Sri Lanka will look to give a fitting farewell to Lasith Malinga, who plays his last one-day international at Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium on Friday, 26 July.

Overview
Sri Lanka v Bangladesh, 1st ODI
R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
26 July, 2.30pm local time, 9.00am GMT

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, fresh from a mixed campaign at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, are aiming for a winning start to the three-match ODI series. Bangladesh appear very different to the side that played the World Cup: all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (out for personal reasons) and regular skipper Mashrafe Mortaza (injury) are the most notable absentees.

A lot will rely on Tamim Iqbal, the stand-in skipper, as Bangladesh eye their first ever series win on Sri Lankan soil.

Lasith Malinga will retire from ODI cricket after Sri Lanka's game against Bangladesh in Colombo this Friday.

As for Sri Lanka, they'll look to give a perfect farewell to Malinga, one of their most loved cricketers, in his final ODI appearance.

Remember the last time

The last ODI between these two sides, the round-robin fixture at the World Cup, was washed out. In the opening game of the Asia Cup 2018 in UAE, Mushfiqur Rahim's 144 had powered Bangladesh to an emphatic 137-run win over Sri Lanka.

What they said

Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka captain: "If you take the World Cup, we did fairly well in patches. We know we need to find a wicket-taking bowler because Lasith Malinga is not available after this series. We need to find the bowlers who can take wickets in the middle and the early overs. I need some good youngsters, we need to groom some youngsters for the next World Cup."

Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh captain: "I thought we had a pretty decent World Cup. There were a few games that we should have won. We, the cricketers also felt that we could have done more. I think that whoever plays the first one-day match they need to cash in on the opportunity."

Conditions

Thundery showers and light winds are expected in Colombo with even chances of rain throughout the day. Teams batting first have won four of the last five ODIs played at the stadium and hence the toss could be a crucial factor.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat.

Sri Lanka: 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Avishka Fernando, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 Dhananjaya de Silva, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Pradeep, 10 Lahiru Kumara, 11 Lasith Malinga

Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Mohammad Mithun, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Mosaddek Hossain, 7 Sabbir Rahman, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Rubel Hossain, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Mustafizur Rahman

This guy Perera is awesome in full flow, almost single handed taken the game away.

Peerera is the batsman that can take SL cricket forward. So much talent

Mortaza as captain is not going to be easy to replace for BD.

Not much interest in this thread wonder why

I can tell you many Bangladeshis lost the spirit to support this team after finishing 8th in the WC.

Also, it is not an important series so many neutral fans may not care about it.

Bangladesh - 112/4 (22 overs).

Nice little recovery from Mushfiq and Sabbir after being 39/4.

BD needs 203 runs from 28 overs (6 wickets in hand).

Current Partnership - 87 runs, 11.2 overs, (RR: 7.67), (Mushfiqur Rahim 27, Sabbir Rahman 48).

Good knock from Sabbir, needs to finish it off to prove his worth again.

Sabbir Rahman always had the shots just struggled with temperament just like Nasir Hossain.

Sabbir and Mushfiq have done exceptionally well to keep BD in the game but the top for really did poorly and left a lot to be done.

Tamim should be dropped. He hasn't done anything for a long time. Completely out of form.

I always rated him pretty highly as he was a match winner on his day against any attack however since 2016 he has been struggling in LOIs more often than not.

Though Tamim is just 30 but I have seen many players who start young as Tamim did at 18 years of age they do get exhausted when the enter their 30s. I am not sure if Tamim's reflexes are getting are going down or he is just a bit exhausted and needs rest or motivation from somewhere to get his old groove back.

Run rate slowed down a bit. They need to score 6-7 an over.

144/4 after 27 overs.

Need 171 more from 23 overs.

I think scoring rate isnt as big an issue as loosing couple of more wickets than BD would have liked. These two are set and need to take it as deep as possible.

Sabbir just like many other times gives it away. Yes he was left with a lot to be done, but he should have given his best shot to take it deep.

153/5 after 29 overs.

Agreed. He needed to knock it around for a few more overs.

Thy are maintaining the asking, but 2 wickets down. 150 in 19 overs for 7, may be 6 wickets at hand is possible, but 5 down is too much to recover.

BD currently has no head coach. Rhodes left. Khaled Mahmud is the interim coach.

No Saifuddin today. No Shakib today. No Liton today.

191/7 after 36 overs.

Mushfiqur is trying to score a useless century. Why is he not hitting? Game is over anyway.

Bangladesh is missing Shakib quite badly. He is the backbone of the team

Very low-IQ innings from Shafiul. Thanks for coming.

9 down.

I don't understand why they are blocking with 9 down. Game is over. Have some fun. Start playing shots.

Good win for Sri Lanka, fitting end to Malinga's career

Yeah. Fitting end to the legend.

Who are replacements for Tamim?

Just a single scratchy half-century in the past 10 innings. That is bad even by associate standard.

I would say Imrul Kayes can be given another go. Liton Das also opened before and he did well (scored 121 against India as opener once). There are a few other players in the domestic scene.

We wouldn't know unless we try out different options. Tamim seems to be out of spirit and out of form.

Perrera is a unreal talent.

Sri Lanka seem to be finding consistency in their batting selection. Don’t like the idea of De Silva as a specialist spinner. Hope that changes. They have some decent quicks coming through.

Don’t see why people are so gloomy about their future. The Sri Lankan cricket board just need to stop being stupid.

They have plenty of talents. They just beat South Africa in South Africa (2-0) in a Test series! No other Asian team has ever beaten SA in SA before.

I expected SL to do poorly in WC but they beat England and West Indies. Things are definitely looking better.

Even in their worst period they still are a decent test team.

In LO they keep chopping and changing, but now they seem to have some consistency with selections so expect their results to be better.

Actually, U19 Nayeem is a better choice for ODI to replace Tamim. But, I think gradually Liton & Soumya will open for BD in LOs.

Can you tell me how come Sarkar (despite failures after failures) keeps on getting chances and Imrul Kayes doesn't?

Imrul's last 5 ODI innings - 144, 90, 115, 4, 0.

I would love to see some of the U-19 guys. We need to get young blood.

Old man still had it in him to finish on a high note. What a carreer. Good luck to him and his future endevours

Watched the highlights of the match. Great bowling by Malinga in his last ODI match. That toe-crushing yorker to remove Tamim was trademark Malinga. So happy for him that he did in his last ODI what he´s most known for. Good to see such a huge crowd, too. A good farewell match.

Bangladesh fined for slow over-rate in first ODI

Bangladesh have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate against Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Colombo on Friday.

Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine after Tamim Iqbal’s side was ruled to be two overs short of its target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

As such, Tamim has been fined 40 per cent of his match fee, while his players have received 20 per cent fines. Tamim pleaded guilty to the offence after the end of the match and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Raveendra Wilamasari, and third umpire Marais Erasmus leveled the charge.

How can playing for one's country bear no interest?

It happens whether one likes it or not. I am talking about the viewers . After watching the biggest show of cricket on earth, it is natural that they need time to regain interest in matches like these
