"Spot-fixers after completing their punishment can come back [to national team]" : Inzamam-ul-Haq

LAHORE: Urging equal treatment under prescribed laws for all spot-fixers who serve their punishment, chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq has signalled Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif — like Mohammad Amir — can return to national duty.

Speaking as a guest of the Lahore Press Club here on Thursday, Inzamam while saying that the three players committed a major wrong by getting involved in spot-fixing during the 2010 tour of England, underscored all of them should be treated equally as they had completed punishment.

“They [Salman Butt, Moham*mad Asif and Mohammad Amir] were penalised [by the ICC]. However, only Amir made a comeback to the national team after completing the five-year ban,” Inzamam, who retired from international cricket after featuring in 120 Tests and 378 ODIs, added.

Says all players deserve equal treatment after serving punishments

“All the players involved in spot-fixing cases should be penalised under the laws of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Then after completing their punishment they can come back [to national team],” reckoned Inzamam who quit international cricket in 2007.

Commenting on the ongoing PSL spot-fixing case, Inzamam lamented opener Sharjeel Khan, who along with four other cricketers is presently suspended over his alleged involvement in the case, was a good batsman but lamented that the entire cricketing career of the left-hander was now in jeopardy.

Amid reported tussle between the PCB and the FIA over the ongoing probe into PSL spot-fixing scandal, the chief selector insisted that the PCB was an independent body which he said was in a position to take its own decisions.

Meanwhile, Inzamam said the successful staging of the high-profile PSL final in Lahore was a major step towards international cricket revival in Pakistan.

Expressing his views on Mohammad Hafeez’s selection in the national squad for the forthcoming West Indies tour, Inzamam said the seasoned top-order batsman was picked after he passed the physical fitness test.

Lahore Press Club president Shahbaz Mian on the occasion announced lifetime membership for Inzamam, the hero of the 1992 World Cup.

Inzy please ....

These type of comments completely set the wrong precedent time and time again - what message will send to the fixers and would-be fixers that we have. That you can fix and get caught only to return after serving "punishment".

Complete and utter disgrace this is...

Life ban for the fixers along with criminal charges regardless of their stature, achievements or potential.

Are there any sane people left in Pakistan to run a public body????

This is unbelievable.

What would life-baning send a message? That come and play couple of matches, earn millions then live a life free of commitment to pay your country back which trained you all the way.

I agree.

They should fix, come back again and fix again and come back again.

We should offer universal amnesty to fixers.

Why not name it Fixers 11?

Is there any precedent of a fixer who has served his punishment returning and fixing again? I don't think so!

The whole point of the News of the World Saleem Malik sting is that he had got away with it before. He hasn't been punished or rehabilitated.

One of the lessons I have drawn from the Sharjeel/Irfan/Zulfiqar incident is that Mohammad Amir appears to be at lower risk of (re)offending than the average in the Pakistan national team.

Sometimes in life punishment and rehabilitation actually work.

inzi statement reminds me of my childhood days . when i use to forgot to do my homework and my teacher punished me for the same by throwing me out of the class & saying " u can't enter the class unless u finish ur homework"
what i mean to say is he sound so lenient towards fixers
i mean do he even know what he is talking about ? he should listen to himself before talking to the media and making such bizarre statements.

And then PCB wonders why no one respects them.

And they tend to take the moral high ground reg BCCI/ICC issues.

There is a limit to every nonsense.

Inzi the revolutionary at it again.

Yes if they are not banned for life they should why not ... punishment is not to ruin someones life but to correct it.

Seriously?

This coming from the chief selector.

Well keep fixing fellas and once you get caught don't worry at all, just do your time and comeback as a savior/hero

Pakistan national selection committee chairman Inzamamul Haq on Thursday said that head coach Mickey Arthur had no role in the non-selection of right-arm pacer Sohail Khan.

Sohail, adjudged the best bowler of the recently concluded Pakistan Super League, was overlooked for the limited-overs series which are going to face West Indies in the upcoming series.

“Arthur didn’t tell us to drop Sohail and [former ODI captain Azhar Ali] from the ODI and T20I squads,” cleared Inzamam while talking to journalists at the Lahore Press Club.

The 47-year-old then shed light on other selections made for the four-T20I and three-ODI series in the Caribbean.

“Kamran [Akmal] was selected as a batsman because of his consistent performances in the domestic circuit and during the PSL2,” said Inzamam. “[Limited-overs captain] Sarfraz [Ahmed] will keep the wickets even in the presence of Kamran.”

Inzamam also backed the selection of veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez. “He [Hafeez] passed the fitness test and the team will also benefit from his all-round abilities.”

On PSL spot-fixing case

The PSL spot-fixing case is the talk of town at the moment and former Pakistan captain, when asked about his perspective, said the players should be punished in accordance with the International Cricket Council’s code of ethics.

“Players should not put their career in jeopardy by getting involved in spot-fixing,” said Inzamam. “In 2010, players involved in spot-fixing were punished severely and this time too the decision will be taken in accordance with the laws.”

I don't understand why this is a negative? If someone has spot fixed and they have been punished, what is the problem? Is spot fixing as bad or even a crime when compared to murderers, tax dodgers, con artists, thieves and so on? And yet all these people are allowed to serve their time and reintegrated into society. There are convicted murderers walking the streets of probably every city on the planet. Why aren't spot fixers allowed to be able to reintegrate into their own profession?

Of course, all of that follows onto such people being properly punished (after they have been properly educated on what to do when they are approached). If they serve their punishment, come back and spot fix again, then raise punishment. I think there should be a 3 strike rule.

Spot fix, get a year ban, a considerable fine. Second conviction, 5 year ban, a bigger fine. Third conviction and the player should be banned for life.

There is no way he would have selected the team without the views of Head Coach Mickey Arthur.

They should be banned for life. So there shouldn't be a chance for them to comeback.

Inzi setting the ground for a possible Salman Butt return?

We all know how Inzi loves to bring back oldies and TTFs, he must be itching to unleash the Butt onto the test side.

Forget spot fixing. I love the fact that the threshold for Hafeez to be selected (he has passed his fitness test) is different from the rest (performance).

Inzi is right. You cannot have one rule for Amir and another rule for Butt & Asif. All of them did fixing.

In a sense he is right - as in equality. But given the work put in after Amir/Butt/Azif, no excuse for more such cases.

Too late. Amir has been selected and now they have to bring Asif and Butt too.

These 3 should have been banned for life in the 1st place. But they have served there punishment so if they are performing in domestic cricket there is a chance for them to return to international cricket.

Let's hope PCB isn't so lenient with Sharjeel,Latif, and the others involved.

Like typical Pakistanis, some posters here have no sense of justice or merit. There is no justice in banning Sharjeel for more than five years and there is no meritocracy in keeping Butt and Asif out of the team, if they are among the best players from Pakistan. Let them do their time when they have committed a crime but no need to take anyone's livelihood away.

but than can youe see after 5 years any player will give the best per after ban

Good form or not - only a life ban will prevent players from fixing again.

A 5 year ban will do nothing and players will still take the chance knowing they can get away with it and if they get caught - they will be back after a few years.

Lucky for Salman Butt that he lives in a society which accepts- and expects - corruption. Inzamam was a great, instinctive batsman but being a selector requires an element of intelligence and he never possessed any of that. It would be better if he went back to his post-cricket hibernation.
