A 14 man squad has been named for the BLACKCAPS opening two ANZ ODI matches of the Chappell-Hadlee series against Australia, including potential debutant Tom Blundell.

BLACKCAPS squad

 • Kane Williamson (c)
 • Tom Blundell
 • Trent Boult
 • Neil Broom
 • Colin de Grandhomme
 • Lockie Ferguson
 • Martin Guptill
 • Matt Henry
 • Tom Latham
 • Colin Munro
 • Jimmy Neesham
 • Mitchell Santner
 • Tim Southee
 • Ross Taylor

Luke Ronchi, Ben Wheeler, Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan and Doug Bracewell were not available due to injury, while Corey Anderson was considered as a batsman only.

BLACKCAPS selector Gavin Larsen said that in Blundell and Tom Latham, the side had options at wicketkeeper.

“It’s hard to replace the experience that Luke brings, but it's good Tom Blundell got a small taste of the environment during the Twenty20 series against Bangladesh and this will be another opportunity for him in the squad,” said Larsen.

“Having Tom Latham as an option gives the squad flexibility and allows us the chance to play an extra bowling option. He's done it before for us, but we’ll look to give Tom an opportunity to have a game with the gloves in the Ford Trophy before the opening match.”

Larsen said that the batting line-up had a balanced look to it.

“We have a number of options to consider in the middle order and having Ross and Neil in there gives the batting line-up a much more experienced look to it than the squad which toured Australia."

"Australia have shown how dangerous they are, but with the Chappell-Hadlee trophy on the line at home, we know we have an exciting opportunity.”

I do wonder if Colin de Grandhomme will actually bother anyone outside NZ (and against any team other than Pakistan!)

Waste of time, haven't they just played ODI series?
Whats the point in having a series again just after a month or so?

Wait a minute didn't they play each other like last month or something

Guptill is finished, surprised they're still persisting with him, let's see for how much longer.

Munro should be promoted, clearly the future for NZ.

Up until the 2015 series in Australia, these sides didn't face each other a lot so it's good for NZ they are playing there rivals more often.

Colin Munro has unequivocally shown the world that he is one of the most mediocre players to play at the international level.

He doesn't have the ability to consistently rotate the strike nor a basic batting acumen i.e to refrain from going after the bowlers before getting your eye in.

And at 30 years of age is it logical to deem Munro the future of NZ cricket?

Australia name squad for series versus New Zealand

The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel have named the following 14-man squad for the Qantas Tour of New Zealand where they will contest the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in a three-match series.

 • Steve Smith (C) - New South Wales
 • Pat Cummins - New South Wales
 • Aaron Finch - Victoria
 • James Faulkner - Tasmania
 • Peter Handscomb - Victoria
 • Josh Hazlewood - New South Wales
 • Travis Head - South Australia
 • Shaun Marsh - Western Australia
 • Glenn Maxwell - Victoria
 • Mitchell Starc - New South Wales
 • Billy Stanlake - Queensland
 • Marcus Stoinis - Victoria
 • Matthew Wade - Victoria
 • Adam Zampa - South Australia

The squad includes two changes from the current side that is playing in the Victoria Bitter Series against Pakistan.

Victorian opening batsman Aaron Finch has been re-called to the squad with vice-captain David Warner having a break.

Interim National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “David has had a very big summer and will benefit from a break in cricket, both mentally and physically. He will travel to Dubai in the second group of departures to coincide with those players arriving from the one-day series in New Zealand.

“This gives Aaron an opportunity to return to the side. His form in the Big Bash League has been very good and he has earnt his recall.”

Western Australian batsman Shaun Marsh also returns to the one-day side with Queensland batsman Usman Khawaja heading to Dubai early to prepare for the Qantas Tour of India.

“With Usman heading to Dubai in the first group of players this provides Shaun with a chance to get back into international cricket following his injury earlier in the summer,” said Mr Hohns.

Players named in this squad are not available to play in the KFC Big Bash League Final as they will depart for New Zealand on 27 January.

Khawaja will depart for Dubai on 30 January with the remainder of the Qantas Tour of India Test-only players, and Warner will follow on 5 February to coincide with the arrival of the remaining Test players from New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Billy Stanlake will not travel with the squad to Adelaide for the final ODI but will instead travel to New Zealand on January 26 with Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch a day ahead of the remainder of the squad.

Yes the current 8th ranked ODI batsman who just scored a brilliant century against aussie like a month ago is "finished".

Somehow i think he will be persisted with for quite a while yet.

Aussies will walk this one as always. NZ are still much better then Pak though.

As always? Lol, NZ won the last ODI series between these sides in NZ less than 12 months ago. If you don't know home advantage is a huge factor when NZ/Aus play ODIs, especially in the last decade, you don't know anything.

Perhaps home advantage is a factor but 9/10 times the Aussies will tank them. They are also on form at the moment and ready to makes kiwi's out of the black cap's.

We're going to get smashed unless we get the slower pitches we had last year.

Yep, totally ignore the context of those games...

Facing an attack that consists of Boland, Richardson, Hastings and Hazlewood is tougher than facing the current Australian attack (Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Stanlake)

Skipper Smith ruled out of NZ tour

Australia captain Steve Smith has been ruled out of Australia’s upcoming one-day international tour of New Zealand with an ankle injury.

Smith today confirmed he won’t join the ODI squad going to New Zealand for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series having suffered an ankle ligament injury which requires 7-10 days of recovery.

He isn’t expected to be in doubt for next month’s four-Test tour of India.

The National Selection Panel will have a phone hook-up later today to decide on Smith’s replacement for the NZ tour, with vice-captain David Warner being rested from the trans-Tasman series.

It was originally planned that Steve Smith would join Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc and Matthew Wade in heading to a Dubai training camp to prepare for the India tour after the Chappell-Hadlee series.

Smith today suggested his injury wouldn't stop him from training in Dubai.

Eight players not involved with the ODI squad (Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw, Ashton Agar, Steve O'Keefe, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson, Mitchell Marsh and Jackson Bird) were scheduled to fly to Dubai on Monday.

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced that Matthew Wade will captain Australia on its Qantas Tour of New Zealand.

The appointment was recommended by CA’s National Selection Panel (NSP) and endorsed by CA’s Board of Directors.

Wade’s appointment as Australia’s 24th One-Day International (ODI) captain follows the ankle injury sustained by Steve Smith during the side’s 57-run win against Pakistan in the fifth and final Victoria Bitter One-Day International at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

And with Smith absent for the ODI series against the hosts that features matches in Auckland (30 January), Napier (2 February) and Hamilton (5 February), the NSP has called up 21 year-old Queensland and Brisbane Heat batsman Sam Heazlett to replace him in New Zealand.

CA Interim Selector Trevor Hohns said: “We had a few options as captain in the absence of Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner but Matthew Wade was the logical option given his leadership experience with Victoria and the fact he is very much a leader within the group already.

“We did discuss the situation with David Warner, but after doing so the NSP made the decision that it was in his best interests and in the best interests of the team that we continued with our original plan to give him a break for this series. That was our call and, that way, we will ensure David is fresh and ready to go in the build-up to the Test series in India that follows.

“With Steve not fit to play we have taken the opportunity to introduce another exciting young player to the Australian team environment and international cricket by including Sam Heazlett.

“Sam showed last summer what a talented player he is by averaging over 40 in his debut season at first-class level and he impressed again when playing for the National Performance Squad against A teams from Australia, South Africa and India in Townsville and Mackay during this past winter.”

Matthew Wade said: “Being asked to captain Australia is obviously not something I was expecting and it is still sinking in, but I am hugely honoured by the decision of the selectors and the Board of Directors and very excited about it.

“With Steve Smith and David Warner absent it’s an opportunity for me to captain the side for three matches but I’m not about to change too much and it’s a case of trying to continue the disciplines that have earned us success in the recent past.”

Wade and his team-mates who took part in the Adelaide ODI, along with Bupa Support Staff Head Coach Darren Lehmann, are due to arrive in Auckland overnight on Friday and Wade is expected to be available to speak with media on Saturday afternoon.

Details of Heazlett’s departure from Australia and his arrival into New Zealand will be confirmed and announced in due course.

The NSP is made up of Trevor Hohns (Interim Chairman), Greg Chappell, Darren Lehmann and Mark Waugh.

Yet another Australian batsman who is incapable of handling any half decent spinner.

Heazlett's credentials against the swinging ball isn't the greatest either.

Convict, thoughts on his selection?

Never had much of an opportunity to see him play.

He did perform very well against South Africa A in August though.

Prefer his selection over some 33 year old has been like Cameron White. Personally I would have opted for Ashton Turner.

Guptill ruled out of ANZ ODI in Napier | Brownlie called in

Martin Guptill will miss the second ANZ ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee in Napier, after feeling tightness in his hamstring during the opening match at Eden Park.

Coach Mike Hesson said it was a minor hamstring strain and as a precautionary measure Guptill won’t be considered for the second ODI.

“Martin felt tightness in his left hamstring while fielding yesterday and after being monitored over the last 24 hours it’s become apparent he won’t quite be ready for Napier.“

"He’ll remain with the team and we’ll continue to monitor him ahead of the third ODI in Hamilton.”

Northern Districts batsman Dean Brownlie has been called into the side and will join the team this afternoon.

The BLACKCAPS lead the series 1-0.

Haha this is just not true. The Chappell Hadlee is the one day trophy these two sides play for and as of now it's like Aust 14 wins to NZ's 13 wins.

Not quite 9/10. Please research prior to making incorrect assumptive comments

We are not talking about them playing Pakistan here, NZ are a good ODI side.

Have a look at the overall record between Australia and New Zealand in all formats of the game. NZ are a decent one day side but the Aussies are better and I expect them to win easily. Just becoz NZ defeated Pak doesn't mean they will do so Aus as well.

Looking at Aus vs NZ history head to head dating back to the 1970s is irrelevant, the Chappell Hadlee series has been played in the last decade or so between the sides and it's very even, as I said it's Aus 14 and NZ 13, so it couldn't be closer.

Best example of why looking at the whole history is irrelevant, is NZ vs Pakistan numbers. If you look at their entirely history Pakistan are well ahead of NZ, but if you look at the last 5 years or so, NZ have won about 8 games to Pakistan's 2.

I'll be surprised if NZ don't win this series 3-0 since Warner and Smith are out, even with Guptill, Milne and McClenaghan out with injury.

Did you also know NZ won the ODI series against Australia less than 12 months ago in NZ conditions with Warner and Smith?

Don't put NZ in Pakistan's box, NZ are one of the best ODI sides around these days and Pakistan are one of the worst. Not only has NZ thrashed Pakistan in NZ in recent years, I think the last 6-7 games in a row, but they even won the series in the UAE last time they played without McCullum and 2-3 other top players like Boult Southee etc

Matthew Wade to return home from the Qantas Tour of New Zealand.

Matthew Wade will return home from the Qantas Tour of New Zealand, it was confirmed this afternoon.

The wicketkeeper, who was appointed captain for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy One-Day International series, injured his back during preparations for the opening encounter in Auckland and so missed that six-run loss at Eden Park on Monday.

And after further discussions following his failure to recover sufficiently for Thursday’s game two in Napier it was decided he will return to Melbourne for treatment with a view to ensuring he is fit for the Qantas Tour of India, including a pre-series training camp at the International Cricket Council Academy in Dubai.

Aaron Finch, who stood in for Wade as captain on Monday, will take charge of the two remaining matches in the series, in Napier (2 February) and Hamilton (5 February). No replacement player will be drafted into the squad.

Cricket Australia Chief Medical Officer Doctor John Orchard said: “With Matthew not being fit for Thursday’s game in Napier it has been decided to send him home for an assessment and treatment in Melbourne, with a view to him being fit for the tour of India and the training camp in Dubai that precedes it. We are hopeful this injury will settle down relatively quickly and that he will be able to participate in that tour without any issues.”

Matthew Wade said: “It’s not a major injury but with the short turnaround between matches and the four-and-a-half hour journey by bus to Hamilton for the next match, it’s been decided it’s best for me to go home and get some treatment in Melbourne.

“With Dubai and then India I’d say I’d definitely be right for that. I’ll get that bit of treatment in Melbourne and we’re hopeful it’ll be fine by Sunday or Monday and I can be on a flight to Dubai and start training pretty much as soon as I hit the ground there.

“It’s happened to me once before, in Ireland a couple of years ago. I did it the day before the game then and was right to go the next day. This one’s just taken a little bit more time and there’s no reason why that’s happened. Sometimes you recover really quickly and at other times it’s a little slower.

“It’s heartbreaking I couldn’t take the field as captain but it’s been a real honour to have been appointed captain and to be able to lead the group in the time I’ve been here in New Zealand. And after all, it’s all about the team, it’s not about me. Hopefully we can win the next two games and win the series.”

You are the one thinking that NZ defeating Pak means they'll do the Aussies as well! Let me tell you that by and large the Aussies are much better the NZ. I do know that New Zealand do up their game for Australia and have a few good wins that you are getting carried away with.

Australia will miss their absent players but they will have good alternatives up their sleeve unlike Pakistan who are full off overrated or rubbish players. Generally, Australia are still better then New Zealand that will show in the coming series. I am only referring history as a benchmark that even today the balance is still in favour of Australia.

The reason it is farcical to make a blanket statement that australia beat NZ 9/10 times in ODIs which you said, is simply because in the last decade in Hadlee Chappell games it's currently Aust 14 wins and NZ 13 wins, including New Zealand winning the last series in NZ conditions less than 12 months ago and are already 1-0 up in this one.

The recent history between NZ & Aust in ODIs has absolutely nothing to do with Pakistan whotsoever.

I only brought Pakistan into it when you ignorantly suggested Aust win 9/10 games and I made the point this is NZ they are playing now who are a good odi side and your 9 out of 10 quote might apply to Pakistan who are probably the worst ODI side in the world at the moment and NOT NZ.

Ignorance is when you say recent Pak history has nothing to do with the coming series then foolishly explain why you bought it up! What a ridiculous thing to say, you're losing the plot!! There is nothing farcical about predicting that the Aussies should win the coming series starting in a few hours though past matches may have no practical effect it does give Australia a psychological advantage for sure. 9/10 times Aus will defeat your beloved NZ anywhere in the world and I expect them to be successful again. We are talking about one dayers here not Tests that you are on about played 12 months back or something. The Aussies will be on a high after spanking Pakistan, we played badly because the Aussies were too good for us.

Wagner fractures finger

BLACKCAPS pace bowler Neil Wagner is in doubt for the upcoming ANZ Test series against South Africa after fracturing his left ring finger.

Wagner sustained the injury while fielding a ball off his own bowling during a Ford Trophy game for the Otago Volts on Wednesday.

BLACKCAPS coach Mike Hesson said time would tell in terms of Wagner’s return.

“The initial assessment is that Neil will require four to six weeks for recovery, but we’ll be in a position to make a better judgement on that in the next couple of weeks.

“Neil’s an important member of our Test side and he is obviously desperate to play in such a big series, so we’ll do everything we can to get him back on the park as soon as possible."

The three match ANZ Test series begins in Dunedin on 8 March.

NZC MEDIA RELEASE
3 February 2017

Sodhi selected for final ANZ ODI of Chappell-Hadlee

Ish Sodhi has been called into the BLACKCAPS squad for the third ANZ ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee series against Australia on Sunday.

Martin Guptill’s availability for the third ODI remains uncertain, which will see Dean Brownlie travel with the squad to Hamilton. Tom Blundell will drop out of the squad and return to Wellington.

BLACKCAPS Selector Gavin Larsen said conditions obviously played a part in the selection.

“History shows that the Seddon Park pitch can be spin friendly and for that reason Ish has been brought into the squad,” said Larsen.

“We wanted the option of two specialist spinners for this match and it’s a venue that Ish has had some success in at in the past. Mike and Kane will now get the opportunity to assess the pitch over the next couple of days and make a decision from there as to who will be in the playing eleven.”

Larsen said there was still a question mark over Guptill.

“Martin has made progress in the last couple of days, but it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be available for selection. At this stage it’s probably 50-50."

The BLACKCAPS lead the series 1-0, with the final match beginning at 11am on Sunday.
