I think this is the best possible combination that can be played and the bowlers will have full license to go full throttle at full pace while Abbas and Ashraf can do the holding job.

Shadab and Faheem cannot do worse than Fakhar and Sarfaraz with the bat. Play the best possible team from the squad of 15 to win

They couldn’t do any worse, but the length of the tail worries me.

Even if it’s that team minus Hasan Ali but plus Sarfraz I’d be okay with it.

5 pacers with Shadab as the spinner will give 4 of them to go 100% in all of their spells. Shadab already has 3 50's and Faheem has a 50 already. We need a full throttle pace attack to maximize our chances, our tail is what it is so can't do much about it. Sarfaraz is an utter waste in the team right now

Batting for me is a no brainer, Imam and Fakher out - Azhar opens and Faheem comes in.

The bowling is harder to choose. It's definitely gonna be a fast bowlers wicket and Hasan will be the fresh after missing the second Test. The question is should he be played over Shadab or will Shadab's batting be needed more?

I'm leaning towards Hasan Ali only because I think Sarfraz is a bit harsh on his spinners and uses them too defensively but usually has good sense when rotating his fast bowlers.

I'd have dropped Asad for Faheem but Asad kept his place off his recent performance. I don't think it hurts giving Fakhar a go at 6 since it's last test, he's likely gone next series anyway and I don't think it's right to bring in Rizwan for 1 match with no practice games, and is likely not going to be inducted in next tour as isn't first choice replacement in middle order. Let's experiment and give Fakhar a whole test, i.e. 2 innings at 6 and see if he can thrive as a middle order bat.

Hasan in for Yasir simply as I think we take a risk go all out with a pace attack and hope we can bowl out SA cheaply in the 1st innings and get a big lead ourselves so 2nd innings doesn't come much into play.

Should go with the following

Shan Masood (C)
Ahmad Shahzad
Asad Shafiq
Babar Azam
Fawad Alam
Umar Akmal (WK)
Faheem Ashraf
Shadab Khan
Anwar Ali
Mohammad Amir
Mohammad Asif

40 runs and FaF postponed it to next day when SA could have chased it on day 3 if they wanted to.
FaF has just extended the miseries for one day more when opposition is down.

Don't know why FaF pushed it to 4th day but by postponing this chase to next day, SA might just have won the 3rd test already. Has he done it deliberately ?

In my opinion Shaheen Shah should be rested

4) Asad Shafiq
5) Babar Azam
6) M Rizwan
7) Sarfaraz Ahmed
8) Shadab Khan
9) M Amir
10) Hasan Ali
11) M Abbas

This should be the line up in my opinion as Shadab can't do any worse than Yasir Shah at the moment..

How do you expect the pitch to play & what bowling attack would you like to see from both sides .
Personally i would like 5 bowling options in both 11's .

We need to drop Yasir Shah.Hassan needs to come in.
Faheem would also be good in place of Imam or Fakhar. He cant do worse than them in terms of batting and his bowling would be a plus.
Other than that there are lots of passengars but not much to choose from as the 15 players are so limited in terms of abilities and benefits they may provide. And besides the team management will not make any drastic changes as it is.

Only two changes required. Yasir's replaced by Hasan Ali and Fakhar replaced by Shadab. Shadab will be able to score the runs Fakhar has contributed so far. Fakhar just needs to sort out his technique for long format and then return to Pakistan test team on next tour.

7. QDK
8. KG
9.

Olivier looked tired after those long spells of continuously hitting the deck and Philander rarely looked a threat at his favourite venue. If Olivier is fit and capable of bowling quick, he should play. The other spot can go either to Keshav or Dane Paterson. If Olivier is unfit, both should play. Theunis misses out.

5 pacers overkill. Shadab would be better for variety and is more sensible batsman.

It would be a tossup between Shadab or Faheem but i'd still back Faheem as Johannesbourg is the only ground apart from Sabrina Park in Jamaica in which fast bowlers have a strike rate of below 50 and is in the top 5 grounds since 2002 where fast bowlers have had the lowest average.

If there was any ground which would have offered help to the spinners it would have been newlands and if a specialist spinner couldn't do anything here i doubt Shadab will be able to and that too in Jo'berg which doesn't offer much for spinners. In terms of batting he is better than Faheem but not good enough to be added as a specialist batsmen and so i'd still chose Faheem for he is not far behind with a 50 under his belt in the 3 matches he has played.

Hahahah to these unrealistic scenarios. Sarfraz will play next match.

The way Sarfraz criticised bowlers, Amir looks doubtful and he deserves it. Better for Faheem and Shadab stay away from this loser team. Let the selector nephew and leeches like Shafiq and Azhar stay on. Tour is already over, they can't win this series. A reaction is required by the public against PCB. For that we need a team who could go down under 49 total the last time they toured Jo'burg with Misbah and Younis

This is the line up I would go with

Protect Shaheen for the ODIs. No point in running him into the ground. Sarfraz deserves to be dropped and it isn't good for his mental state to keep getting thrashed . Have to stick with the same batting line up as we have no other options.

For captaincy don't real mind who it is. Shan,Azhar,or Asad. Doesn't make a difference. We than will have months to decide who will be the long term captain in tests.

I would be careful with Shaheen. He is still only 18 and already bowling so many overs.
He has an extra two days off now.

Playing Yasir Shah is now totally discredited, so we know there will be four quicks, and that will give him plenty rest.

FAF is definitely out, Markram is almost certainly out and Amla is doubtful.

Why wouldn’t you pick your most hostile attack, especially on the bounciest wicket in the world?

With Faf & perhaps Markram out , visitors on back of their improved showing with bat have a great chance to grab a win .

I think Umpires didn’t agree. The game was scheduled to finish at 5:30 (or 4:30), with half an hour extension for slow over rate. PAK was all out at 6:04 (5:04), on the possible last over of the day including half an hour extension. 10 minutes for change of innings means SAF could have started their innings 45 minutes after scheduled finish and they would have needed close to an hour to chase this. Light might be an issue, and definitely broadcast schedule.

That extension rule is also for max. 30 minutes and only if chances are high that game will be finished in that time. Once Inzamam didn’t extend the game when 18-19 was required and he with MoYo were in middle (and & 80% chance of thunderstorm next day), because he didn’t know the extension rule. Here don’t think is the case - Umpires knew that SAF would have required to come next morning in any case.

My playing XI will be

Babar
Fakhar

Shadab/Fahim

Before having a look at the J’burg track can’t choose between Shadab or Fahim.

And, I am picking one of them because I belive they’ll bat better than Imam. Had Haris been fit, surely I would have played him and 4 pacers.

The extra half-hour (530-6) for a slow over rate had already been taken, and then they went into the second extra half-hour which applies only if a result is possible.

The tenth wicket pair then scored 24 in 2.4 overs, which made a huge difference.

The wicket fell at 6.04. There had to be a ten minute change of innings and 6.14 pm resumption.

Without those 24 runs, the umpires would have allowed South Africa to chase a target of 17 in 16 minutes, which is 3 overs.

But they weren’t going to score 41 runs in 3 overs, so the premise for the extra half hour didn’t apply, so they called stumps.

Why play Fakhar at The Wanderers? The short ball might literally kill the guy who suffered three head injuries even in the Champions Trophy.

Why not play Faheem instead? He will score more runs and he will reduce the workload of the other quicks.

You don’t need so many bowlers.
First, you add the captain
Then it’s a debate about fahim or hassan.
Shadab abd yasir both should play

2 wrist spinners at the Wanderers. Play 4 quicks man. That place is a nightmare or spinners.

This I agree with. Azhar, Shan, Babar, Shafiq, Rizwan, Skipper, Fahim, Aamir, Abbas, Afridi, Shadab. Of course this is the squad we have otherwise would have preferred Usman Salahuddin instead of Rizwan

It’s The Wanderers.

Spinners are redundant because at altitude the ball bounces over the stumps unless you bowl so full that it can be driven before it spins.

You need at least 4 quicks.

My preference has changed since Sarfraz threw the bowlers under the bus at his press conference. Now it would be:

1. Azhar Ali (honorary captain in his final Test)
2. Shan Masood
3. Asad Shafiq
4. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
5. Babar Azam
6. Shadab Khan (as a batsman)
7. Faheem Ashraf
8. Mohammad Amir
9. Hasan Ali
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Mohammad Abbas

Alternatively, keep Sarfraz as keeper and omit Shadab.

Realistically you won’t lose the captain on this tour.
You don’t need five pacers. It should be
Shan, Azhar, babar, Shafiq, Rizwan, Skipper, Fahim, Shadab, Aamir, Afridi, Abbas.
This is the squad we have but I would have preferred Usman Salahuddin in Rinwans slot and deferred captaincy/wicketkeeping issues to post tour.

Already very weak SA batting will be weaker in the last test. Good chance for Pakistan to win.

Why not play Faheem instead? He will score more runs and he will reduce the workload of the other quicks.

Because the morally corrupt guy hasn’t picked any back up middle order, neither had sent a replacement for Haris, who was confirmed to be injured at least on 1st January (my hunch is 23rd of Dec or earlier) and 3rd Test starts on 11th - there was enough time to fly in Saad or Umar, acclamatize and play in the 3rd Test. I don’t want Imam to play through this systematic corruption, but he’ll play and might score some as well for trolls here to taunt my post later.

Coming to Fahim & Shadab, I don’t think any of them is better bat than FZ, hence one of them has to sit out. At J’burg, genuine finger spinners struggle - this guy Shadab is not even a genuine leggi with poor control, but playing 5 pacers makes it completely one dimensional attack, considering Shan also bowls medium pace - hence I am not sure between Fahim & Shadab. If it’s a typical J’burg flyer, I don’t mind Fahim, but that’s for his bowling - not sure if he’ll score more runs but hope so.

It's Joburg. They'll get hammered seeing they can't even deal with the pace of bounce of Newlands and Centurion.

Would've been a great chance to give Saad, Saud or Usman a go. Can't believe no replacement is being sent out.

@mmhw where is Haris Sohail replacement?? The guy called Pakistan CS is trolling us again.

@mmhw where is Haris Sohail replacement?? The guy called Pakistan CS is trolling us again.

You probably tagged me - CS can't risk to send a replacement now, because I think PAK is certain to play 5123 combination at J'burg; if another middle order plays and scores some runs, 8 months later it'll be difficult for Imam.......

Mohammad Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf need to be given a chance.

If they do play and Pak win because of them - wonder what the reaction will be then?

I checked just now , some weather on day 1 , 2 & 5 . This needs to be monitored .

As per Mickey Arthur, Shadab is fit again to play and could be featuring in the final Test.

I will want to see this team play but I don’t think this will happen:

1) Shan Masood
2) Fakhar Zaman
3) Asad Shafiq
4) Babar Azam
5) Sarfaraz Ahmad
6) Shadab Khan
7) Faheem Ashraf

Mickey hinting Shadab may play.... LOL... Mickey Bro you have seriously lost your.......(you can fill however you like)

So Shadab the spinner will get fifer and score a 100. So called Proper Batsmen can't play and the T20 player will win you test... Mickey Salute to you :salute:salute

Well said... banking hopes on Shadab is like raising the white flag. Heck he barely makes the ODI side on merit.

Well said... banking hopes on Shadab is like raising the white flag. Heck he barely makes the ODI side on merit.

The leading ODI wicket taker for Pakistan in 2018 barely makes the ODI team on merit. Wow!!!

He scored three fifties on the Test tour of Ireland and England where most so called genuine batsmen failed, also Yasir's pathetic bowling overseas is of no value. Shadab would have been a far better choice and actually played a crucial part in Winning against Ireland and England.

We might as Day 1 and Day 2 are expected to receive rain for most part.

YAY! If we can somehow last the remaining 3 days out for a draw, we will only lose 2-0. This will surely be a monumental occasion to only lose 2-0 :)

I personally believe we need to make 4 changes. Drop Fakhar Zaman, he looks like a tail ender in this series and also drop Yasir Shah. Rest Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Afridi, we need to be very serious with rotating our bowlers, especially with the amount of cricket coming up for our team over the next 6 months or so.

I would bring in Mohammad Rizwan for Zaman, Shadab Khan for Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali + Faheem Ashraf for Amir + Shaheen. Open with Masood.

1) Imam-ul-Haq - last chance, needs to do good here or risks being dropped
2) Shan Masood
3) Azhar Ali - not had a good series, hopefully he doesn't get out to Olivier again.
4) Asad Shafiq - not expecting much as he's had his quota of good innings here but can't be dropped.
5) Babar Azam
6) Mohammad Rizwan - Let's see how he does
7) Sarfaraz Ahmed (C) (WK) - potentially his last game as captain, has had 1 good innings this series
8) Shadab Khan
9) Faheem Ashraf
10) Hasan Ali
11) Mohammad Abbas

This team is good as you are boosting the batting a lot. This team is a lot more capable of scoring 300 and still capable of taking 20 wickets. You've got a very long tail, Faheem and Shadab are really good for the balance of the team.

2 all rounders out of 4 bowlers is risky business and I am not sure they can take 20 wickets when you are taking out the 2 best bowlers for Pakistan in this series. One of Amir and Shaheen has to play instead of Faheem at least but preferably in place of a batsman, so we can have a realistic chance.

Hmm, Faheem Ashraf is capable of taking a few wickets, he has got out some good players, he's not just there to tie up an end but yes he's not a specialist bowler. I'd take the risk, we don't have much to lose tbf.

Bhaijan it's about combination. Go and look at shadab last 3 test matches. He scored a 50 in each. I give him as much chance as anybody else of avging 30- 35. And allows us to play 5 bowlers, so faheem can play number 8 and not yasir.

Mohammad Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf need to be given a chance.

Rizwan ? Highly unlikely when there is an ODI squad to be announced.
What they do wrt ODI squad if they play Rizwan here and he end up scoring good runs.

It has gone out of script already because now they can't overlook Shan for ODIs. If Rizwan plays and performs well, that's a headache for selectors wrt ODI squad.

Only way I see Rizwan playing in 3rd Test is if selectors announce ODI squad (Riz not picked) by 10 Jan. If that actually happens, I'm finally done with CS.

Bhaijan it's about combination. Go and look at shadab last 3 test matches. He scored a 50 in each. I give him as much chance as anybody else of avging 30- 35. And allows us to play 5 bowlers, so faheem can play number 8 and not yasir.

Ok lets see what he does, hope he does play 3rd test and will see what he does..

This is SA not UAE or Bangladesh where you play a spinner. You need to have a solid spinner to bank on him sorry but Yasir is only good at home and Shadab is not a big spinner of the ball neither his line is for test matches just because he scored some runs in a couple test matches we can make him a test player... Will see what he does...

Same way we wanted fakhar to be the test player now the people who asked for fakhar are not found anywhere.

This is test cricket bits and pieces player will never win you test series ....forget Outside home you 'll struggle at home with these T20/bits pieces player.

Why can't he be dropped? This is the type of metality that holds us back. The cull should start immediately.

This is Johannesburg. The fastest, bounciest wicket of all.

If Sarfraz has to play - and I think on merit he should be dropped - this would be my team.

1. Azhar Ali - playing his Final Test.
2. Shan Masood
3. Asad Shafiq
4. Babar Azam
5. Mohammad Rizwan
6. Shadab Khan (because there is no other serviceable batsman on a bouncy track)
7. Sarfraz Ahmed
8. Faheem Ashraf
9. Mohammad Amir
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Mohammad Abbas

Please remember, a 2-1 loss is much less humiliating than a 3-0 loss.

And Mohammad Amir has 8 wickets in 3 innings at an average of 22, while Shaheen Shah Afridi has 9 wickets in 3 innings at 27. They should be the first two bowlers on the team-sheet.

You can't drop someone after they score 88. Anyway, there are no other replacements for him in the squad, and he is the third highest run scorer for Pakistan in the series.

1. Azhar Ali
2. Shan Masood
3. Imam-ul-haq / Asad Shafiq
4. Babar Azam
5. Mohammad Rizwan
6. Sarfaraz Ahmed (c) (wk)
7. Shadab Khan
8. Faheem Ashraf
9. Hasan Ali
10. Mohammad Amir
11. Mohammad Abbas

With no batting alternatives for Imam or Asad this is the team I would pick. Not great but I think Azhar has to play as an opener since that's where he seems to preform the best. Shaheen needs his workload managed so he needs to be rested for this game.

What type of logic is that???? I doubt they'll even be thinking about the ODI squad when picking the XI

Because since Misbah and Younis retired........

Azhar Ali, who is about to have his 34th birthday, averages 29.82.
Asad Shafiq, who is 33, averages 37.59.

The problem with Misbah and Younis playing on was that there was no succession planning and they exited together and left a big hole.

One of Azhar and Shafiq has to be excluded a year before the other.

And clearly you drop the 34 year old averaging 29, not the 33 year old averaging 37.

Imam
Shan
Azhar
Asad
Babar
Sarfraz
Shadab
Faheem
Amir
Hasan
Abbas

So we have one more test match. Sarfaraz can be rested, bring in Rizwan.

Bhaijan been don't need shadab to bowl 35 overs an innings.
Just 5-10 in innings one and 25 in last innings pitch dependent. He will bat at 6.
Bulk of bowling will be done by 3 quicks and faheem
Look at this scorecard . Faheem and shadab were critical to this and this should have been the template outside Asia. As we are more reliant on our bowling as a team, we just need more options in the batting to be able to get us to a par score

The other thing about shadab is, he is better at bowling to the tail as well than yasir

Well spotted. The key to our success in England were the 5 bowlers. Still dont have confidence in Shadab at 6. May be we install Rizwan at 6 and Shadab at 7. We will never be a batting team so might as well play enough bowlers.

Not just the bowling , the runs from shadab and faheem were vital too.
Shadab scored a 50 in the next game 2 and a crucial one Vs Ireland as well.
The planning for this tour should have been based on the above. We needed to invest in shadab and faheem. They need to play the last game
