Cape Town - North West University Cricket Club (Pukke) batsman Shane Dadswell struck a record 490 in a massive 2017/18 North West Cricket premier league 50 over game on Saturday.

This saw Pukke win by 387 runs victory over Potch Dorp Cricket Club at the Witrand Oval in Potchefstroom.

Dadswell's quadruple ton spanned a mere 151 deliveries - featuring 27 fours and 57 sixes. He scored 253 runs through the off-side and 237 across the leg-side.

The previous highest score was 486 by Sankruth Sriram of India.

The right-handed opening batsman achieved the record on his 20th birthday - and was well supported by Ruan Haasbroek who scored a complementary 104 not out.

The pair carried Pukke to a hefty final total of 677 for three in 50 overs.

Potchefstroom Dorp bowler Dawid Crowther proved the most expensive with a costly one for 131 in 10 overs.

They responded with 290 for nine with Dadswell, also provided a contribution with the ball, finishing with figures of two for 32 in seven overs.

His economy was 13.1 which is lower than the run rate which was 13.54 so it would be impossible for him to be the most expensive.

Could be byes and stuff. Need to see a scorecard.

Or he could have given the most amount of runs in the bowling department thus being the most expensive.

Like bowler A- 5 overs 70 runs

He bowled 10 overs for 131 runs.

I don't know is it possible to play such an innings... Strike rate over 300 for so long, hitting so many sixes, scoring so many runs.
All this is what looks otherwise a normal cricket match.

Does anyone know if he is any kind of a special talent?

Insane. There was a similar story a few years ago of an English cricketer doing something outrageous like this in a club game. That man was Liam Livingstone who has now played for England. Wonder if this person will get near the South African team in the future.

One has to ask-how short were those boundaries?

Yep, or if the other team was asked to bowl with their wrong hands only, was one club an open age player club and other belonged to only 10 year old aged players etc?

I read somewhere that the boundary was short only on one side and the rest were decent size boundaries. He was clearing them with ease.

Club cricketer Shane Dadswell says he is still coming to terms with the events of the past few days. The previously unknown opening batsman re-wrote the record books when he posted the highest individual score in minor, limited overs cricket.

The Johannesburg-born youngster scored a blistering 490 runs from 151 balls, smashing 57 sixes and 27 fours, playing for NWU Pukke Cricket Club against Potch Dorp 1 Cricket club at the Witrand Oval Cricket field in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

His innings saw him better the previous highest score of 486 runs by Indian teenager S. Sankruth Sriram (JSS International School U16 v Hebron School U16 in 2014/15).

“Honestly it’s not even something you dream about,” Dadswell said. “You dream about a double hundred, so to get 400 odd is a really special moment on a special day. It’s phenomenal, the best day of my life.”

A former King Edward VII School (KES) pupil, the young man also celebrated his 20th birthday on the very same day – 18 November.

The previous weekend Dadswell, who describes himself as ‘a bit of an attacking batsman’ also turned in a remarkable performance, although it went unnoticed.

“It’s been an amazing two weeks because last week I got 126 off 38 balls. So, there’s certainly an attacking nature inside me,” he beamed.

Dadswell is not new to cricket. The second year Business Psychology student played in all the Cricket South Africa (CSA) age-group weeks, including the most famous of them all, the Khaya Majola Week, representing Gauteng.

Whether he plays cricket professionally is yet to be seen, although measures had been in place well before the weekend.

He continued: “It would be amazing to play cricket for a living. I guess the first steps have already been taken because it was in the pipeline for me to start training with the (North West) Dragons from this week.

“So that’s the direction I'm looking in for now. I have been part of a few things with them this season, I’ve played a warm-up game and stuff like that. I don’t really think I would have had an opportunity up until next year, but hopefully this innings will change that.”

Dadswell, whose idol is South African-born Englishman Kevin Pietersen, celebrated with his teammates at the nearby Harry Oppenheimer Field on Sunday.

After all, his NWU Pukke Cricket Club also deserved some credit. Their team total of 677/3 in 50 over minor cricket, surpassed the previous highest total of 629/5 (University of Warwick 2nd XI v Newman College in 2007).

Ruan Haasbroek contributed 104 not out, with Potch Dorp bowler Dawid Crowther the most expensive bowler after returning figures of 1-131 in 10 overs.

Dorp did make a fist of the game by responding with 290 for nine, but they lost by 387 runs.

Dadswell capped a fine all-round contribution with the ball by finishing with 2-32 in seven overs.
