Hong Kong Sixes returns: 12 countries, 3 days of action-packed cricket in city

The Hong Kong International Sixes will return to the city later this year, with cricket bosses expecting 12 countries to take part over the course of three action-packed days.

Cricket Hong Kong (CHK) confirmed the competition’s return from November 1 to 3 at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground, ending a seven-year hiatus of the tournament.

Officials said the tournament signified a major push in the city’s cricket landscape, after the competition was sidelined by the coronavirus pandemic and a crammed international and domestic calendar.

The tournament will consist of 12 teams, played across three days, with six players in each squad.

“We are excited to bring back this iconic event that showcases our city as a truly world city and a sporting capital of East Asia to the world and our cricket credentials,” Burji Shroff, the CHK chairman, said.

Between 1992 and 2017, when it was last played, the Hong Kong Sixes ushered cricket legends like India’s Sachin Tendulkar, West Indies’s Brian Lara and Australia’s Shane Warne to compete in the sport’s fastest format.

In May, Shroff said the city needed “government support and one major sponsor” for the Hong Kong Sixes to return. It has been

“The strategic plan is to develop the Hong Kong Sixes into a global series, culminating every year with the grand finale at home,” Shroff said.

The chairman announced a collaboration with TCM Sports to inaugurate a new era for Hong Kong cricket and encourage locals to immerse themselves in the sport.

“To build the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes into a world class event and make this plan a reality, we have entered into a strategic partnership with TCM Sports,” Shroff said. “This collaboration underscores a commitment to ensuring the Sixes develops into a major event in the international cricket calendar.”

TCM Sports is a leading sports management and marketing company in India, having overseen the management of rights and sponsorships for the World Cup, Asia Cup and Indian Premier League.

“The Hong Kong Sixes is an iconic event that has regaled fans for decades with its sheer power and energy. For TCM, it is absolutely exciting to partner with Cricket Hong Kong, China and develop this unique and iconic event into a truly world class global event,” TCM Managing Director Mr. Lokesh Sharma said.

The Hong Kong Sixes legacy dates back to the 20th century, bearing witness to revered figures like MS Dhoni, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Malik and Glenn Maxwell who have all graced Hong Kong’s pitches and helped garner attention to the city’s sporting landscape.

Hong Kong Sixes makes a mockery of cricket. Extremely short boundaries.

Even my local club games used to have longer boundaries.

Thats great to hear its just a fun cricket festival, nothing serious but was fun to watch, I do hope they can increase the boundary sizes though

Man the best thing about this is Pakistan sends a proper international side while rest are trying out junior players :D

Hoping they send retired players, if they do so and Misbah is added, might think about going to the event.

Thats great to hear its just a fun cricket festival, nothing serious but was fun to watch, I do hope they can increase the boundary sizes though
That'll ruin the point of hitting Sixes.

They dont have to make it massive just increase it a little more im sure players will still be able to hit sixes
Naaa

The size is perfect.

Thing is, its a cricket festival where in one day you get to watch 10-15 games

As long as Hong Kong sixes isn't being used as a metric for selection, let players have fun.

I think personally its a little too small, having just a but of an increase would not do it damage

Dont be shocked if PCB select players based on Hong Kong sixes performence
PCB is stupid that's why.

Other sides sends juniors that will probs never even get to play international or at max will get their opportunity to shine in leagues and get noticed by selectors who will them consider their performances in domestic to determine if they get selected or not.

And some sides sens in retired players.

Pakistan sends in full strength 🤣🤣🤣.

Hong Kong Sixes is not a proper cricketing event. It is just for fun I think and I am happy to see it making a comeback. In the world of T20s and Hundreds, Hong Kong Sixes is still the most enjoyable game for me.

PCB should send in Umar Akmal again to hit mighty sixes.

Thats why the tournament becomes more fun.

Till this day, i cant move on from what Imran Nazir did. Biggest bottle job.

Hong Kong to host India vs Pakistan and Australia vs England at revived Cricket Sixes

The revived Hong Kong Cricket Sixes has been tipped to inspire youngsters and breathe new life into the sport in the city.

Returning next month following a seven-year absence, the Sixes will feature mouthwatering matchups between India and Pakistan, and Australia and England.

South Africa, the reigning champions, and New Zealand are involved, too, with those powerhouse cricketing nations drawn in a three-team group with Hong Kong.

Simon Willis, the Hong Kong head coach, said the major countries had provided “outstanding support” for the Sixes. “They understand their obligation to grow the game worldwide and this is a great tool to do that,” Willis said.

“The Sixes has great history and tradition. We hope it whets the appetite of people watching in Hong Kong, as well as in mainland China and around Asia. We want people to think, ‘That looks exciting, I wouldn’t mind giving it a go.’ It is all about growing the game.”

The Sixes is being staged at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground over three days from November 1.

Burji Shroff, the chairman of Cricket Hong Kong, China, said he expected a global television audience of 380 million, after the body struck a broadcasting arrangement with Star Sports.

The venue in Kowloon can hold around 3,100 people, raising the possibility of up to nearly 10,000 fans passing through the gates to watch a total of 29 matches over the competition.

Nizakat Khan, the Hong Kong captain, attended his first Sixes with his brother in 2004. He watched Najeeb Amar, who would coach him in primary school, shine for Hong Kong, along with his heroes from the Pakistan team, the swashbuckling batting pair of Imran Nazir and Shahid Afridi.

When the Sixes was last held in 2017, Nizakat was top scorer with 192, and player of the tournament.

“I was inspired by the Sixes as a kid … from going to it in 2004, it was my dream to play in it for Hong Kong,” Nizakat said.

“Because cricket is going to be in the Olympics [from 2028], more countries are taking it seriously. This is a big chance for youngsters to come to the ground, watch big teams and be inspired. It will be very good for the future of Hong Kong cricket.”

Nizakat acknowledged the Sixes was “coming at a critical time” for the Hong Kong team, squeezed between the T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Oman, and the 50-over World Cup Challenge League B in Uganda, where Willis’ team play their opening game on November 7.

Nizakat said the blink-and-you-miss-it format lent itself to underdogs upsetting the big guys. He was nevertheless looking forward to watching the box-office Pakistan versus India and England against Australia matches.

“Those are the biggest rivalries in cricket and the two biggest games,” Nizakat said. “I love watching them play and seeing how they execute their plans under pressure.”

The 12 nations are divided into four groups of three, with the top two in each advancing to the quarter-finals.

Shroff said he was “elated to bring the Hong Kong Sixes back to Hong Kong”.

“This has the potential to transform the cricketing landscape and shine a spotlight on cricket in regions like China, Japan and Korea,” Shroff added. “We are a sport gaining traction, especially after cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics.”

The tournament which has not been played since 2017 will see defending champions South Africa, and 11 other teams, participate in this six-a-side cricket showcase.

Leading the charge is Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ JJ Smuts, an all-rounder renowned for his aggressive batting style, who will be pivotal in navigating the team's tactics.

Complementing him is Northern Cape Heat’s Modiri Litheko, an emerging wicketkeeper-batsman known for his quick reflexes and adaptability in short format cricket.

DP World Lions Evan Jones joins the batting lineup, while Knights’ Jacques Snyman comes on board as a batting all-rounder.

Momentum Multiply Titans’ bowler Matthew Boast is set to challenge opponents, alongside Limpopo Impala’s pace bowler Don Radebe, whose all-round skills enhance the team's depth.

Rounding out the squad is Knights’ Aubrey Swanepoel, a first-class cricketer with experience in the Hong Kong Sixes.

The team is being coached by SA U19 and Emerging Academy Head Coach Malibongwe Maketa.

Together, this team combines leadership with talent, positioning them for a competitive edge on the international stage and places them in good stead to defend the title.

Hong Kong Cricket Sixes: India, Pakistan reveal seasoned squads for much-anticipated clash

Robin Uthappa, one of the architects of India’s epochal 2007 T20 World Cup success has been named captain of the country’s team for next month’s Hong Kong Cricket Sixes.

With 59 international appearances under his belt, he will lead a team in Hong Kong featuring fellow white-ball stalwart Kedar Yadhav and Stuart Binny, who has played six Test matches for India.

The Sixes, which have returned to the calendar after a seven-year absence, will be staged at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground from November 1 to 3.

India will be involved in one of the opening day’s most attractive fixtures when they clash with Pakistan in Pool C.

When the rivals drew a T20 World Cup group match 17 years ago, Uthappa struck a half-century, before hitting the stumps as India won a deciding bowl-out 3-0. The teams met again in a final whose repercussions are still being felt today.

India triumphed by five wickets and a format that had previously not won over the nation’s cricketing public exploded. Within seven months, the first season of the all-powerful Indian Premier League, which has given birth to franchise tournaments around the world, was under way.

On the issue of the ongoing proliferation of franchise leagues, Simon Willis, the Hong Kong head coach, said: “They have been great for players from the point of view of [increasing their] earning capacity, but they have obviously had a detrimental effect on international cricket, which is very sad.

“The world we live in now is about money and finance, and cricket is going down the lines of professional football, where the [English] Premier League is the equivalent of franchise cricket – players go to represent their countries when that fits in.”

Willis made the point that strong countries being occasionally weakened because of a squeezed calendar opened the door for associate nations, such as Hong Kong, to spring more surprises against the big boys.

The Sixes, which started in 1992, 16 years before the IPL began, are made for shock results, too, given the breezy five-over format and imaginative regulations that make it hard for one player to dictate a contest.

India, then, have chosen a string of wily campaigners to supplement Uthappa. Clean-striking batsman Yadhav scored two centuries and averaged 42.09 in 73 one-day internationals, while all-rounder Binny struck his highest Test score of 78 in a drawn match against England at Trent Bridge in 2014.

The seven-man India squad is stocked with experience rather than youth, boasting an average age of 38, but there is further top-level wisdom in the shapes of Manoj Tiwary and Shahbaz Nadeem, who claimed the wickets of the celebrated England quartet of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope on his most recent Test appearance in 2021.

Meanwhile, South Africa, the defending Sixes champions after claiming a record-equalling fifth title in 2017, have selected JJ Smuts to skipper them in Hong Kong.

Smuts, 36, has an international T20 strike rate of 105.45. In 2008, he was man-of-the-match when South Africa beat Pakistan in an under-19 World Cup semi-final.

The Proteas, who are in a group with New Zealand and Hong Kong, have also included Jacques Snyman, who played his only T20 international, against Pakistan in Lahore in 2021, in their travelling party.

Big guns Australia, England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka will all announce their squads over the coming weeks.

Last week, Pakistan were first out of the blocks with their seven-man list, which included 17-cap test batsman Faheem Ashraf, 30, who will captain the side, along with white-ball internationals Asif Ali, Danish Aziz, Hussain Talat and Aamer Yamin.

Hopefully Pakistan will make it 5 this time... they have a well balanced squad.

In sha Allah.

Anyway, Hong Kong Sixes has ridiculously short boundaries. Even gully cricket probably has longer boundaries.
Yep. Very short but that is why it has 6 players. You still have to connect to hit those sixes.

yeah that is what makes it super 6s that even a blind person can smash any bowler with such short boundaries

2010 Hong Kong Sixes final was a classic one (Pakistan vs Australia). Australia actually needed 36 runs from 6 balls in the final over and they ended up winning.

Ravi Bopara lights up Hong Kong Sixes 2024 with 6 sixes in one over, UAE clinch win against India by 1 run

Ravi Bopara hit 6 sixes in one over against Robin Uthappa and later scalped two wickets for his side.

The action shifted to Day 2 in the Hong Kong Sixes 2024 and it unveiled some more surprises. The proceedings began with the clash between Australia and Nepal followed by the match between India and UAE.

Nepal stunned Australia after the Asian side defeated them by 11 runs to finish at the top of the table. Batting first, Nepal scored 111/2 in 6 overs after captain Sundeep Jora notched up a fifty before retiring. In reply, Australia could only manage 100/5.

Jack Wood (55* off 16) was the top-scorer for them. Pratish GC was the pick of the bowlers for Nepal after he returned with a three-wicket haul.

The second fixture between India and UAE was a close encounter. The Men in Blue had already lost the first game to Pakistan on Day 1 and needed a win in this one to move into the quarter-finals.

Chasing 131, India needed 32 in the final over and all-rounder Stuart Binny tried his best to take the team over the line. Binny struck a four on the first ball, the second one was a wide and then followed it with four maximums on the trot bringing the equation down to three needed off one. But eventually he was run out on the final ball while trying for a second run. He scored 44 off 11.

Earlier, Robin Uthappa had also struck 43 off 10. UAE posted 130/5 in 6 overs, courtesy Khalid Shah's 42 off 10 and Zahoor Khan's 37* off 11.

Next, it was New Zealand up against Oman in the Bowl Match 1. Oman put up 103/3 in 6 overs riding on Vinayak Shukla's 53 off 14 before he retired. In reply, the Kiwis started off well as Raunaq Kapur scored a fifty before retiring but lost the plot in the middle and were restricted to 95/2 to lose the match by 8 runs.

India then locked horns with England in Bowl Match 2. Batting first, Ravi Bopara and Samit Patel took on the Indian bowlers. Bopara hit 6 sixes in one over against Robin Uthappa. He ended up giving away 37 runs in total in that over. Both the batters notched up individual half-centuries before retiring as England got to 120/1 in 6 overs.

Ravi Bopara then dominated India with his bowling as he scalped two wickets in one over which also included the dismissal of Robin Uthappa for a first-ball zero. India could only manage to score 105/3 and lost the game by 15 runs.

Australia were up against Hong Kong in the first quarter final. Batting first, the Aussies posted 129/3 in 6 overs as Dan Christian struck 53 off 15 before retiring while Alex Ross scored 45* off 12.

Later, Hong Kong skipper Nizakat Khan and wicket-keeper batter Zeeshan Ali hit individual fifties before retiring but the Australian side eventually restricted the hosts to 116/0 to win the match by 13 runs and marched into the semi-final.
