position are probably where we’d like to get a lot more clarity. But I think everything else will kind of will continue as is. Our middle order is our middle order, we’ve got a nice set of all rounders is more particularly at the top. “In terms of the series, we are looking to win but also achieve all the other objectives as well." Indian spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav head to the series after a stellar display in the IPL and Bavuma is hopeful the SA experienced batters are able to navigate them.

“It will be a challenge. We’ve played against them a couple of times, and one hopes that we have a better understanding of conditions here in India. The guys are individually speaking about them. They have the individual ways of approaching spin and how they can be successful. “For the younger guys, it’ll be important how the others share that knowledge. “The way that we played slow bowling over the last 18 months or so as a group gives us a lot of confidence and belief that we can dominate spin bowling and different types of bowling." South Africa are set to take on India in five T20Is, starting from June 9 to 19.

India coach Rahul Dravid addressed the press conference on Tuesday, 7 June ahead of the five-match T20I series against South Africa.

After the completion of the IPL, the team is currently camped in Delhi, where they will play the first game of the series before the action heads to Cuttack, Visakapatnam, Rajkot and then Bengaluru.

While there are plenty of new faces in the squad, there are a few familiar old ones returning to the India setup, including Dinesh Karthik.

Karthik, who has played 94 ODIs and 32 T20Is, hasn't played in the shortest format for India since 2019. However, a brilliant IPL, where he scored 330 runs for RCB in 16 matches at a strike rate of 183, made it difficult for the selectors to ignore him.

Speaking on what sort of role Karthik is expected to play, Rahul Dravid said that Karthik will be expected to play the same role that has helped him force his way back into the Indian side.

"With Dinesh, it's pretty obvious," said Dravid. "It's very clear that he has made a comeback based on the skills that he has shown in a particular phase of the game. At that backend, Dinesh has really been able to show great consistency for the last 2 to 3 years. He has been able to make a difference in whichever team he has played.

"I don't see it any different and that's why he has been picked. He has been picked to bat in that kind of position and see whether he can replicate those kind of performances for India."

One other player who is back and firing is Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder has been in and out of the white-ball setup owing to injuries but recently enjoyed a sensational IPL campaign, both as a player and as a captain.

Dravid was excited to have Hardik back into the mix, both as a batter and bowler but hinted at him playing a different role to the one he played with Gujarat where he batted higher at No.4.

"It's really pleasing to have him back," said Dravid. "Hardik at his best is a fantastic cricketer with the bat and ball. We have seen that with India in the past. Obviously, he has been successful in white-ball cricket and has shown really good form in this IPL.

"Without giving too much away about the batting orders before the game starts, sometimes the roles that you play with the franchise match the roles that you play for India but sometimes you have to play different roles for different teams.

"Based on our team combination and the players who are already established in certain positions, that can happen from time to time."

One of the most anticipated additions to the squad was Umran Malik. The tearaway pacer had a breakthrough campaign, where he finished fourth in the list of Purple Cap with 23 wickets.

Dravid was excited to have the youngster in the squad but suggested that patience would be key in his growth as a player.

"Yeah, it is exciting. He certainly bowled quick and with pace", said Dravid. "Another exciting thing for me was watching the IPL from the outside is the number of Indian bowlers bowling really fast. And obviously, being the coach of all three formats of the game, I would love to see that translated into the longer formats of the game. But it is brilliant in terms of watching Umran in the nets, you can see that he has got that pace.

"Obviously, he is learning. He is a young boy and he is getting better, improving all the time. The more he is able to play, the better he is going to get. From our perspective, very happy to have someone like him in the mix.

"We have to see how much playing time we can give him, we also have to be realistic, we have a large squad, and it is not possible to give everyone playing XI time. I think I am certainly someone who likes to have that consistency, give people time and let them settle in their positions. It would be interesting time to see how much playing time we give to Umran, we also have Arshdeep here who is brilliant as well."

India will be without their regular captain Rohit Sharma, in the absence of whom, KL Rahul will lead the side in the five games against South Africa.

On Rohit's absence, Dravid spoke about the importance of managing workload, especially for players playing in all three formats.

"Rohit is our all-format player. It would be unwise to expect everyone to be available every single game, every single time", said Dravid.

"We want to ensure that they are fit for the big tournaments, we need to manage them before that to ensure that they are peaking at the big games. Obviously, with the one-off Test match in the UK, which was a spillover from last year, we need to ensure that we are able to get the best side available for that Test match.

"With the kind of busy schedule that we have, it doesn't bother us. We understand that there are times we will have to rest our big players and we may not be able to field our strongest side all the time but it is also an exciting opportunity for a lot of younger guys, which they probably might not have got. It helps us improve the depth of our squad, so there are some positives as well."

After the series against South Africa, India will travel to the UK where they will play England (one-off Test, three ODIs and three T20Is) and Ireland (two T20Is). The limited-overs legs will be crucial for India heading into the T20 World Cup later this year in Australia.

Coming onto the selection part of Indian XI, I think we should not pick bits and pieces bowling of Axar Patel, Venky Iyer and Deepak Hooda. We should go with five proper bowling option and one genuine all-rounder. We saw in IPL, better bowling attack is always the mantra for success.

My team would be :-

KL(c)
Ishan
Shreyas
Pant(wkt)
Pandya (All-Rounder)
DK
Harshal
Bhuvi
Kuldeep
Umran/Avesh

Wake up, Rahul & Kuldeep are out of this series due to injury.

India captain KL Rahul was on Wednesday ruled out of the five-match T20 International series against South Africa owing to a right groin injury, BCCI said on Wednesday.

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was named as the captain for the five-match T20I series, while Hardik Pandya, who recently led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title, was appointed as the vice-captain.

In another major jolt for the Indians, who have already left out senior players like captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav was ruled out after sustaining an injury while batting in the nets on Tuesday.

I don't know how these prima donnas kept playing each and every IPL game (at least 14 of them) and get injured at first whiff of International cricket.

Rahul especially is such a loser, good for nothing. Saw him dancing at a wedding just 2 days back. Did he get injured while dancing?

Should never be chosen any team at any level, any format.

Rahul is a fraud, always gets injured when big guns rest. Same happened in New Zealand test series too. Anyways I don't mind this because with big guns not playing, he would have done tuk tuk as opener only. So, better he doesn't play.

However, the more important point now is that Pant and Pandya are leaders of this team :inti

Getting hit in the nets is due to IPL?

When did I say it’s due to IPL, I just said IPL shupastars getting injured and conveniently never get injured in IPL while playing in nets… ooomph giving their full effort in nets practice for India I guess.
