Shakib Al Hasan might not be too keen to read into his team's standing in this Asia Cup but truth be told, performances will matter. There's a World Cup to be played in very similar climes after all but, more importantly, these fixtures kickstart the battle of one-upmanship in what's a very crowded Asian pool. For there's Bangladesh and Afghanistan too now, two nations with very decent ODI outfits who are desperate to make a mark in World Cups and who will secretly know that this edition in India could be their best chance to do that.

This entire interplay is what makes Thursday's clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh a very interesting affair. Sri Lanka might have breezed through the World Cup qualifiers but the challenge they are going to come up against here will be several times over. And having to qualify for a World Cup, especially with their history, comes with its own baggage, something that Bangladesh will be aware of. That they registered their maiden bilateral series win over Sri Lanka the last time they played them will only help their confidence.

That said, Sri Lanka will be taking on Bangladesh at home and that shakes up the dynamic just that little bit. But Dasun Shanaka's side will rue the absence of mainstays in Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara and Dilshan Madhushanka, all of whom are out with injuries, leaving Sri Lanka to fend with whatever little they have on their plate.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be looking to emerge from the shadows of their veterans, the overdependence on whom has plagued them in the past. Fortunately, there are several young names to stake a claim. Five members from the victorious Under-19 World Cup team have been included in the Asia Cup squad and how Bangladesh allow them to flourish could be crucial to their chances.

When: Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Match, Group B, August 31, 02:30 PM LOCAL

Where: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: Thundershowers are predicted at the start of the match. The playing surfaces at Pallekele often have something for both batters and bowlers, and expect more of the same this time around. The last ODI played here saw Ibrahim Zadran score 162, Rashid Khan pick a four-wicket haul and Kasun Rajitha return 3 for 60.

Team News & Tactics:

Sri Lanka:Struggling with a slew of injuries to several key players, Sri Lanka will need to make adjustments to put a balanced XI on the field. Dushan Hemantha, a legspinning all-rounder, is likely to fill in for the injured Wanindu Hasaranga. It's unclear whether Kusal Perera, who is part of the squad but is recovering from Covid-19, is fit to play.

Bangladesh: Litton Das is out of Asia Cup with an illness and Anamul Haque has been added as his replacement. He, though, is unlikely yo get a game with Tanzim Tamim and Naim Sheikh set to open. Playing two offspinners is on the table considering there are several left-handed batters in the opposition.

What they said:

"Yes, of course he (Litton) is a big miss as he was part of this team for the last four-five years consistently and he has been playing very well in the last couple of years. Having said that, this will give someone else an opportunity. As for Anamul replacing Litton, it's a like-for-like replacement as both of them are wicket-keepers and bat at the top of the order. We don't have a second wicket-keeper and it is a factor for us because in case something happens to Mushfiq bhai during a game, especially concussion or small injuries and he cannot keep in that game, we need a second wicket-keeper" - Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh captain.

Squads:

Sri Lanka Squad: Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis(w), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka(c), Dushan Hemantha, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Kusal Perera, Pramod Madushan, Dunith Wellalage, Binura Fernando

Bangladesh Squad: Tanzid Hasan, Mohammad Naim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Afif Hossain, Anamul Haque, Nasum Ahmed, Shamim Hossain, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

Sri Lanka unfazed by injuries ahead of Bangladesh clash

KANDY: Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka said on Wednesday the defending champions will challenge every team in the Asia Cup despite injuries to several key players.

Sri Lanka, co-hosting the tournament with Pakistan, face Bangladesh on Thursday after injuries forced them to drop two key players at the last minute.

They won the tournament in the T20 format last year but it reverts to the ODI format as a prelude to the 50-over World Cup in India, which starts on October 5.

“We are playing in our backyard, so have the home advantage,” Shanaka told reporters in Pallekele. “There are a few players not participating due to injury but still I think we have got a pretty good side who can challenge all the teams.”

Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and fast-bowler Dushmantha Chameera will sit out the tournament after being named in the original 15-member squad but Shanaka said his team remained confident.

“There is no pressure at all,” he said.

Sri Lanka were underdogs at the previous Asia Cup in Dubai and were expected to bow out after losing their opening match to Afghanistan.

Interest this year remains focused on the rivalry between India and Pakistan, with potential for Asian cricket’s two giants to face each other three times before the World Cup.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was unfazed by the India-Pakistan hype.

“They are the favourites, so people will talk about them more,” Shakib said. “But having said that, Sri Lanka have won the Asia Cup plenty of times, so they are one of the favourites.”

Bangladesh have made the Asia Cup final three times but are still searching for their first trophy.

Emotions have often hampered Bangladesh’s performance, which Shakib acknowledged was the case in Dubai last year.

“Emotion-wise we have to play the game and see where we are at this moment,” he said. “I think the dressing room is calmer and that is a good thing.”

Star all-rounder Shakib said a good performance would raise their expectations ahead of the World Cup. “Asia Cup is not a small tournament, it has history, it has some big games,” he said. “We are taking this tournament seriously. If we do well here it will give us confidence building up to the World Cup.”

Bangladesh suffered a setback Wednesday as batsman Liton Das was ruled out of the tournament with viral fever. The Bangladesh Cricket Board said Liton had been unable to travel and named Anamul Haque as his replacement.

Anamul, whose last ODI appearance for Bangladesh was in December against India, was due to join the Bangladesh squad later Wednesday ahead of the match against Sri Lanka.

The 30-year-old right-hander has played 44 ODIs and scored 1,254 runs, including three centuries.

“(Anamul) has been in the runs in domestic cricket,” chairman of the national selection panel Minhajul Abedin said. “Due to Liton’s unavailability, we needed a top-order batter who could keep wicket, and Anamul got the nod.”

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to bat

Shakib Al Hasan: We will bat first. Looks to me a dry wicket, hopefully we can put the runs on the board. We know Sri Lanka are a very good team, we have to be at our best in batting, bowling and fielding. We have got three seamers and three spinners in our squad.

Dasun Shanaka: We would have liked to bat first but it is a good toss to lose with rain around. Genertally, I expect some turn here because there’s a bit of tear in these wickets. Very much excited. We have six batters, two all-rounders and three genuine bowlers. Mateesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage are playing.

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Mohammad Naim, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis(w), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka(c), Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana

Brilliant start for Sri Lanka with that early wicket! 🔥 But knowing Bangladesh, they always come back strong

Unfortunate for Naim! Played some good shots but that delivery from Dhananjaya got the better of him. Well caught by Nissanka

May be its me, but it seems like these modern day cameramen do not have stable equipment. I find the visuals shakes a bit.

Bangladesh in a tricky spot now, Shakib falling to Pathirana's deceptive delivery, brilliant catch by Mendis

Shanto adapting well to Pathirana's deliveries! That confident hook for a boundary and smart play to keep the strike.

so wait, yesterday was not the real asia cup?
He means Nepal was an associate nation so the outcome was obvious whereas Sri lanka and Bangladesh have had even encounters in their last few games so this is the first match that will be a nail biter and not a one sided minnow abusing stomp.

Where is Litton das? And Shanto is a terrible no 3 batting at 68 strike rate.

Where are the posers who critique babar now?

Shanto strike rate of 70, unacceptable lol.

For all those saying spin is overrated, Nepal and Sri Lanka bowled so much spin this Asia cup.

That's why we need saud.

Bangladesh should be disappointed with this performance. 230 would be par here with 250 a winning total.

Gross pitch need Phulkay bowlers and spinners for this pitch, cant be bowling 130 plus on this pitch. We need proper batsman if pitches are like this in Asia cup, saud in Aga Out period.

Bangaldesh need 6 wickets before Sri lanka gets to 100 to make it close.

Sri lanka 100 for 6, and we have a gane here.

If a parternship develops game over.

Bangladesh v Afghanistan is going to be a potential knock out. I would want Bangla to win honestly. Cant stand Afghan attitude.

Afghanistan will have the edge in that game, they recently beat Bangla in their backyard in an ODI series.

As easy as it gets

Shakib: It wasn't a 300 wicket. 220-230 would've given us more chance. I couldn't do it today as a team. Didn't bat well as a unit. Have to regroup, have another important game in a couple of days. Needed couple more wickets when they were 3 down for 30. We picked up wickets but didn't have enough on the board. There were a lot of nerves when we started the game. Lot of guys playing Asia Cup for first time. They've been playing good cricket that's why they're in dressing room.

Samarawickrama: It was not easy at that time, two wickets down early, my plan was to be positive and at the same time build a partnership. It’s not easy to bat on this wicket, spinning and a bit slow and a bit in it for the fast bowlers. I have always backed my strength, normally cover drive and pull shot and I try to stay positive.

Spinner Maheesh Theekshana struck early before Pathirana joined forces to dismiss Bangladesh for 164 in the opener of the Sri Lanka leg of the 50-over tournament, a precursor to October's ODI World Cup in India.

Sadeera Samarawickrama, who made 54, and Charith Asalanka, unbeaten on 62, guided the chase in their key stand of 78 after Sri Lanka lost their openers early and slipped to 43-3.

Samarawickrama registered his fourth ODI half-century to raise the noise of the sparse crowd at the scenic venue.

He finally fell stumped off spinner Mahedi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan soon sent back Dhananjaya de Silva, but the left-handed Asalanka pulled the team home in 39 overs with a winning boundary.

Asalanka reached his 50 in 85 balls to play a patient knock on a pitch where run-scoring did not seem easy. Skipper Dasun Shanaka stood unbeaten on 14.

The bowlers set up victory with Pathirana, whose yorkers have earned him comparisons to Lasith Malinga, picking up key wickets including skipper Shakib and wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim.

Top-order batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto made 89 to play a lone hand in Bangladesh's innings after they elected to bat first but lasted for only 42.4 overs.

Theekshana struck first when he trapped debutant Tanzid Hasan lbw for nought while De Silva soon sent back fellow opener Mohammad Naim for 16.

Shanto, who bats at number three, stood calm after Bangladesh lost their openers and put on key partnerships including a 59-run fourth-wicket stand with Towhid Hridoy, who was next best with 20.

He registered his fourth ODI half-century and hit seven boundaries but the rest of the batting fell flat.

Pathirana got skipper Shakib caught behind for five with wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis taking a diving catch to his left.

Later he returned to wipe off the tail after Theekshana bowled Shanto with his mystery spin to end the left-hander's 122-ball knock.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz's run-out only added to Bangladesh's woes, after a mix-up with Shanto.

Sri Lanka, who won the T20 edition of the tournament in Dubai last year, are co-hosting with Pakistan and will next play Afghanistan in Lahore.

Pakistan, who won the tournament opener against Nepal, will clash with arch-rivals India in Pallekele on Saturday.

Same issues and mistakes from Bangladesh again and again.

It seems they never learn do they.

Both teams are missing their top players. It is very important to have good bench strength.Right now England and Australia have very strong bench strengths. In Englands’s cases top class players are finding it difficult to get a place in the first XI.Pakistan needs to rotate it’s bowlers. There is too much work load on Naseem,Shaheen and Haris.Need another three fast bowlers Wasim + two more.Arshad Iqbal is good.Dahani and Hasnain have potential but have not improved like Naseem.

Sri Lanka leans towards performing well in major tournaments. Despite the fitness issues among their main players they keeps the ability to battle and compete effectively.
