Sri Lanka [114/3] beat India [112] by 7 wickets to win 1st ODI in Dharamsala

From what angle is Sanju Samson talented?

His List A average is 28.57 and SR 78.43.

He isn't even good enough to be playing list A matches in my opinion.

And even his T20 numbers are very average.

He constantly loses matches for whatever side he plays for. He only kept getting picked because Rahul Dravid for some reason adores him.

I am simply going by IPL. He can play good speedy knocks and score 3;'s and 40's at 150 S/R. Same with Pant. They are good enough to play LOI's. Of course they are not ready for Test cricket. You need a better Keeper batsmen than them.

If you look at Dickwella, he is a decent keeper and batsman. Pant and Samson can do that job for India at least in T20's.

Also, MSD is the perfect player for India to bail India out of miserable situations like these. But these kids of situations are rare. Most of the times when MSD comes in, India are 220/5 in 38 overs. At that point, India needs acceleration which MSD cannot provide. I cannot count how many times MSD came in and killed all the momentum and India end up with only 300 instead of 330 or 340.

MSD is the best keeper in LOI's for sure. But as a batsman, barring crisis situations, off late he was very mediocre.

This ball will not move even a millimeter after 5 overs.

Already BK did not get any movement close to what Lakmal and Mathews got.

Good thing with Lankan openers is that they are playing full blooded drives and getting beaten instead of pokes that Indian batsmen did.

Not talking abt test cricket.

Samson has AWFUL List A figures and he played 100+ games.

And even in IPL his SR is 121 which is the minimum acceptable SR. There are minimum 30 batsmen in India who deserve a chance much more than him.

Pant and Samson are not the same person. Pant is very very good and Samson very very bad, as their stats will show.

That was a pathetic shot from Gunathilaka. Ball is not doing much and yet he looked all at sea playing Bumrah.

I rate Pant more than Samson. But Samson is also talented. He has brain fades more often than Pant and throws it away.

India must replace MSD with Pant or Samson or even Ishan Kishan.

Is it possible that anyone talented enough to play for India has a List A average of 27 and SR 75 after 100 games?

Why this special pleading syndrome for Samson when countless Indians have so much better stats and performances than him? Even just left to WK batsmen, Uthappa, CM Gautam, Parthiv Patel, Kedar Jadhav, DK, Wriddhiman Saha, Lokesh Rahul etc are miles better batsmen then him.

This match seems to share commonness with that famous (infamous for continuing with an ordinary cricketer like binny) Bangladesh match which was also a very low-scoring match. India should have practiced here rather than palying Srilanka for 3-4 weeks before the SA tour.

I am impressed by some of the performances in IPL. He will be good enough for T20 cricket. He murdered the likes of Steyn and looked at total ease.

If KL can keep wickets in T20 matches, he will be perfect fit. He adds to the batting depth and out batting will be massively upgraded too.

Samson is too flash.Pant is much better

This is really bad from the pacers. Like I always feel that man arun (bowling coach) is useless trash. He worked with Indian team earlier and the same result, tons for opponent batsmen and stuns our own fans. Pathetic performance to say the least from the batsmen. No application, save Dhoni. Everyone wants to hit their way to be a hero on this pitch. This match will have only one headline, I will glad if I am wrong - "Indian cricket team reaches himalayas and drops to bay of bengal in performance"

Conditions.

The first 1.5 hrs of the match, the ball was doing a lot. India lost 7 wickets and it is hard to comeback after that. The pitch eased after that and MSD was able to play all his shots. Even Kuldeep looked confident.

Once the pitch flattened out, 112 was an easy chase.

Toss was crucial and on pitches like these, Toss decides everything.

Lets wait for the next ODI and see how it goes. On point, Arun is a pathetic coach. But this loss has nothing to do with his coaching.

This was the same Sri Lanka team Pakistan were killing, they just turned up and ran over India.

India clearly being exposed as a one-two man team here. No kohli, No party

Good win by Sri Lanka and congrats to them. But I still think this was a one-off win for them. India is a way better team than them though they rely very much on Kohli and Dhoni. (and conditions of course)

Most Indian batsmen are dreadful on any surface other than proper highways, so this performance doesn't really come as a surprise. Good performance from Dhoni though.

Bravo. Fantastic performances as usual from the biggest FTB of this generation, Rohit Sharma, and the rest of his overhyped crew.

I'd say India were unlucky to not have Kohli here but that would be a lie. Kohli would be owned in these conditions as well.

The only silver lining is that India have now played on a few seam-friendly pitches and should be used to them by now.

Was the pitch 30-7 bad?

We are talking about a pro team which is considered a force in International cricket. Finalists of Champions trophy recently. We expect such a team to adjust to conditions and put up a face saving total at the very least. No way in hell was 220 an impossible total to achieve on this pitch. Indian batsmen should have done better. They wont always get roads to bat on.

Yes. I agreewith your view, this performance was largely due to conditions. What is the excuse for Bumrah's no-ball bowling (sadly, I think his grandfather's suicide - missing at the point of playing - match might have cause his disturbed mindset)what about Bhuvaneshwar he was supposed to take atleast 2-3 wickets. Again I understand conditions improved dramatically, but new-ball-bowling was his speciality. Having arun in the team is as good as having unclean toilet. As for the batsmen, all behave as if they have just won the world cup. Only Kohli and to an extent Dhoni can have the swagger what did others achieve for the team with their performances, especially the ODI team. It is the manner in which they lost, total surrender which reminds of CT 2017 causes not so good feeling about this team. SL could have eventually won the game I would have been happy if India put up at least 175 and they took 5-6 wickets of SL. That would have been a better performance on a very bad day for the no#2 team.

To be fair when Pakistan beat SL recently (and India tour of SL) they didn't have their dynamic batsmen like Asela,KJP and experienced bowlers like Nuwan Pradeep and Mathews due to injuries they only had slow test batsmen like Kusal Mendis and Chandimal and useless players like Milinda and Kapugedara.. but this full powered SL team beat India easily in CT 17 and nearly beat Pakistan too. Now if they can replace that useless Thirimanne with KJP they will become more powerful :angelo

Yes, India should have put up a better perfrmance with the bat. But once Dhawan/Rohit were gone, I knew India would not make more than 175.

Our middle order has been pathetic for a while now. With the influx of TTF's and mental midgets, the team cannot afford to lose top order for nothing.

I mean, who in the right frame of mind will have guys like Karthik, Jadhav, Pandey to boot along with a newbie like Iyer in the middle order? This has been going on for a while now. Until India fixes this issue, we will continue to see major collapses like today and the CT2017 Finals.

By the time Indian seamers came out to bat, it was a top wicket to play your shots. Indians did manage a couple of wickets in the first 7 overs. Another one should have come if not for a no-ball. I am not going to blame Indian bowlers at all.

As I said, the match was lost at the toss. This was a horrendous wicket for an ODI. This wicket shoudl have been laid out for the 3rd Test and the 3rd Test wicket would have been a perfect ODI wicket.

The likes of Shastri seems to be stubborn. Giving chances to oldies and mediocre players. Pandey should be kicked out. He is a mental midget. I would rather have Rahane than a timid Pandey.

The need of the hour is finding a solution for the middle order. If that is not fixed, we have to totally depend on Top3 and hope for the best.

Totally with you on the selection. Add Dhoni to that list - today's was like a flash in a pan. Him and Yuvi are finished for a long time. Losing with promising younger players is better than losing with these people.
